Now for those of you who don't know, not only is Robert Murphy one of my colleagues where I work as a journalist at ITV West Country, he is also my husband too.

And I'm not going to lie - this was a step out of our comfort zone - putting him (and a little bit me) under the interviewee spotlight.

But I've known the story behind Rob's book and I wanted him to share it with you. Because in a world obsessed with the number of followers we have or algorithms or needing to have big plans and huge teams of people - this is a story of trust. It's the story of a small number of close relationships which created one of the most watched dramas of the year - at the time of recording it's had more than 23 million views.

Now, today’s guest is someone I’m delighted to welcome back. The wonderful Bill Ward.

Bill started his career in advertising with Saatchi & Saatchi before following his passion for acting. You’ll know him as Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street and James Barton in Emmerdale, and he’s currently touring in The Shawshank Redemption.

But there’s another side to Bill we didn’t fully explore last time—his photography. He’s an award-winning photographer and was named Landscape Photographer of the Year. His latest book, Immersive, captures the raw beauty and power of the ocean—a project four years in the making.

It’s a joy to have him back—and he shares some brilliant insights on building a life around your passions.

From Paperchase to Founder, Bramley Products: Chloë Luxton

Chloë Luxton loved to collect flowers as a child, she’d press them then turn them into perfumes and sell them. But she had no idea then this was the first signs of the business she’d one day grow.

Later when she was looking for products for her husband’s new pub The Beckford Arms Chloë created Bramley – bath and body products are made up of essential oils and natural ingredients which capture the essence of nature surrounding them. Not only are they still used by the now Beckford Group, they have their own range for The Pig Hotels, are sold in Fortnum & Mason, John Lewis, Highgrove along with hunderes of pther hotels pubs and restaurants – and they’ve just opened their own shop in Bath.

Chloë didn’t have a plan when she left school but by following her love for nature, creating products and selling it’s taken her to a life she loves built around her family. She believes it’s all about focusing on what brings us joy and she give some wonderful advice to help you do the same.

Farrah Storr has not only been the editor of Elle Magazine, she’s also been the editor of Cosmopolitan as well as launching Women's Health magazine too. She was listed as one of the 1,000 most powerful people in the UK in 2017 plus she’s won numerous awards including Editor of the Year.

And now she’s changing the way we consume our media – as Head of writing partnerships at Substack. Farrah has also written a book called The Discomfort Zone: How to Get What you want by living fearlessly. It’s all about the obstacles we face and how rather than skirting around them – actually working through them is the most exciting and magical route you can ever take.

Tracy worked as a cancer nurse for 25 years - specialising in breast cancer and later becoming a Macmillan nurse. It’s safe to say Tracy has seen first hand how precious life is – and has spent many years with women and families at their most difficult times. But then Tracy had to make her own difficult decision to leave the job she loved and move back to Cornwall.

It was as she navigated this change, Tracy realised she had so much more she wanted to give so she decided to become a coach and founded The Wellbeing Wisdom Club – she helps women tmake the changes they need whatever their age and her brilliant Instagram account has more than sixty five thousand followers

Tracy is open brave, and yes at times this conversation gets a little emotional. But Tracy believes it’s by being open and vulnerable we can really find what is meant for us and live a life we love. This is what Tracy has done and she believes you have everything in you to do the same.

AJ says he was a really shy child growing up – he says he often didn’t feel very good at anything and wasn’t invited to parties.

However, as he got older and his confidence grew he became a broadcast journalist before spending 8 weeks in the Big Brother House.

But inside AJ was still struggling at the time. What he didn’t know then, was a woman had come to the live audience to cheer him on because she’d been so touched seeing his story while she watched at home. What AJ also didn't know was that this woman, Victoria Hyde, would later change his life.

I interviewed Victoria back in episode 1 of this series – but today AJ is not only doing his dream job as an award-winning bestselling historical fiction author but he also organises book parties with Victoria bringing authors, readers and reviewers all together.

David grew up on a council estate in Chiswick in two rooms with his mum, sister, aunt and grandmother - plus a debt collector, Mr Butler, who visited most weeks. Despite having no money, he says it was a childhood filled with love.

But when he was a teenager David was attacked by a gang and he says he was never quite the same. David went on to work in the world of showbiz as a television producer with the likes of Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and Mr Motivator (I know!)

But after having to face his own struggles, David today works as an addiction therapist. David says we all need to feel seen, whoever we are.

