He is a multi award winning and hugely influential hero to many musical actors – ourselves included – and has graced stage and screen for nearly 5 decades. During this time he has won Mo Awards, Helpmann Awards, three Olivier Awards and was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in 2022 for significant services to the arts. Most musical fans first heard of him when he played Javert in the 10th Anniversary concert and ever since then, seeing his name on a cast list is enough to make any theatre fan go weak at the knees!

He won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in the gender-swapped production of Company in 2021 and also won an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk award for the same role. He is currently working on and helping develop a biographical musical about Frank Sinatra in which he plays the title role called Sinatra: the Musical.

He is a popular Twitch streamer and has written a hugely popular internet comic called Dents with childhood friend, actress Beth Behrs.

He lives in New Jersey with his fiancé Max Clayton, who is also an actor.

Norm is known primarily for being the first black actor to play the Phantom on Broadway and for playing Inspector Javert in the 25th anniversary Les Miz concert but he’s done way way more than just those two roles, including screen appearances in Scandal, Law and Order, Blue Bloods, Sex and the City, Da 5 Bloods, Gotham and leading theatre roles in Sweeney Todd, Jesus Christ Superstar, Ragtime, Tommy, Side Show, The Wild Party, The Little Mermaid and Porgy and Bess for which he received a Tony nomination!


Apologies for the slightly annoying background noises (ie the humming noise and the clicks) but it was a hot day in New York and Norm had his aircon on during the recording session...Soz.

Kerry has had a very successful award winning career in musical theatre with leading roles in West End shows My Fair Lady, Oliver!, Cats, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Chess, The War of the Worlds, Rent, and more.  She was the first British actress to play the role of Elphaba in Wicked and created the role of Meat in the original London cast of We Will Rock You where she first met legendary Queen guitarist Brian May - with whom she has collaborated many times. She is also a published author and has released four solo albums with a 5th scheduled for realease in 2025.

Kerry has had a very successful award winning career in musical theatre with leading roles in West End shows My Fair Lady, Oliver!, Cats, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Chess, The War of the Worlds, Rent, and more.  She was the first British actress to play the role of Elphaba in Wicked and created the role of Meat in the original London cast of We Will Rock You where she first met legendary Queen guitarist Brian May - with whom she has collaborated many times. She is also a published author and has released four solo albums with a 5th scheduled for realease in 2025.

Originally from Ireland, Olivier nominated Killian Donnelly has worked extensively in theatre playing leading roles in shows such as Kinky Boots (a show which gave him his Broadway debut in 2016), Billy Elliott, The Commitments, Memphis, Les Miserables, The Phantom the Opera and Fun Home.

He met Alistair when they worked together in the West End production of Les Miserables (subsequently working together on the Les Miz movie), and he first worked with John when he played Raoul opposite John's Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre. This was when the legendary and much missed viral online video series John vs Killian was born - in which John and Killian competed against each other in increasingly absurd challenges backstage.

He lives with his wife and two children in Dublin but is currently spending most of his time in London where he has returned to the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre.

She became an author after teaching for 15 years and has written over 20 novels (which are published in more than 50 countries and almost all of which made the Sunday Times Bestsellers list) as well as numerous novellas, video game scripts, short stories, opera libretti, screenplays, and a stage musical with composer Howard Goodall.

As well as championing trans rights, she is a passionate advocate for authors’ rights (she is currently the Chair of the Society of Authors and member of the Board of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society) and is a patron of charities Médecins Sans Frontières and Plan UK. She lives in Almondbury, Yorkshire with her husband Kevin, where she writes all her works in a shed in her garden. Somehow she also finds time to both sing and play flute in the same band she joined when she was 16 years old.

She loves musicals and goes to theatre as often as possible with her son Fred.

He has narrated many audiobooks including the Penguin Classics audiobook version of Homer’s The Odyssey and an immersive audiovisual tour for the Circus Maximus in Rome written by Margaret George for the BARDEUM mobile app. (We don't know what this is either). Theatre credits include Tartuffe, Into the Woods and the role of PJ in the 2018 revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy, Company, at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End.

Lee Mead is an actor and singer who became a household name in 2007 when he won BBC TV talent competition Any Dream Will Do, which led to him playing the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for two years at London's Adelphi Theatre. He recently played Khashoggi in the West End revival of We Will Rock You and has played roles in other shows such as Wicked, Legally Blonde The Musical, The Phantom of The Opera, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Miss Saigon and Chicago. Lee has also enjoyed a successful music career, releasing four solo albums - the first of which was certified double Gold - and will release a new recording this year.

Between 2014 and 2019, Lee enjoyed a long stint on BBC TV as regular character Ben 'Lofty' Chiltern in hospital dramas 'Casualty' and 'Holby City' and over the course of his career Lee has won several awards - including Rear of the Year in 2007!

