Kevin Vance: A Journey from Navy SEAL to Actor and Advocate - Episode 94

Today my guest is, Kevin Vance. Kevin is a US military veteran, surrounded by artists in his youth, who went on to become a Navy SEAL and later a writer and actor. Known for his works in End of Watch and Fury.

Kevin began his career in the Navy in the US Spec Ops community as a Navy SEAL deploying to various parts of the globe. After leaving his Navy command, he ventured into foreign affairs as a consultant for 8 years where he deployed to combat zones and unstable regions. With a diverse background as a Corpsman, SEAL, Firefighter, and Rescue Specialist, Kevin channels the depth of experiences to bring authenticity into his work as a writer and actor.

Kevin is very passionate about supporting veterans and active military members' awareness to the veterans about the veteran community. One of the many topics that we chat about in this podcast. So I mean, there's not much to say other than Kevin is an extraordinary man and embodies how healthy masculinity shows up in this world. Rabbi Mordecai Finley - How jiu-jitsu, marines, Kabbalah are all connected - Episode 92

Rabbi Finley was born and raised in Southern California. After high school, he served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1976. He then spent a year in Israel on a kibbutz. After his stay in Israel, he attended the School of Religion at USC and completed his BA in 1980.

Rabbi Finley went to rabbinical school at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion. He completed his MA in Hebrew Letters in 1983. From there, he took a break from his rabbinic studies to work on his doctorate at the USC School of Religion. He received his rabbinical ordination in 1990 and his Ph. D. in 1992.

Rabbi Mordecai Finley is the rabbi and co-CEO of Ohr HaTorah Synagogue. He co-founded the synagogue with his wife Meirav Finley in 1993.

Rabbi Finley has been a guest on some of my favorite podcasts, like the Aubrey Marcus podcast and the Rich Roll podcast. And today he's on this podcast. Rabbi Mordecai Finlay is here with us today. We talk about his practice of jiu-jitsu, which he is a blackbelt in, his work with author Steven Pressfield and his work in the human condition through teaching the Bible, mysticism, Kabbalah, and spirituality. Jordan now works with teams and individuals who are ready to go to the next level of performance & become purpose-driven through the use of deep embodiment work, and high-performance coaching.

I by far, like, been amazed and my mouth drops to the floor every time I see one of Jordan's videos. They are super creative, his hustle is real, and it seems like he's putting on multiple videos a day. It's true social media hustle!

Now, this podcast is not about that, but more about the content and messages that Jordan shares with the world. Eli Schwebel is a Brooklyn Based Recording Artist & Producer with Jewish Music running through his Veins. Eli spearheaded the renaissance of Jewish Acappella music, as well as creating a vocally rich, pop-rock sound that transformed the definition of traditional Jewish music. He launched his solo career with his album, “Hearts Mind”, which has been called "groundbreaking" in its genre.

Eli has performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto, The Jerusalem Theater, Universal Studios in Hollywood, Joe's Pub, and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. He has co-headlined with Mordechai Ben David, Avraham Fried, Matisyahu, Yaakov Shwekey, Yonatan Razel, 8th Day, Lipa Schmeltzer, Benny Friedman, Abie Rotenberg, Rivie Schwebel, Neshama Carlebach, Elly Kranzler and has joined D'veykus and The Rabbis Sons a substitute member.

Many of my podcasts are with people I came across by reading their books or listening to their talks on social media. These are people that I admire, look up to, or have inspired me in some way or another. In this podcast, I have all that, plus the guest is a good friend of mine. Today I am joined by the one and only, Eli Schwebel. Avremi Gourarie - Learning From Life's Greatest Teacher, Pain - Episode 89

Avremi Gourarie is a prolific music publisher behind so much of the Jewish world's music. In this episode, we discuss with him the life of his daughter Yocheved, her struggle with an eating disorder, depression, and her heartbreaking recent death.

On December 22, 2020, Avremi's daughter Yocheved took her own life. Yocheved was a kind and thoughtful person. She was a top student and was in the process of applying to Ph.D. nursing programs. Posthumously, the family learned that she was accepted at Columbia University in their DNP program and on track to becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Unfortunately, her battle with mental illness raged, and she succumbed to it, not having fulfilled her dreams.

This conversation is powerful and it gives me a lot of hope. Avremi is honest and authentic, and he doesn't hold back. The episode is intense and emotional and it's a very much-needed conversation that can be taboo in many circles. On that note, if you are struggling and/or know someone who is struggling never hesitate to reach out and check in with your friend, family, and/or neighbor.

Bryan served on the Executive Committee of the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment in Los Angeles and has worked on projects featuring world-renowned luminaries like Eckhart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Rev Michael Beckwith, Don Miguel Ruiz, and many others.

His blogs are regularly featured on The Good Men Project, Raw Attraction Magazine, Sexy Conscious Awake, Elephant Journal, and others. He's the author of two books on relationships and spirituality, including “The Sex, Flirting, Dating, Hunting and Hoping Diet” and "Tell The Truth, Let The Peace Fall Where It May."

I actually came across Bryan's on the Instagram Explorer page. This conversation provided potent insight into the ‘why’ behind the relational dynamics we’ve all struggled with and why men so often struggle to enjoy life. And today that awesome is, Sarah Kubric. A.k.a. "The Millennial Therapist", on social media with over 1.4 million followers on Instagram where she shares all about the human condition.