Ruby developed a love for make-up when, as a child, she’d watch her mum dress up for cocktail evenings and dinners where they lived in Nigeria. She later had pictures of models (not pop stars) on her wall – but back then she thought she’d be a doctor, just like her dad.

A chance encounter changed everything. Ruby went on to become a leading make-up artist working with supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford. She began her own make-up brand ‘Ruby & Millie’ with her friend and business partner, Millie - which was sold in Boots. Then, in 2007 Ruby received an MBE for services to the cosmetics industry. Ruby knew she had another Next Chapter so she founded Ruby Hammer Beauty. This Next Chapter Nibble begins with the day Ruby had her first job as a make-up artist.

Kylie Pentelow says she grew up in a big family which was filled with love and a strong hard working ethic.

But when Kylie became a mother her whole outlook on life and work changed. She decided to go freelance and today, alongside looking after her son Edward, she regularly presents BBC News, Radio 4’s Woman’s hour and BBC Radio 5 live.

In this conversation we discuss what it really feels like to present the national news, the importance of accepting setbacks and how a hot air balloon changed Kylie’s life.

Kylie spends much of her time interviewing people, so for me it was an honour to interview her – and what an interviewee she is. She’s warm, open, raw, brilliant and funny. If you live in the West Country the chances are you know Kate. She’s been a weather presenter for ITV for more than 25 years. Her sunny forecasts have brightened our televisions, no matter what the weather is actually doing.

Kate has for a long time been interested in mental health, and a few years ago she started to train as a therapist. Her idea – you talk, she listens and together we find a new way.

But it was while she was training and still working as a weather presenter Kate was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma which had spread through her body. A mother of teenage twins, married to her husband Mark, and a friend and colleague loved so much by us all – this was a devastating time.

Kate has now been given the all clear, we all watched in awe as she tackled her diagnosis with her usual determination, passion and love for life. She is now a qualified therapist and is using her dark moments to help others see there is always another way.

In this conversation we do touch on some darker sides of life, but just like Kate and her forecasts she shows there’s always sunshine behind those clouds . Kate is open, honest, humble and funny – she shows how her family’s love and her love for life helped her through. I’m very lucky to call Kate my friend, and I’m delighted I can now introduce her to you.

Monty Saul says she had an idyllic childhood – she describes her roots as ‘working class and filled with love.’ Then one night, a drink in a nearby pub in Cookham, Berkshire changed everything. Monty was spotted by a photographer, and not just any photographer, a world-famous fashion photographer. Before she knew it, she found herself being whisked away to the world of Vogue and Dior. I’ll let Monty tell you everything that happened (it’s an amazing story!) but Monty shows that by taking a chance, well, who knows where it will take you? For Monty she became a model for Dior, travelled around the world and then she met her husband Roger. He was busy creating his own business- you know the one - Mulberry.

Together they continued creating their brand and not only that, a wonderful home for their 3 boys and family which is now also a walnut farm.

Caroline says she was a perfectionist as a child and she continued living life like this way into adulthood. A straight-A student, she worked as an airline stewardess travelling with British Airways as part as Tony Blair’s cabin crew.

But when her marriage fell apart Caroline says she found herself at rock bottom.

A single mum and 80 thousands pounds in debt she says she was suffering from anxiety and depression - and then her house was repossessed. She could only think how had she ended up here?

But slowly Caroline, through therapy, began to learn more about her marriage and patterns she hadn’t even questioned were actually abuse. The more she learned, the stronger she became. She rebuilt her own life into something bigger and better than she could ever have imagined and now she’s helping other women do the same.

Today Caroline works as a trauma therapist and author. Her podcast Narcissistic Abuse and Trauma Recovery has been download more than 3 million times. She has hundreds of thousands of followers across social media and her work is being featured on shows all over the world. In this conversation we discuss:

The difference between normal and ups and downs and when it becomes something else

This is the 3rd of 3 different recordings to mark reaching 100 episodes of The Next Chapter podcasts. It’s just me and around 18 minutes long. But I thought it might help if I shared what I’ve learned. I’ve listened to all these conversations more than once and I pick up something new every time which really helps me with my own wobbles.

What I’ve always tried to do with the podcast is show I’m with you all the way. We can do this together, whatever Next Chapter you’re facing and even in the midst of storms, doubt and wondering where we should step next… there is always another way.

As I type this I am cringing, going red, wanting to watch 10 Hallmark films back-to-back and pretend I haven’t done this - but then, well that’s hardly the essence of Next Chapter living, now it it?

