Data Science Analytics in Football with Expert Hadi Sotudeh

Hadi Sotudeh joined us on our Spurs95:01 Podcast – where we spoke about data analytics and Football.

Hadi is currently is an ETH Zürich doctoral student working on “Spatio-temporal Network Analysis of Team Tactical Formation.

Characteristics in Association Football (Soccer)” and is also the head teaching assistant for the “soccer analytics” course.

Before that, Hadi worked for the Performance & Technology department of the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) as a “football data science” consultant.

West Ham 1-0 Tottenham - Tottenham Fan Reaction

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new video from Spurs95:01. Today it is West Ham 1-0 Tottenham l Michail Antonio Celebration l Tottenham Fan Reaction.

During a raucous start, West Ham came within a whisker of seizing the lead. Aaron Cresswell swung in a fantastic corner that whizzed off a head at the front and nearly fell for Tomas Soucek, the dependable set-piece scorer.

Soon after, Hugo Lloris was called into action for the first time. Jarrod Bowen delivered a beautiful cross 12 yards out to an unmarked Pablo Fornals. With a well-timed scissor kick, the Spaniard met it in mid-air and blasted the ball towards the bottom corner, only for Lloris to dive to his right and make the save.

West Ham's best attacking moves featured Fornals. He started their next by passing the ball to Benrahma, who slid a pass to Antonio, who eluded Cristian Romero with ease. The striker returned the ball to Fornals on the edge of the area, but his volley went wide wide.

Tottenham responded. Kane delivered a superbly weighted ball from the centre circle to Son Heung-min's foot on the edge of the box. Son cut his way out of being surrounded by three West Ham players and slipped the pass to Lucas Moura, who turned and curled a shot past the post. Kane, who has had a similarly bleak start to the season, had a good chance to score before halftime. Sergio Reguilón floated a high, looping cross to the back post, where he leapt above Cresswell and thudded a thunderous header that would have crept under the bar had Lukasz Fabianski not perfectly timed his leap to tip the ball over.

However, West Ham posed the bigger danger, particularly in the second half, and every time they attacked, it felt like they were only one more pass away from getting through, a feeling reinforced when Fornals' pass was intercepted by Reguilón with an unmarked Bowen lurking in the box. Reguilón sailed confidently away from his own box — perhaps too confidently. Fornals was able to pull the ball back after a sloppy touch and drive forward before unleashing a shot that was loopily deflected over the bar.

West Ham scored from the corner. Cresswell fired an outswinging delivery to the front post, where Skipp was stationed, but he didn't get off the ground due to Soucek's pressure. Antonio received the ball, and his marker, Kane, was taken off guard. The striker had hardly enough time to watch the ball's trajectory before reacting immediately and poking the ball past Lloris with his leg. Kane was visibly distressed by the price he had paid for his inattention to Antonio. The Antonio celebration was great to see for West Hams but torture for Spurs fans.

As a first for our Spurs95:01 channel podcasts, today we present a podcast that is NOT Spurs related.

Our channel is expanding to include content from other teams in the Premier Lague, we think this information will be interesting and informative to our subscribers and listeners as all teams are part of the Premier League family!

One of the biggest stories of the 2021 season in the English Premier League has been the Manchester United News that Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Manchester United. For weeks before the transfer of Ronaldo to Man Utd, rumours were rife that he was actually going to sign for Man City, and many Man Utd fans were resigned to this.

Juventus had told Cristiano Ronaldo that due to their financial situation they would be unable to pay his heavy wages for the upcoming 12 months, and so he needed to find a new club, and the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer to Man Utd was put in-train. During the whole transfer window united fans had been wondering about the Manchester United transfer news for 2021 and who they would sign.

In this podcast, we speak to Ram, an avid Man Utd fan from Malaysia, to get his views on some of the burning topics around the Cristiano Ronaldo News and his and his return to Man Utd.

Ram is an avid follower of Cristiano Ronaldo news, so the first thing we asked him about was his reaction when he heard that Ronaldo returns to Man Utd, what were his feelings, was he excited about the Ronaldo news, how did he feel about Cristinao Ronaldo at Manchester United?

The next topic we spoke to Ram about was the Manchester United Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. How he has managed Ronaldo in the team, how did he feel about Cristiano at United, and what part did he play in the Cristiano Ronaldo Welcome to Manchester United.