Originally from West Virginia in the United States, Trevor came to London in 2016 to play the Genie in the original West End production of Disney's Aladdin. He has since become a permanent UK resident and his skills as an actor, singer and voiceover artist are much in demand. He played George Washingtom in Hamilton for the last three years and is currently starring in Next to Normal at The Donmar Warehouse, whilst also recording voiceover roles in numerous TV shows and movies. He has been a judge on ITV show All Star Musicals and is the first guest on this podcast to earn a two-part episode!

We talked to Trevor for so long and in such great detail that we had to split the chat into two parts. This is the main episode but we have also released a very special bonus episode where he goes into great detail about his Last Show choice that you can listen to separately at your leisure.

He has variously (and sometimes simultaneously) been chief theatre critic for the Sunday Express, The Stage, WhatsOnStage, What’s On in London magazine and LondonTheatre.co.uk, and also written for The Guardian, The Observer, Time Out and the Independent on Sunday during this time. He has taught at ArtsEd London in Chiswick on musical theatre history since 2012, as well as on the BA Acting course. He was until recently President of the Critics’ Circle, and is also on the board of Mercury Musical Developments and the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF).

Danny is probably best known for playing the role of Dodger Savage in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks from 2011 to 2015 winning numerous TV awards for his performance and has even won the Sexiest Male Award an incredible nine times. Neither John Owen-Jones or Alistair Brammer have been nominated for any Sexiest Male Awards. Ever.

He began his acting career at an early age when he played Gavroche in the UK tour of Les Miserables (with John Owen-Jones as Jean Valjean!) and then in the West End in the mid nineties. Elswhere in theatre, he has appeared in leading roles in Wicked, On The Town, The Mouse Trap, Legally Blonde, White Christmas, Amelie, Sunset Boulevard, Pretty Woman and Assassins and has been seen on TV in shows such as Midsommer Murders, Doctors, Trollied and hugely popular celebrity TV dance contest Strictly Come Dancing - where he was runner up in the 2016 series and was the first person in the show's history to earn 40 points from all four judges.

Our guest this episode is Rebecca Caine


Rebecca Caine was born in Toronto and studied at the Guildhall School of Music, London.

Uniquely, her career has been divided between Opera and Musical Theatre, making her West End debut at 19 in the role of Laurey in Oklahoma! She then sang the role of Eliza in My Fair Lady on the National tour. While making her debut at Glyndebourne as Amor in L'incoronazione di Poppea, she was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company where she created the role of Cosette in Les Miserables. After a successful West End run she joined the original cast of Phantom of the Opera to play Christine opposite Michael Crawford. She then returned to Toronto to repeat the role in the Canadian premiere of Phantom of the Opera. During her run in Toronto she joined the Canadian Opera Company to make her highly praised North American debut in the title role of Lulu. She has performed in may different shows ever since, brilliantly switching between musical theatre and opera genres, thrilling people worldwide with her extraordinary voice. Lucie is a singer, musical theatre actress, and model who originates from the village of Pentyrch just outside Cardiff in Wales.


She is an accomplished performer who first came to prominence while competing on The X Factor UK in 2009 (where she was inexplicably somehow beaten by Irish comedy pop duo Jedward...)


Lucie has performed extensively in musicals since then, playing leading roles in Wicked, Ghost, We Will Rock You, Rent, Legally Blonde, Les Miserables and many others.


In 2017 she represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Never Give Up on You" performing in front of a global television audience of 300 million people.


She released a double solo album in 2020 called Lucie Jones: Live at the Adelphi which featured a guest performance from the legendary John Owen-Jones himself (after she appeared as a guest on John's 2019 studio album Spotlight).

Do we need to write anything here? It's Michael Ball FFS! The King of Musical Theatre!!

Ok if you don't know who he is - here's a brief rundown:

As a stage actor he has won two Best Actor in a Musical Olivier Awards, appeared in West End and Broadway box office hits like Aspects of Love, The Woman in White, The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Passion, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables - in which he created the role of Marius (of course).

On TV he has been a regular presenter of The One Show and This Morning and has appeared too many times to mention elsewhere on telly but highlights (for us) include Toast of London, The Michael Ball Show, Coronation Street and That Day We Sang by Victoria Wood. He has presented loads of radio shows over the years and now has his own regular hugely popular Sunday morning show for BBC Radio 2 which has become a permant fixture of the station's schedule.

As a singer, he has released 21 bestselling solo albums, 5 bestselling albums as part of musical double act Ball and Boe, played concerts all over the world, represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest and hit the top of the singles charts with songs like Love Changes Everything, One Step Out of Time and You'll Never Walk Alone (with Captain Sir Tom Moore)

He has Honoray Doctorates from the University of Plymouth and the University of Surrey and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for Services to the Arts.

He has just released his first novel The Empire - the first in a series of novels set in a fictional Victorian theatre and returns to the West End in a new production of Aspects of Love in 2023.

Our guest this episode is Michael Ball.

