I am in the very English town of Stratford-Upon-Avon, globally famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It's also my home town and I try to visit each May to enjoy warm, sun-drenched evenings with friends. I like to walk through the town and down to the beautiful River Avon and watch the elegant swans gliding under the willow trees in the late sunlight. Noisy meditation in Africa

I am at the very edge of the precipitous – and very loud – Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. It is the world's largest sheet of falling water and known in the local language as Mosi oa Tunya, or the 'smoke that thunders'. So you might think it an odd location for a meditation session but there's method in my madness.

The great Costa Rica turtle race

I am on a long Pacific Ocean beach in Costa Rica watching a truly monumental natural phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of Olive Ridley turtles are hauling themselves out of the waves under a bright moon and dragging their bodies up the beach to lay their precious eggs. This rarely seen biological phenomenon is known as an arribada and I am lucky enough to witness one.

Pastoral beauty in an English village

I am enjoying a perfect late spring evening in an English village. The sun is setting over the wheat fields, rabbits play in a meadow, the hedgerows are bursting with life and there are swifts and swallows on the wing. In the distance I can hear the mournful bleating of lambs and an owl begin to hoot in the woods. These are just some of the numerous natural wonders of an English village in May.

Tokyo tranquillity in an urban park

I found peace and calm in a natural oasis in the middle of Tokyo and it was totally unexpected. I went for a walk looking for a spot to sit on the waterfront of Tokyo Bay and watch the seabirds. Instead, I found the Hama-rikyu Gardens, which date back to the 1600s. The gardens are full of graceful cedars and include groves of plum and cherry trees, a bank of peonies and a wisteria trellis. There are also small teahouses which appear to float magically on the lake.

Maori stargazing in New Zealand

I travelled to New Zealand’s South Island at Maori New Year to witness a dark-sky spectacle in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. These reserves are being established across the globe, which is good for astronomers but – more importantly – for animals and birds, as more and more human-created light is disrupting and threatening their migrations and survival.

I learned about Maori astronomy and looked for star patterns the local Maori people know and love such as ‘wakas’ or star canoes ploughing across the celestial ocean, reminiscent of the crafts their forebears used to traverse the vast expanses of the South Pacific and find New Zealand. It was mesmerising. Meeting Iceland's petrified trolls

I travelled to the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland on a cyclonic day to meet petrified trolls. After braving truly atrocious weather and perilous 'sneaker waves' on Djúpalónssandur beach I made it to Dritvík beach to see the ghostly stone trolls. Then, just for a few seconds, the weather cleared and I had a beatific nature experience. I spent a blissfully peaceful day in Kyoto just after New Year strolling along the Philosopher's Path. I wrapped up warm, sat on benches and let nature relax me. I watched the slow movement of the canal water and listened to the song of a distant bird. If ever there was an idyllic spot for mindfulness, the Philosopher's Path in winter must surely be it. Time travelling in the Australian Outback

I spent a fascinating day with a local Aboriginal man in a secret part of the stunning Flinders Ranges in South Australia. He opened my eyes to the wonders of ancient rock art – 27,000-year-old messages and stories that his ancestors etched on sandstone boulders. This is a secret site and not on the main tourist trail, which made it all the more special. He also taught me how his ancestors lived off the land, using native plants for everything from making rope to curing stomach ache.

Autumn in a peaceful Manhattan park

I travelled to see some of the best glow worm caves in New Zealand. This is a must-do activity when you are in the Land of the Long White Cloud, as long as you're not claustrophobic. You walk into the cave with a tractor inner tube which you use to float down a mysterious, underground river. It's pitch black down there but when you float into the glow worm caverns you see the roofs absolutely covered with them. I have never experienced anything like it; it was a truly breathtaking experience. If you're wondering 'where can I see glow worms in New Zealand' this might be the place.

Communing with the long-dead in Denmark

I travelled to Silkeborg in Denmark to get a glimpse into the past and see the best-preserved human on the planet: Tollund Man. His body is about 2,400 years old and was found in a peat bog in 1950. He is so incredibly well preserved you can see many features we would recognise in a living human. Tollund Man is one of the most amazing cultural things to see and do in Denmark and it is well worth a visit to the museum to say 'hello'. Just be prepared as it can be an exhilarating experience seeing him lying there just on the other side of the glass.

Natural bliss on a Scottish beach

I travelled to the captivating Huishinish – or Huisinis – beach on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland to follow my roots and find solace in nature. I spent most of a day alone on this perfect, white-sand beach, which looked more like one in the Caribbean than the wild Western Isles of Scotland.

If you're wondering 'where is the most beautiful beach in Scotland', this might be the place. A good number of Scotland's best beaches are on these magical, windswept islands. I walked across the grassy 'machair' dunes and along the stunning stretch of sand under sunny skies. Just when I thought this place couldn't get any better, a seal popped its head up in the bay.

Deep in Borneo's magical rainforest

I travelled to Borneo to join Dayak tribesmen heading deep into the jungle to search for an area in which to relocate orangutans displaced by indiscriminate logging operations. The tribesmen work with international charities to help conserve these wonderful apes here. I flew in by helicopter from the coastal town of Balikpapan and then took longboats way up river to find a suitable patch of untamed rainforest. These are some of the last undisturbed rainforests in Asia – in the world – and home to countless flora and fauna species. They offer the perfect environment for the displaced orangutans.

Quiet and calm on a frozen lake in Finland

I travelled to Finland for some Finnish winter fun: experiencing the snowy beauty of its forests and walking across a frozen lake. Crunching over the icy surface during the brief hours of daylight is one of the best things to do in Finland in winter. You can usually walk on lake ice in Finland from November to March but check with the locals first to make sure it's safe. Finland's lakes in winter are ideal for cross-country skiing too and zooming across on a snowmobile, so include those activities on your Finland winter itinerary: what to do and where to go. And at the end of a serene winter day warm up in a traditional wood-fired Finnish sauna at a cabin in the woods.
