Episode 9: S03E09 - FA Women's National League North vs South All Star Match

While some publications like to share their team of the season, we thought we’d do something a bit different. Inspired by the East and West conference NBA All-Star Match, I thought that we’d do something similar but compile an FA Women’s National League North and South All-Star team.

As someone based on the south coast, I haven’t been able to watch as much football from the northern half of the country as I would have liked and becoming a father for the first time and suffering the pandemic have made that even more difficult. While I know my stuff about teams in the South, I have enlisted Nick Andrews-Gauvain of the Wolves Women Podcast and Chris Gadsby the host of Women’s Football Chat to help out and take care of the Team North.

The only stipulation in collating our line ups is that we can only include a maximum of two players per club. This is partly to keep it interesting and to prevent Nick from just selecting eleven Wolves players!

Episode 4: S04E04 - Author, Lou Kuenzler

Something a little bit different in this week’s podcast episode. This one has nothing to do with any current team but as a fan of books and the history of women’s football it was great being able to speak with Lou Kuenzler, the author of ‘Our Beautiful Game.’

The book tells the story of Polly Nabb, a young girl desperate to play football while her brother goes off to fight in the trenches of the First World War. It is inspired by amazing young footballers like Lily Parr and Alice Woods who changed attitudes to girls and women on the pitch and showed extraordinary courage on the home front too.

We actually recorded this in the midst of the summer’s heatwave and while England were marching on in the European Championships. Lou was an absolute pleasure to speak to, her passion for this story is easy see and while her characters are fictional there are many similarities between Polly’s story and the experiences of the trailblazers like Lily Parr and Alice Woods.

Lou doesn’t hold back and is incredibly honest about her dyslexia. Something which you might imagine would hold her back in her writing, but far from it!

We are weeks away from the beginning of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, twelve months after it was originally scheduled. This will be the second time that Team GB will be fielding a women’s football team. To mark the occasion, Daisy and I were fortunate enough to spend some time with Ifoema Dieke (@IfeDk).

Dieke was one of only two non-England players within the Great Britain women’s football team that competed in the London 2012 Olympics. She tells us about the selection process, the tournament itself and offers advice to the Toyko 2020 squad.

After a short break from recording, we’re back and while there is no football being played we wanted to look at other aspects of the women’s game. I’m really pleased to bring you my conversation with Ajani from 3 Lance Media.

Ajani has recently produced a five-episode series titled 'Throw In The Kitchen Sink' available via YouTube. Each episode focuses on important issues affecting the women’s game – Sexism and Sexuality, Broadcasting Issues, Black Representation, Agency and Professionalism and Equal Pay.

If you’ve not watched them yet then I fully encourage you to do so. I have linked the first episode below and from there you should be able to find the rest from yourself. Although you don’t need to have seen the series period to listening to the episode, it works well as an intro or an Attenborough style ‘Making Of’ to compliment it.

Episode 8: S03E08 - Bloomsbury Girls Football

In the latest episode of our podcast series, I get to sit down and catch up with Bloomsbury Football‘s Maria Hasler, Emma Thackwray and Marcus Carter. Bloomsbury Football is a registered charity delivering the best football experience to children in central London, as a charity they offer all parents financial assistance to ensure that all children can access quality football coaching.

Their core programmes consist of Bears Football which is an introduction to Football for kids of the age 1.5-6 years old. They are a school sports supplier for year 1 to 6. As well as running mixed ability and development teams for the ages 6 to 14 years old. For those looking to push to a higher level, they run an Academy Professional Football Experience for talented young players. As stated, our main interest is the launch of their most recent programme focusing on female participation in the sport.

The trio are all involved in the girl’s programme and all have a strong background in coaching or within the girls and women’s game.

Episode 7: S03E07 - W League Season Review With Impetus Women's Football

In the most recent episode of our podcast series, Stuart Barker catches up with regular contributor, Ben Gilby. Ben is the founder of Impetus Women's football, a website that is becoming really popular with Australian followers due to its fantastic coverage of the W League. We were also joined two of his Australia based contributors, Kris Goman and Kieran Yap.

Kris and Keiran are Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory fans respectively, so both are perfectly placed to talk about the recent W League Grand Final which saw Melbourne secure the trophy thanks to a goal from 19-year-old Kyra Cooney-Cross in injury-time of extra time.

Many of you are probably like me and don't know too much about the W League and in this episode, we also talk about the format of the W League including how short the season is and how the league has been coping with strict state-based lockdowns.

In this episode, Harriet discusses being in the difficult position of signing for Wroxham, her first senior club, just days before the December lockdown meaning she still hasn't met all of her new teammates yet as well as highlighting just how welcoming and progressive the club is. Darrell, a very well known name around the Norfolk women's football scene, talks about his role at the club, how he has been building the club's profile despite lockdown and the club's aims for the short to medium-term future.