With Ram we then went on to the question of if Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United causes a problem for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Ronaldo is bigger personality than him. After the Ronaldo goal vs Villareal, we asked how he could be dropped for the next game against Everton the English Premier League.

We then discussed some other topics with Ram such as what United can realistically hope to achieve this season and what the fans should expect. Ram was very forthright in his view that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be sacked if he cannot achieve success with the quality of player he has at his disposal; he also suggested some alternative managers, watch the video to see who Ram suggests, you will be surprised!

Other topics discussed included the future of Danny Van Der Beek, the best formation for Manchester United to play, the future of Nemanja Matic and also a little bit about Ram’s channel called the Plot Malaysia.

As Chelsea were losing to Villa, all Leicester needed to do was to beat Spurs, and it was going well when they were leading 2-1 after two penalties from Jamie Vardy. But then Kasper Schmeichel inadvertently punched into his own net to give Spurs an equaliser.

After that Leicester were chasing the game and they gave enough room for Gareth Bale to score two goals and gives Spurs a 4-2 and make sure their arch enemies Chelsea qualified in 4th spot for the CL.

In the interim Kanes scored his 23rd goal to win the golden boot again, only time will tell if this is his last game for Spurs!

The season has ended now, and let’s hope next season brings more success!

Goals from Harry Kane and a rare strike by Hojbjerg gave us a comfortable 2-0 home win against Wolves and kept us in 6th place chasing a Europa League spot!

We hot the post three times and could have scored more, but in the end the two strikes were enough to give us our first home win against Wolves since 2010.

Dele turned in another great performance and he is slowly getting back to his best; as usual Kane and Bale played, well and the defence also handled Wolves well enough to keep a clean sheet!

Next game is at home wo t Villa on Wednesday when 10,500 fans will be in the stadium willing us to victory, COYS!!

Any faint hopes we had of reaching top 4 were finally extinguished as we were put to the sword by a better and hungrier Leeds team. This Leeds Tottenham Hotspur match had more meaning for Tottenham Hotspur as they need a win to keep their top 4 hopes alive, but as in previous matches, Spurs bottled it and played appallingly letting Leeds dictate the play and win comfortably.

Normally Tottenham Hotspur vs Leeds United matches are entertaining affairs and this was no different; Leeds attacked constantly and if it wasn’t for Hugo Lloris Spurs’ keeper, they could have conceded 5 or 6 goals.

We all expected the Leeds vs Spurs match to be a good game, but the torrential rain made for more mistakes and even more goalmouth incidents!

With Top 4 gone our only goal is to make sure Arsenal don’t finish ahead of us, next up it’s Wolves at home on the 16th May…COYS!!

Tottenham played bottom of the table and already relegated Sheff Utd today and thanks to a glorious hattrick by Gareth Bale and a superb strike by Son, ran out 4-0 winners to move to 5th in the table on 56 points. Just 5 points behind Chelsea in 4th with 4 games to goTop4 although still unlikely is now possible!!

After a glorious ball from Aurier, Bale toe-poked the ball past the Sheff Utd goalie to give us the lead; in the second half Son laid off a great ball for him to fire a superb shot in the top right-hand corner to make it 2-0. Another Aurier assist and Bale fired in a third, and Son added a fourth to make it a great day for Spurs. It could have been more if Son’s first goal hadn’t been ruled out by VAR.

If the team above slip, Spurs are wating to pounce for that Top4 spot, next its Leeds away on Saturday!

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01. Today it is Spurs 2-1 Southampton l Tottenham vs Southampton Reaction l Mason Starts with a Win!

Listen to our podcast of Tottenham vs Southampton match reaction as Spurs beat their rivals 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This was the first game after Mourinho got sacked and the first in-charge for Ryan Mason, the 29-year-old interim manager for Tottenham Hotspur.

In terms of the team, Mason recalled Bale with the rest of the team the same as who played the last game at Everton.

Southampton, smarting from their FA cup semi-final defeat were the better side and Lloris made two amazing saves in the first few minutes to deny Southampton a goal from a corner. It wasn’t to last as Danny Ings beat Aurier to another corner and angled a superb header past Lloris to put Southampton 1-up.

Spurs were poor in the 1st half and didn’t have a single shot on target.

Things improved in the second half and a delightful goal by Bale brought Tottenham level again at 1-1. We thought we had taken the lead when Son scored from a Reguillon pass, but it was disallowed for offside against Moura who was blocking the view of the Southampton goalie.

