Black Bookstores, Muslim Memory, and the Architecture of Liberation

The story of Black bookstores cannot be told apart from the story of Black Islam in America. Across cities such as Boston, Harlem, and Newark, bookstores, mosques, and community institutions formed an interconnected intellectual ecosystem where literacy became more than reading—it became a practice of identity, spiritual formation, and collective self-determination.

In this teaser salon, author, independent scholar, and communications strategist Qasim Amin Nathari joins cultural historian Latifa Ziyad to explore how Black Muslim communities helped preserve an intellectual tradition that continues to shape America. Drawing upon more than three decades of leadership, scholarship, and civic engagement, Nathari reflects on the evolving promise of Islam in America, the legacy of Malcolm X, and the profound transition that followed the passing of Elijah Muhammad in 1975.

The conversation traces a geographic and cultural journey from Boston's Masjid Qur'an to Harlem's Books & Things and onward to Newark's Source of Knowledge Bookstore, examining how these institutions became unofficial universities where books, ideas, and community converged. Together they ask whether Black bookstores did more than sell literature. Did they preserve a moral imagination, cultivate future leaders, and sustain a distinctly American expression of Black Muslim life long enough for another generation to inherit it?

Ultimately, this dialogue asks what remains when movements evolve, institutions disappear, and memories begin to fade—and whether books continue to carry forward the unfinished work of liberation.

Her work demonstrates that meaningful social transformation often begins not with large institutions, but with ordinary people who choose to read aloud to children in neighborhoods, parks, libraries, and community spaces.

Her philosophy mirrors what historians have long understood about Black bookstores throughout America. These spaces did not simply sell books—they cultivated readers, thinkers, organizers, entrepreneurs, and movements that reshaped American democracy.
