Embracing Our Roots, Forging Our Future: Marianist Gatherings in 2026

This year, 2026, is an abundant year for the Marianist Family. Across the United States and reaching as far as Bogotá, Colombia, the three branches of the Marianist Family in North America are gathering to pray, plan, and "forge the future." In this special preview episode, we hear from leaders from across the Family about the upcoming Marianist Family Congress, a Common Bond Reunion, the Society of Mary’s US Province Assembly, the Marianist Lay Community of North America’s Assembly, and the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities’ Assembly, which are set to envision the next years of Marianist life.

From Marianist Sister Laura Leming’s vision of a "meeting of the minds" to Matt Dunn’s insights into how the Vatican is looking to Marianists as a model for the modern Church, this episode captures the "burning heart" of a community in motion. We explore the deep history of the Society of Mary in Dayton, Ohio, with Fr. John Thompson, SM; the joyful "family reunion" atmosphere of the MLC-NA with Rob Brodrick; and the enduring bonds of former members of the SM with Jim Martin.

One Heart, One Mind: Relational Leadership Lessons from Adèle and Marie Thérèse with Sr. Laura Leming, FMI, and Jessica González Uhlig

While history often focuses on the “visionary spark” of Father Chaminade, the Marianist charism was equally forged in the practical, gritty leadership of two remarkable women: Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon and Marie Thérèse de Lamourous. "I'm Still Here": Matt Naveau’s Journey of Cancer and Companionship with Mother Adèle

"I'm still here, Matt."

Those four words, spoken during a moment of profound challenge, changed everything for Matt Naveau. In this episode of Sharing Our Marianist Stories, Matt shares his deeply personal journey of encountering Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon—not as a distant historical figure, but as a living companion through some of the most challenging years of his life.

At age 33, Matt was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, leaving him to navigate chemotherapy and the terrifying reality of his own mortality while raising two young children. What followed was a series of miraculous encounters and a growing sense of "accompaniment" that saw him through the diagnosis, a year of pandemic isolation, and eventually, a call to new leadership.

Openness to the Spirit: Bro. Esteban Reyes, SM on Being a Marianist Missionary

In this episode of Sharing Our Marianist Stories, Bro. Esteban Reyes, SM, shares his inspiring journey as a Marianist Brother--from Mexico to serving in the United States--and details the profound role Our Lady of Guadalupe and a miraculous sign during prayer played in confirming his vocation. After serving in administrative roles in Mexico, he transitioned to missionary work in the US, which led him to his current ministry at the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, New Jersey. Driven by his strong commitment to the Marianist charism and his role as a missionary, Bro. Esteban pioneered the formation of the first Spanish-speaking Marianist Lay Community in the U.S. He also discusses how his openness to the Holy Spirit has led to a surprising new gift: writing music, some of which is featured in this episode.

The Voice of Others: Sr. Gretchen Trautman, FMI

Over 75 years ago, in October 1949, three Marianist Sisters arrived in Somerset, Texas to establish the first foundation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Marianist Sisters) in the United States. Roughly 21 years after that foundation, Sr. Gretchen Trautman, FMI professed first vows with the Daughters of Mary Immaculate. In this episode of Sharing Our Marianist Stories, Sr. Gretchen describes her first encounters with the Marianist Family and Charism, the influence of God’s voice in her vocational journey, and how her leadership experiences influenced her vision for sharing the Marianist Charism.

A Lawyer’s Path to First Vows: Memo Pena Contreras, nSM

After spending time in aspirancy and the last two years at the Novitiate in Dayton, OH, Guillermo Pena Contreras, nSM, (more commonly known as Memo) will profess first vows with the Society of Mary on June 8, 2024.

In this episode Memo shares what attracted him to vowed religious life, how his experiences of aspirancy and novitiate shaped him, how his background in family law impacted his vocation and his experience of coming to the US from Mexico.

After spending time in aspirancy and the last two years at the Novitiate in Dayton, OH, Chicago Joe Schuller, nSM, Memo Pena Contreras, nSM, and Joseph Choi, nSM will each profess their first vows with the Society of Mary this summer (2024). We’ve sat down with each of them to learn more about their discernment to become a Marianist Brother and what their formation process has entailed. Chicago Joe Schuller, nSM will be the first of the three to profess his first vows.