Within the last year, Sara has been featured in various media sources, such as Oprah Daily, Grazia, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Conde Nast Travel, Women’s Health, The Guardian, Tatler, Buzzfeed, YahooNews, WELT, ABC News (USA), and Global News (Canada).

Sara was born in Yugoslavia and raised in Canada. She received her undergraduate degree in B.Sc. in Psychology from Burman University and she has a M.A. in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University. She is an existential psychotherapist and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Sigmund Freud University in Vienna in psychotherapy sciences. But more than that, she's just an amazing person, grounded down to earth, and has a way of sharing ideas that are easily digestible and practical to integrate into our day-to-day lives. Fally Klein - Plant Medicine, Breathwork and Other Healing Modalities - Episode 86

After walking through a diagnosis and recovering from cancer as a teenager Fally Klein was introduced to the concept of energy and the power of the subconscious. Fally learned to navigate the emotions and stigma that came from having cancer at such a young age and what she learned from it as a result. Fally experienced a miraculous healing that she believes set her on a path that she was destined to travel.

I had so much fun recording this podcast because it went to places I didn't expect and surprised me with new insights and perspectives that I never really thought of. We talk about a whole lot from spirituality, plant medicine, breathwork, the healing journey, different modalities, and much, much more. Judah Mischel - A Path Toward Greater Self-Actualization - Episode 85

Judah Mischel is the Executive Director of Camp HASC, the Jewish community’s premier summer program for individuals with special needs, and is the newly appointed Mashpiah of OU-NCSY.

Prior to assuming a full-time role at Camp HASC, Rav Judah was a Maggid Shiur & Director of Programing at Yeshivat Reishit in Beit Shemesh. A talmid of Yeshivat Shaalvim, he received Semicha from the Jerusalem Rabbinate, a BA in History from Yeshiva University, an MA in Education from YU’s Azrieli Graduate School, and was a Graduate Fellow at the CUNY Center for Coexistence at the School for Public Affairs. Rav Judah was Director of Student Activities and a member of the Judaic Studies faculty at the Frisch School, in Paramus, NJ, and led Aish HaTorah Jerusalem’s Return & Learn Program.

I admire Judah so much. I mean, besides all the Holy Work he's been doing with Camp HASC for years, he brings so much joy, comfort, and love to individuals with special needs and their families. Judah most recently wrote a new book, Baderech: Along the Path of Teshuvah, which I have been reading over the past year.

The book has brought me so much insight and wisdom and has been warming my soul towards the return to my higher self with so many beautiful stories and antidotes and teachings that he brings in so beautiful, yet digestible.

On the show we really delve into beautiful, deep, and raw topics around trust, returning to our higher selves, that path, that struggle, that journey. It's a wonderful, authentic conversation and I do hope you. Enjoy

Abie Rotenberg - Creative Process, Exclusive Content, and Using your Gifts for Good - Episode 84

Abie Rotenberg is a prolific Orthodox Jewish musician, composer, and singer. He's been producing music since the mid-1970s. Abie grew up in Queens, New York, surrounded by other up-and-coming religious Jewish musicians. He studied the piano and even taught himself guitar at a young age. Known for his folk-inspired music Abie has collaborated with other Jewish musicians including Mordechai ben David, Avraham Fried, Yehuda Schechter, Yaakov Shwekey, Baruch Levine, Moshe Yess, and Shlomo Simcha with whom he co-starred in Israel National Radio's Miracles 18 concert.

I recently was able to produce and direct, "Journey At Sea" a song from Abie and Lev Tahor's new album, Journey's Five. It was such an honor and a privilege to bring that story to life.

Rabbi Chaim Miller - Innovating Within Tradition - Episode 83

Rabbi Chaim Miller was educated at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in London, England, and studied Medical Science at Leeds University. At the age of twenty-one, he first began to explore his Jewish roots in full-time Torah study. Less than a decade later, he published the best-selling Kol Menachem Chumash—Gutnick Edition, which made over a thousand complex discourses of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe easily accessible to the layman. His 2011 compilation, the Lifestyle Books Torah, Five Books of Moses—Slager Edition was distributed to thousands of servicemen and women in the U.S. Army. In 2013, he was chosen by the Jewish Press as one of sixty “Movers and Shakers” in the Jewish world. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife Chani and seven children.

I sincerely enjoyed my conversation with Rabbi Chaim. We covered so many beautiful points and so many lessons came forth from our conversation together. We delve into one of the greatest self-help books of all time, the Tanya we talked about the law of charity and astrology. There's even a brief reading of my chart in this podcast. Lazer Brody - Beyond The Brain - Episode 82

Rabbi Lazer Brody was born in Washington, D.C. in 1949. After receiving his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland in 1970, he moved to Israel and joined the Israel Defense Forces regular army, and served in one of the elite special-forces units. He is a decorated combat veteran of two wars and dozens of counter-insurgency and anti-terrorist missions on both sides of Israel's borders. After surviving a near-suicidal mission to Beirut during the Israel-Lebanon conflict of 1982, Brody could no longer ignore the hand of G-d in his life. He became a baal-tshuva and left his mountaintop farm to study Torah in Jerusalem. Nine years of intensive Talmudic, ethics, and legal studies, led to his rabbinical ordination in 1992. He devoted another two years of postgraduate study to personal and family counseling and subsequently spent two years as rabbi and spiritual rehabilitation director of a major Israeli prison. There, he created a highly successful program of spiritual rehabilitation for prisoners based on Tshuva. In 1996, Brody moved to Ashdod and became the understudy of the famed Melitzer Rebbe, a contemporary giant in rabbinical law and personal counseling. Today, Lazer Brody dedicates his time to Jewish Outreach, and particularly to spreading the teachings of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev around the globe.

