Chloe Jacquet:

Chloë Jacquet is a multi-slam winning, multicultural, multifaceted spoken word artist based in Gloucestershire. She was 2017 Oxford Hammer & Tongue slam champion and reached the semi-finals of the National Slam Finals at the Royal Albert Hall in both 2018 and 2019. As well as her own headline slots at poetry nights and festivals across the UK, she has supported artists such as Elvis McGonagall, Joelle Taylor and Hollie McNish and her work has featured several times on BBC Radio (4, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire & Bristol). Giovanni 'Spoz' Esposito

SPOZ…is an award winning performance poet, singer / songwriter, film maker, playwright and was the poet-in-residence at Birmingham City FC. He has been seen on BBC and Central Television, has written for and been heard on … BBC Radio Four, Radio Five Live, Radio West Midlands, Radio Coventry & Warwickshire and Capital Gold. He has performed at the Glastonbury Festival, Shambala Festival, Larmer Tree Festival, Cheltenham Literature Festival, Oxford Literature Festival, Warwick Words Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival, Wenlock Poetry Festival and was ‘crowned’ Birmingham’s eleventh poet laureate in October 2006. He continues to work extensively in schools, lifting the appeal of writing and performing poetry to hitherto, unseen heights. Check out his website Spoz

Bio:

Maria T. De Stefano (aka Maria T) is a poet born and based in the West Midlands. She writes on social and political issues and observations.

She also draws from her own personal experiences particularly as a child growing up in an immigrant family, and on being a carer for her mother. Her poetry has been described as, “Venom in a velvet pouch.” (Giovanni ‘Spoz’ Esposito).

She has performed and been interviewed on the BBC Hereford&Worcester Radio Upload show, Brum Radio Poets and the Poetic Podcast. She recently supported Attila the Stockbroker in Stourbridge. She has recently been headline/featured poet at several poetry events including Yes We Cant, Speak Your Mind, Ooh Beehive, Accessability Arts. Her poetry was recently featured in the multicultural dance theatre production “Melting Pot” in Worcester. She currently has a poem featuring in an exhibition at the prestigious Worcester Porcelain Museum. Linette Rabsatt:

Linette Rabsatt is a Virgin Islands poet with roots in the BVI and USVI who began writing in 1996. You can find her work in her Kindle book, "Be Inspired: Poems by Linette Rabsatt," in Pulse Poetry Magazine, on her blog, Words of Ribbon, and on the Visual Verse and Micromance Magazine websites. She was nominated for a 2024 National Spoken Words Award for Best International Artist and won the 2024 Read Yuh Ting TOO Virtual Caribbean Poetry Contest.

Ade Couper:

Former Worcestershire Poet Laureate Ade Couper was born in Bedford far longer ago than he cares to remember. Ade lives with multiple sclerosis, has worked in health and social care for the last 20 years, and is an activist for human rights and disability rights. His 1st collection, "Made of Stories" was published by Black Pear Press"

Lorna Rose:

Lorna Rose is a slam winner and has headlined various acclaimed nights such as Hit the Ode and Jawdance, toured with Apples and Snakes and performed at festivals like Glastonbury, Ledbury, Shambala and Moseley Folk. Her poems have been published in Amethyst, High Window and Anansi Archive. She directed Ten Letters, an intergenerational poetry show about Birmingham and was part of the Decadent Divas and the New October Poets collectives. She has three poetic spoken word solo shows under her belt, poems from which can be found in this collection.

About the author 

"I always knew I was different. I had nothing much to talk about with the other little boys and I was far too scared to speak to the girls, but at the same time I could never shut up. Showing off was the first thing that ever came naturally to me with writing as a close second. Pouring over the lyrics of Alice Cooper, Maiden and Megadeth records finding a treasure trove of long, obscure words that weren’t meant for nine year olds, I became fascinated by language and the power it had to take the endless flights of fantasy from the inside of my churning, pre-adolescent mind and make them into something real. The composure required to write the novels I’ve planned and abandoned a thousand times has always been a concern for others. Poems and lyrics suit my short form bursts of intense and obsessive creativity and inability to focus on any one thing for more than a few minutes, so very much better. A lifetime of failed bands and an urgent, all consuming need to describe the demons I’d been wrestling with in the cloying summer of 2018 brought me to spoken word in the autumn of that year and here I’ve stayed. Everything that’s kept me separate up until this point is what has given me a home in poetry and my new band. With my wife, my son and the beautiful oddities that I get to call my friends. I will never not be an unstable boi and finally, after 43 years, I know that’s ok."

Ash Bainbridge (they/he) is a queer poet, home educating parent, and student midwife with a flaming uterus. They light fires for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sexual and reproductive healthcare. In 2022, Ash recieved full mentorship with the word association. Their poems have since been found in mum poem press, solstice literary magazine, the Winnow and Inksac. Ash's debut poetry pamplet Trans-crip-t explores life living as a trans person with endometriosis. Ash is on the bill at the New York Poetry festival and will also be hosting a small spoken word event at Sugar daddy's in Worcester on Saturday 22nd June 6:30pm.

