There is much work in planning for a life-changing event, like moving to a very beautiful and very expensive place like Hawaii. Let's say you are planning to move there. What kind of planning will you do?

You can plan on meeting new people, certainly, and you can plan on being up to five hours behind your friends and family. What about the fun things to plan for; the exciting things that drive you to make the move in the first place? These are the things you "plan" for while staring off at red lights and at your cubicle at work: Evening walks along beaches, reading favorite books under palm trees, hiking to hidden waterfalls within lush rain forests, and leaving behind the version of yourself that was created by this old place you’ve called home all these years.

Then you hear a voice, whether it be a friend or family member or the voice in your head, ask, how will you live? You set out to generate a new list, some might say a more practical list, of plans: Find a job, find a place, find a place you can afford, wait - find a job that pays well, then find a place you can afford. Cars - transportation - how will you get around? Is there a bad part of Hawaii that you should steer clear of? What does google say about all this?

Then you have the plan to implement the plan - find the job, find the place to live, buy the plane ticket, put in your two-week notice at work, get rid of the stuff you aren't taking - wait, what stuff are you taking?

As the daydreamy plans fall to the side and the work of actual planning takes over, moments of excitement and fear do a little waltz in your chest at odd times each day. With a one-way plane ticket in your inbox and your eye on the big day every time you look at your phone or the bottom right corner of your monitor at work, you realize even more new plans that need to be generated. You need to plan on missing people. You need to plan on being alone for a while as you get adjusted. You need to plan on not knowing where anything is or what the names of streets are and that nothing will look familiar. You need to plan on having moments of wanting to go back to what you know.

There’s much planning to do and, depending on your personality, you’ll focus on one type of plan over the other plans that go with a move like this. But there is one plan that I’ll bet nearly everyone overlooks. It’s the type of plan that can make you, in your new environment, astonishingly successful or astonishingly unsuccessful. This type of plan is usually realized too late, causing us to say, I wish I’d have thought of that before doing this.

You’re going to hear Lisa talk about this type of plan. She’s the subject of the One-Way Ticket interview. At 20 years old, she bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii and, 22 years later, she tells her story...from Hawaii. There won’t be a moment during the interview when she says, this is the plan that most people overlook. She’ll just talk about it as casually as she does while telling her story, describing life in Hawaii, sharing her insight about Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian people, and universal matters that affect us all.

Let’s see if you can hear Lisa talk about the plan she had that most of us will completely overlook.

Hosted on Acast. She collected her one suitcase and then walked past numerous arrangements of airport décor; bright, foreign-looking flowers and exotic vines with leaves that struck her as being impossibly lush and too unreal-looking to actually be alive. She walked through a doorway that led outside where the calls of gate announcements became noticeably distant.
Sitting in a cafe, drinking a hot cup of something delicious while it snows, is a fantastic way to spend time. The conditions were recently just right for such an occasion. I entered a cafe, brushed snow from my jacket, and took my hot drink to an empty table where I intended to revisit an old book and maybe write some ideas into a journal. All was going to plan until I noticed the gentleman sitting at the table next to me. He was drinking coffee alone with two cameras resting on the table. I asked a question about the cameras, which slowly lead to a reflective and philosophical discussion about photography and his identity as a photographer. I had my new recorder on me and, fortunately, he said yes to recording our conversation.

Hosted on Acast.
