SDWA S03E17 - Tiffani’s Gold

Hey there, Olympians! On this very special episode (yes, another one), we find Tiffani turning to steroids to help give her an edge for the National Volleyball Tryouts. Not sure why we are capitalizing that but it seems like a big deal! Also, it took three whole seasons to figure out that in the Latin alphabet, Tiffani ends with an I. Hmm… The rest of the gang doesn’t help as they keep pressuring TIff to make the cut, along with a really problematic head coach. There’s a silly subplot of the gang having a stud contest to help cut the tension of everyone’s favorite bassist JUICING, but it’s barely worth mentioning outside of Mark being a big DORK. Will all Tiff’s unbridled rage, nursed from mommy abandonment issues and scorn from a past relationship with the local heartbreaker Jake, finally boil over at the surface and explode? The mercury has been cooking for a long time and we finally see the tea kettle scream!

James and Peat are welcomed by our lovely friends, Imran and Sofia, once again from the Dance of Joy Podcast. We promised them that if they showed us theirs, we would show them ours. They help us make sense of all this unchecked aggression in the seemingly quaint lower California oceanside town.. Do we get any music??? Tune in to find out.

We whisk ourselves away on our Cessna plane to Connecticut to catch up with Rory and Lorelei on Gilmore Girls. Rory’s best friend, Lane, has a band that gets an offer to play CBGB’s in New York City. The rest of the episode has a disturbing amount of subplots that we do our best to navigate. We bring back our resident Gilmore Gal Sofia Javed to help us make sense of this cultural phenomenon from the late aughts.

Why did Adam Brody leave the band? Why is Sebastian Bach allowed anywhere near children? Did they find a real green room to shoot in? And does Luke ever take off his ball cap during lovemaking? SDWA S03E16 - The Treasure of PCH

Ahoy there, fellow urban explorers! This is the second episode of California Dreams this season that hinted that our gang loves scavenger hunts more than being in a band. LAME! But, here we are, to solve all the riddles on Surf Dudes with Attitude. After a well paying (and increasingly rare) gig on the pier, the gang is manipulated into a wild goose chase by Jake and Lorena. The incredibly toxic couple is trying to prove that money will ruin friendships and lead to distrust! The teenage harbingers marionette the rest of the gang to several locations with phony clues and promises of a big booty. And the big wager for their unnecessary and cruel bet? A kiss… between a well established couple. Ugh.

James and Peat try to stay positive in the new song we do get to hear. They debate on whether Tiff is playing out of a guitar or bass amp and Peat makes a wild confession that he doesn’t dictate his life according to his favorite pizza restaurant. As we wind down the season, we just want to thank everyone that is still listening and being on this fun ride of ours! Next week, we have a kick-ass SIDE PROJECT episode where we are zipping off to Connecticut to see how the other half lives with Gilmore Girls! Rory’s best friend, Lane, has a band (with Sebastian Bach for some reason) and they get a chance to play at CBGB’s. So, obviously… we got thoughts. See you at Luke’s Diner!!

Aloha, pharmaceutical friends. We have another entrepreneurial episode of California Dreams to talk about here at Surf Dudes with Attitude. We have a confusing plot as the entire gang is really excited (yet again) to tackle a school project. This time, it’s about starting their own business. They somehow land on exploiting Sam’s great grandmother’s legacy AND her entire Asian heritage in one fell swoop. That’s convenient! They steal an old recipe for a cold remedy to cash in on the pervasive flu outbreak happening at PCH. Things get casually racist and we are in store for a pseudo dream sequence, Sly dressed as a germ and ZERO band practice.

James and Peat marvel at the gang's ambition to take on the Medical Industrial Complex while also musing on the legality of their teacher’s seed money for these shoddy businesses. Drink plenty of fluids for this one and call us in the morning. See you at Sharkey’s!!

SDWA - Interview with Michael Cade (CORRECTED)

The mothership has landed. The O.G. of California Dreams, Michael Cade, AKA Sylvestor Winkle, sat down with the crew of Surf Dudes to discuss his tenure as the manager of everyone’s favorite high school band.. Like his character, Michael doesn’t hold back. But, we were both relieved and humbled that he could roll with the punches and didn’t hate us! Unlike his character, he's an incredibly gracious and warm person. We had a great time talking about California Dreams, his storied career and what he’s up to now. He helps answer all of our burning questions from the last few years of doing this podcast: Was Sharkey’s attached to the school? Is Sly an orphan? Where did his sociopathy come from? And would future Sly be indicted in a financial ponzi scheme (definitely yes).

