The A-36 (Not An Apache) Story with Matthew Willis

The North American Aviation A-36 was a dive-bombing development of the Mustang I that had been specified by the British during the Second World War. The dive-bomber was ordered by the US Army Air Force to supplement their attack aircraft and saw service in the Mediterranean and the China-Burma-India theatres. But the A-36's story is overshadowed by its fighter sister, and matters get even more complicated when it comes to the aircraft's name, which it never officially had.

Author and historian Matthew Willis returns to The Aviation Show to discuss the development and service of the A-36 and champion the Allison-engined Mustangs, which were pretty ace.

The Big Hop with David Rooney

In 1919, four British teams arrived in Newfoundland to attempt to be the first to fly across the Atlantic non-stop, the Big Hop, and claim the Daily Mail's £10,000 prize. The Flight Gallery at the Science Museum London

The Science Museum in South Kensington, London hold a bit of a hidden gem of an aircraft collection. On the top floor of the museum, some of the great aircraft of Britain's aviation heritage are displayed, like the Vickers Vimy that completed the first crossing of the Atlantic, Britain's first jet aircraft, the Gloster E38/29 and Amy Johnson's Jason, to name but a few. Doug Millard, the Deputy Keeper, Technologies and Engineering at the Science Museum, very kindly showed us around the gallery before the museum opened, telling us the stories of this incredible collection.

Spitfires with Becky Aikman

In 1942, a group of American women arrived in Liverpool, England. This group of aviatrixes, led by the remarkable Jackie Cochran, were joining the Air Transport Auxiliary to help deliver the latest aircraft to frontline RAF Squadrons. The Bristol Brabazon was conceived at the height of the Second World War. With the tide of the conflict turning, the British Government set up a committee to examine the nation's future civil airliner needs post-war. The Brabazon I was the first aircraft specified and the first to fly. Its legacy is complicated, and author Alan J Porter joins us to argue the case for the Brab and the legacy it left following its scrapping.

Victoria joins us to discuss her new book, Eagle Days: Life and Death for the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Eagles Days looks at the long summer of 1940 from the other side of the channel and offers some surprising insights into one of the most discussed battles of WW2.

Dr Victoria Taylor, BA (Hons), MRes, AFHEA is an award-winning aviation historian, broadcaster and writer who completed her PhD thesis on the Luftwaffe and National Socialism in the Third Reich at the University of Hull and Sheffield Hallam University. Her main historical focus is on British and German aviation during the interwar period and the Second World War. In recognition of her PhD research, she was awarded the 2020 Royal Air Force Museum Doctoral Academic Prize in 2021.

The Sinking of the Cap Arcona: 3rd May 1945

80 years ago, on the 3rd May 1945, Hawker Typhoons of the RAF's 2nd Tactical Air Force attacked German shipping in Lubeck Bay, north of Hamburg. They succeeded in sinking three large ships and damaging another. Tragically, these ships were crammed with Concentration Camp prisoners that had been evacuated from the Neuengamme concentration camp; over 7000 were killed in the last days of the Second World War.

Join us as we look into what happened on that terrible day 80 years ago.

The Cartoonist of Stalag Luft III

🛫Ben Smotherman was a B-17 pilot who was shot down on his 7th mission over occupied Europe in 1943. He was captured and ended up in the POW camp Stalag Luft III. While he was interned, he drew and painted his experiences in the camp. He also created the intrepid war correspondent Penny, the star of one of the camp newspapers comic strips. His daughter, astronaut Dr Jan Davis, joins us to tell us about her father through the pages of his war log.

Operation Chowhound with Lucy Hanson

In 1945, the RAF and USAAF flew two remarkable operations. Mana and Chowhound were missions to deliver food and vital medical supplies to break the 'Hunger Winter' famine in Occupied Holland. A truce with the Nazis was agreed and the bombers flew unopposed to drop their vital cargo. In Hilversum, south of Amsterdam, was 14-year-old Lucy Hanson, who saw food fall from the sky. Today Lucy joins us to tell her incredible story of life under Nazi occupation and the day she no longer feared the bombers.

On the 10th of August 1944, Harry Hardy joined 440 "City of Ottawa" Squadron RCAF in Normandy, flying Hawker Typhoon 'Bombphoons'. Harry flew 96 sorties (missions) through France, Belgium and Holland and was the pilot of The Pulverizers. In 2006, Harry gave this talk to the Royal Canadian Legion in White Rock, BC.

