Why do we sing?

Many things we do in church services without really thinking much about why we do them. Singing for many of us is one of those things. We turn up to church and we sing songs near the start of the service and again at the end, but do we ever think about why? In this podcast, Pastor Neil Todman follows up on his Sunday morning sermon from the Life with Jesus series on baptism. He didn't have time to consider why people baptise infants and babies rather than older people on their own profession of faith. In the podcast he talks about the hypocrisy of having a Christening as an excuse for a party and also how it is possible to sincerely baptise a child yet have such an inaccurate theology of God or regeneration that the baptism isn't sufficient for coming into membership in our church. However in the final section he looks at those who are Bible-believing Christians who believe the same gospel of Jesus Christ that we do, yet put the sign of baptism before conversion rather than afterwards as we do.

He then looks at how these stories point us forward to Christ in his offices of prophet, priest and king. He finally shows how examples in 1 and 2 Samuel should give us a longing to be men and women after God's own heart.

He underlines how essential it is for us to preach Christ and Him crucified, and that we also need to call those around us to repentance and faith, including that first step after conversion of being baptised. This is really good medicine for all of our souls!

In a fairly chaotic fashion, Pastor Neil gives an overview of Acts. He begins by looking at the relationship between Luke and Acts and how we can know the authorship for both books was the same. He discusses whether calling it the Acts of the Apostles is helpful or not. He briefly shows how the book is structured around Acts chapter 1 verse 8: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" Finally he looks at ways Acts applies to Philip Street Chapel today. Actually part of the reason the overview is so chaotic is that he keeps stopping and apply Acts to the life of Philip Street Chapel in the second year of our revitalisation. The main hope is that this will help those reading Acts this month as we continue to Read the Bible Together at Philip Street Chapel.

This sermon ends with an appeal for a confident, childlike, faith that trusts the power and mercy of King Jesus.