Though we can’t defend everything his character has said over the years, it could not have come from a nicer person. Thanks for being on the show, Michael! And we look forward to another sit down where we hyper focus on an episode in a zesty roundtable discussion. Possibly with the rest of the cassssstttt??? Stay tuned… See you at Sharkeys!!

Tony finds himself in the middle of a gang war as his old friend Darren from COMPTON stirs up a hornets nest when their fellow bandmate JR (whom we never see) is attacked. I kid you not… There is an actual gun in this episode… of California Dreams. There’s not a concert. There’s not a bass slap. There’s not a guitar trill. There’s nary a snare drum pop. But there is an outside shot with a showdown at the CD corral!

Peat and James try desperately to count the number or people in the final scene that show up in record numbers to solve the American violence epidemic. Oh, and the rest of the band get jobs as singing telegrams and wear gorilla suits to break the tension of this heated episode.. No, we aren’t joking. Make sure you’re strapped! Watch out, greasers! There’s a new bad boy 30 year old man at PCH. Tommy begins hassling Jake because he wants to be Warchief. It’s worth noting that Tiffany finds this to be a hugely attractive quality in a mate. Just sayin… Jake gets spooked after an accident and becomes a hall monitor at school. Ughhhh, okay. Everyone is not acting like themselves while tripping all over this plot. But, we do get the psychiatrist from the Terminator franchise playing the school principal again. He may or may not be threatened or pregnant.

We are joined by siblings Imram and Sophia from the Dance of Joy podcast to investigate the wacky cousins Larry and Balki in the sixth season episode “Out of Sync”. Inexplicably, Balki gets a record deal and becomes a hip hopper. Problems arise when they don’t read the fine print and the harsh reality of the music business rears its ugly tentacles.

James is abuzz with excitement getting to watch a show that actually features some music. Peat is still puzzled over who wrote the lyrics to this musical number. Luckily, our Perfect Stranger experts shed a little light on any lingering questions. They were an absolute blast to have on our show. SDWA S03E10 - Daddy's Girl

Calling all Surfers with abandonment issues… this episode is for YOU. We see another few drops in the bucket of Tiffany’s vitriol as we talk about the California Dreams episode “Daddy’s Girl”. If you’re catching up, Tiffany’s mom abandoned her when she was young. Then, she came back and teased her with affection a life in New York City, only to be dropped again. So, it’s just been Tiff and her pops since then. Now Tiff’s dad finally finds a fellow wet biologist for romance but now their daddy/daughter time is massively interrupted! Will they strike some equilibrium in the Smith Aquarium Household? Meanwhile, Mark has a B-plot shoehorned in here where he basically invents Tinder and incepts the idea that Jake/Lorena and Tony/Sam are a bad couple. One of those is a thousand percent correct, by the way.

James chimes in from middle America in Nebraska and Peat vehemently defends this episode, despite having some of the WORST guitar miming by Jake that we’ve seen yet. Tiff Tock… this time bomb of RAGE is about to explode. See you at Sharkey’s!!

We did it. We pulled it off. After narrowly escaping a real life Yeti last week, we have had to call in reinforcements to tackle this week’s episode. Our former co-host and amazing bezzie, Z (Zac Fable) pops back in to discuss this episode of California Dreams. And we are all LIVE in the same room!! The gang takes a television class at school and wouldn’t you know it, Tony and Sly get some of that sick syndication money when their show is noticed by a weirdly present TV executive in the classroom. How will they maintain work/school/life/band balance? Can their friendship survive being local public access celebrities?

This is the first time all three Surf Dude hosts have sat in a room together. It’s something to marvel at! The power of this show, am I right? Peat has some questions about the child protection measures for these television contracts. James wants to know why Mark is playing a stoner in a skit. We’re taking a chartered flight out to Colorado (??) to Lorena’s dad’s ski lodge to see the Dreams perform a weekend residency. But trouble strikes when local rumors of a yeti emerge, threatening to disrupt the construction of a new skiing slope. Yes, that’s actually the plot this week.