Emma Clowsley is a writer, performance poet, host, and sometime improv'er. She's also a card carrying National Trust Lesbian! 

She's described as "unflinchingly honest, laugh out loud funny, and at times profoundly relatable."

Her debut pamphlet 'Don't Forget Your Toothbrush' was published by Flight of the Dragonfly Press in May 2023.

Becky Leonard-Dixon is a Yorkshire lass living in the midlands. Her work explores mental health, bisexuality, allyship, trauma and hope. She is a visible advocate for bisexual women within her local community. A spoken word artist who has performed at Worcester theatre's queer arts initiative 'saucy', at women's writes 2022 led by the Worcestershire Poet Laureate and at both Malvern and Worcestershire Pride. She is an award-winning Stonewall Role Model and inclusion champion. She has appeared at Cheltenham Literature Festival as a former and compere for the collective Standing Proud. She has also been published in five poetry anthologies so far...

Becky Hemsley is a British poet and author who lives in Leicestershire, in the middle of England, UK. She has written four collections of poetry, a children's book of her viral poem Breathe and a children's book of the poem Starlight. She has appeared on mainstream radio and top ranking podcasts and her words have been shared across the world. Her aim is to help people realise that what they feel is universal and that they are not alone - words of hope and healing are always her aim.

She loves taking Autumn walks with her family, dancing with her friends and sitting in coffee shops with her notebooks, watching the world go by for inspiration. She is particularly passionate about the power of children's stories to develop, encourage and inspire.

May being mental health awareness month was the month I published my first debut collection 'Life and Rhymes'. A collection full of poetry that addressed mental health in general as well as maternal mental health too. Unstable boi

"Unstable Boi" is the culmination of a musical odyssey that began in 2008, when Ryan and James united as Great Imitation. Their journey includes triumphs like winning the esteemed Surface Unsigned competition and electrifying crowds at UK festivals and Sziget Festival in Budapest. Garnering recognition from Kerrang! and BBC Introducing, their fusion of alternative hip-hop, guitar, and explosive performances made a lasting impact.

Following a hiatus, they resurfaced in 2016 with the EP "iamgrim," delving into darker, heavier tones. Now, in 2024, they've reinvented themselves as "Unstable Boi," embracing a fresh electronic, minimal, and soulful sound that heralds a new era in their musical voyage.

Prone to tugging at your soul with their tales, Ashley is also able to produce the odd happy poem. Usually about cats or dragons and faeries!

They have been published in many anthologies over the years and won multiple slams. A fan of trying all poetic styles, on the stage and on the page. Ashley's debut collection, "Those Days, These Days", is out now, available on Amazon or direct from them. This is an exploration of their life as a loud and proud genderfluid queer, and the passions that keep them sane and fighting.

April is Autism Acceptance month, with today in particular being world Autism Awareness Day. I have been so lucky to meet so many amazing poets who are also on the spectrum and wanted to use this episode to celebrate and raise awareness for the Neurodiverse community as a whole. I wanted this episode to be about celebrating our differences and putting them out into the world for everyone to see how colourful we are. All of the poets that have submitted for this episode are, or have contact with those who are neurodiverse. So come and step into the minds of these incredible poets.

Alison Wilkinson

Alison is a 60 something Mum of a 38 year old son on the Autistic Spectrum. As well as dabbling with poetry, as she does beautifully, Alison also runs Jades Jars, a jam and chutney business, alongside her husband Dave, (a keen poet himself). The poem that Alison submitted is a brief insight into what life was like when her son was a child.

Lauren Ruddock

Lauren (they/them) is an agender, autistic, neurodivergent published poet born and 

raised in York. They have been around the ‘poetry scene’ for what feels like a long time, (at least to them!) now, but only began writing poetry in mid-2020…which feels like an absolute lifetime ago. Often found appearing at York Spoken Word, Prickly Pear, and various online open mics, Lauren has additionally co-hosted open mic events for York Ending Stigma, and has been a supporting poet at Poetry for All in November 2023. They also had

their pamphlet, ‘Scenes of Silent Horror’, published in 2023 with prettytatteredsoul,

themed around their own experiences of emotional abuse and trauma.

Ashley Edge

Courtney Ward

Courtney is a neurodivergent writer, artist, music and charmed fan and advocate for others. She speaks the truth loud and clear, turning the heartache into heart-make.

She’s a published poet featuring in many places including In anthologies: “our time and space” and “rhyme and reason” by writing East Midlands. 

She’s performed at festivals such as Kettfest multiple times, and also at AGM’s for local charities in Northamptonshire supporting young people that are autistic and also with mental health.