The original footage has kindly been allowed to be reproduced here by his grandson, Rick Tunstall, and the Hardy Family.

Flying Catch-22 with 'Stoney' Stonich

#Catch-22 is one of Scott Marchand and I's favourite books, so when the opportunity came up to chat with Stoney Stonich, who, as a young pilot, signed on to be one of the B-25 pilots for Mike Nichols' adaptation in 1969, we jumped at the chance. Stoney tells us all about the production, the challenges and the excitement of filming aerial scenes, including THAT hair-raising takeoff and hanging out with the late great Bob Newhart. Stoney also is a T-6 man and helped form the North American Trainer Association. He has had quite the career, and it was fantastic to chat with him on The Damcasters.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Warthog, has been earmarked for retirement for over a decade, but what is happening today with the men and women who keep the Hogs flying into their sixth decade? Col Nick 'Stoli' Radoescu is the commander of the 355th Operations Group based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. He oversees the operations of four squadrons of A-10s and their support units, including the training of the next generation of Hog drivers. Stoli kindly sat down with Boney to chat about his career, the A-10 today and the future of the Close Air Support mission in the USAF, with the spectre of the F-35 hanging over the venerable Hog.

The B-17G Flying Fortress and Painted A-2 Flying Jackets of the 390th BG Memorial Museum

We return to the 390th Bomb Group Memorial Museum to tour their Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 'I'll Be Around' with the museum's Business and Operation Manager Alex Chambers and Executive Director Bill Buckingham. While this B-17 didn't see combat, her service history makes her a unique survivor. We then head upstairs with Director of Archives and Collections Keith Cook to check out the museum's remarkable collection of original A-2 flying jackets from the men of the 390th Bomb Group.

The Frankenplanes of the Pima Air and Space Museum

This week, we explore the fascinating background of aircraft that have undergone restoration, rebuild, or are newly built, focusing on their representation in museums and the complexity of their historical authenticity. We highlight the stories of four specific aircraft in the museum's collection: the Bristol Bolingbroke, the Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, a P-51 Mustang, a Hawker Hurricane and a B-24J Liberator named 'Star of India.' With each aircraft, Pima's CEO Scott Marchand and Director of Collections Andrew Boehly explain the careful considerations behind the paint schemes and in representing their history. Together, they shed light on the meticulous work behind the restoration of these 'Frankenplanes,' blending parts from various sources to piece together aircraft that stand as testaments to their contributions during WWII.

Aerobatics with Mélanie Astles

Mélanie Astles is a remarkable aerobatics pilot, is also the only woman to have won a Red Bull Air Race event at Indianapolis in 2017 and has just placed 5th at the World Advanced Aerobatic Championships in Las Vegas for Team GB. A passionate advocate for aviation and an ambassador for the Pima Air and Space Museum, it worked out that when Mel popped into the Museum last week, she found the time to chat with me about her life in aviation and just what goes into making her aircraft defy the laws of physics.

Mosquito with Rowland White

On Wednesday 21st March 1945, the RAF's 140 Wing of De Havilland Mosquito FB.VI fighter bombers, with an escort of Mustangs, attacked the Shellhus in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Shellhus was the HQ for the Gestapo in Denmark, and most of the Danish Resistance's top men were within its walls. The low-level attack would be the last in a series flown by the men of 140 Wing that feature in Rowland White's latest book, Mosquito. There is more to the tale than the aircraft and the men and women of the Danish Resistance are as remarkable as the aircraft that flew down Copenhagen's streets that chilly March morning.

'Pegs' the Two-Seat Hawker Hurricane with Hurricane Heritage

Hurricane Heritage has the incredible job of operating the world's only two-seat Hawker Hurricane, BE505 'Pegs'. Starting life as a Canadian Car and Foundry-built Mark XII with the RCAF serial AG287, the aircraft was converted and restored to a Mk.IIB 'Hurribomber' configuration in 2007. Just before the pandemic hit, her second conversation to a two-seat Hurricane was complete and now she operates flights all summer all over Europe with a truly unique experience. Richard Bushong heads over to the 390th Memorial Museum and holds court under the nose of the museum's B-17 Flying Fortress and answers questions for all the visitors who approach him. The Many Bombings of Aachen with Dr Philip Blood