As part of our week of special recordings at Flowerpot HQ to mark our 100th episode of The Next Chapter - for one week only - today’s guest is well… me.

I battled with this idea for a long time, but then a conversation with a former guest and friend Nick Hounsfield, founder of The Wave, changed my mind when he gave me some great advice/a little talking to you.

“Ellie, if you don’t explain you, your story and what you’re trying to do, nobody will understand.”

Therefore - I handed over the microphone and podcast to fellow journalist/also my husband Rob Murphy. I hope you will see in this conversation that my true belief that it is possible to create a life we love, and when it doesn’t work our the first (or gazillion other times) there is always another way.

S13 Ep7: From Tyrrells Crisps & Chase Vodka to Apple Cider Vinegar: Will Chase

Will Chase grew up on a small family farm in Herefordshire called Tyrrells Court. He says it was idyllic but describes himself as a bit of a ‘brute’ at school.

All he wanted was to be a farmer and in his 20s he secured a huge loan to buy his family farm. But then he went bankrupt.

He ran away, but then he returned and thank goodness he did because it was while he was back selling potatoes to supermarkets he had his Eureka! moment. What if he turned them into crisps instead?

So, they became Tyrrells crisps - you know the ones. They were loved and sold all over the world and just six years later he sold the business for a reported 30 million pounds.

You could say that was enough of a Next Chapter. But no. He went on to create Chase Vodka which he later sold to Diageo for an undisclosed sum. And now his Next Chapter living continues as he steps into the wellness industry with Willy’s Apple Cider Vinegar.

In this episode we discuss:

* How he turned his bankruptcy into a multi-million pound business and the lessons he learned

* The importance of staying true to yourself and your values throughout it all and what happens when you don’t.

Miranda always loved books and stories as a child.

But what Miranda didn’t know then was this love of books would help her create her very own empire. Miranda worked in publishing for 20 years and ended up at Penguin Random House with the huge job of Editorial Director and then Senior Commissioning Editor too.

But when a change came in Miranda’s home life, she left the corporate world. It was when she was considering what to do next she came across the inspirational Do Lectures, she sent an email and everything changed. She founded the Do Book Company and these little pocket books are now inspiring people all around the world.

William Hanson had no idea when his granny gave him a book on etiquette as a young boy that it would, as he says, ‘launch a thousand ships.’ He became Britain’s youngest Etiquette Expert and he began travelling all over the world teaching.

S13 Ep2: From Counter-Trafficking to World Leading Voice on Gender Equality: Dr Zara Nanu MBE

Dr Zara Nanu MBE grew up in Moldova and she thought she’d work in education - however her path took her more towards social justice. But then she discovered something she knew she had to change.

She learned that while predictions show we’ll be driving
driverless cars in just a few decades, it will take more than 217 years to close the Gender Pay Gap.

Zara knew she had to do something about this – I’ll let her
tell you what, but it meant she entered the world of tech - which she said she knew nothing about. And as with all Next Chapters there were many ups and many downs.

She pitched to investors more than 100 times and didn’t raise a single penny and on top of this she was mistaken for a waitress at some of these events. But Zara carried on and today her work is helping women all over the world. She’s now one of the leading voices in the world about gender equality, she’s been awarded an MBE and she sits on the Women’s Leadership board at Harvard University.

If there was ever anyone, I’d feel intimated by doing my
first live event it would be Zara. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

She’s humble, open and so honest. We talk about her own imposter syndrome (especially when she’s at the Harvard Leadership Board next to Emmy winners), the importance of keeping going and how she’s dealt time and time again with knockbacks.

Zara believes if we really open ourselves to our possibilities
and the power we all have inside of us - anything is possible and we really all can create the change we need.

Amanda has written 35 novels as well as novellas, non-fiction books and a couple of plays. She’s sold millions and millions of copies in 22 countries and is one of the most read authors on Kindle Unlimited. What’s even more amazing about Amanda is this all happened in the last 11 years. Amanda didn’t start writing until she was 43. Since then she’s bought her dream home for her family and she spends her days writing the stories she loves.

But what Amanda didn’t know was that writing would help in such a special way when her son Josh became poorly with depression. S12 E10: From a Black Belt & Chicago to Historical Fiction Author: Jane Steen

The small fact that Jane Steen is named after Jane Eyre - may explain her lifelong fascination with historical fiction.

But despite this, Jane says, for many years she couldn’t find her own path.