Roman Buchatsky - Make Your Dreams A Reality - Episode 78

Roman Buchatsky is an Israeli director, artistic designer, producer, and video editor. He gained popularity and became widely acclaimed for his video productions for Israeli artists, and for his impact on the Israeli music video industry. Romans's most outstanding web works is the "I'm Jewish and You Know It" music video, which was released in 2011 and is a parody of the song "I'm Sexy and I Know It" by the rappers duo LMFAO. The clip reached over 16,000,000 views on YouTube. Some of the prominent artists who collaborate with Roman are: Static and Ben-El Tavori, Ivri Lider, EZand Eliad Nahum.

For Directing and producing the video clip "Traveling" (Nossea in Hebrew) by singer Eliad Nahum, Buchatsky was awarded prizes at three international festivals in September 2016:

The NYC Indie Film Awards
Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival
WorldFest-Houston International Film & Video Festival

He was also nominated for the 2017 Best Video Clip Award at the Canadian International Film Festival: Toronto Independent Film Award

Today I have someone who I really wanted to have on the podcast for some time now, and we finally made it happen. Let me introduce Modi.

Modi's been voted one of the top ten comedians in New York City by The Hollywood Reporter. Modi is one of the comedy circuit's most sought-after performers. Modi has been featured on HBO, CBS, NBC, ABC, Comedy Central, Howard Stern Entertainment. The list goes on and on.

Born in Israel, MODI moved to the United States at the age of seven. After attending college at Boston University, MODI worked as an investment banker and had no plans to become a stand-up comedian until one open mic night changed everything.

MODI has appeared in several feature films and played leading roles in two: Waiting for Woody Allen, which won the LA Film Festival, and Stand Up, a feature-length film. According to Variety, MODI delivers a “naturally funny performance with a tremendous amount of energy on screen.”

A regular performer at the New York and Los Angeles comedy clubs, MODI also headlines around the country and across the globe. He has toured in the United Kingdom, Holland, and Israel and performs in comedy festivals and special venues, including Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

I came across Rabbi Doniel's work during the lockdown, and he was speaking with Eli Nash. It was an incredible conversation that got to deep dive and see what he was up to and his teachings. Though he's pulling from deep, deep Kabbalistic Hasidic teachers from over the past hundreds of years, he finds a way to bring it down in a simple manner in which I could understand.

I have to say, it's quite incredible!

I personally am a big fan of meditation and mindfulness, and he really ties in our own Jewish heritage and mindfulness teachings. In the last 10 minutes of this podcast episode, Rabbi Doniel and I join in meditation together, which you can all join along and practice anytime you'd like to listen. I found that to be quite special!

Tamir Goodman - Not Letting Others Define Your Success - Episode 69

Dubbed “The Jewish Jordan” by Sports Illustrated in 1999, Tamir Goodman is a former professional basketball player and current successful entrepreneur, coach, educator, and motivational speaker. Tamir was ranked the 25th best high school player in the country. He gained national attention after averaging over 35 points per game his junior year, all while remaining faithful to his Orthodox Jewish upbringing. Tamir was named MVP of the prestigious “Capital Classic All-Star Game,” an award won by Shaquille O’Neal, Lebron James, and other stars. Tamir then made history as the first Jewish basketball player to play D-I college and professional basketball without playing on the Jewish Sabbath. Tamir has been featured on 60 Minutes, ESPN, CNN, Fox, and many others. He was covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and in media sources across the United States, Israel, and around the world.

In 2002, Tamir fulfilled his dream of moving to Israel when he was signed by top Israeli and European League basketball team, Maccabi Tel Aviv. Former NBA Coach, David Blatt, was the team’s coach at the time. In 2004, Tamir took a break from playing basketball to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) where he was awarded “Most Outstanding Soldier.”

After a seven-year-long basketball-playing career for some of the best Israeli teams including Maccabi Haifa and Givat Shmuel, Tamir retired from professional basketball in 2009 after suffering career-ending injuries. Tamir currently runs a world-class summer overnight basketball camp in Jerusalem for players from around the world; leading sports-based programming for trips, schools, and organizations.

He is the published author of “The Jewish Jordan’s Triple Threat,” an international motivational speaker, and a sports and business consultant. Tamir holds a B.A. in communications and lives in Jerusalem with his wife and five kids.

Ross Szabo - A Deep Dive into Mental Health and Anxiety - Episode 68

Ross Szabo is the Wellness Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA. He is a mental health speaker and the CEO of Human Power Project. Ross was the Director of Outreach for the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign from 2002-2010. In that time, Szabo helped create the first nationwide youth mental health speakers' bureau in the country, called the Heard, which was later acquired by Active Minds. He spoke to over one million young people and reached millions in media appearances. Szabo was awarded the 2010 Didi Hirsch Erasing the Stigma Leadership Award and had his work entered into the Congressional Record by Congressman Patrick Kennedy.

Ross is known for being one of the most sought-after mental health speakers in the country, co-authoring Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of Your Mental Health - A Guide for Young Adults. and creating a mental health curriculum also titled Behind Happy Faces. The curriculum is being used by over 200,000 students across the country. Behind Happy Faces, Mental Health Curriculum received the 2016 Excellence in Education Award from the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. Szabo's work at Geffen Academy at UCLA is to create a comprehensive mental health curriculum that follows the milestones of adolescent development for grades 6-12.