Will our nepo baby princess ever learn the true meaning of hard work? Will Jake be flexible at all with his strict, heteronormative dogma? Will Tony learn to embrace mysterious, folkloric cryptids? And will Old Man Guffrey stop defecating all over the public trails? Peat remembers this episode fondly as a child and is just as disappointed with it as an adult. Hey there, Promise-Ring wearers. This week, we delve into the dark world of lust, envy and betrayal on California Dreams. Mark, whom everyone knows is the heartthrob of this show, puts his mitts all over Jake’s girl, Lorena, and the entire Dreams enterprise is threatened. The gang immediately thinks it’s an amazing idea to tell Jake, whom everyone knows is emotionally mature and level-headed, and he quits the band!

Meanwhile, Tiffany is still bottling up her rage, Sly kisses Sam for reasons, Jake hates his mother, and we get the worst possible guitar miming this show has had to offer (so far). Why can’t we just hang out and be in a band with Tony exclusively? Do teenagers play Monopoly and watch Nick at Nite? SDWA S03E06 - The Long Goodbye

Calling all Samantha Wu-Tang fans! In this breathtakingly continuity-dense episode of California Dreams, the boys at Surf Dudes HQ say goodbye to one of the best actresses on this show. Thank you, Nikki Cox for elevating the decor around here. Sly and Allison must face a tough reality when she decides to move to Chicago to teach blind people how to blind more better. There’s an inane subplot with some dress-up, a dream sequence and more than a few drops in the bucket of rage that is called Tiffany.

We get a SECOND outside shot in California Dreams’ history and, wouldn’t you know it, it’s for another emotional breakup! There’s DIDDLY SQUAT for music and band stuff in this episode unfortunately. There is some cutlery talk that really gets Peat HYPE and James is clocking a lot of LPE’s (laughs per episode) the last few weeks. In other exciting news, we might be closer to discovering the truth behind Pierre. See you at Sharkey’s!

Following our in depth and eye-opening interview with Sir Zachary Throne, we jump in our Cessna plane and head up to Vancouver to talk about the short lived American band drama, “The Heights”.

The single season series focused on a young band navigating their way through life, love and surviving in an anonymous city surrounded by very-obvious-sounding Canadians. Zachary Throne played the keyboardist and gave us some slick insight into the production, music writing, overnight success and subsequent cancellation of this forgotten cult-favorite.

Peat and James are here to talk about the absurd amount of characters, instruments, sub-plots and 90210 connections this week. They also take a hard look at how different their life would have been had they had a dimly lit pool hall in their youths to hash out the trial and errors of adolescence. Hear how this northern sister show to California Dreams came to be and how, inexplicably, it lost the war despite having a #1 single under its belt.

Interview: Zach Throne

Not to spoil anything but a lot of the cast of California Dreams didn’t actually sing or play instruments live on the show. I know… BUMMER. But we managed to track down some of the people responsible for those iconic pretending-to-be-teenager voices! We sat down with Zach Throne, multi-talented and faceted artist with a long rap sheet of credits. He dubbed in the singing voice of Mark on California Dreams as well as providing a lot of the studio guitar and bass in seasons 3-5. Yet, he has never met his alter ego, Aaron Jackson!

We talk about how he got the gig after his short but pivotal role on the Heights (California Dreams’ Canadian competition show!) and what it was like to have a #1 song at the same time. Zach has spent the years being a working musician, which is nothing to sneeze at, as well as an accomplished voice-over artist for shows like Spongebob and Avatar. He has toured with KISS, Aerosmith and an absurd amount of others. He’s currently in Corey Taylor’s band, Jerry Cantrell’s band and soon to be in the Surf Dudes band, whether he wants to or not.

Heya, you uncultured Onionheads! We’ve missed you! We are finally back from our seasonal break. We are diving straight into Season 3 as we meet a cast of new characters and strategically omit any mention of the ones no longer with us. Matt is GONE, the garage is GONE and so is the band’s equipment. Rest assured that Sly probably sold it on the black market or something. We’re in a new loft and are introduced to Lorena and Mark. Only one of gets to be in the band and if the writers knew what was good for them, we would have seen some Octagon death match for it.