She lived in different countries like Belgium and Chicago, she studied law and she worked in real estate in America too. Then, in her fifties she became a black belt in karate. Jane loves a challenge and nothing stopped her fighting back. (I’ll let her tell you the story.)

But then one day after she was forced to leave a job, she started to write historical novels. However, it was only when she started publishing these books herself and learning the business sides of the industry, she knew she’d found her own path.

S12 Ep 9: From Rag Trade to Garden Design & a Real-Life Badass: Angela Brooke-Smith

(I’m going to make a small bet - you’ve never met anyone quite like Angela.)

Angela started off her career in the rag trade. She learned from the best and she had a wonderful time in fashion in Fulham in the 80s, living a wonderful life. But then she started to think she wanted to make a change . Deep-down Angela wanted to design gardens. She’d talk about it, tell her friends about it, but never actually did it – but then one of these friends gave her a moment of tough love (which was brilliant… Angela will explain) and everything changed.

Angela created a second career not only designing gardens but growing flowers too. She returned to her beloved West Country and created a new home.

But then a bombshell happened - after 30 years of marriage – Angela and her husband divorced and she found herself having to start all over again.

I’m going to warn you, this is a ‘colourful’ conversation - i.e there's lots of swearing if you’re listening in front of children. But this is why I love Angela so much - Angela is Angela.

Claire Davis is one half of the Midlife Mentors – the other is her husband James. They are multi-award winning coaches who’ve helped thousands of people have a complete reset, midlife. S12 Ep 6: From Hong Kong to Bristol through the world of PR: Sarah Woodhouse

When Sarah received a lower grade at A level – she describes it now as a ‘brilliant thing.’ It was thanks to this she studied PR instead of English at university and it opened up a whole world she loved. It’s taken her to Harrods and other big brands in the UK and then all the way to Hong Kong, when a trip to visit friends ended up in a 7 year stay and her own business.

When she returned to England and to Bristol as a single mum, she didn’t think she’d be able to carry on with the world of PR, but how wrong she was. A coach asked her one question which changed the whole way she was looking at life, then she stumbled upon a little PR agency on a back street and her world changed again.

Sarah is funny, modest and gives a wonderful insight into life in Hong Kong. She talks about the importance of mentors and she gives some brilliant advice at the end. (I’ve been using all her tips ever since!) But Sarah’s story is a story of women helping women. She shows it really is possible to create a life you love, even if it takes you in all different directions you hadn’t planned.

S12 Ep 5: From helping young people to Wrexham United, Sports Psychologist: Sam Katodia

Sam has always loved both Sport and psychology. It’s his passion to bring the best out of everyone he works with – and where better to test psychology, he says, than in sport? Because if it fails - well, the results are clear.

Since he made a phone call to Colchester United after leaving university – he’s worked with all different footballers over the years, he even wrote a book and Cristiano Ronaldo wrote the foreword… (I know!)

Today he works with the first team at Wrexham United – yes, that one – the club owned by Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and also the subject of the Disney+ documentary, Welcome to Wrexham.

But Sam has also created the programmes for our charitable partner, the boxing charity, Empire Fighting Chance. He works with young people who are struggling and is helping to transform so many lives.

He says he uses exactly the same methods with a young person in trouble at school as he does with a first team footballer at Wrexham. But Sam’s method is different to what I’ve ever come across (and I’ve been researching mental health for years). We discussed so much in this conversation including…

S12 Ep4 From Editor-in-Chief, OK Magazine to PR Consultant & Screenwriter: Lisa Byrne

What is it really like in the world of celebrity?

Lisa has always loved learning about people - she has been, in her own words ‘nosy’ since she was a child. It was this curiosity which took her to journalism and eventually to be the Editor-in-Chief at OK magazine for ten years.

She has partied with the Beckhams, she was also with Katie Price when she married Peter Andre. She’s been on a boat with George Clooney & Brad Pitt and has spent time with Prince William. She has in other words, been behind the scenes and seen it all.

But when the world of celebrity began to change (and not in a good way, she explains), Lisa began to feel it was time to do something else. She also suffered personal heartbreak and then had her own diagnosis to deal with – so she moved from London back to her roots in York.

Lisa now runs her own PR consultancy looking after high-end brands like The Ivy restaurants. But she’s also a screenwriter and is bringing the stories of inspiring, historical women we’ve hardly heard of, back to life. Her love of learning about people continues.

Lisa is also writing a series on one of the greatest historical mysteries of all time, what happened to the Princes in the Tower? The project - called The Cold King - will be based on the theory that King Edward V was secretly sent to Coldridge in Devon.