On the night of the 13/14th of July 1943, RAF Bomber Command returned to the German city of Aachen again. This time they were carrying what they termed an "arson load". The attack created a firestorm that would take over a day to burn out and kill hundreds. Eleven days later, Operation Gomorrah, the firebombing of Hamburg, was carried out. Historian Dr Philip Blood joins me to discuss the July raid and the many other attacks on Aachen. In this extended episode, we look at Bomber Command's procedures and the intent used to promulgate the bombing offensive and the point at which their purpose became genocidal. Hogs and The Black Jet with Jon Boyd

Lt. Col. (Rtd) Jon Boyd served in the USAF through transformational times. Joining in the late 1970s, Jon would fly the venerable Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Hog to those who fly her, before joining the then Top Secret program that was working up the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, The Black Jet as Jon refers to it. It would be flying the Stealth Fighter that Jon would see combat over Iraq during Desert Storm. Jon was very generous with his time and it was fantastic to be able to walk around one of his old aircraft, 84-0810 Dark Angel, which is being readied for display at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

Well, the trip to Arizona and the team at The Pima Air and Space Museum changed all that. While I was there, I got to spend time with Ramon Purcell, Boneyard Safari's founder and Director of Photography. If you followed the F-117A Stealth Fighter's move to the Pima Air and Space Museum or B-52H 61-009 "Damage Inc. II"'s 9-day 1,407-mile from Davis Monthan AFB's boneyard to Oklahoma City, you know Ramon's work.

We sat down to discuss how he got into this game, the intricacies of photographing and moving aircraft, and greasing the wheels of locals as a massive aircraft crawled through their town. Our chat was a lot of fun and we have more in the pipeline too.

Empire Flying Boat to Australia with Phil Vabre

Flying to Australia is a chore today, but 85 years ago, Imperial Airways and Qantas launched an audacious service with the wonderful Shorts C.23 Empire Flying Boat. These aircraft cut the journey from Southampton to Sydney to around nine days and, more importantly than the passenger service, allowed for a new rapid air mail service across the Empire. Phil Vabre is the President of the Civil Aviation Historical Society in Australia and runs the superb Airways Museum at Essendon Airport, just on the edge of Melbourne. Phil is the chap to talk to about the flying boat service to Australia and in part 1 of a two-part chat, we look at the origins of the service, the creation of the C-Class flying boat and what logistics were required to keep these marvellous aircraft in the air.

Women have been involved in flight from the earliest moments, yet they have been relegated to the margins in most of our histories. So it was fantastic to read Sally Smith's book that brings these magnificent women back to our attention.

From women who flew balloons professionally in the 19th century to the Manchester lass who won the most prestigious air race in the country and the first Briton to go to space after hearing a radio advert, women have fought to be seen as equals and have forever excelled in the air.

Sally Smith is a journalist, skydiver and balloonist whose book Magnificent Women and Flying Machines contains a series of biographies of female aviators that demand reading and chatting about. So today, we look at a few of them and I hope you find these women as magnificent as I have.

The Titan Missile Museum with Mike Riggs

The Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley, Arizona, was formally Complex 571-7 of the Titan II ICBM defence system that was active between 1963 and 1987. The museum houses the original silo, crew and control complex of 571-7 and holds training Titan II N-10. IWM Duxford's Unsung Heroes with Matthew Willis

As we were at Duxford for last week's ace chat with Rebecca Greenwood Hard about the hurricane: Unsung Hero exhibition, historian Matt Willis and I decided to have a wander around and celebrate what we feel are some of Duxford's unsung heroes. As the museum was closing, we had to rush about a bit. Despite the time slipping away from us, we did get to have a look at the restoration hanger and the huge effort going into the Avro Shackleton. In the American Air Museum, Matt couldn't stop me, despite his very best efforts, from getting on my hobby horse about what was the best North American Aviation aircraft of the Second World War. Spoiler - it ain't the Mustang. This is my hill. I'm going to fight you for it.