We welcome James Oliva back to the show as a full time co-host as we dissect our new surroundings. Peat has trouble adapting to any sort of change but can relate to Jake’s writer’s block. Meanwhile, George does some stellar candy-themed, Canadian centric detective work. Can the Dreams find a new songwriter for the band? We have a lot of fun content planned for this season. And maybe, just MAYBE some more of this cast will finally answer our Andy Dufresne-ing two letters a week and come on the show.

SDWA S02E18 - Indecent Promposal

We did it! Again!! This podcast just turned TWO seasons old! For this gut-wrenching season finale of California Dreams, we see the band in various states of stress regarding the upcoming prom. Jake doesn’t want to go while the rest of the gang can’t find dates. They get a sweet summer residency offer but only if Tiff involves herself in the flesh trade (again). Will her and Jake’s relationship be strong enough to withstand this passionate new, brokered, romance?

Zac is flabbergasted to hear the plot summary of the original ‘Indecent Proposal’. Peat gets the fire detector going off for how HOT this episode becomes. And last but not least, for the first time in this show’s history, WE SEE AN OUTSIDE SHOT! The world DOES exist outside of this bomb shelter universe. Praise the Lord in the outside SKY!

We also want to take a moment to commemorate Brentley Gore’s last episode. Once again, Matt Garrison gets shafted big time and while the show doesn’t acknowledge his exit, we sure as hell are going to! Thank you for all your contributions to the show. For bringing actual acting and musical talent to the show, along with the realism to a lot of subjects where the writers would have fallen short. So glad to have spoken with you behind the scenes throughout this podcast and it’s a true testament that you’ve kept up with music all these years. Now, come on the show and spill some DIRT.

SDWA S02E17 - Dirty Dog Days (Special Jenny Episode!) Video

Don’t touch that dial because we are back on the west coast with California Dreams! On this completely-misplaced-in-the-episode-order adventure with the gang, we see the ‘return’ of Jenny Garrison! Actually, this episode was supposed to be aired second in this season but for some unknown reason, it was shown as the second to last episode instead! It feels a bit like time travel. But, what a treat seeing the lone family member of Matt one last time.

The band gets illegal and hijacks some airwaves and Milli Vanillis some people’s hearts by pretending to be a British band. It’s a bonkers-ass plot but, somehow, really enjoyable? Peat has some thoughts on the FCC making an official appearance for a crime of this caliber and Zac pontificates on life, while trying to read the squiggly hot glass on the wall. Once in a blue moon, we take our Cessna plane to far off lands to dissect other media that’s band-centric. This week on Side Project, James and Peat get bulked up on the Paleo diet while talking DINOSAURS! What started as a silly idea to watch prehistoric abominations of religion play in a band quickly morphed into some sharp social commentary about racial prejudice, predatory record labels and sexual harassment in the workplace. What??!! It’s true! Perhaps we were too young to appreciate the dark satire that this short-lived sitcom offered. But, we are definitely here to appreciate it now with adult, musician eyes.

Robbie helps a band of mammals score a recording contract, only to find out that - SPOILER ALERT -

music labels have been screwing over clients since Pangea. We get four banger songs in this episode accompanied by some sick puppetry, courtesy of the unmatched Jim Henson. James confesses this show shaped his entire worldview and Peat is worried about the morbidly obese patriarch of the Dino family. Zac and I were joined by fellow California Dreams historian Mallory to dissect the lucky thirteenth episode of this sophomore season. We got to watch an episode together, see our notetaking processes and look deep into each other’s eyes while hotly debating each topic. Matt falls for a new babe at school only to find out she’s only in town for her Scooby Doo villain of a father to tear down Sharkey’s! How will the gang save their favorite maybe-school-cafeteria!!?

Though, we have never resorted to doing multiple dress changes, illegally commandeering dangerous high rise cleaning machines and putting on our best posh accent to snag an audition. So maybe we messed up there.

Ohh naur. It happened. We were threatened with some looseygoosey writing this season that led us down a path of silliness, non-continuity and questionable-at-best narration choices. And the “Coop De Grass”, as Sly would say, would be this old west dream episode. Highly debated in California Dreams fandom, it's become a hotbed of controversy over here on Surf Dudes with Attitude as well.

