1. Congrats to Snarky Puppy! They won for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, which is amazing. We should mention, of course, that we produced a podcast with them about the making of this album. This is their 5th Grammy. Congrats to their whole team.

1. New Inappropriate Happiness with Karina Rykman and Isaac Slone. Karina and Isaac are great—they talk about tours, shows they’ve seen, and a lot more. I look forward to hearing from them every week, and there’s a new episode today. 
2. Merck Mercuriadis talks about the future of acquiring song catalogs. I mentioned last week that Justin Bieber’s catalog had been acquired for $200M, that was Merck’s company, Hipgnosis. In this interview, he talks about the acquisition of catalogs and what it means to him. They’ve sent about $3B over the past 10 years, acquiring 60,000 songs from huge artists across the board. Fascinating.
3. New Unknown Mortal Orchestra double album coming March 17. The New Zealand based band is set to release their first album since 2018, and they have a new single, Layla, out today. You can watch that on Relix.
4. Springsteen is back on tour! This is so exciting. Bruce kicked off the first E Street Band tour in six years in Tampa on Wednesday with a 28-song set that lasted almost 3 hours.

1. AI coming for music. One of the big stories of the past few months has been ChatGPT and how that affects our lives. I’m following this story about Google’s creation on the music side, called MusicLM.
2. Warner shifting vinyl production to decrease environmental impact. One of the big 3 labels says it’ll shift from 180g to 140g vinyl, investing in ways to produce records without PVC, and adopting recycling from production offcuts. They’ll also move more production to the US. Here’s a fact to keep in mind for collectors: Pressing plants can use antiquated steam boilers and a toxic brew of chemicals to make records, giving vinyl 12 times the greenhouse gas emissions of other physical media production like CDs.
3. No Simple Road trucking on. If you’re a Dead fan, or a fan of the jamband and music community, this show is for you. The team does 2 episodes per week, one focused on a weekly rewind, and one with an artist interview. 1. California venue owners react to Senate hearings. Ineffable Music Group, which owns venues in Santa Cruz [The Catalyst, which may be familiar to Phish fans], Ventura, Berkeley, and several other cities, said that effective immediately they won’t take 20% merch fees from artists anymore. 
2. Ace turns 50. Bob Weir’s first solo album, the genesis for so many great songs, gets a deluxe edition reissue this year to celebrate this anniversary. 
3. King Gizzard unveils monster Red Rocks live release. This week we got an 86-track King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard live release from their 2022 Red Rocks run. They played 3 long shows, and wow, this is a great live release. Part of their interesting Bootlegger program.

1. More ticketing controversy. Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing yesterday about whether Live Nation and Ticketmaster’s merger in 2010 has stifled competition and hurt consumers.
2. Bieber Sells Catalog to Hipgnosis. For $200 million, Hipgnosis Songs Capital has closed its deal to buy 100% of the artist’s publishing, as well as his artist royalties from his master recordings and neighboring rights. 
3. The Sphere is Coming. Per our friends at JamBase, the Las Vegas MSG Sphere will be open by Fall 2023. This place is going to be absolutely incredible. The largest LED screen in the world, 164,000 speakers, and “4D features including scent and wind.”