The Hawker Hurricane has gone down in popular history as 'not the Spitfire'. But when the Imperial War Museum unveiled their latest exhibition at IWM Duxford, Hurricane: Unsung Hero, the avgeek crowd, myself included, went 'unsung?! Never!'. So how better to discuss the exhibition with than the IWM'sHead of Technical Objects Rebecca Greenwood Harding. Rebecca has a broad remit at IWM, so I was delighted that we were able to spend a Friday with the Hurricanes to discuss making the event happen and also delve into the intricacies of managing the IWM's collection. This left me with much to think about. Please stick around for the end, as I have things to say about how we discuss and interact with the institution we love. There are people involved, they are not just faceless monoliths.

Thomas McKelvey Cleaver: The Bridgebusters - Joseph Heller, Catch-22 and the 57th Bomb Wing

Catch-22 is one of my favourite books. My battered paperback copy lives on my bedside table. I have the fancy Folio Society edition on the shelf too. As an unashamed B-25 nut, I do bang on about how the Mike Nichols adaptation, written by Buck Henry, basically saved all the flying B-25s we still have. But, how much of it is true? Heller certainly always maintained he had made it up. Author, historian and screenwriter Thomas McKelvey Cleaver took a look into Heller's war and the 57th Bomb Wing for his book The Bridgebusters, which is finally getting a UK release. Tom found that fact and fiction are a lot closer than Joe Heller ever admitted to.

John Lancaster: The Great Air Race

In 1919, the forerunner to the United States Air Force, the Air Service, staged an audacious transcontinental air race. While flying coast to coast had never really been done before, the head of the Training and Operations Group, Brigadier-General Billy Mitchell. Decided that making it a round-trip race would be even better than just going one way. So in October 1919, using war surplus aircraft, including British and German single-seat Scouts, the great air race began.

Former Washington Post Foreign Correspondent and pilot John Lancaster has retraced the roots of men like Tooey Spaatz and the 'Flying Parson', Belvin Maynard, back and forth across the United States and his new book. The Great Air Race.

Joining us today is Joe Wilding who is an aerospace engineer currently working in the fascinating field of electric aircraft. Joe joined me to look at a number of the concepts currently being explored to make aviation more sustainable that could make aviation have a future after all. Our chat looked at a number of different concepts. In part one of this two-parter, we look at the reasons why aviation needs to change and how the different power sources of power we could turn to will have different effects on the aircraft of the future. Be warned, I go on about hydrogen for a bit. It is the future, you know.

Stephen Walker's Beyond was one of my reads of lockdown. Beyond covers the months leading up to Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 flight that made him the first human in space. Stephen has crafted a fantastic narrative that does not just focus on Gagarin but on the Chief Designer and the team that worked in such secrecy to put him in space.

I sat down with Stephen on the day NASA returned to the moon with the Artemis Orion test flight. We chatted about some of the lesser discussed aspects of what went into creating the book, the tragic Grigory Nelyubov and the myths of the Lost Cosmonauts.

David O'Keefe and Wayne Abbott: Finding Challenger

The Challenger Disaster is one that still resonates nearly 40 years after that the tragedy that claimed seven astronauts 73 seconds into their flight. On the 10th November 2022, NASA announced that a 20-foot section of the orbiter had been found by a team searching for the lost Grumman Avengers of Flight 19. Today I am joined by two of the team of the History Channel's new series The Bermuda Triangle: Into Cursed Waters, historian David O'Keefe and filmmaker and historical investigator Wayne Abbott, as we discuss this incredible find and get the low down on the new series.

Ewan McArthur: Moorabbin Air Museum and Bristol Beaufighter Tour

The day job recently took me to Oz where on my last morning, I went to Moorabbin in Southern Melbourne to visit Ewan McArthur at the Moorabbin Air Museum. The museum is home to an eclectic collection of aircraft with the view to have as many of them as hands-on as possible. The star attraction is their Mk.XXI Beaufighter. Ewan kindly showed me around, and we recorded the tour for you. We do ramble a bit, and we do eventually get to the Beaufighter, so stick with us.

Matthew Willis: The Fairey Swordfish Story

The Fairey Swordfish was an aircraft out of time. Obsolete by the time it was called upon in the Second World War, it was an aircraft of contradictions. Kept in service because her replacement would have taken too much time and resources to build in numbers, the Swordfish was thrown into battles where she performed admirably. And also where it should never have been.

Joining me today is author and historian Matthew Willis, whose new book on the Swordfish looks to delve into some of those contradictions. And explain why it stayed in service when the aircraft that were intended to replace it, like the Albacore, never got to the frontline in the numbers that the Swordfish did.

