Sports commentator and Journalism graduate Chris Sharples is our final guest of Season 2 as he joins us in our MediaCity studios for a conversation about one of the most intriguing jobs in sports media.

Based up on gantries at sporting grounds around the world, the life of a live commentator can be cold and difficult work whilst also being the dream job for many sports fans around the world.

Chris sheds light on how he got started in the industry by covering non-league football and how its taken him to cover UEFA Champions League games and also cover hockey for the global Olympic feeds in Tokyo and Paris.

S2, Episode 11 - Energy House 2.0's Artist in Residence Special - Mishka Henner & Emily Speed

We are back at MediaCity for a very special episode with the two leading artists in residence at the University's Energy House 2.0.

In partnership with Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool and Castlefield Gallery in Manchester, the University of Salford's Art Collection is hosting two unique artist residences at Energy House 2.0 - a world leading energy performance research centre at the University.

Mishka Henner, a Manchester-based artist who is known for often challenging conventional perspectives with his art, completed the first of the 18-month artist residences in 2024 culminating in the stunning 'The Conductor' piece which echoed the Energy House by channelling all the world's lightning strikes through a single percussionist performing inside a reverberation chamber at the University's Acoustics Laboratories.

Emily Speed, an artist based in the North West, who is known for examining the relationship between the body and architecture, is the current artist in residence and is due to complete at the end of 2024.

The work of both artists is in response to Energy House 2.0's research, exploring themes of the climate crisis, net zero research and the future of housing, with the works to be presented at Castlefield Gallery in Spring 2025.

We're joined by Andy Reynolds, UK & Europe Chief Executive of construction consultancy firm Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) is this episode of Talking Salford.

Andy started his career working on construction sites in Essex before he became the first in his family to go to University to study Quantity Surveying at Salford during the 90s.

Following graduation, he chanelled his passion for the built environment industry to propel his career forwards at RLB and over the last two decades, has risen through the ranks to head up its UK headquarters in the world-famous Shard building in London.

Speaking to us from his office, Andy shares how his upbringing shaped his career journey, his memories of Salford and his thoughts on improving diversity in the built environment sector and why lifelong learning is important for CEOs.

Speaking to us from Adidas' global headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany is Michael Haley.

Michael undertook a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the University of Salford and Clarks Shoes where he conducted biomechanical research on children over two years.

After completing this in 2022, he has started working on his PhD at Salford and landed the role of a lifetime at the sportwear giant later that year.

He packed up his bags and headed to Bavaria where he is a Manager for Athlete Servicing at Adidas, working with the sportswear brand's Premier League footballers who have exclusive contracts with the company and ensures that the footwear is tailored to their individual liking.

Caroline Redman Lusher is the founder of Rock Choir - the world's largest amateur contemporary choir and a professional singer who has featured on songs that have sold millions of copies in the UK.

In this candid interview, the BA Popular Music and Recording graduate shares her story. From learning violin at the age of 4, to touring nightclubs in Birmingham at 14, to struggling to get a record deal in London and to then achieving global success with a choir that now holds three Guinness World Records.

Caroline popped into Radio Studio A during her UK tour with Rock Choir this January for an exclusive chat.

We welcome one of the new leading faces at BBC Radio 1, our BA Radio and Television Production graduate Vicky Hawkesworth.

In July 2022, Vicky made history when she was announced as the co-host for the station's coveted afternoon slot, replacing the legendary British broadcaster Scott Mills. The show would also be the first daytime show recorded by the station outside of London - with Vicky presenting from the BBC's studios in MediaCity.

Vicky joined us in Radio Studio C, a stone's throw away from her presenting chair to talk about her journey in radio, being thrown into the spotlight and is the first guest to play our new game show - Salfact!

Many dream of working in the film and television industry but how many have considered a career in finance production?

To explain why budding financers should be queuing up to break into this industry, we asked Netflix's UK/EMEA Head of Studio Finance & Strategy Kelly Phillips to come on the podcast and explain her career journey.

From arriving in Salford in 1996 to study Accounting, Kelly was always going to do her utmost to work in the industry and after taking her first job within days of her last exams here, she's gone on to become a Financial Controller on huge TV shows such as Black Mirror.

A move to Los Angeles in 2017 was a once in a lifetime experience and now Kelly is in charge of setting Netflix's studio finance strategy across the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia!

In a very special episode of Talking Salford, we returned to Radio Studio A to sit down with MA Media Production graduate Luke Davies who is now a Creative Producer at his own production company, Polari.

But the focus of this episode is Luke's immensely personal story of his search for his birth father that has been captured in the lauded Stranger in My Family documentary for BBC Three.

With the documentary now released, we dive deeper into more of Luke's story, how he told his parents about his DNA test, how it felt to have his first meeting with his birth father on a film set and how he and his family are planning for the future.

For our first guest, we welcome back journalist and neurodiversity consultant Nick Ransom back to campus. Nick graduated from our BA Television and Radio Production programme in 2018 and has since gone on to work on a number of groundbreaking television projects including the BBC documentary Inside our Autistic Minds with Chris Packham.

Nick found out he was autistic in his second year of University and went on to found the Neurodiverse Media Community group to make neurodiversity more visible in the media industry.