In this episode, Chicago shares about what attracted him to vowed religious life, how his experiences of aspirancy and novitiate shaped him, and the role intentional community has in his call to be a brother.

An Irish Perspective: Susan Buckley

Susan Buckley is a Lay Marianist living in Dublin, Ireland where the Marianist Family has had a presence since 1967. She stopped by NACMS while visiting Dayton in September 2023 and sat down with us for an interview. In this episode, Susan shares about her engagement in a virtual Lay Marianist Community with others in the United States and her experience at the 2023 International Lay Marianist Assembly in Madrid. She also sheds light on what it is like to be a Lay Marianist in Ireland amid the current context of the Catholic Church there.

The Vow of Stability: Al Prendergast and Sr. Laura Leming, FMI

Al Prendergast has been a Lay Marianist since he took the vow of stability in 1970. Sr. Laura Leming, FMI made first vows as a Marianist Sister in 1978 and, later, also took the vow of stability. They each participated in MSP 2.0 in 2019-2020 which focused on the topic of “Marianist Stability: Rooted Presence.” In this episode, Al and Sr. Laura share their historical and sociological research on the vow of stability and reflect on what this vow has meant in their lives. Their stories can significantly influence our understanding of how the Marianist Charism empowers us to remain committed to birthing Christ in our world today by sharing the Marianist Charism with others and standing firm amid life’s challenges.

Al, who passed in the summer of 2024, became Lay Marianist when he took the vow of stability in 1970. Sr. Laura made first vows as a Marianist Sister in 1978 and, later, also took the vow of stability. They each participated in MSP 2.0 in 2019-2020 which focused on the topic of “Marianist Stability: Rooted Presence.” Read Al’s research paper entitled “Marianist Vow of Stability and the Marianist State” under e-publications on our website.

Meghann Naveau and Nancy Woeste are Lay Marianists serving on the Dayton Marianist Family Council and have been part of the Queen of Apostles Community (or QAC) which transitioned from a non-territorial Marianist parish to a Lay Community on January 1, 2024. They share about their experiences of serving on the temporalities committee of the Dayton Marianist Family Council and how that engagement positioned them to help the Marianist Family respond to needs within the City of Dayton. They also share about the impact the Marianist Family has had on their lives and some upcoming steps for the Dayton Marianist Family to enhance their engagement in solidarity initiatives in the Dayton area. Sr. Nicole Trahan, FMI professed first vows of June of 2008 and serves as the Vocation Director for the Daughters of Mary Immaculate amongst many other professional roles. In this episode of Sharing Our Marianist Stories, Sr. Nicole shares about her experience in Nairobi, Kenya as a participant in the Nazareth Program, a formation program for emerging formators within the Marianist Family. After giving a brief framework of the program itself, Sr. Nicole describes the dynamic of community that developed amongst the program’s participants, how that sense of community was impacted by the diversity within the group, and how this experience fuels her ministry and her hopes for the Marianist Family.

Ann Mueller has been connected to the Marianist Family since 1988 when she began working for the Society of Mary’s Province of St. Louis. In this episode of Sharing Our Marianist Stories, Ann gives an insider’s view of what it’s like to work for the Society of Mary. She shares how her work with the Society of Mary impacted her spiritual life and reflects on the experience of working for the Marianists before and after the merger of provinces in 2002, which resulted in the inauguration of the Society of Mary’s US Province.

Courage in the Face of Fear: Reading Marie Therese's Self Offering

In this episode, Patti and Sr. Gabby discuss one of the few writings we have by Marie Therese: an act of self-offering she wrote to God in 1797, signed in her own blood. This document details how Marie Therese offered herself as a "victim in expiation of the crimes of the Revolution." We talk about what this self-offering meant, what the crimes of the Revolution were, and how, despite Marie Therese's courage and (seeming) fearlessness, she actually struggled a great deal with anxiety and self-doubt.