But Djenepo fouled Reguillon on the edge of the box and after a VAR review a penalty was awarded – Son stepped up and scored beautifully!!

So, the Ryan Mason era started with a much-needed win, and Top 4 is still on for Spurs…now on to the Carabao Cup final with the small matter of Man City waiting!

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01. Today it is Everton 2-2 Spurs l Instant Match Reaction l Kane Saves Spurs Again!

Listen to our Everton vs Tottenham podcast of the match reaction as they draw 2-2 at Goodison. In a match they had to win to keep alive their top 4 chances, Tottenham Hotspur were only able to scrape a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Watch this video for Everton vs Spurs reaction from three Tottenham Hotspur fans.

A mistake by Michael Keane as he missed an Ndombele cross allowed Kane to fire Tottenham in-front; but Everton hit back after Reguillon brought down James for a penalty that Sigurdsson slotted away neatly.

In the second half Coleman came on for Iwobi and put across a lovely cross that Sigurdsson swept into the net for a beautiful goal.

However, the goals were not finished as Keane made another mistake and headed a Lamela cross against Mason Holgate and the ball fell to Kane who majestically swept it past Pickford for the equaliser.

Spurs 1-3 Man Utd l Spurs vs Man Utd Analysis l Shambolic Performance and Surrender!!

After wins for Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham, it was imperative for Tottenham Hotspur to win against Manchester United; but as we predicted, Spurs failed miserably and after taking a 1-0 lead, crumbled again to lose the match1-3 letting in 3 second half goals!

United thought they took the lead when Cavani slipped in a neat pass from Pogba, but it was disallowed for a foul by McTominay on Son in the build-up.

Spurs took the lead through a goal by Son, a neat finish after a pass by Harry Kane. But after the break, and following the usual Mourinho MO, rather than take the game to United, we sat back and couldn’t defend the lead. With the game at 1-1, rather than bring an attacking player like Bale on Mourinho brought on Sissoko, a defensive midfielder. This is typical of his negative mindset.

So Top 4 is now officially dead, and all we can hope for is a win the Carabao Cup and a place in the Europa League, but I fear that won’t be enough to keep our best players such as Kane, Son at the club; years of mid-table mediocrity is what we have to look forward to.

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01. Today it is Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur l Instant Match Reaction l 15 Points Dropped from Winning Positions!

After Chelsea lost at home to WBA the day before, Tottenham Hotspur had the chance to move into the last Champions League place with a win at relegation-threatened Newcastle at St. James Park. But true to form, Spurs weren’t able to defend a lead and after leading 2-1 conceded an 85th minute equaliser to of all people Joe Willock, on-loan to Newcastle from Arsenal!

Spurs started slowly again and Newcastle took the lead through Joelinton, a striker who seems to reserve his goals for Spurs – 2 of his totals of 4 have come against the Lilywhites!

Having conceded the opening goal, we stormed back with a couple of goals from who else Harry Kane, but the inability to defend a lead which has plagued us all season resulted us in conceding the equaliser and dropping another 2 points. This brings to 15 the number of points we have dropped kin the league from winning positions.

Once again, other than Kane there were few good performances; Joe Rodon played well as did PEH and Reguillon (going forward, defending was a bit shaky!).

Davinson Sanchez was again very poor in defence and his mistake led to the first Newcastle goal.

Next up is Man Utd at home…top 4 has never looked further away!!

Aston Villa 0-2 Spurs l Instant Match Reaction l Moura Shines Again for Spurs!

After two disgraceful performances it was important for Tottenham Hotspur to bounce back and salvage some pride and also keep up faint hopes of finishing 4th in the Premier League.

In a dull and boring game with few chances, Vinicius scored his first league goal for Tottenham Hotspur in the first half after a great run and pass by Moura.

In the second half, a rash tackle by Matty Cash on Harry Kane resulted in Mike Dean awarding Spurs a penalty which Harry Kane duly despatched to make it 2-0.

Not a great game or a great performance by Spurs, but a win was vital to keep up faint hopes of the top 4; after the 2-week international break we resume our league campaign away to relegation threatened Newcastle.

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01. Today it is time for Spurs – Dinamo Zagreb Europa League Instant Match Reaction.

A really good performance from Spurs saw us beat the top team in Croatia Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 and take a lead into the second leg in Croatia next week.