I actually came across Ross because we both share a common passion and project around, "a kid's book", I wrote about a kid's book about optimism. Ross wrote his kid's book about anxiety. It caught my eye and I just knew I wanted to speak to Ross. The more I delved into who Ross is and what he does, I was like, I need this guy on the podcast. This podcast is great for anyone who wants to know more about what exactly mental health is, how to spot it, tools for dealing with anxiety, and how to start a conversation with a loved one around mental health. We also going to touch on Ross's story which is truly, moving and quite powerful. It's amazing to see how far he's come through his own personal journey and the lessons learned along the way. Welcome, welcome back to the Great Day Podcast! Today I am joined by Elon Gold. Elon is a comedian and actor who has starred in FOX's 'Stacked' and NBC's 'In-Laws'. He has made ten appearances on 'The Tonight Show and had a recurring role on the hit show, 'Bones'. Elon was a writer/performer on ABC's 'The Dana Carvey Show' and has guest-starred on 'Frasier', 'The Mentalist', 'Chappelle's Show' among others.

His 1hour stand-up special on Netflix received wide acclaim from audiences and peers alike and is now available on Amazon Prime.

He recently made a stellar appearance on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” and can next be seen in season 3 of “Crashing” on HBO in which he plays his most challenging role yet…himself.

Now, this podcast is quite special because, there isn't just one episode, but there will be a part two to this podcast. We couldn't get everything in! Today Moishe Chanin returns to the podcast. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Moishe is an internationally certified Professional Life Coach, a trained and certified Addiction Recovery Coach, and Board member at Neshamos - an organization dedicated to creating a healthy inner life for youth in the community.

After spending 10 years working in finance and management, Moishe began to pursue his passion and found his purpose in coaching.

His experiences, which span the spectrum from his own recovery journey through supporting addiction clients to guiding individuals on their passionate career pathway, have given him a deep, hands-on appreciation for the combined power of human strength, and the value of aiming to accomplish high impact, achievable goals.

I am also joined by Avremi Zippel. A Utah homegrown rabbi, mental health advocate, and survivor of childhood sexual abuse. In 2019 he very publicly came forward about a decade of sexual abuse he endured at the hands of a childhood caretaker. He's believed to be the first orthodox rabbi in the world to do so. And since then he has taken a leadership role in combating sexual abuse in religious communities around the world and advocating for survivors. On today's episode, we talk about what healthy masculinity and vulnerability look like, and how to show up courageously as a man in this day and age. I do hope you enjoy this podcast episode.

Yaakov Shwekey - A Time for Music - Episode 65

Yaakov Shwekey was born in Jerusalem. In his early years, Shewkey lived in the Bayit VeGan neighborhood of Jerusalem,[2] but he eventually moved to Polanco, Mexico City, and attended Yeshiva Ateret Yosef. He later lived in Lakewood, NJ, and Brooklyn, NY, and attended Yeshiva of Brooklyn before moving to Long Branch, NJ.

Yaakov Shwekey stormed into the Jewish music scene in 2001 with his debut solo album, Shomati, soaring to the top of the charts To date, he has released 13 albums and 3 DVDs. His latest album is "We Are a Miracle" which was just released Shwekey has headlined numerous concerts, including 2 Ceasaria concerts 2 beacon concerts, and 3 HASC concerts among his many hits are Rachem Meheroh ma ma ma Vhi Sheomdoh as well as mama Rochel and many more

Today we have an amazing, interesting, talented, and creative artist with us and a man with a massive, massive soul, the one and only Yaakov Shwekey. Yaakov launched a solo career in 2001 with his debut album, Shomati. He rose quickly to Jewish musical fame. Over the years, he's grown in popularity through his hit singles and albums, but also through the kindness that he does. And he's not alone in this. His wife, Janine, co-founded a special children's center in New Jersey servicing over 1000 families with children with special needs. Yaakov and I delve deep into his personal journey, lessons learned along the way, and the meaning behind some of his most popular songs. I hope you enjoy!

The Very Interesting World of Matzo - Episode 64

In the 1890’s, Aron Streit and his wife, Nettie, left Europe and came to America. In 1916, Aron opened his first matzo factory. There, on Pitt Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Aron and his first partner Rabbi Weinberger made all their matzo by hand. In 1925, Aron and one of his sons opened up a modern bakery on Rivington Street. A few years later, Aron’s other son joined the business. With the family working together, the Streit matzo bakery prospered and Aron bought three adjoining buildings to handle the growing business.

In 2015, after nearly 100 years making matzo on Manhattan’s Lower Eastside, Streit’s moved to a new and modern bakery in New York. Technology may have changed but Streit’s traditions and dedication to quality have not. We want to ensure we will all be able to enjoy the same great-tasting matzo for centuries to come.

Family and religious values are not the only things that have remained constant at Streit’s. The matzo bakery is still a family business. Today, Aron’s granddaughters and great-grandsons run the company. Streit’s is the only family-owned and operated matzo company in America. While others have sold out to large corporations, we at Streit’s continue our family tradition of bringing you the best matzo and kosher food products for Passover and year-round.

Neshama has been a cornerstone of major Jewish music festivals across the U.S. and globally, performing in front of thousands at an interfaith peace summit in Mt. Fuji, Japan, at the gates of Auschwitz on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), and at countless concerts and gatherings for audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

As the first then-Orthodox woman of her generation to perform for a mixed-gender audience, Neshama is a strong advocate for religious pluralism and human rights. She has sparked public conversations with brave forays into the place of women in Judaism and today’s world.

