Excited to announce the Rebranding and Relaunch of the Podcast.

3 years ago – May 2016 , we launched our first ever podcast episode.

It has been hell of a ride. Over this time, we have chatted with over 100 Professionals for The CareerMetis Podcast.

We have had interviews with Career Coaches, productivity experts, professionals, branding gurus,etc.

As the host, I have personally learnt a lot from each of my guest, and it was an amazing learning experience.

We realized that the show lacked focus i.e. each episode was distinct even though we had a few series (Career Expert Series, Leadership Expert Series, A Day in the Life of,etc.). In order for a show to thrive, it is imperative to have a focus so we can provide a consistent experience for the audience /listeners.

So, we have decided to focus only on one particular series – “A Day in the Life of”. 

We are re-branding the podcast to “The Career Insider Podcast”.

Moving forward we will be interviewing individuals from different walks of life, and they will share their job or profession during our chat. This is especially exciting because there are 100s of jobs out there, and this type of information is what job seekers are craving.

So we are really excited about this major pivot and the new focus that the show will have moving forward.

GUEST INTRODUCTION – MICHELLE M. GOMEZ

Michelle M. Gomez is an accomplished business executive and her specialty is being a slayer of imposter syndrome. As well as being a published author, she helps other high achievers find inner peace, overcome their demons, and rid themselves of the debilitating effects of impostor syndrome.

1) As a young Latin woman, Michelle started her career at 19 in the male dominated Logistics and Transportation industry. She fell into it and had a rough time, but with coaching, training and sheer determination, she managed to do more than survive, she’s thrived within the industry and after 2 decades is still active within it!

She explains that it’s difficult to help people improve their inner dialogue about themselves, but having been through it, she has an easier time developing more self worth and confidence.

3) Michelle talks about our bodies being able to detect the truth of something, even if we don’t acknowledge it. She describes how impostor syndrome can manifest itself in other ways if you choose to ignore it rather than deal with it.

4) Michelle also talks about leadership, and how it can be impacted both positively and negatively depending on your level of self awareness.

5) Michelle also speaks about work-life balance, and how to master both in a way that allows you to not only love your life and job, but be productive and positive in both places. Being present has a lot to do with it.

1. After being in education for many years and being dissatisfied with her career, Gorett knew a change had to be made. She took a day off for reflection, and found her answer and began life and career coaching after researching different schools and programs.

GUEST INTRODUCTION – KWAME CHRISTIAN

Kwame Christian is the director of the American Negotiation Institute, he teaches us about an alternative way to resolve conflict. He’s a business lawyer, and serves as a negotiation consultant for attorneys and companies closing large business deals. On top of that, he also hosts the podcast Negotiate Anything.

1. Kwame’s initial academic love was psychology, and he achieved a bachelor of psychology before turning his focus to Law. As a result of his interest in psychology, his approach to negotiation differs from that of most lawyers and attorneys. He uses his knowledge and skills to teach others how to negotiate more effectively in order to resolve conflict in a much more impactful way.

2. Kwame tells the story of a day at the playground when no one would play with him, and how that day shaped his determination to be liked. Respect came later when he decided to become good at conflict instead of avoiding it. We negotiate every day, and mastering the skill is life changing.

Jerri Williams served 26 years as a special agent with the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation).

During her career, Jerri specialized in cases targeting major economic crime and corruption.

Post retirement, she has served as the spokesperson and director of media relations for SEPTA, which is Philadelphia’s public transportation provider. She also produces a popular podcast called FBI Retired Case File Review. Beyond all this, Jerri’s also a published author!

Episode Summary

1. Jerri Williams got her start as a juvenile probation officer before an ad she saw had her moving into a much different role in the FBI. She describes the role of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and a small glimpse at a few of the 200 violations of Federal Law that they investigate

2. Jerri gives some insight into what someone who wishes to join the FBI needs to know, including their age requirements, drug policy, experience needed and things you need to consider before considering a career with the bureau. The application process is competitive and health and experience are essential to being chosen.

3. Jerri lets us in on the day to day demands on an FBI agent, and how every case can require different elements to be in place. Manpower, resources, time, warrant and various other things all come into play, and can vastly impact an agent’s day.

A Day in the Life of an Interior Designer from our guest Darci Hether.

Guest Introduction – Darci Hether

As an esteemed interior designer located in New York City – with projects that span coast to coast and internationally – Darci Hether specializes in luxury, full service, turn-key residential interiors

Episode Summary 

1. Since her childhood, Darci Hether has had a strong affinity toward interior designing. It was not uncommon for her to rearrange her parents living room or her bedroom furniture. Not knowing it was a viable career, she was prepared to take courses until she found what she enjoyed.

