In a word: calling. Too often, calling is misunderstood as something reserved for a select few, typically in vocational ministry. But Jesus' invitation is for everyone. The difference between those two realities is what we have called The Sacred Gap and once that gap becomes clear, so does an obvious question: "How do I get through that gap?" In this episode, we continue our discussion of mercy as the central ethic of Kingdom living by sharing a story of apprenticeship. It is very good to learn from Jesus and catch his breathtaking vision for Kingdom life. Where it really matters and where his vision is realized, though, is not in knowing about it but in living it. Which is why story is so important. It is in our stories that we experience for ourselves and with each other just how beautiful and hopeful Kingdom life actually is. And it is through our stories that we find inspiration spurring one another on to love, kindness, and good works.

Listen in as Aric invites his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, to share her story of how God prepared her heart for an adventure through a very simple act of kindness to the overlooked and ignored homeless population in her community. This is a teaching that takes us to the inescapable need for forgiveness as "The Way" to restoring right relationships. Forgiveness may not be so difficult when the offenses are minor.

The more we understand Jesus' invitation for the Kingdom life, the more compelling it is. Listen in as Tyler and Aric continue to explore Jesus' compelling vision for Kingdom life through his opening words of his Sermon on the Mount. As we discussed in our previous series, he offers a promise of healing and transformation that frees us from our shadow stories into lives lived more and more fully in the true story and the Kingdom realities that you are loved, you belong, you are chosen, and you have nothing to prove. The difference between those two realities is what we have called The Sacred Gap and once that gap becomes clear, so does an obvious question: "How do I get through that gap?" Well, it turns out there is an answer. The early Kingdom communities of Jesus' apprentices, not coincidentally, referred to themselves as practitioners of "The Way." What "Way" is that? It is "The Way" that Jesus himself taught in the greatest and most compelling sermon ever given.

In this podcast, we look at Jesus' next surprising revelation of "The Way." In the first three "blessed are" statements, Jesus has taken us on a journey within. As apprentices of Jesus, we learn with him the art and skill of paying attention to our inner worlds. We learn to listen to our hearts and discern God's invitations for growth and healing that our hearts reveal...healing our perception and relationship with God as well as healing our perception of ourselves. Now Jesus turns outward. He speaks to our deep desires for meaningful and fulfilling relationships and for our longings for life to be good...for things to be made right. He speaks to the desire and offers an amazing promise: satisfaction. It is an incredibly lofty and hopeful promise. So we shouldn't be surprised, then, that with such a promise, it is also hard. The road is getting more narrow but the promises are also getting more profound. "Right relationship" is something we can experience. But we cannot get around the need for forgiveness as "The Way" to that promise. Forgiveness is hard. And it is made even more difficult because there is so much misunderstanding and confusion around it.

Listen in as Tyler and Aric explore this difficult and often misunderstood topic, Jesus' sobering teachings about it, and why it is so important...and essential to the Kingdom promise of satisfaction.

To learn more about The Intentional Dad or to contact us, go to www.theintentionaldad.org.

Hosted on Acast. In Jesus' invitation to grieve with him, he offers a promise of comfort...comfort that is a first taste of the healing we all need. It is the start of a lifelong process of healing that takes us into the "training circle" with Jesus to unlearn the life of self-rescue and re-learn life as a fathered son or fathered daughter. A power that flies in the face of our conventional wisdom and understanding of power and authority. It is a strength that can only come from deep within...a strength that, as Jesus teaches, is found only in those who have learned what it is to be unimportant and, at the same time, be more than okay.

Listen in as Aric and Pete conclude the series What Story Are You Living?

We have come a long way and in this final discussion, we build on the idea of divine rebellion. As we have discussed, the experience of the true story is something that is very opposed. Which means we have to learn to fight an enemy who is relentlessly on the prowl to steal, kill, and destroy and keep us stuck in our shadow stories. Resistance, then, is essential in this journey of healing and transformation. However, as good as it is to learn to resist, there is one more idea that actually opens the door to taking the fight to our enemy...to launch an offensive in the fight for our hearts and the promise of living out of the true story. Let's get to know our enemy even more as we look at how he seizes on key moments of vulnerability in our lives to tailor his lies to our story. He does this through messages that paint a skewed picture of reality that feels very very real, and he leverages those messages to get what he ultimately wants...agreement with him. We can do so much more than resist. The good news about agreements is that, because of Jesus, they can be broken. In this hopeful finale, Pete and Aric share their own experiences in how to turn the tables and take the fight to our enemy.

Contact Aric and learn more about The Intentional Dad at www.theintentionaldad.org

Learn more about True Pursuit or contact Pete at www.truepursuit.org

Hosted on Acast.

Join Aric as he invites you into so much more than a resolution at the dawn of 2023...a pursuit of something much deeper and more profound: a revolution. Listen to the first podcast of 2023 to learn more and then bring your family along for the adventure as we share stories of apprenticeship with Jesus together.

In this episode, Aric casts a vision for the New Year and invites you and your family into a year of transformational growth; a journey shared through stories of life with Jesus. We kick off the 2023 Revolution with a story from Aric's brother Tyler and how God fathered him through a difficult day with his then 2.5 year old son...circumstances that brought him face to face with the difficult truth of limitations which led to a powerful moment of growth and transformation for him as a father.

Ready to join the discussion? Consider becoming a paid member of The Intentional Dad community. Swordsman level memberships and above gain access to Discord, a platform we use for ongoing private conversation. If you have questions or things you would like to explore further, you can access Discord and a thread titled "I have questions." There will also be other threads for you to engage with other men and families on a journey to embrace and fulfill the promise of fatherhood. We would be honored to have you connect with us that way.

Disclaimer: The story Tyler has to share is about an injury to his young son. It is necessary for him to give details of the injury in order to tell the whole story.

Listen in as Aric and Mary Jo continue their discussion of the holidays, the hopes we have, and things that work against us. Can intentionality help us capture all the goodness we long for in the holiday season? It is a question they began to explore together with the goal of thinking about some simple ways to move away from what might rob us of the promise of a new holiday season and toward things that can help capture the goodness we long for. Aric and Mary Jo continue to share their plans for being intentional this season and invite you to try it for your family as well. Even better, is the invitation to share your stories with others of what God is doing through the intentionality with your family.