Eli Beer - A Committed Resolve to Selfless Endeavors - Episode 57

Eli Beer was born in Israel. When he was seven he witnessed his first terror attack. This traumatic experience, coupled with his desire to help save people, encouraged him to become a volunteer medic. Eli has been involved in emergency medical first response in Israel since 1988. With 25 years of life-saving experience, he has responded to some of the worst civil, wartime, and terror-related incidents.

Eli currently serves as Founder and President of United Hatzalah; lecturer to health organizations worldwide on the importance of receiving medical care within the first few minutes of an incident through a network of volunteers; has expertise in creating cohesive and integrated responses to mass casualty incidents as well as terrorist attacks; is a pioneer in the field of GPS-based technology for medical responses; recipient of awards, including the 2010 Social Entrepreneur for Israel received by the Schwab Foundation, the 2011 Presidential Award for Volunteerism in Israel received by President Shimon Peres, and the 2012 Young Global Leader award. Married with 5 children and when not saving lives or guiding United Hatzalah, he manages the family real estate company, Beer Realty.

If you have any doubt about the power of one of a one person can do that, that will be put to rest through this conversation. You see, Eli shows us that with passion and a little chutzpah, we can be the change we want to see in the world. You can be that change. You can make a difference. James Sebastiano Jr. - Reconnecting with our Trueselves - Episode 51

After struggling with addictions and mental health issues, James decided to make a change. "Chasing The Present", (his film) documents the process, a journey of self-discovery that gave him the opportunity to question the nature of his suffering and ways to break free from his addictive patterns. Within the film, there are some incredible deep points about mindfulness and removing, "The I", the ego, and identifying where our pain comes from and how to release it from our lives.

In this podcast we talk and we chat about healing practical tips on how to become more self-aware and of course, presents. My producer mind goes on a little jumble and its own takes over for a bit, and we talk about the behind the scenes of the film and he and some covering some technical questions as to making of the documentary itself.

James is now dedicating his life to facilitating change, by way of healthy restaurants and yoga studios. He is also a qualified yoga teacher and currently studying psychology at the University of Colorado.

Dr. Edith Eva Eger - A Holocaust Survivor's Wisdom To Healing and Personal Freedom - Episode 50

Dr. Edith Eva Eger, is a native of Hungary, and when she was just a teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz. Her parents were sent to the gas chambers but Edith’s bravery kept her and her sister alive. Toward the end of the war Edith and other prisoners had been moved to Austria. On May 4, 1945 a young American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly amongst a number of dead bodies. He quickly summoned medical help and brought her back from the brink of death.

After the war Edith moved to Czechoslovakia where she met the man she would marry. In 1949 they moved to the United States. In 1969 she received her degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, El Paso. She then pursued her doctoral internship at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Dr. Eger is a prolific author and a member of several professional associations. She has a clinical practice in La Jolla, California and holds a faculty appointment at the University of California, San Diego. She has appeared on numerous television programs including CNN and the Oprah Winfrey Show; and was the primary subject of a holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television. She is frequently invited to speaking engagements throughout the United States and abroad.

Dr. Edith Eger. She's a Holocaust survivor, a psychologist, and in 2017 at the nearly 90 years old, she wrote her first book, The Choice, the book. When I was reading just a few pages and I knew by some miracle I needed to speak with this Lamp Lighter is courageous and inspiring woman. She then in twenty twenty came out with her second book, The Gift Twelve Lessons to Save Your Life and it's truly a gift to humanity. I read them both and I highly recommend that you give them a read.

Yoni Z is a Jewish-American recording artist, songwriter, dancer, actor, and an entertainer from Brooklyn, New York. He has been working as a musician since he was 15 years old. Experience gained from performing at weddings and other events for over a decade enabled him to begin touring in 2012. A Jewish music performer who has toured worldwide, Yoni’s versatility has since earned him the reputation among fans and critics as “the walking jukebox,” and his YouTube channel has amassed over 5.1 million views.

On July 26, 2018, Yoni released his self-titled debut album, consisting of 14 original songs. He was involved in the songwriting and production of all album tracks. Diverse in style, it has been dubbed a revolutionary album for Jewish music. The album was very well received - after selling out during the pre-order, the album immediately went into its second production. Yoni also released music videos for six of the album’s songs. Yoni is an international speaker who kicked off his career at the age of 15 years old. He's built himself quite a reputation with his ability to reach new heights vocally and creatively.

It is a pleasure to host this podcast buts it an even greater pleasure to host my friends on this podcast. This show took place in an actual recording studio and it truly is a completely different energy. On the podcast today Yoni and I talk about his breakthrough at the age of 15 and how he hopes that people of all faiths will turn to Jewish music for entertainment and guidance as he envisions a worldwide acceptance of his work.

Shalom Auslander - What Does G-D Have To Do With It? - Episode 46

I am really excited to bring you to today's guests actually since the moment I picked up his book, Foreskin Lament, last summer, I was stricken by this man's way of storytelling, his personal journey. As I began to learn more about him I found out there was a lot of which I related to him. We did grew up in similar backgrounds in Orthodox homes. And though his journey and specifics are very different from mine, there was a lot that I connected with and the way he expressed his feelings and his emotions.