2. After helping a friend with a design project, Darci found her passion and pursued it without regrets.

3. Darci goes into detail about what an interior designers do, and how it differs from what we see on HGTV. Her firm takes the project from conception to completion, and that takes a lot more attention to detail and communication than most people are aware of.

4. Darcy outlines her day to day, complete with meetings, outlines, marketing, client relations and communication. She also has to stay on top of the marketplace to see what’s new and available for her next client.

5. The selection process and curating the items for presentation tends to be Darcy’s favourite part of the process. When she was a solo entrepreneur, she had to run it all, and there were parts of her job she didn’t enjoy as much, but now that she has a team she gets to focus on business development. Bringing in the finishing touches and injecting the client’s personality into the space makes her truly happy.

6. Darci shares her thoughts on how someone who is interested in becoming an interior designer could get started. She feels that both design and business courses could make a huge difference in the success of a new designer.

After another shift in the market, Ben broke free from the company he was part owner of in outer to start Transcription Outsourcing and offer services to more industries.

Orett Morgan II is a Linux Systems Engineer. His role revolves around designing, building, configuring and troubleshooting Linux systems.

1. Out of school, Orrett Mogan II wanted to be a doctor. He enjoyed medicine, but didn't enjoy it as a profession. After a friend suggested IT, he decided to take it up and switched his major to pursue a career in IT.

2. Watching his debt climb, he decided to drop out and take a different route. Half way through paying off his accumulated debt, he was introduced to a program from Winter Park Tech, and within half a year he had found his first job, and built it into a fulfilling and enjoyable career.

Sydnee Henning began her career as an IT professional.

Before recruiting, she got her start in technical training, business analysis and project management. She moved into sales roles as well, but always within the field of technology.

Ashwin Jacob is a first generation American who learned English through entertainment mediums like television and music. He saw a lot of people he related to within the entertainment industry that ultimately caused him to want to be involved.

He was told it was a pipe dream, but he went for it anyway and has had a very robust and interesting career in various roles within the entertainment industry that has him rubbing shoulders with some of the most talented people on the planet.

1.  Ashwin kicks things off by clarifying the difference between a talent manager and an agent. He explains that an agent is more in the realm of lining up work and deals in the short term for clients, whereas a talent manager has to keep the long term vision in mind and figure out the balance between what is good for the client now, and how it will benefit them or hurt their career in the future.

2. He has to be able to communicate with all kinds of people in order to make things run as smoothly as possible.

3.  He talks about the visibility within the entertainment industry, and how his job directly impacts not only himself and his client, but everyone who is touched by the work that they do.

Brian Howard is a recurring guest on The CareerMetis Podcast and is very knowledgeable about the career management space.

He has written a book called Motivated Resumes and LinkedIn Profiles, and Nissar feels that it's a great resource for anyone entertaining into a job seeking situation.

1. Brian kicks off the discussion by describing what differentiates his book from other books in the career management space. 7. He also puts weight on having a concise summary that sheds a light on your achievements. He also talks about how important it is to be honest on a resume, rather than stretch the truth or embellishment, and what the ramifications of a lie could be.

8. Nissar asks Brian to share his thoughts on employment gaps, and how someone in charge of hiring may view gaps in employment as a bad thing. Brian explains that things have changes in terms of how gaps on a resume are viewed, and although they are generally more accepted today, a gap can still cause issues if it was particularly lengthy, or the candidate was not productive during that time period.

9. He also recommends being forthcoming and honest about gaps, and the reasons why they occurred, and explains that often times the employer will understand, and at times overlook the gap.

10. Brian talks about the various components of a Linked In profile, as well as how to get the most out of them. He describes keywords, and the placement that is the most effective when using them on your profile.

Nathan Hirsch is the cofounder of a startup company called FreeeUp.

Freeeup gives business owners fast access to a hand picked network of professional freelancers in e-commerce, digital marketing web development and much more, who have already been vetted for skill, attitude and communication.

Nathan started off as a broke college student, and he always wanted to be a business owner. He watched all of the struggle and success his mother went through in starting her business, and knew he could do it.

He started off selling textbooks in college, and eventually found his way to Amazon and was hooked. He began experimenting with selling different products, and failed multiple times. He decided to step out of his comfort zone and start selling baby products, and before he knew it: things took off.

He started hiring people, and experienced both good and bad workers during the hiring process.

He learned that a lot of businesses experience the same problem, and decided to create FreeeUp as an answer to that problem.

Samantha Alvarez began her language learning adventure at the age of twelve, where she began by taking on the Spanish language.

After a period of burnout, she decided to learn Japanese and lived in Okinawa, Japan for 6 months, where she immersed herself in Japanese culture and developed a conversational hold over the language.

She moved to Taiwan after and began to learn Mandarin Chinese. Since then she has learned French, German, Italian and currently has her sights set on learning Russian.

She has had 63 different jobs to date, and now helps others who are in need of a career change or a shift in direction.