Tony passes out and has a dream about fighting his new girlfriend’s ex, Beau. WARNING: This episode is NOT rootin’ or tootin’. In fact, we reckon it's one of the worst ones yet. There isn't any music and Sly is doing a Nutty Professorship the entire time as different characters.

We're joined by special guest Billy Shinker. He's an audio engineer and works in the film industry. In this week's arith-meticulasly convoluted California Dreams episode, the gang has to study for midterms. And let's just say it's a wee bit stressful. Meanwhile, Sam wants to get her freak on with the school hunk, Darrin. Only problem is that he's a real scuzzbucket who's only using our favorite teenage singer for her strong math skills before the big test!

We do get a new song in this episode so praise His holiness for that one kindness. It had a rapping section that spits rhymes about studious time management. Peat tells us about one genuine gut-buster laugh he had during the episode and Zac tells us about his favorite lunch lady growing up (his mom). SDWA SIDE PROJECT: ALF - Don't it Make my Brown Eyes Blue? (Season 1 Episode 8)

This week, we take our catamaran out on a short trip to the San Fernando Valley to visit the Tanners (no, not THOSE Tanners) with their own loveable, Subterranean Homesick Alien living with them. That's right, we are talking about the German sensation (no, not Hasselhoff) ALF! Our titular, 300 year old alien life form makes a music video in hopes of wooing a 16 year old girl that he lives with… yuck. To help dissect this Robitussin nightmare is Wicked Ida on the podcast! They're a professional puppeteer and musician. So, we are demanding answers. This spaceship-sized turd of a series aired four seasons in the mid 80s and had a notorious reputation for being hellish and grueling to work on.

We discuss Alf’s astonishing post production capabilities, his fretboard technique (surprisingly good?) and the Tanner patriarch’s terribly toxic attitude toward his wife. This episode of ALF was almost as good as a Jeff Dunham special. That's the truth!

Welp, we did it. We finally convinced one of the cast from “California Dreams” to come on our podcast! And he couldn't have been a lovelier human. Jay Anthony Franke joins us from TomorrowLand in Melbourne, Australia to chat. And he didn't hate us! We definitely hit some California Dreams lore for the fans out there but we also do a deep dive into Jay's life, pre-and-post Jake-Sommers. We discuss working with Ozzy Osbourne, learning ballet, TV residuals, auditioning for John Waters and why California Dreams isn't on streaming yet. We also check out Jay's impressive guitar and gear collection for his musical livestreaming.

He's an accomplished actor, musician and video game tech designer. His work voicing J.C. Denton from the iconic, cult-favorite Deus Ex game series revolutionized RPG game play and showed what heights dramatic video games could attain.

Jay settles the Swamp-Ass controversy started by this podcast, the Two-Jakes Conspiracy Theory and spills the refried beans on if he actually learned the songs he performed on the show. We can't thank him enough for coming on the show and hopefully opening the flood gates for the rest of the cast to follow suit! This just feels like a whole new show, I gotta tell you. After 13 episodes, we’ve traded in an entire Garrison sibling for a new, shiny SCHOOL! That’s right! They shunter all of our conspiracy theories about their homeschooling and head to a real, live, learning curriculum. They meet Jake Sommers in this episode and boy, is he a rough-edged, babe-magnet with a soft penchant for writing soft, sweet stanzas. Matt is having trouble writing lyrics… could this be KISMET or KISS-MEt?

Peat is obsessed with Tiff’s wet hair after a whole season of surfing LIES. Peat has already spoiled that this is the last appearance of both parents (RIP Dick and Melody) as well as the titular Dennis. Thoughts and prayers are welcome in this difficult time. We dive into what might have actually happened to Dennis as he gets relocated to that great actor farm upstate to join the many other brethren that have been raptured from TV Land.

We finally get to see a goddamned living room set. The Boom Mic makes a special, late-season cameo and we discuss muscular lip-aerobics. And does the Beta version of cast-favorite Jake make a first appearance in this episode? You be the judge. Peat, Zach and George discuss gratitude for completing this first season of their podcast. Tiff was abandoned by her mom at five years old and has somehow turned out to be a beautiful and caring soul despite that trauma. That is until her deadbeat matriarch shows up unannounced and asks Tiff to come live with her in New York!