Shalom Auslander is an American novelist and author and he has written many essays, short stories, and a few novels, most recently, Mother For Dinner. I just finished reading Mother For Dinner and it's a fantastic creative novel, a great story which has many, many layers to it. I highly recommend you reading it. Shalom's work has been described, "Dark Jewish humor, as masochistic and taboo possible."

On todays shows Shalom lets us delve into his process, what inspires him, his journey, his relationship with God, and several others of his releases. Shalom is a really real and raw human being, and it's really cool to have been shares to share space with him.

Matthew Silver is a performance artist in New York City who plays a "village idiot" character, acting as a "clown" and "trickster" in order to parody social norms. He has been in several viral videos in which he performs his antics. Matthews YouTube channel and the content he shares is about shifting the entire planet to love consciousness with sacred clowning. Matthew is a weird psychedelic sacred clown. He is known for his street performing art in New York City at Union Square, Washington Square Park, Astor Cube and Time Square. His two biggest videos are "Words of Wisdom by an Unexpected Citizen" and "Accept Yourself Love Yourself Vine". He has been on Adult Swim, MTV, and Netflix.

Before his performance art appeared online, Silver appeared in an experimental short film called "The Shadow Monster". The earliest recorded instances of his performance art online came on November 30th, 2011, in a video in which he wore a white dress and sang the Neil Diamond song "Sweet Caroline".

Peter Tuchman is a stock trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). He's known as the "most photographed trader on Wall Street". Peter trades at Quattro Securities, and has worked as a trader for 35 years. He found fame on the trading room floor as his dramatic facial expressions caught the eye of photographers looking for a photo opportunity that captured reactions to the rise and fall in stocks.

Peter embraced the fame and posted much of the praise for his comical and devastating reactions on his social media accounts, ramping up shares of his trading floor pictures as the coronavirus pandemic caused turmoil for the markets. Peter, who calls himself the 'Einstein of Wall Street', came down with the coronavirus in late March. He has since recovered, but the story he tells is that the corona virus is very serious business.

While shooting for Cheddar TV a few years back on the floor of The NYSE, I met Peter. Anyone who works on the floor of the NYSE or has seen it in person will tell you, IT'S INTENSE! However I remember the kindness Peter showed me and now that I have this amazing podcast there is no better reason to bring on The Great Day Podcast today.

Rabbi Mendel Kalmenson is the rabbi of Beit Baruch and executive director of Chabad of Belgravia, London, where he lives with his wife, Chana, and their children. Mendel was an editor at the Judaism Website, Chabad.org, and is also the author of the popular books Seeds of Wisdom, A Time to Heal, and Positivity Bias. In his book, Positivity Bias, Rabbi Mendel pushes that life is essentially good; and positive perception is applicable and accessible to all.

During these interesting times of the pandemic and socio-economic strife around the world, I couldn't think of bringing a better guest who has an amazing take on life itself. People around us are getting sick, the way we have connected with other humans, habits and routines we've always have known, for the past hundreds of years are changing at the drop of the hat.

Not only have I had the opportunity to read Jelani's work but I had the chance to work with him at a writers work shop. The workshop was based around his children's book, "A Kid's Book about Racism." I was very intrigued about the subject matter and what I learned in the workshop.

Jelani's work doesn't just take place in newspapers and on college campuses. Jelani's adopted children come from different backgrounds and his house has become outset for many of his unique takes.

Zelda Volkov - Wearing Wigs on Your Own Terms - Episode 36

Zelda Volkov, a Crown Heights native, used to wear a traditional sheitel. Zelda decision to start selling wigs was inspired by her own personal, traumatic experience with a short, bristly sheitel as a teenaged bride. Her transformation began with a trip to her mother’s sheitel-macher, or, “wig lady.” She walked into the shop as a woman with long, blonde hair, and walked out wearing the standard model: a dark bob with bangs.

However a backlash against the natural wig movement has been growing in the past 15 years. Stricter Orthodox camps worry that these lush, shiny hairpieces attract unwanted attention and undermine what they see as the purpose of the wig: a modest head covering. Zelda, and many other Jewish women around the globe, are speaking out in pursuit of a different approach to the practice.

Zelda has incredible energy, she's a powerful leader, and throughout this podcast we talk about stigma's around wearing wigs. I hope this episode will bring less shame to the ideas talked about on here and open up much needed conversations around the subject. Becca Siegel and Dan Gold - Half & Half Travel - Episode 35

Becca Siegel and Dan Gold are a couple who often adventure apart. To stay close even when they're not side by side, they launched the project Half Half Travel, a series in which the pair stitch two of their pictures into a charming hybrid. They created Half Half Travel to share some of the knowledge and experience that they have around travel and photography.

They first met in the winter of 2015 but just a few months after meeting, Gold received a job opportunity he just couldn't turn down. But it involved traveling 12 months out of the year. Becca is originally from New York but has also spent significant time overseas, so travel has been an integral part of their relationship from the beginning.

I met Becca over eight years ago while I was backpacking China. She recently launched a walking food tour in Chinatown here NYC. Becca and Dan, both love to travel and are talented with the camera. So while they put together this incredible brand and they have a wealth of information that they share through photos and articles on their website.

It's not easy to make new friends. But Rob Lawless is somewhat of an expert at it. He's on a mission to make 10000 friends. It'll take him over 10 years, but he's already made over 2500. Find out why he's so curious about human connections and what inspired him to make this his full time pursuit.

Rob Lawless is originally from Norristown, PA and graduated Penn State University with 2013. After graduation, he began a career with Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst in Strategy & Operations.

