 Worse yet, Murkwood is hiding a secret. A secret made from the blood of its children. For there are no children in Murkwood. Not anymore. They’ve been snatched into the night, their parents killed, never to be seen again. Whole families sacrificed to create something evil.  

Standing between that brewing evil and the rest of the world are the Foxkeys; Witches born with magic power called Other. Supported by their allies, the Walkers, they are the barrier between humanity and evil. 

Cyrus Foxkey is the last Foxkey chosen to watch over these lands. To protect them as only he could with his magical powers. But that was a long time ago. Now he is old, his body broken, his mind weary. He should pass on his duties to another, but long ago, out of fear, he sent his only daughter away to save her from the cruel burden of their calling.

Even if she were in Murkwood, he would not want her to take on the dangerous burden of becoming the next guardian. Unfortunately, the fates conspire to take away his choice in the matter when he is murdered in his own home. 

His daughter, Vera Fowley, once Vera Foxkey, is a mother, a widow, and now homeless. What she is not is a witch. She knows nothing of her family’s magical legacy, or of the terrible state of Murkwood. Chased by the ghosts of her past from St.Louis, she endeavors to journey into the wilds of Texas with her daughter and brother-in-law, hoping to seek refuge in her father, Cyrus’s, home and begin life anew.

When she arrives in Murkwood, she discovers that not everything is as she had planned. Her father is dead, and her childhood home burned to the ground. Gone is the chance of a new beginning, and Murkwood is nothing like what she remembered. 

People are dying, animals are disappearing, and Vera can’t help but feel that something is very wrong in Murkwood. Little does she know that she is the final piece needed to unleash an ultimate evil upon the world.

 To stop the oncoming tide, Vera must face her family's legacy to save the world, her daughter, Eliza, and her unborn child from the threat of demons. She can’t do it alone; it will take the skills of newfound allies and old friends to join the battle for survival:

Felix Fowley, Vera’s eccentric artist and ruffian of a brother-in-law. He is hell-bent on protecting his family, and when they come underthreat a miscommunication forces him to dive into the world of the supernatural. Despite being little more than a human, he takes on the mantel of Foxkey to try to help save Murkwood.

Ezekiel Graves is an experienced Walker, gunslinger, and demon hunter. He is summoned to Murkwood by the mysterious Call, a wordless pull of magic that draws him toward evil. Through trials and the mysterious death of Murkwood's sheriff, he takes on the mantel of sheriff, and he must find out what is going on in Murkwood.

 With the help of his animal familiars, Ezekiel vows to protect Murkwood from its unknown threat. The only thing standing in his way is an ignorant and handsome new Foxkey by the name of Felix Fowley.

Clara Hawkins, a supposed associate of Vera’s late father and local resident of Murkwood, takes Vera and her family in after his untimely demise. Cloaked in mystery, she is not what she seems, but Vera cannot help but be drawn toward her.

Together, they must help Vera face the demons of her past to discover the power within.

These chronicles contain graphic themes of violence and child endangerment. Listener discretion is advised.

Why, Mateo Vigil, standing as he was in the middle of plowed row upon plowed row, knew this better than anyone. 

One could get lost in the fields. Head inside in the morning and come out somewhere near dusk with neary an idea of where time had gone. That’s how Mateo liked it. He thrived in the fields, and the fields thrived through him. Not once since he’d become the field foreman had he lost a yield, and not once had his plants failed him.

This wasn’t a normal rain, no, it burnt against the skin, stinging and leaving behind tracks of red in its wake.

 The sky above was the dark purple of a bruise, with traces of green on the horizon that hinted at something more to come. The ground was a soggy mass of mud. Speckled throughout were the barely there whispers of green leaves that were quickly turning to nothing but more brown muck as the sky spilled down its poison, staining the earth.

It takes some effort, but finally Clara agrees, and the two of them journey to the cemetary.

]]> The season two premiere of the Foxkey Chronicles: What Hides Beneath. Vera Fowley wakes up after the horrific occurrences of the night before. She makes her way out into the kitchen, with her daughter Eliza on her hip, and there she sees Clara Hawkins. Clara has a handcuff on her wrist and is struggling to get it off with a saw. After making breakfast, Vera proposes that in exchange for leading her to the cemetery, and her father's grave, she will remove the handcuff. It takes some effort, but finally Clara agrees, and the two of them journey to the cemetary.

It was no different here, in the barely tamed wild outside the woodlands of Jasper County. Here, the trees were so dense, and their crowns were so thick that the air seemed to come from a place unknown, created by the trees themselves. Here, the sky shone blue, the ground glistened with green, and the forest animals seemed scarce and far between. Here was a world all its own. It was enough to make an individual feel...at home.

It roared with a power stronger than any fire Vera had seen in her life as if fed by some unnatural source. Why, the flames seemed otherworldly. Violet ribbons chased and leaped from flame tip to flame tip, snapping and caressing the yellow firelight in a way that had Vera questioning her own sight. 

Such a fire should have had the whole town burning, but somehow, unbelievably the flames did not leap from house to house. Yet still, the fire claimed. It claimed just as was its purpose.

The fire bloomed high into the night, eating rafters, wood, and everything that hid between those four walls. It roared with a power stronger than any fire Vera had seen in her life as if fed by some unnatural source. Why, the flames seemed otherworldly. Violet ribbons chased and leaped from flame tip to flame tip, snapping and caressing the yellow firelight in a way that had Vera questioning her own sight. 

Such a fire should have had the whole town burning, but somehow, unbelievably the flames did not leap from house to house. Yet still, the fire claimed. It claimed just as was its purpose.

Dirt-covered and grief-stricken, It came as no surprise how easily the Fowleys mixed into the crowd. Why, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think they, too, had been through hell.