Two goals from Harry Kane (who else) saw us get the better of our opponents and maintain the amazing statistic that a Croatian team has NEVER won in England in a European game!

The first goal came in the first half after a great dribbling run by Erik Lamela whose shot hit the post, but Kane was there to smash the rebound home. The second goal came in the second half after a mistake by a Dinamo defender, saw Harry shoot past the goalie to make it 2-0.

We had chances to make it three but couldn’t put them away, but the key is that we kept a clean sheet so no away goal for Dinamo. So we only need to score 1 goal in Zagreb and Dinamo will need to score 4 to win, so we have a great advantage.

Dinamo didn’t have many chances and Petkovic their much vaunted striker had a very quiet game!

Spurs 4-1 Crystal Palace English Premier League Instant Match Reaction

Another amazing performance by Spurs saw us notch up our third straight win on the bounce as we hammered Crystal Palace 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Top 4 is now definitely on!

A brace from Gareth Bale and Harry Kane (one a worldie) saw us beat Palace and move into 6th place in the table. It was the Bale and Kane show as both players scored two goals each.

Bale gave us the lead via an assist by Kane, but we were pegged back just before half time as Palace equalised thru Benteke’s precision header beating Lloris. But in the second half we scored another three goals and blew Palace apart, giving us lots of confidence going into the Europa League match and the NLD next week. Two assists for Kane plus two goals and one assist for Son makes this a great result for Spurs!

Fulham 0-1 Spurs l Instant Match Reaction l Dele is Back

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01. Today it is time for Fulham - Spurs Instant Match Reaction.

Another positive result, the second on the bounce as Tottenham Hotspur ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win at relegation threatened Fulham at Craven Cottage. An own goal by Fulham defender Tosin gave Spurs the win, although Dele will be upset that his flick was deemed to be not on target and thus given as an own goal.

Mourinho made two changes from the side that won at home to Burnley, by bringing in Doherty and Davies as the full-backs. We had some nervy moments as Fulham came close to scoring and also had a goal ruled out for handball in the area; but we a scraped a win and now top 4 looks a lot more hopeful. Another home win against Palace and we will really be in the mix for the top 4, COYS!

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new podcast from Spurs95:01 the best Tottenham Fan podcast available. Today it is time for Spurs – Burnley Instant Match Reaction.

A great win for Tottenham Hotspur as we beat Burnley 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, with the star of the show Gareth Bale. The returning Spurs star scored two goals and also had an assist for a goal by Harry Kane and laid on numerous chances for Heung-Min Son and Luca Moura. Lucas Moura scored a great goal and Spurs moved up the table to 8th with 39 points, 6 points behind West Ham in 4th with one game in-hand.

After being 3-0 up after the first half, Spurs scored anothergoal in the second half and had numerous other chances to extend the lead to 5 or even 6 goals, but it wasn't to be. Of equal importance to the win was the clean-sheet by the defence, with outstanding performances by Sanchez and Toby, this must be the first-choice CB pairing moving forward.

Next game for Tottenham Hotspur is Fulham away on the 4th March, another three points there and the top 4 is definitely back on. We hope you like this detailed analysis by Spurs fan and you enjoy the raw Tottenham fan reaction to the result!

West Ham 2-1 Spurs English Premier League Instant Match Reaction

Another defeat, this time 2-1 to bitter London rivals West Ham heaps more pressure on Jose Mourinho. Spurs have now lost 5 out of the last 6 games and there is no end in sight to this bad run. We are now 9 points behind West Ham in 4th with just one game in-hand. West Ham played well and again we were found wanting at the back. Another awful performance from Eric Dire contributed to the first goal and we were all at sea for the second from Lingard.

Only when Bale came on the second half did we show any fight or aggression and we got one back through A Moura header from a Bale corner. Bale played really well in the second half setting up numerous chances and also hitting the bar - we nearly equalised at the end after a lucky deflection off Son, but it wasn’t to be and another record goes as Moyes gets his first ever win against Mourinho, can things get any worse…oh forgot, we still have to play Arsenal away!!

Wolfsberger 1- 4 Spurs Europa League Round of 32

A comfortable 4-1 win for Spurs away to Wolfsberger of Austria – the tie was played in Hungary because of Covid restrictions. Son scored the opening goal after a great cross by Bale, who added a second after shooting past the keeper from inside the box. Lucas added a third after a mazy run and we went in 3-0 up at half time.