Lisa is very open, honest and brave in this conversation – we cover all sides of life - and do be warned we touch on some very difficult parts too. But Lisa believes we have to take these tough times and use them to help drive us into our Next Chapters. She believes we are all capable of creating our dreams and the only person standing in our way is us.

S12 Ep3: From Boomtown Festival to Founder, Wake The Tiger: Graham MacVoy

Graham had what he describes as a ‘casual relationship’ with university, but then again, Graham has always done things ‘slightly differently.’ His jobs have included organising snowboarding events while living in the French Alps, working on the Boomtown Festival in Winchester and being co-founder and Managing director of Wake The Tiger – the world’s first amazement park, based in Bristol which attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.

So, what is an amazement park and how do you get millions of pounds of investment when you can’t even explain what it is? And, how do you do all this when there is a global pandemic happening too? Some may say it would be impossible – Graham has a different story.

He believes it all comes down to how much we believe in what we’re doing. He tells us how he copes with rejection and gets back up time and time again – plus he gives the real story of how Wake The Tiger got it’s name.

Joanna Toye grew up as an only child surrounded by adults - and she wonders if this is what gave her her love for stories. She’s spent her whole career telling them. She worked for decades as a scriptwriter & producer for Radio 4’s The Archers, as well as other treasures like Crossroads and EastEnders.

But then there was a twist in her own story, and Joanna decided it was time to create her own world - one which suited her and her family. A trip to an exhibition changed everything and she began writing historical saga novels.

In this conversation Joanna tells us what it’s really like to be a writer of some of the biggest storylines on our biggest soaps (it’s fascinating, I promise!). We discuss what happens when real-life doesn’t go to plan, plus we discover the inside truth of a story involving EastEnders, Dot Cotton and her recycling.. (cue EastEnder DOOF, DOOF, DOOF, DOOFs).

Joanna is open about her own fears and wobbles and she really is a wonderful storyteller. She believes there’s no such thing as failure. She also believes we must find a way to be true ourselves because this is what gives us the power to create a world truly meant for us.

A chance encounter changed everything. Ruby went on to become a leading make-up artist working with supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss and
Cindy Crawford. She began her own groundbreaking make-up brand ‘Ruby & Millie’ with her friend and business partner, Millie - which was sold in Boots.
Then, in 2007 Ruby received an MBE for services to the cosmetics industry.

You could say Ruby had done more than enough. But after some time out after the passing of her beloved mum – she knew, deep down, she had another Next Chapter - so she launched ‘Ruby Hammer Beauty.’ Ruby believes we should never have any regrets.

I remember watching Ruby on television when I was a teenager. The Clothes Show cheered Sunday afternoons and I always watched Ruby in awe. She was so cool, poised and oozed glamour. Matt says he was a quiet boy at school who could often be found in the library – but its this love of learning which has taken him to where he wants to be. First, learning about film and photography, he then worked at the BBC and later went on to create his own video marketing company.

But when Covid hit, Matt lost his entire business overnight. His wife, Lori, was pregnant with twins and suddenly their main source of income had gone. But Lori was following her own passion – writing books, so Matt went back to learning. He learnt how to create Facebook ads and get Lori’s books out in the world – and my goodness they’ve done this.

They’ve taken Lori’s books to a six-figure business - all around their young family - and now Matt’s helping other authors to get their books out in the world too. He says he wants to plant a seed in writer’s minds to show them what’s possible. He’s done exactly this with me which is why I wanted to introduce him to you.

Because whether your passion is books or living a life where you simply do more of what you love – Matt believes it really is possible. It’s not just about learning, but applying what you learn too. He says it’s all about deciding what direction we really want to go in and he gives some wonderful advice to help us work out how.

Lynn Jinks has always been fascinated by people’s energy. She loved to act and so she studied drama at university. She loved appearing on stage and also co-founded a theatre company which gave voices to disadvantaged women and girls. She then moved into television presenting and worked on a shopping channel selling jewellery.

It was here she developed her love for gems and began to look at how they affected our energy. She trained as a Crystal Healer and Spiritual Life Coach, and now after 20 years, she’s leaving the ‘golden handcuffs’ of a stable job, as she describes it - and will be working as a Healer & Coach, full-time.

Now, whether you think it’s all a bit woo-woo or not, this conversation is fascinating. Lynn tells us how she’s helped people get over severe pain, change directions completely and leave behind old patterns and versions of themselves - just by ‘cleansing their energy.’