In November 11, 2015 Rob started this project to see if I could meet with people to chat for an hour for absolutely no reason. He immediately saw he was rejected way less, the responses were all positive and encouraging, and he was able to meet amazing people with incredible backgrounds who would all consider themselves normal.

When Rob was laid off on June 20, 2016, he started his journey, and since then, he has met over 3200 people (Meir was friend 3200) across 20+ cities in the U.S. & Canada, have driven across the United States 6 separate times and have been featured by some awesome press sources, including Ryan Seacrest, as well as “Your Morning,” a national Canadian morning show.

Of course before the show Rob and I took part in his 1 hour meeting. I am honored to say I am friend 3200 and very honored to bring you this show where we learn way more about Rob's background and his mission to learn about the lives of 10,000 people.

Through free programs that address the emotional, social, and financial needs of seriously ill children, their families, and communities, Chai Lifeline restores normalcy to family life, and better enables families to withstand the crises and challenges of serious pediatric illness.

My guest today, Rabbi Simcha Scholar is the vice president of Chai Lifeline. I had the privilege of being a counselor and Division Head in Camp Simcha, which is a summer program that offers children with cancer and chronic illnesses a chance to enjoy the joys of overnight camp and to be a kid again. What they do is incredible!

They have supported and help children who are battling cancer and chronic illnesses and their families to not just here in the U.S., but across the world. They're helping thousands and thousands of children and families taking on the most challenging time of their life.

Today we talk about the genesis of Chai Lifeline, what it takes to be a fearless leader and how one can step up for their community.

Chloé Valdary developed The Theory of Enchantment, an innovative framework for social emotional learning (SEL), character development, and interpersonal growth that uses pop culture as an educational tool in the classroom and beyond.

Chloé has trained around the world, including in South Africa, The Netherlands, Germany, and Israel. Her clients have included high school and college students, government agencies, business teams, and many more.

She has also lectured in universities across America, including Harvard and Georgetown. Her work has been covered in Psychology Today Magazine and her writings have appeared in the New York Times and the Wall St Journal.

On todays show Chloé and I talk about her curriculum, her startup called Theory of Enchantment, which teaches social and emotional learning for all ages. And, we jump into the current social climate that's taking place right now around social justice.

He’s also garnered millions of YouTube views with his unique viral videos. Mendy lives with his family in Los Angeles, CA.

In the midst of getting his career in entertainment off the ground, he found time to attend yeshiva and become an ordained Rabbi when he was 21 years old.

Mendy's work has helped to transform the face of Jewish entertainment and in the 2000's he partnered with J Brand founder Jeff Rudes to form Jewbellish, a comedy brand that embellishes Jewish culture.

I had a blast sitting down with Mendy in his home and chatting about comedy, Jewish entertainment, where it's all heading the challenges of being a performer dating. Nissim Black - Rapping bars to Wrapping Teffillin: A Spiritual Journey from Gangsta to Hassid. - Episode 27

Nissim Black has been a gangsta rapper, a gang member, and a faith seeker. But it is his current incarnation that is here to stay: an African American Hasidic Jew who brings sharp beats and hooked-filled rhymes to the masses.

Originally performing under the name D. Black, he released two albums, The Cause and Effect (2006) and Ali'yah (2009). He retired in 2011 to focus on his conversion to Orthodox Judaism, but returned in 2012 under his Hebrew name, Nissim, and began writing from a more religious standpoint. In 2013, his debut album, under his Hebrew name, self-titled Nissim.

After a long discovery process, both musically and personally, Nissim has finally found his true identity. “All of those journeys—being in a gang, being on the football team was a part of me trying to say, ‘I belong to something greater than myself, I know where, but I belong somewhere,'” he says. "It's almost like trying to find that home."

Nissim grew up a Muslim, he practiced Christianity and he now is converted to Judaism with his wife and moved his family to the Holy Land. Nissim is a super talented artist and performer, bringing an authentic, fresh sound to the Jewish music industry. We cover his journey from dealing drugs in the streets of Seattle to building a life and career in Israel. This show has got a lot of legs so please enjoy this episode with Nissim Black.

That’s 1300 Jews in a state 14 times larger than Israel.

With his Hasidic family--a wife and four adopted children--Chaim finds himself accepted, a local celebrity, in the cowboy land of “live and let live.” But he meets resistance from other Montana rabbis, Reform and Conservative. Chaim runs The Chabad Lubavitch Center for Jewish Life and Learning. A center that creates an atmosphere that welcomes diverse backgrounds and beliefs, and fosters an open and personal Jewish experience.

On today's show Chaim and I talk about the move he and his wife decision to move to Montana in the first place, the experience of adopting 5 children and the amazing work they are doing out in Big Sky Country.

Zvi Gluck was born to help others. At the age of 15, Zvi saw a need that was not being met. Children who had lost parents to cancer were not receiving the bereavement services they desperately needed. So, Zvi founded the National Cancer Bereavement Foundation to ensure that those vital services would be provided. Once larger, more established organizations saw the need and began addressing it themselves, Zvi stepped out because, it’s not about who gets the credit, it’s about whether those in crisis are getting the assistance they need. For 14 years, Zvi’s cellphone number has been on the speed dial of community leaders, rabonim, politicians and anyone involved in community support. His phone rings 24/7: arrests, overdoses, suicide, sexual abuse and diplomatic issues. I saw this even as we started this show!