In the second half, a stupid foul by Sissoko gave them a penalty which they converted. Then the defence fell apart again and Wolfsberger hit the bar – a couple of inches lower and it was a 3-2, and they also had other chances. But we hung on and Vinicius got the 4th towards the end - all in all it was good night and we are virtually guaranteed a place in the last 16 of The Europa League.

An expected defeat 3-0 away to Man City and we discuss what is actually going on at Spurs and why a team that was top in December is now languishing in 8th place and with a real chance of not being in the top 4 come the end of the season. A classic match in the FAC sees us lose a thriller to Everton 5-4 after extra time. After being ahead, then being behind, Spurs lost to Everton and so will not be winning the FAC this year. It was a good attacking performance, but defensively the same old mistakes still exist and need to be fixed in the summer. Now on to the small matter of Man City away in the league!!

Spurs 2-0 West Bromwich Albion Premier League Post Match Analysis

Spurs got back to winning ways with a hard-fought but in the end comfortable 2-0 against WBA at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. The team was invigorated by the return of talisman striker Harry Kane and after missing a few chances in the first-half, he duly obliged by opening the scoring in the 54th minutes, slotting home after a great pass by Hojbjerg. With his partner in crime back, Sonny also got on the scoresheet in the 58th minute, after a great assist by Luca Moura! All-in-all a great result against the bottom side who have often been a bogey team for Spurs, onwards and upwards now to Everton on Wednesday for the 5th round of the FA Cup!

Yet another defeat to Chelsea as Jose Mourinho loses three home games on the trot for the first time in his careers. Another abject performance from the team sees us losing more ground in the race for the Top 4 and Chelsea moving above us into 6th. Carlos Vinicius made his premier league debut and spurned a glorious chance to equalise near the end…onwards and upwards to our bogey team West Brom at the weekend!

Brighton 1-0 Spurs Premier League

Another appalling performance by Spurs sees us lose 1-0 to Brighton, a team that hasn’t won a single home game this season, until Spurs turn up!! We thought it wasn’t possible for Spurs to play worse than they did against Liverpool, but yet again they proved us wrong by playing unbelievably bad against Brighton to lose 1-0; Brighton is fighting to stay in the top flight and we made them look like Barcelona. The tide is turning and now unless things pick-up, Jose has to go!!

We discuss the appalling performance in our 3-1 home defeat to a supposedly weak Liverpool. Even without their first-choice centre backs and Fabinho, Liverpool was too good for Spurs and ran out 3-1 winners. It could have been even worse as Liverpool had a goal disallowed for handball.

This was probably the worst performance in the Mourinho era and now leaves Spurs struggling to make the top 4 with no chance of winning the league being 8 points behind leaders Man City!

Wycombe 1 - 4 Spurs FA Cup 4th Round Tie Post Match Analysis

In this podcast we analyse the 4th round FA Cup win at Wycombe Wanderers. Spurs fielded a team with a lot of changes and after chances were spurned, Wycombe took the lead and things got nervy for Spurs.

Bale had his best game so far but his fitness needs improving, and the big turning point was an equaliser from him just before half-time. In the second half Jose brought on the big guns Kane, Son and Ndombele and finally we scored three more goals, 2 for Ndombele and one for Winks!

Not a great performance but onwards and upwards to Everton and the 5th Round in 2 weeks’ time.

Sheffield Utd 1-3 Spurs Premier League Post Match Analysis

Listen to our podcast as we discuss the encouraging 3-1 away win at Sheffield Utd to move us to 4th in the table with 33 points. An early headed goal by Serge Aurier was followed by another beauty from Harry Kane. In recent games we have thrown away slender leads and we were left worrying again when Sheffield pulled a goal back through McGoldrick.

But a wonder goal by Ndombele restored our 2 -goal cushion and from then on, we defended stoutly and could have indeed increased our lead through numerous chances. Overall a very good performance and an 11-day break from the league before we play Liverpool at home.

Spurs 1-1 Fulham Premier League 13th Jan 2021

Listen as we discuss the very disappointing 1-1 draw with Fulham – it’s the first time in 13 London derbies that Fulham haven’t lost! We took the lead through a great header by Kane after a wonderful cross by Reguillon, but as usual we sat back, invited pressure and Fulham equalised late in the game. We did have chances to win, with Son hitting the post and the Fulham keeper making some great saves, but Fulham also had chances and could have won. Onwards and upwards we go!!
