Periodically -- Father Philip visits the United States to conduct Mass and raise money for his school and college students in his country.

Our recent visit to the Statue of Liberty gave me the opportunity to speak with him again – this time about my country and his thoughts on tolerance in human interaction.

I sense we are going to survive this insane and dangerous moment – we have in the past. Maybe this time we can come out the other end of our self-produced lunacy with an improved sense of who we are – and have always been -- and start living in peace and with respect for all our neighbors. A difficult lift -- but possible.

The U.S. American Bar is singular. Whether in NYC or Creston, Iowa, our bars feel and sound like us -- no matter what color hat we wear.

This “Surviving Trump” edition of Bar Crawl Radio podcast is a compilation of two barroom conversations, First up – to the porch of Gebhard’s Beer Culture Bar on the UWS of Manhattan with the bar’s owner and motorbike enthusiast– Matt Gebhard.

Second, BCR traveled to Hot Air Brewing in a small town in Iowa with bar owner – Katie Davidson and farmer and drag queen star Ryan Fuller and two Catholic Worker friends -- Brian Terrell and Betsy Kenan. I am Alan Winson with my co-host Rebecca McKean – trying to survive this perilous moment.

In Rutger Bergman’s 2020 book “Human Kind - a hopeful history” — a grandfather tells his grandson about a terrible fight going on inside him between two wolves. One is evil–angry, greedy, jealous, arrogant, and cowardly. The other is good–peaceful, loving, modest, generous, honest, and trustworthy.” He tells the boy that these two wolves are also fighting within you, and inside every other person.’ After a moment, the boy asks, ‘Which wolf will win?’ The old man smiles. ‘The one you feed.”

USians — that is — U.S. Americans have been fed hate - distrust - anger - isolation — the evil wolf has devoured many of them

Others are in deep dismay.

Many of us are searching fo a positive action — At BCR podcast — we choose to talk to human beings who work to build trust and respect between neighbors / who work for insight and complex understanding of a difficult society — of mixed and mixed up relationships .

“Surviving Trump” is a new BCR series in which we will share one program a week from our archives and upcoming shows that feature hope and growth — that realize the aspirations of “we the people” and the unfolding dream of “forming a more perfect union” out of the strength of diversity.

Quite simply — with “Suriving Trump” we want to feed the good wolf.

"Surviving Trump #1 -- Rob Fersh & Convergence." Founder and Senior Advisor of the Convergence Center for Policy Resolution.  Before that Rob worked on international conflict resolution and directed U.S. national policy consensus projects on health care coverage for the uninsured -- and U.S.-Muslim relations. Before that -- Rob headed up a major NGO working to alleviate hunger in the United States. He has worked for Republican and Democratic representatives -- Leon Panetta and Patrick Leahy and Edmund Muskie. In 1994, Rob received the Prudential Foundation Prize for Non-Profit Leadership. 

For this BCR conversation we talked with Rob about his recent book "From Conflict to Resolution" and his work to get groups in opposition to find commonalities.
