Fever Dreams - VI. What is a podcast? by Anselm McGovern

Fever Dreams is a miniseries featuring works of fiction, essays and non-fiction read without embellishment or analysis. Literature was my first great artistic love, and I regard it as possibly the richest art form, with its ability to showcase the dark interior of humanity, and traverse time, place and space unlike any other medium. Fever Dreams features a selection of the macabre and the mundane, the fantastical and the concrete, works that have struck me in a meaningful fashion, and that I feel are worth sharing.

Our sixth dream (and final for this season) is What is a podcast? by Anselm McGovern. McGovern offers a salient reckoning with social realities of podcasts, and their simultaneous alienating and comforting features. The essay can be read here.

Episode 19 - Death of the Artist

In Episode 19, after an extended life update, I discuss the passing of manga-ka Kentaro Miura and the way that cultural reactions show the range of ways that people respond to such news (in some ways better than others). With this event as a heuristic for contemporary culture, I posit a different way of viewing artists - as people first, separate from their work, and irreducible to the sum total of their creations - and speak about the power and impact of Miura's Berserk series.

Episode 16 of The Mirror is a special episode, one devoted entirely to discussing Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, a film from 2012 that is both a wonderfully crafted work of cinema, and a powerful lens through which to look at our highly-subjectivised times. The Master, in both cinematography and performance, exemplifies a rare restraint in Western cinema, and takes a beautifully naturalistic approach, finding more in common with the European arthouse than contemporary Hollywood cinema. This study is spoiler free, and goes into detail in the form and process of cinema.

Fever Dreams - III. Good For Nothing by Mark Fisher

Our third dream is Good For Nothing, by Mark Fisher. This essay details the mental health suffering of the writer and cultural critic Mark Fisher, whose work has been incredibly influential over the past decade in left-wing thought, as well impacting the culture through his relationship with musicians and artists like The Caretaker and Burial. In Good For Nothing, Fisher ties his own experiences to the collective depression we all experience under contemporary capitalism, making the necessary connection that our mental health crises are political.

This essay was published in 2014 via The Occupied Times. Tragically, Mark Fisher took his own life in 2017 after a lifetime of struggling with debilitating depression. His work remains as poignant and prescient as ever and his book Capitalist Realism is essential reading. On a very personal note, this essay describes nearly exactly the reality of my life as I have experienced it, so for this reason as well, Fisher's work is incredibly important to me.

Following a free-form narrative thread centred around our seeking of pleasure and catharsis within entertainment, Episode 12 of The Mirror is the strongest manifesto yet of my beliefs about art, the current cultural and material conditions we find ourselves in, and the alternatives available to us. I speak about the political cooptation of art by commercial interests, and the way this limits our imagination of the forms that art can take, as well as how our lives have become completely mediated by the frictionless fantasies offered to us by the Internet. Touching on the film work of Bela Tarr and Michael Haneke, which form a counterpoint to the dominant commercial format and language of Hollywood Cinema, I return to the necessity of needing to develop your own craft, beyond the reach and influence of the monoculture.

Fever Dreams - I. Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft

Our first dream is Dagon, by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Written in 1917, it was the first of many stories by Lovecraft which are considered part of his Cthulhu Mythos, featuring cosmic entities and unimaginable horrors. If you enjoy this story, I'd highly recommend his longer tale The Colour Out Of Space, which I regard as his finest writing and storytelling, and which I may consider reading for a future dream. Episode 7 - Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) (feat. Erick Flores and Jaden Joslin)

Strap in for a massive episode - in Episode 7 I'm joined by my good friends Erick Flores and Jaden Joslin from the band Native Tongue, consummate gamers both, to delve even deeper into CD Projekt Red's 'Cyberpunk 2077'. We chat about the actual experience of playing the game from its earliest release, as well as discussing the production of it through the lens of the current gaming industry, which has a lot in common and shares a lot of the same problems as the mainstream film industry, and the cultural industries at large. We cover the game's strengths as a work, the challenges of birthing such a juggernaut into the current culture that is both trying to be an open world RPG and tell a compelling story, and opine for what we specifically look for in games and cinema that our hegemonic culture seems to completely lack. This was an exciting episode to record as we touch on a range of subjects relating to the production of contemporary art, including the film 'Parasite' by Bong Joon-Ho and its resonance with Western audiences, the shift in the gaming industry from strong storytelling and artistry to the games-as-a-service model that relies on DLC and has heralded the death of complete projects, as well as the impact of Japanese video game auteurs like Hidetaka Miyazaki and his 'Dark Souls' series, and Shinji Mikami and his horror series 'The Evil Within'.

Episode 6 - Respect Your Audience

In Episode 6 of The Mirror, I examine the role of the audience in contemporary art creation, through the lens of CD Projekt Red's behemoth video game 'Cyberpunk 2077' - and all the fallout of its release, failure to live up to the expectations of its marketing and PR, and how it won't be remembered as the flawed yet potentially brilliant work that it is. With the game as a starting off point, I explore the ways that we as artists also fall into similar traps as do giant companies when creating and promoting our work, and trap our with a deep fear of how our work will be perceived - leading to dishonest representations of our work. By trying to please everyone, we end up pleasing no one, and create work that is less impactful, less enjoyable and with less to say - so I hypothesise a way of viewing your work, through honesty, self-awareness and the ultimate way to respect your audience.

Whether we're in the shower, driving to work or in bed unable to sleep at 3am, how can we create a life where we can capture these ideas that strike? In Episode 4 of The Mirror, I talk about my own experiences with this, about fighting pragmatism with your emotional instincts, and how often an idea that has been gestating in my subconscious hits me, and takes me in a direction I did not expect. I offer suggestions on how we can create a life built around allowing ideas to come, and being able to tell which ideas feel worthwhile pursuing.
