Swiping Right on Love After 50

Welcome back to another episode of The HIP Senior Podcast, where we dive into the deep end of life after 50, with a rubber duckie of humor for good measure. Our host, Marianne Bailey, is joined by Turner Grant, author of "To Venus and Back, One Man's Quest to Rediscover Love." If that title doesn't scream 'romantic escapade', we don't know what does. Turner's here to share his experiences with the wild world of online dating, a topic that Marianne, as a newly single woman, is keen to explore.

Turner's journey into the realm of online dating was less of a gentle nudge and more of a full-on cannonball dive. After two years of grieving the loss of his wife and focusing on his family, he was 'encouraged' (or, more accurately, catapulted) into the digital dating scene by his mother-in-law and a persuasive neighbor. The promise of online dating, with its easy access to potential partners, seemed enticing. However, Turner soon discovered that swiping for love was more like trying to find a needle in a haystack... a haystack full of left swipes.

Marianne and Turner also discussed the various dating apps available, with a particular focus on the ones that offer free services. Marianne, with her dreams of a romantic grocery store encounter thwarted by home delivery, is considering giving online dating a shot. However, she's quickly learning that while setting up a profile might be easy, finding a genuine connection is a whole different ball game.

The conversation took a turn towards the effectiveness of different dating apps for the 50 and above demographic. Bumble and Match, once the reigning champions, seem to have lost their luster. But fear not, because Tinder, the rebel of the dating app world, might just be the place for those of us with a few more miles on the clock. Josh and Bobs Heartwarming Journey

Josh Pettit's family has a heartwarming story of lifelong love and companionship. Bob and Betty, high school sweethearts from Buffalo, New York, met as fifth-graders and began dating in 1955. Betty became a devoted stay-at-home mom to their three sons, with Josh being the youngest, while Bob worked as a civil engineer.

After Bob's retirement, the couple decided to travel around the country and live the RV life, finally enjoying the warm sunshine in Florida. But Betty's health soon took a turn for the worse. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery, followed by the discovery of kidney cancer, which required the removal of one-third of her kidneys. She also had a hip replacement and a few other medical procedures, which Josh believes may have sped up the onset of her Alzheimer's disease.

To ensure that Betty receives consistent medical care, Bob and Betty moved in with their youngest son Josh in North Carolina. It was a big change for the family, but they knew it was the right decision. Over time, they began to notice Betty's memory loss, a hallmark symptom of Alzheimer's disease. The family came together to provide the best care possible for Betty, with Josh taking on an increasingly important role in her daily care.

In this podcast, Josh shares with us the journey of caring for his mother Betty, including the challenges and joys of having his parents living with him, and how they manage to provide daily care for Betty. Saving Money With Your Smartphone

It seems like everything we purchase these days has dramatically increased in cost. We are all feeling it. How do we save money? Many of us have reassessed what we are spending our money on. We aren't buying what we don't absolutely need. Some people spend $6 a day on a cup of Joe at Starbucks (that same cup used to cost $5!) That's $2190 a year! That's a weekend vacation!

Did you know, though, that you could save money with apps designed to help you do so on your smartphone? There are all kinds of apps out there including these:

Dosh

Ibotta

Coupons.com

Rakuten

RetailMeNot

CapitalOne

Zelle

and more!

Most of these apps work with Android and iOS phones alike. If for some reason you can not find them in the app store, check the spelling.

In this podcast, I help you understand why you should take a look at some of these apps and why you should do some research and figure out which ones will help you save the most money. This can vary depending on whether you shop in-store vs. online. Just be open-minded and don't give up if one app doesn't fit your lifestyle or needs. Just try a different one!

10,000 people become seniors daily. Being a senior can be exciting! But it can also be frustrating, both as a senior and as their family members, and caregivers. Every stage in life has a learning curve and even becoming a senior does as well. There is always something new to be learned.

Today on our podcast is dementia specialist Teepa Snow, owner and founder of Positive Approach to Care. I heard about Teepa several years ago from my friend Theresa Youngstrom, owner and founder of A Better Approach to Memory Care. She had mentioned that Teepa had trained her.

One day, while scrolling through TikTok, I saw a video about dementia and how to handle a situation better with that person, and then discovered it was Teepa! I was quick to follow her and started watching her videos, knowing it would not only help a few of my senior friends but also some of my clients as they age.

Teepa and I discuss dementia, the relationship between patients/parents and their (grown) children, how TikTok/Social media has helped people learn about helping people with dementia, as well as how TikTok has helped her business.

May 18, St Robert Plaza, Mo stayed at a Hilton drive 7.5 hours

May 19, Drive to Panera, Texas, and stayed at a Hilton. Stopped at a restaurant in Tulsa, The Vault.

May 20, Sierra Grande Resort, stayed 3 nights. Had massages and hot mineral baths. Located in Truth or Consequences, NM. Great restaurant, I had Steak & Scampi. Los Arcos Steak and Lobster House. There is another restaurant we ate at twice, take out only, Pacific Grill. Great seafood.

June 23, stopped to visit a close friend in Tuscon, AZ and she had a great lunch prepared for us. Stayed about 3 hours and then went to Scottsdale, a 2-hour drive, and checked into the Sheraton Desert Oasis Villas. R stayed three weeks and visited our Kids and grandkids, not every day so there was no pressure to see them or to see us.

I golfed 5 times with friends.

Spent two days in Prescott to visit our cousin and ate at a Historic Hotel with an awesome restaurant downtown.

We went and met our daughter at the MIM, Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, this is amazing.

We left on June 13, Palm Springs, and spent two nights and I played golf.

June 15, Arrived in San Luis Obispo and stayed at a Hilton, checked in, and met my cousin at Windows on the Water, an elegant restaurant. This is in Morrow, Ca.

June 16, drive along Rte 1 to go through Big Sur and Carmel, CA. One of the most beautiful sceneries you have. The traffic was slow going through Ventura but otherwise, it was sporadic.

June 17, checked into our AB&B in Petaluma, CA. It was a beautiful apartment with a private entrance and a small kitchen. Saved a lot of money not staying in a hotel.

June 18, Then we walked every morning for almost a week around a Nature Preserve.

Our son lives in Petaluma and we saw him this day.

June 19, Lands End Art Museum in San Francisco, a beautiful art museum. It was a mile to walk along the trail to the Lands End and the Bay was beautiful. After the museum, we went to a Korean restaurant about a 1.5-mile drive.

June 20, Incorrect Museum in Napa Valley.

"The Incorrect Museum: Vignettes from the di Rosa Collection" and "Ceramic Interventions: Nicki Green, Sahar Khoury, & Maria Paz" are di Rosa’s first major exhibitions, after an eventful couple of years marked by wildfires, changes in leadership and, of course, the pandemic shutdown of 2020.