Beth Williams is a Black country based writer who knows the hardest words are often the ones that go unspoken, who isn't afraid to delve deep into the emotions that are easier for us not to talk about. Recently released her debut poetry collection - Waiting for the blue - is an anthology that centres around grief, how it reshapes everything and shows how we can hold on to love in spite of it all. A poet who writes from the heart, and aims to speak to the raw vulnerability inside us all, letting her words reach out to embrace those who need it. 

Genevieve Ray aka Genevieve fire poet is a UK artist from Bedfordshire England. She has worked in performing arts for over 15 years and has directed, performed and written plays in London. Genevieve moved into the world of poetry and spoken word art over the Pandemic as part of her healing process and journey to better understand her own neurology. She has taught poetry, performance and career skills to people across the UK. In 2023 she performed for Quintessential Poetry Radio, POETS of the East, Glouchester Poetry Society, Souls of Gold, and five book launches.

Robert Punton is an aging adult who has never grown up in his head, he is only a young boy. Labelled disabled at an early age he has constantly fought to free himself from those chains that society shackled him with. For forty years he has made a name as a disabled activist, blocking roads, occupying buildings, storming parliament, even being chained to the Whie House all in the fight for disabled people’s rights. Robert is on the national steering committee of Disabled People Against Cuts

Robert is a committed Marxist. In 2015 he stood for parliament in Perry Barr Birmingham

In 2016 Robert discovered he has a talent for writing poetry and has been honing that skill ever since. In 2018 alongside his friend Manjit Sahota from Nottingham he founded Poets Against Racism, from small begins PAR has bloomed across the country. We have reached the far-off shores of the USA, where our American cousins have started Poets Against Racism and Bigotry. Both Manjit and Rob agree this is their greatest achievement. Robert loves working with Accessibility Arts and promoting people’s abilities, overcoming their disabilities.

Wherever you find Fascists and racists congregating Robert will be there facing them down.

But that's not all - DK founded AccessAbility Arts, a group that works to make the arts accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or background. And with a commitment to inclusivity and diversity, DK seeks to lift up those who have been marginalised and give them a voice through his performances and workshops.

Jason N Smith is an award winning writer and spoken word artist and has performed at Roundhouse, Royal Festival Hall, Tate Modern, National Theatre, The St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace and various festivals and events nationally. He has also been involved in BBC Listener Project, National Prison Radio at BBC Broadcasting House and opened HMPNPS National Care Experienced Peoples Conference at Leicester Race Course.

Jason has twice read at London’s Literature Festival, among other festivals and launched Koestler Arts anthology after judging the spoken word category awards and features in the anthology with his platinum award poem: ‘Stop and research.’ Jason has published a popular collection of poetry titled: Beyond Words and has also released an album and book titled: The Word with ‘I Witness band.’

Currently Jason facilitates workshops helping young artists develop material and coaches on performance.

David Thompson 'After Oxford and the Sorbonne, David Thompson worked in Ibiza and back in Oxford before moving to New York as a translator at United Nations headquarters, followed by five years with the UN in Bangkok as translator, editor and interpreter. He then joined WHO in Geneva, where he spent many years in editing and publishing. Later he worked as a free-lance editor and writer in France. He now lives in Frome (Somerset), with particular interests in music, sketching and pottery, poetry and natural history. His two published collections, 'both by Hobnob Press' are 'Days of Dark and Light: Recent Poems', which appeared in 2021, and 'Where the Love Is', which came out in 2023.'

In the episode I share an abecdarian poem I wrote last year. An abecdarian poem as I describe in the podcast is a sort of alphabet acrostic poem. each line starting with a new letter of the alphabet in order. Just to note that when this episode was recorded I had yet to read Charlotte's book, but now I can leave my review of this cleverly written autobiography written from the heart about the brain.

Charlotte has a way of writing that transports you into her brain. It's not just the contents of the book that shows you what it's like living with autism, but the writing style that almost sounds like dialogue. It's not a conventional book, but a conversation with Charlotte herself and there are so many amazing nuggets in this book where I was laughing out loud and wanting to give Charlotte a big hug and say "I understand". Charlotte Faulconbridge is a prize-winning poet, published author, and musician. Her website, Inclusive Creatives, was founded to give neurodivergent and disabled creators a safe space where they can express their talents. Her debut book, Too High to Function, captures what life can be like living on the autistic spectrum. Taking the reader on a journey of self-acceptance, Charlotte pairs neuroscience with personal experience as she helps to paint the fullest picture of autism and everything that comes with it.

The Ghost of Liverpool Empire is a poem set in the Liverpool Empire which came from this article https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/nostalgia/les-painter-grey-lady-ghosts-21914601 which details the following story – “Another of the Empire ghosts is that of a young Victorian girl.

Though many who have performed at the theatre report extra-terrestrial activity, like slamming doors and chill winds, this ghostly child is perhaps the most creepy of all the spectres who haunt the Empire.

She walks the Stalls bar area of the Empire Theatre while her crying can be heard late at night.

It is thought that the girl fell to her death from the circle into the stalls, breaking her neck.”

It is believed this happened around 1890. "