Lauren has always been determined. She had posters of supermodels on her wall as a child and always wanted to work at Vogue when she was growing up. She did this and spent years there as its news editor – going to fashion shows, writing articles and interviewing some of the biggest names in the industry – and yes, she did meet those supermodels.

But when Lauren had her own children she began to think she needed a change. She became a Doula and she now supports mothers and fathers as their babies come into the world. She’s helped many different families including the radio presenter Mollie King and her husband Stuart Broad.

Now, working at Vogue and being a Doula may seem like two completely different worlds – but Lauren explains how she has been able to use so much of what she learned in her first chapter. She also gives some brilliant advice at the end of this episode about tackling fear - the same advice she uses when helping women about to give birth.

Lauren gives us a wonderful look behind the scenes at one of our biggest fashion magazines. But she also knew what it was time to leave and she shares how she made the difficult decision to leave the life she’d wanted for so long, for something which suited her, her husband and her four children now. Lauren has created a life ,she truly and she shares some wonderful wisdoms to help us all do the same.

Series 11 Ep 5: From Singing & PR to Body Confidence Coach: Lindsay Reid

Lindsay hasn’t just had one next chapter. She’s had several – from playing badminton for Scotland as a child, to working in sports journalism, singing in bars around Scotland and working in PR. She’s now using everything she’s learned in her work as a body confidence coach – which she decided to train as when she saw so many wonderful women in her life struggling.

She has her own podcast and over the years she says she’s worked with thousands of people helping them to feel happier within themselves and improve their self-acceptance.

Lindsay believes we all have it in us to ‘shine’ and it’s all about how we feel. But she believes the ‘feeling’ we’re all hoping for always comes after the action. The feeling of wholeness, peace and contentment - however that looks for us. Whatever it is we’re putting off, is no doubt the very thing we need to do. She believes deep down we all know what we need to feel our best, whether it’s a little more exercise, changing our diet or leaving a job which is making us miserable. It’s the thoughts that are holding us back, but when we question where did those thoughts come from and are they really true?… well, we can push them aside, a bit like the clouds - and the sun they’ve been hiding can begin to shine again.

Welcome to a first for The Next Chapter. Our first Next, Next Chapter Episode!!!

I am delighted and thrilled to welcome back one of my first and very special guests: John Scott.

All my Next Chapter guests are special but those who came on in the very first series are extra special as they had no idea what this podcast was – or if I could do what I hoped I’d do.

John’s appearance was S1 Ep2. (I would highly recommend you listen to this if you haven’t already.) He’s brilliant, fun and what a story. We talk about life as a Hollywood costume maker when he worked on films like Four weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Tomb Raider and some of the Bond films. Then, he was a regular face on national television shows like Lorraine and This
Morning and when I last spoke to him, he was hosting his own sewing channel and show.

Since then, it’s no surprise John has had even more Next Chapters – including writing and publishing a book (which sold out in minutes) and now he’s starting his very own television platform called Threads of Life.
It’s exciting, ground breaking and brilliant- just like John.

In this episode he tells us how there is an actual real-life Princess John Scott in the world (I kid you not), how he manages his energy and why he has no plans to stop yet, in fact looking into the future may be another Next Chapter - watch this space.

Kathy had a huge job in advertising which took her all over the world. But behind the glamour and fabulous hotels Kathy was suffering from burnout. One routine trip to the doctors changed everything – I’ll let Kathy tell you what happened but Kathy knew she had to make a change.

This change she found was in vegetables. Yes, vegetables! Gorgeous, colourful, wonderful veg. Her fascination of watching them grow and then creating delicious recipes with them, it turned out was the medicine she needed. When she was better, she went to cookery school and then became a food writer. Kathy created a wonderful website and has had partnerships with places like Waitrose. She wrote a cookbook From The Veg Patch which was named one of Delicious Magazines Top Picks of 2021, she takes part in festivals and has also held regular supper clubs. Plus she has a wonderful blog - Tales From A Veg Patch filled with wonderful recipes for us all.

Kathy is open, honest and brave. She tells us what life really was like in the world of advertising (i.e was it like Madmen?) and the reality of life as a freelancer. But best of all Kathy shows even in the darkest moments, we can find light, sunshine and even a new path to a whole new life

S11 Ep 2: From 60 Minute Makeover & A bottle of vodka a day to Sobriety Coach: Dave Wilson

If you ever watched 60 Minute Makeover with Peter Andre – you may remember a lovely carpet fitter called Dave Wilson. But what we didn’t see was Dave was hiding a big drinking problem and at one stage he was drinking a litre of vodka a night.