A handful of community leaders recognized the value of Zvi’s work and saw that for every person Zvi assisted, dozens more benefited; when you help those in crisis, you also benefit their family, friends and community. These leaders realized that the issues facing our community are far too large for one man to combat. These issues must be addressed with a united front backed by an organizational structure and the resources necessary to respond quickly and properly. Amudim was formed to ensure that any Jew facing crisis is provided with the assistance and guidance he needs in the most professional, knowledgeable and caring manner.

Zvi's and Amudim's work is dedicated to serving community members in times of crisis. Founded on the pillars of kindness, compassion, and dignity, Amudim functions as a confidential resource center that provides meaningful assistance, enduring support, and direct referrals for individuals and families impacted by sexual abuse, neglect, and addiction, and other crisis-related matters.We foster change and growth, by raising awareness and implementing educational programs within community.

Shais Taub is an American Hasidic rabbi and author. He writes about Jewish mysticism and is also known for his work in the field of addiction recovery. Rabbi Shais Taub is a noted speaker, author, and columnist, who serves as scholar-in-residence of Chabad of the Five Towns.

Rabbi Taub is most known for is book, "God of Our Understanding: Jewish Spirituality and Recovery from Addiction" a frank and penetrating look at the underlying spiritual dynamics of addiction and its treatment through Twelve-Step programs. Rabbi Shais Taub, is a world renown expert in Jewish mysticism as well as a mentor to many thousands of addicts, draws from his unique background to thoroughly address many of the concerns raised by Jewish addicts in recovery while also using Jewish knowledge to enrich the understanding of the spiritual principles of recovery for addicts of all faiths.

After reading Rabbi Shais Taub book and my conversation with him you don't need to be Jewish or an addict to appreciate the wisdom one can find from his teachings. Rabbi Shais taub has a talent for storytelling, and he makes Jewish mysticism accessible and relevant to everybody.

Beatie Deutsch - Running on Faith - Episode 19

After having birthed 4 children in 6 years Beatie Deutsch thought she would pick up running in order to get in shape. She was inspired by her husband who recently rode a 180-miles on a bicycle for charity, so she decided she would run a marathon.

She trained four days a week for four months and placed SIXITH in the Tel Aviv Marathon! After such success in one race she decided to run again and now has competed in hundreds of races all around the world. Shes even raced at 7 months pregnant and finished 4 hours and 8 minutes and ran another marathon just a few months after giving birth!

SHES INCREDIBLE!

Although she had never thought about being a professional runner, Beatie realized she was meant to run and she is currently training for the 2020 Olympics.

Beatie is an Orthodox Jew. But for her, running isn’t separate from her religious beliefs, it’s sustained by it. Even when she trains, Beatie maintains her modest attire: her necklines cover her collarbone, her sleeves cover her elbows, and her skirts cover her knees. As a married woman, she always runs in a headscarf that covers her hair. She feels empowered by the idea that female athletes don’t have to expose their bodies to win championships.

Make Noise, Break Walls - Yaniv Hoffman aka Jeryko - Episode 17

Authenticity is a rare quality to find in the music world. Most mainstream labels prefer a polished and easy-to-sell artist to an honest and genuine one. This is especially true in Jewish music, where songs about uncomfortable truths and human frailties are often passed over in favor of bland, comforting platitudes.

Yaniv, (Jeryko), is a 28-year-old vocalist and guitarist performs an intimate, emotionally direct, autobiographical kind of folk rock that incorporates elements of soul, hip-hop and electronic dance music. His new, six-song EP, Human, traces his transition from single into married life with earnest dedication, including such titles as “Find You,” “Our Story” and “Friends."

Like most of my converations with Yaniv this podcast is deep and insightful. There are many layers to Yaniv and on this episode we get to take a part some of his music, his most recent wedding, (Baruch Hashem) and we were blessed with a few live performances. This conversation took place over Zoom and Instagram live so apologies for the quality.

Danny Finkelman is a producer, directer and founder of Sparks Next, a boutique production house, that produces, shoots and edits every project from start to finish and has worked with virtually every major artist in the Jewish music industry.

Sparks’ list of credits is long and varied and includes the ensemble video Unity for Justice, and The Japan Song. Sparks Next has also produced documentaries, commercials and numerous video presentations for non-profit organizations including RCCS, The Friendship Circle and many others. Finkelman is currently producing a global music video called WeR1, set to premiere in summer of 2016 and a concert starring Dudu Fisher and Gad El Baz at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

Yosel Tiefenbrun - Setting the Standard for New York Tailoring - Episode 6

Yosel Tiefenbrun was raised in London and comes from a long line of tailors, fabric merchants and artists. The love of fine clothes, design and exquisite workmanship runs in his blood and has been his passion from a young age. In Singapore he also began to pursue his love of design and clothing, studying design at NAFA while interning at Harpars Bazaar Magazine.

At the age of 21, Yosel moved to London to study at the Savile Row Academy, where he spent two years training in both cutting and tailoring.

Yosel moved to New York to open his own tailoring house, and at the age of 28, launched TIEFENBRUN in Williamsburg, New York.

TIEFENBRUN is a bespoke tailoring house located in Williamsburg, New York. They specialize in highest-quality handmade garments with a commitment to the finest craftsmanship and fabrics. They create everything from suits, coats and shirts to tuxedos and shooting jackets.

Yosel's work has been featured on GQ, TimeOut London, and Vice just to name a few. The man is is setting the standard for New York tailoring and I am lucky enough to call him one of my great friends.
