These 4 special episodes delve into the rich history of international dance collaboration between France and the United States. Mutual artistic influences have not only shaped the dance landscape but have also given rise to a new generation of innovative artists and choreographers. Discover the transformative power of cross-cultural collaboration, resulting in a more inclusive and diverse dance scene, with choreographers and dancers Noé Soulier, Ashley Chen, Wanjiru Kamuyu and Emmanuelle Huynh.


The Host - Roslyn Sulkas is a prominent dance critic and culture writer for The New York Times. After studying English literature and earning post-graduate degrees from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and University of Jussieu (Paris, France), she immersed herself in the Parisian arts scene, becoming the Paris correspondent for Dance Magazine, Dance & Dancers and Dance International, as well as writing for magazines and newspapers in the U.S. and Britain. In 1996, Sulcas relocated to New York, balancing roles as an editor for publications like Saveur and House & Garden while contributing dance reviews to The New York Times. In this fourth and final special episode, Wanjiru Kamuyu reflects on her artistic exploration during a Villa Albertine residency. Here, the dancer and choreographer delves into her "Fragments" project, which explores the body as a repository of lived and inherited experiences. Her artistic journey began with questions about how to translate research into movement that is both engaging and meaningful. Kamuyu grew up in Kenya, where she felt validated and affirmed, but moving to the U.S. exposed her to new concepts of migration, race, and identity, which have since become central to her work. Through extensive research and interviews with diverse individuals, including epigenetic scientists, scholars, and somatic practitioners Kamuyu explores how ancestral experiences influence our well-being and physicality. Her work bridges different cultures and perspectives, shedding light on the power of dance as a tool for healing and understanding the human experience.

Host Rachel Donadio, a Paris-based writer and culture journalist, is joined by Anne Lafont, art historian and Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. Anne’s research has greatly influenced the way that art history takes up the question of race and its representations. During her Villa Albertine residency, Anne embedded in New Orleans to study the material culture of the local Black experience, with a particular focus on the connection between Black history and the French-speaking Americas at the beginning of the 19th century. This research also led Anne to a study of Marie Laveau, a Creole princess and Vodou practitioner who became an iconic figure in the city, but who appears in very few images from the period.  

Anne discusses her findings—and the differences between French and American conceptions of race—in this episode. Tune in!