"Does Your Cow Give Milk?" A Deep Dive into One of Adele's Letters

In an episode that is a bit of a departure from the usual format, Patti and Sr. Gabby discuss one of Blessed Adele's letters, which was written to a Marianist sister who was the director of one of the community's houses in 1825. This letter is a great window into the final years of Adele's life and the strength of her leadership. Patti and Sr. Gabby discuss the challenges the Marianist Sisters faced at this time, the tensions that existed between the Sisters and Father Chaminade, and the humor that is part of daily life in community. It's an interesting conversation that is sure to be informative whether you know a little or a lot about Adele!

Beatification Memories: Interviews Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of Chaminade's Beatification

On September 3rd, 2000, Father Chaminade was Beatified along with five other holy people during a Mass in St. Peter's Square. Pope St. John Paul II was the presider, and he noted that Blessed Chaminade was an "apostle of the laity." In this podcast, we interviewed six different people who were at the Beatification and the events surrounding it. Each of them provides their own perspective on that experience, as well as the legacy of Chaminade officially being named "Blessed."

Commitment to Community: Ann Hirt and Carol Ramey

Lay Marianists Carol Ramey and Ann Hirt originally met as undergraduate students at the University of Dayton in the 1960s, where they both became involved in the UD Sodality. After graduating, both of them joined the Marianist Visitation State Community, where they have been members for over 50 years. In this podcast, they reflect on how their friendship, their Marianist commitment, and relationship with Mary has sustained them for the past 50 years. Carol Ramey was also the previous director of NACMS, where she served the Marianist Family for many years before her retirement in 2016.

Once a Missionary, Always a Missionary: Sister Columba Yu, FMI

Sister Columba is a Marianist Sister from South Korea who has spent the last 13 years of her life as a missionary in India. She was among the original 4 Marianist Sisters who went to India in 2006 to begin a community of Marianist Sisters there. The Sisters live in Ranchi in the northern part of India where they do a variety of ministries including healthcare work and job training for women. Sr. Gabby interviewed Sr. Columba in December while she was visiting the United States. In this podcast, Sr. Columba shares her story of being a missionary, becoming a Marianist Sister, and what her reaction was when she was first asked by the Sisters to go to India 13 years ago.

Marianist Brother Tom Redmond is a staff member at NACMS. He has been working for the past several years to adapt the Spirit of Saragossa Retreat--which has traditionally been a 30 day retreat centered on Marianist spirituality, Mary, and the Founders--into a retreat that people can do in their daily life. A major component of the retreat is meeting with a spiritual director. In this podcast, Patti Gehred talks to Bro. Tom about spiritual direction. What is it? Why is it important? How is it different from counseling or confession? Throughout the course of the interview, Bro. Tom shares insights into how we can respond to God's invitation to growth and deeper relationship.

The Gift of Relationship: Father Norbert Burns, S.M.

Father Norbert Burns, S.M. is a 95 year old Marianist priest who just celebrated his 75th anniversary of first vows. Father Norb is well known for his teaching and work on the vocation of marriage. He is especially well known for teaching classes on Christian Marriage for several decades at the University of Dayton. His last class that he taught, in 2007, had 125 students in just one class. In this podcast, Fr. Norb talks about his life, reflects on his vocation, and talks about the greatest gift of his life: relationships.

Brother and Sister in the Marianist Family: Fr. Dave Fleming, SM and Marceta Reilly

Marceta Reilly and Father Dave Fleming, S.M. are very active members of the Marianist Family. They are also siblings. Fr. Dave left home to join the Society of Mary when Marceta was eight years old, and although Marceta came to know the Marianists through her older brother, she made the charism her own by forming lay communities in the rural Kansas town where she lives. She has also been an active member of Our Lady of the Round Table, which is an international online lay Marianist community. In this podcast, they interview each other about some of their experiences in the Marianist Family and their insights into the charism.

Following Mary's Yes in the Inner City: Mike and Beth Schulz's Story

Lay Marianists Mike and Beth Schulz share their story about graduating from the University of Dayton and founding the Nassau Lay Marianist Community on the urban East side of Dayton. The Nassau Community was inspired by the Marianist charism and the Catholic Worker Movement as a living community that would build relationships with the urban poor. This community would eventually start Mission of Mary Cooperative, which is a non-profit urban farm in East Dayton that also provides fresh food to low-income families. According to Mike and Beth, this entire project drew its inspiration from Mary's "Yes."