James is hell-bent on discussing Scientology and Tiff's bottled-up rage. Zach defends the California Dreams' dancing capabilities and Peat just wants to know how old everyone is pretending to be. Also, the disappearing piano makes a comeback and Zach claims this episode might be a slightly coded allegory to the Wizard of Oz and the industrial revolution. Side Project Full House - We Got the Beat (Season 8 Episode 18)

Every month of so, we will be whisking ourselves off to distant lands to talk about other tv shows and movies that cater to musicians like us! That's right! We are non-monogamous with our primary podcast partner, California Dreams. For the inaugural episode, we swim over the bay to San Francisco where we'll discuss the Season 8 episode of Full House travesty that is GIRL TALK. Stephanie starts a new band but just drops the ball on every other aspect of that process. Uncle Pompous Pompadour inserts himself into these teenager's (ew) band by becoming their manager.

We relish in the schadenfreude when this nepo baby fails in the highest order. We want to see more of the real stars of this show, Kimmy Gibbler and Derek. DJ is trying really hard to be relevant and unfortunately Joey Gladstone has not been decapitated by a city trolley. We can't unlearn all of Jessie's band names throughout his yogurty life and we genuinely sit in silence missing the California Dreams. We can't wait to spoon all of you again. See you at Sharkey's!!

Uh oh... It's our first 'very special episode' of California Dreams. Probably one of many. Surprisingly, this was done quite tactfully and with care. In this racially charged episode, Tony has to decide between getting a new amp for the Dreams or having a two-faced bigot butt as a future father in law. There's intense gear discussion, Disneyland romance, and a jingle that genuinely slaps!

The Dreams perform a new song called "One World" and quite nothing can prepare you for the rapping section from Matt and Tony. Who's playing the drums? We don't know. Just go with it or you'll be kicked out of this country club permanently, mmmkay?

We have got another scandalous episode of California Dreams to discuss. In this Lifetime-based journey, Tiff and Jenny find themselves at odds with a classic love triangle. Ted has rode back into town on his horse made of Docker shorts and skinny-privilege after losing a substantial amount of weight. They make and quickly break a pact not to ask him out. Will the band survive this devil's triad?

We discuss our favorite New Kid on the Block, the band negotiates a residency at Sharkeys for scraps of food, and after some detective work we figure out what bass Tiffany is assaulting with her poor string-winding technique. Fat-shaming Shamu whales, personalized band posters and KUNG POW OW makes Zac giggle.

They have obligations to Randi Jo's sister's toxic wedding and a luau at Sharkeys. Which one gets the axe? Can they possibly do both?

WARNING: This episode has a lot of rollerblading talk. There's an Urkel reference, Chippendales outfits and a blessing of, like, four songs from the Dreams. Also, Tony embezzles from his job. We have a full-on Battle Royale this week on Surf Dudes with Attitude. The Dreams are set to play the annual Sharkey's Battle of the Bands against their bitter rivals, Bradley and the Billionaires. The band hatches a scheme to play matchmaker with Matt and the lead judge, Angela, in hopes to win. But, they are from vastly different backgrounds. HOW COULD THIS EVER WORK? Matt is the least offensive rock star and Angela had a full-on Laney Boggs reverse makeover to make her seem like a nerd.

A podcast TEN YEARS in the making...

'Surf Dudes with Attitude' is the #1 podcast about the 90's teen sitcom "California Dreams". Okay, so, we are also the only podcast of its kind but let's not quibble! The show centered around a high school band as they navigate life, friendship and songwriting. Their choices are questionable, their fashion is exquisite, and their music is... well... we will let you be the judges of that. It's dated, sometimes cringey but also surprisingly wholesome?

Peat Rains and Zac Fable, two career musicians will meticulously and tirelessly break down all 78 episodes of this show. Peat was inspired at a young age to become a musician, partly because of California Dreams! Zac, well, he had never heard of it before being bullied onto the podcast. We'll be analyzing all of their musical business decisions from an industry standpoint. We'll be covering the songs and dissecting them based on music theory and our objectionable taste. Special guests incoming. Patreon/Discord also set up for bonus content including reviews of other band-centric TV and film, commentaries and Q&As.

Neither of us surf and we're actually quite agreeable people. Peat can't sing and Zac was homeschooled so he has no foundational understanding of how a high school operates. We're completely qualified here.
