Andy Rowland was given a Scalextric Grand Prix set as a child, but unlike the rest of us he turned that fun into a passion for modelling and engineering which eventually brought to us all the range of 1970s F1 cars by Policar.

All slot car clubs have their own character - and characters. On the south coast of England, in an 18th Century barn, Worthing HO Racing is a club with a difference.

Started in 2010 with local government support, the aim was to involve the surrounding community, initially racing HO cars. Fifteen years later, last month alone, the club welcomed 60 people to its events, many coming for the first time. They still race HO, but also 1/32 digital and the latest addition is slot rally.

What makes the club so successful?

Slots At Solstice

Giddy with excitement ahead of Christmas, or possibly too much Night Nurse, Scott sees strong hints of a new Carrera Ferrari and muses on the morality of modelling dead men's cars. Nick has Super Glued his specs, but paints on through the haze only to discover the much anticipated ScaleAuto Mitsubishi is too wide for Slot Rally GB. Undaunted, he's also converting ancient Airfix kits into yet more rally cars and looks forward to buying more StaffsSlots wheels.

As it's the season of giving, Nick answers the question you've all been asking (OK, one listener's question) about his NASCARs. As ever, there's a tale to be told.

Return of the Saint

Excited by upcoming motorsport movies (yes, plural), we wonder if the story of Walter Röhrl might better be told by a grand Wagnerian opera. There's lots of Germanic intrigue, treachery and triumph, not to mention iconic cars from Lancia and Audi, even a secret mid-engined, 4WD Mercedes.

Nick has been tempering his frustration with the postal system by stripping in the cause of saintly loveliness while Scott is overjoyed to have his rims renewed and pleased to encounter some stiff stub axles.

There's also a story about a brave goose and a man called Goldfinger which is not only true, but somehow slot car related. You'll have to listen to find out how.

While Fly's release of a tiny Tom Cruise might be satire, is the model of the late tiny Queen Elizabeth's 911 treason? For one thing, where's the Corgi? Fortunately, Scott has a solution.

Nick, fresh back from the Wye Valley Club slot rally in Abergavenny, reports on how the bargain bucket Scalextric Subarus got on and asserts, quite assertively, that a NSR Porsche 911 is not a rally car no matter how many co-drivers you add to it.

There's also talk of Super Bonkers Skinny Motors, Tungsten putty and overheated tyres, all news to Scott who probably should het out more.

Posing the questions other slot car shows shy away from, we ask this week's guest, Tom Howard, world rally reporter at Autosport magazine: "Have you got axel mankers?"

Nick has discovered how affordable old Scalextric Subarus are and has embarked on a mission to relivery as many as possible: where there's a decal, there's a way. Meanwhile, Scott is still digging out old rally cars, this week a classic Fly 911s and a Team Slot Lancia.

There's also debate as to the merits of brown bar magnet cars, speculation on which Ford puma WRC will be better now that Scalextric UK has finally released its version, and simple jealously that the new Holden is already out in Australia.

Scott has gone rally-mad ahead of his trip to Wales for the Abergavenny Rally Slot Car Club summer event. His excitement is palpable. Expect Manta banter, news of Nissans and mention of Mitsubishis to come.

Pedro's fondness for rally cars is more muted, despite confessing to owning several SCX Seat Cordobas, so he throws in an impersonation of a much loved regional retailer to cheer himself up.

Also, how warm English beer is not the best thing to strip the paint off (of) a Stratos, a scarily long list of Pedro's W.I.P and some scenic daydreaming triggered by Magnetic Racing's most excellent wares. There is some schooling on GT classes at the upcoming Le Mans 24hrs, but as it is right at the end most folk won't have to listen to it.