Then, one day when he was 54 years old, everything changed. I’ll let Dave tell you what happened but five years ago he stopped drinking and he’s never looked back. He has his own podcast called One For the Road (which has around 10,000 downloads a week), he interviews celebrities, world experts and shares stories of all different people and how they’ve overcome their struggles. He’s also written a bestselling book, he has a huge following on social media and he works a coach – helping mainly women with what he describes as grey area drinking.

Dave believes we all tell ourselves a story, like he did. He could never live without drinking, he would lose his friends if he gave it up and he’d never be happy again. But it turned out the opposite happened. He didn’t lose a life, he gained one. He has more friends, more adventure and more joy than he ever did when he drank.

Dave believe there’s always hope – and we do have the power to make change – but this starts with changing those stories we tell ourselves, about everything, not just how much we drink. This conversation had a huge impact on me (and something very odd happened in the lead up to Dave appearing… I explain in the episode, but thank you again Universe). I hope this conversation will help you as much as it has helped me.

S11 Ep 1: From lawyer to indie author - selling 10 million books: LJ Ross

Louise Ross loved reading and storytelling as a child but she had her heart set on being a lawyer. She became a barrister and while she loved helping people -she started to feel it was time to do something else. (In fact speaking of skies, it was when she realised her head was always down and she never looked up and appreciated a blue sky, she knew something had to change).

Her husband James planted a seed on a train journey which changed everything. That tiny seed led to Louise writing 27 books and selling more than 10 million copies. She has her own publishing label (Dark Skies Publishing) and her work is also helping celebrate people living in the North East. Her books have been among the biggest sellers on Amazon and at one point 16 of them were in the top 50 in the charts.

But Louise believes it has nothing to do with algorithms, large advertising budgets or any trends or secret formulas . Louise believes we must all ask ourselves this one question and be completely honest with the answer...

What is it that we really want to achieve?

Louise is humble, gracious and so generous with her thoughts. She has been a big inspiration to me for so long – but even if your next chapter isn’t about writing, Louise’s approach has helped her create a wonderful life for her and her family and she believes we’re all able to do the same.

Joanne Mallon 'quite' enjoyed her job as a television producer working on shows like Vanessa, This Morning & GMTV. But she wanted to do something she loved which had a much deeper meaning so more than 20 years ago she trained to be coach.

She's spent the past 2 decades helping people not just discover what it is they want to do it, but to find a way to actually do it. She's also the host of her own podcast - 5 Minutes To Change your Life… Full disclosure, I love this podcast. She discusses all sorts of problems: from people-pleasing, negative thinking,
trying to control everything - and gives some simple tips in just 5 minutes.

Joanne believes we all have a calling and we owe it to ourselves (and everyone around us) to be kind enough to listen to it. She gives some great advice about fear, how it drives most of us but how we can step around it. And she gives some wonderful practical festive advice.

I appreciate there's not a lot of time at the moment so I've divided the episode into two. Today's episode is her story. Then next week she'll give some brilliant festive advice, like coping with overwhelm and those tricky relatives.

Annie Garthwaite loved history as a child. She went to a comp in Hartlepool where in her words, if you got 3 CSE’s your name would go on the wall. Annie then, would never have believed that one she’d day be an historical fiction author. But thanks to a love of reading shared from her mother and a wonderful history teacher, Annie decided this was what she really wanted to be in. Only in her twenties, she discovered it was much harder than she imagined, so she decided to set aside her dream until the age of 55.

The idea being she’d spend the next 3 decades earning enough
money to retire and then she’d write the book she’d been planning. I mean what 20 something-year-old really keeps such a plan? Annie did.

I’ll let Annie tell you how, but her fascination with strong women in history and one in particular has been her driving force for so many years. Annie had been learning about Cecily Neville since the classroom, the mother of Richard III who had 12 children, played a key role in the War of the Roses and lived until she was 81 (in the 15th Century!) But her story had never been told.

The more Annie learned about Cecily, and the longer she sat
in the boardrooms of her huge corporate Communications job, Annie realised life for women hadn’t changed nearly as much as she’d thought.

Annie believes we must keep telling women’s stories to help
bring the change we need. But Annie is also a strong, passionate woman and it’s an honour to share her story with you.