Ok if you don't know who he is - here's a brief rundown:

As a stage actor he has won two Best Actor in a Musical Olivier Awards, appeared in West End and Broadway box office hits like Aspects of Love, The Woman in White, The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Passion, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables - in which he created the role of Marius (of course).

On TV he has been a regular presenter of The One Show and This Morning and has appeared too many times to mention elsewhere on telly but highlights (for us) include Toast of London, The Michael Ball Show, Coronation Street and That Day We Sang by Victoria Wood. He has presented loads of radio shows over the years and now has his own regular hugely popular Sunday morning show for BBC Radio 2 which has become a permant fixture of the station's schedule.

As a singer, he has released 21 bestselling solo albums, 5 bestselling albums as part of musical double act Ball and Boe, played concerts all over the world, represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest and hit the top of the singles charts with songs like Love Changes Everything, One Step Out of Time and You'll Never Walk Alone (with Captain Sir Tom Moore)

He has Honoray Doctorates from the University of Plymouth and the University of Surrey and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for Services to the Arts.

He has just released his first novel The Empire - the first in a series of novels set in a fictional Victorian theatre and returns to the West End in a new production of Aspects of Love in 2023.

Richard Maltby Jr is an award winning American theatre director and producer, lyricist, and screenwriter.

He conceived and directed the only two musical revues to win the Tony Award for Best Musical: Ain't Misbehavin' and Fosse and is one half of the musical theatre writing partnership Maltby and Shire - who created shows like Starting Here, Starting Now; Baby; Take Flight; Closer Than Ever and Big. 

The son of Richard Maltby Sr, a well-known orchestra leader, he is probably best known to modern musical theatre audiences as the co-lyricist for blockbuster musical Miss Saigon.

He also conceived and directed the Johnny Cash musical Ring of Fire, was director/co-lyricist for the American version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance, was co-bookwriter/lyricist for The Pirate Queen and was most recently represented on Broadway as the director of the new, original musical The Story of My Life by composer/lyricist Neil Bartram and book writer Brian Hill. The list goes on but there isn't room to write it all out here!

He is the recipient of numerous awards that include Tony Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards and Olivier Awards and was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 1977.

Since the 1970s he has constructed the monthly cryptic crossword puzzles for Harper's Magazine.

He is 85 years old - and as busy as ever.

Rob is an award winning non-binary performer that started their career in theatre at a very young age playing leading child roles in shows like Mary Poppins, Matilda, Oliver, and Les Miserables - most notably playing Gavroche at the Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert in 2010 at London's O2 Arena. In fact, Rob had appeared in 4 West End shows before they reached the age of 15!

Since then, Rob has created probably their greatest success to date with the critically acclaimed Off West End Show "My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do)?" The show is a coming of age, autobiographical story that tells the tale of Rob's childhood attempt to stage a full-blown one-person Disney show in their living room, and also explores Madge's uplifting and inspiring discovery that they are non-binary. The show played a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe and will play a limited run at The Garrick Theatre in London's West End this year.

He has quickly established himself as the UK’s hottest new impressionist for the millennial comedy generation with his contemporary take on pop culture mimicry, amassing over 10 million views online. Combining razor sharp stand-up with incisively accurate imitations of international TV celebrities, social media superstars, fellow comedians, notorious politicians and famous sports names, Luke is also familiar to television audiences with his regular appearances in the BAFTA winning Murder in Successville (BBC3), and as the breakout star of The Imitation Game on ITV1, which led to an appearance on The Royal Variety Performance (ITV1). After an incredible 9 year run performing in WWRY she is currently enjoying another long stint in Mamma Mia as Donna - a role she has been playing for over three years. She has also appeared in shows like Chicago, A Girl Called Dusty, Rent, Smokey Joe’s Café, Fame, Only the Lonely, Boogie Nights and Pippin and was recently seen giving a showstopping turn as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in at the Royal Albert Hall.

Film credits include: Mamma Mia!, Here We Go Again, Santa Claus: The Movie and Hope & Glory.

Television credits include: Footballers’ Wives, The Bill, EastEnders, The Man from Auntie, Eye Spy and The Quest.


During the pandemic she collaborated with The Theatre Cafe to create a theatrically themed cookbook named "...And 5, 6, 7, Eat!" with a portion of sale proceeds going towards the charity Acting for Others. The cookbook is available to buy at www.thetheatrecafe.co.uk


She has worked with some of the greatest names in the industry (and John Owen-Jones) and is part of the rock group Woman. In 2020 the group hit number 1 in the rock charts with their single ‘I’m A Woman’ - which they recorded with the legendary Queen guitarist Brian May - in aid of breast and ovarian cancer charities. 


Mazz released her debut solo album, ‘Midnight Mazz’ in 2018 and has recently released her brand-new album ‘Midnight Mazz - Here We Go Again’ - a collection of ABBA love songs.