Chris Henry: Jesse L. Brown, Thomas Hudner Jr. and the Corsair

Jesse L. Brown was the US Navy's first African-American Naval Aviator. With his squadron mates, onboard the USS Leyte in VF-32, Jesse and his wingman Thomas Hudner Jr. struck up a remarkable friendship that would lead to the tragic, heroic events of the 4th December 1950. Tom Hudner's actions would earn him the Medal of Honor, and Adam Makos would write their story in his book Devotion, soon to be released as a major motion picture starring Johnathan Majors and Glen Powell.

But at the EAA in Oshkosh, they found that their F4U-4 Corsair had a direct link to Tom Hudner. Joining me today is the museum programs coordinator at EAA, who was part of the team that researched the history of that Corsair that would lead to an incredible unveiling with the Brown and Hudner families.

Julia Cooke: The Women of Pan Am

The 1960s saw the true birth of international air travel. The glamour of the jet set was only matched by the glamour of the flight attendants that cared for them. as they dashed across the globe. At the forefront of this change in air travel were Pan American Airways and their powder blue uniformed stewardesses.

While the hyper-sexualised image of the stewardesses was capitalised upon by the airlines, the women themselves were in no way stereotypes. Joining me today is author Julia Cooke, whose new book Come Fly the World looks at the remarkable period in the late 60s when Pan Am stated: "Stewardesses Wanted. Must Want The World."

Kenneth Katz: The Supersonic BONE: Part 2 - Rebirth as the B-1B

A change of President in 1981 led to a complete change in US military posture, and with Roland Regan came the rebirth of the B-1 project as a much-refined B-1B with a slightly different role.

Kenneth P. Katz is an Air Force Veteran and career aerospace engineer, returns to conclude the story of the B-1 as the aircraft is raced into service as the B-1B just in time for the Cold War to end. But, the aircraft would prove to be a vital asset for the war that would come and last two decades.

Few modern aircraft capture the attention of the hardened AVGeek more than the Rockwell B-1B Lancer bomber. Designed at the crux of the Cold War, the journey to the aircraft that would enter service after those tensions had thawed began in the heady days of the 1950s when higher, faster and further was the order of the day. To get to the B-1B, we have to start with aircraft like the B-70 Valkrie, the F-111 and, of course, the B-1A.

Kenneth P. Katz is an Air Force Veteran and career aerospace engineer, and he joins me to discuss his new book, the lavishly illustrated The Supersonic BONE, and the amazing journey that the US Air Force went through to get their hands on this remarkable aircraft.

In part one, we discuss the genesis of the B-1, its initial flight testing and how it came into the crosshairs of President Jimmy Carter.

Alaina Lewis: The Art of Wooden Propellers

It is rare when you are doomscrolling Instagram that you find something truly wonderful. Out at Culver Props in Rolla, Missouri, Alaina Lewis makes wooden propellers and finding her on Instagram was a balm in a dark time. Seeing the incredible skill that goes into making true customer propellers for custom aircraft is a joy. And then I got to meet Alaina. Our conversation is wide-ranging as we discuss how her family saved Culver Props, how she learnt the art from her Grandfather, the importance of reading specifications properly and, vitally, what the heck does a propeller actually do? The story Alaina tells is heartfelt and full of passion and skill and makes this podcaster with the softest of hands want to make things. I hope you enjoy it too. Once again, the Riverside app I use to record with my guests decided to play up, so my audio isn't what I hoped it would be. Alaina, though, sounds great, and that is the important thing.

Ester Aube: The AirCorps Library and Saving North American Aviation's Drawings

The sigh of relief that goes up when the phrase "there is a drawing for that" is uttered in aviation restoration houses around the world is palpable. The excitement when tens of thousands of original North American Aviation drawings were announced as being passed to the AirCorps Library was akin to a party. The tale of how Ken Jungeberg saved a treasure trove from the fire is only part of my conversation with the manager of the AirCorp Library, Ester Aube.

Ester is an archivist and one who manages the incredible resource that is the AirCrop Library, one that is available to everyone, not just the incredibly talented team at AirCorps out in Bemidji, Minnesota. In our chat, we discuss how the Library came into being, the intricacies of coping with microfilm, the joys of metadata, how Ken saved his treasure trove of drawings from being incinerated and, of course, this year's Oshkosh.