A few years ago if you’d met Michal it would have been easy to
think she was one of those women who ‘had it all.’ A huge job - Head of Global
Culture at Tik Tok, (I know!), the mother of 4 beautiful children, a
wonderful husband plus, a wardrobe full of designer clothes.

But inside she was struggling – really struggling with terrible anxiety. She’d been in therapy for 15 years and going over the
past - while informative was not helping this awful feeling. But then she began to study Jewish wisdoms and everything changed. Michal learned so much she’s written a book called What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid.

Michal is so open, honest and generous with her thoughts in this
conversation. She tells us what life is really like at those great big tech
companies and how some of the biggest leaders who she still coaches have just the same insecurities as us all.

Michal was told several times not to be herself. But thankfully
she didn’t listen. She says it’s only by putting aside fear and being true self- you find your place in the

in her fifties. She did all different jobs and shows how sometimes different twists and turns may not always be what we want the time but they take us to exactly where we are supposed to be.

family lost a lot of money – it drove her to take control of her own finances.

But she believes our relationship with money is all about mindset and we can all learn to break free from whatever it is that is holding us back. Fanny gives great practical advice about what to do if you are struggling - but most of all she believes we should not be scared of money. Fanny believes we should treat it as an adventure and tackle it with courage and curiosity. Reverend Clive Jennings was brought up in a council house and he says he wears his roots like a badge. Although he loved drama and wanted to be an actor, he joined the police and worked in the Firearms Department, VIP Protection, The Special Branch and the Counter Terrorist Branch too. But then life changed for Clive and he became a Vicar in the wonderful town of Clevedon.

Clive has experienced so much and has seen all the different sides of life. But he believes - whether through his work in the police or as a Vicar - it’s all about connection. This is what we're all looking for, whoever we are. We discuss so much in this conversation - from firearms, bomb scene management, protecting VIPs to love, loneliness and where we should go when we're feeling lost. There’s so much to think about in this conversation - and I know how busy many of you are - I divided it into two episodes. There is so much at the moment about the dark side of life, it's easy to forget there is so much warmth and love too - and that there are people like Clive. He’s kind, thoughtful and so generous with his thoughts. He believes sometimes, without realising we can all lose the joy in our lives and joy is what we all need, as long as we allow it in. Cat, in her own words, questioned school and authority when
she was a child, but navigated her own way through this, so who better to work with young people now and help them find their own?

Cat trained as an Occupational Therapist and she worked in a psychiatric unit for several years.
But after many years of supporting children and young people in statutory services she decided to ‘pack up her tool-kit’ as she describes it. The system, she believes is broken, so now she’s helping parents access what they need, when they need it.

Cat works as child and young person’s therapist and is also
the Boxing Therapy Manager at the charity, Empire Fighting Chance, where she has helped thousands and thousands of young people turn transform their lives.
(We’ve also interviewed the founder, Martin Bisp on this very podcast).

Cat teaches them techniques not just to cope but thrive as
the person they are – in short, how to be their true selves. She is all about
having fun, and gives some great advice for us adults too – but warning alert: there’s some tough love in there.

Cat speaks openly about where she thinks we are all going
wrong with our young people, but she gives brilliant advice about how she believes we can fix this. Her mission is to take away stigma and labels and teach children what they can’t learn in school – Cat does this in such a warm and unique way, I learned so much from this conversation and I hope you will

Now, most of us know Maggie from the days of Swap Shop. Millions of children tuned in every Saturday – and she helped transform weekend mornings. Noel Edmonds, Keith Chegwin, John Craven and then Maggie bringing joy to our screens. Hours of live television every week (top fact, they only ever rehearsed the first 30 seconds) and their audience was so big they attracted the biggest stars in the world.

She then moved to Tomorrow’s World where for 8 years she helped change the way we all think about science and technology. This all helped inspire her to begin her own Next Chapter and set up the charity Teen Tech which 15 years later she and her team are still changing and transforming the way young people think about science and maths.

Maggie believes it’s all about learning – and we must all keep doing this, not just for us but for our children’s too.

Maggie is open, honest and humble. She tells us how she applied for the Swap Shop job without even knowing about it and how self-doubt nearly cost her that job at Tomorrow's World. But a long time ago she taught herself to recognise her fear and she promised to say 'yes' more. I’m so pleased she said yes to this conversation..

This is the last conversation in this series and what a way to finish!

I loved this when I first recorded it but when I listened to it back, I learnt even more.

Andrea is even more open and honest in this second half. She talks about how appearing on a reality show changed everything for her. How she made her decision to leave a huge, high profile job like the host of Loose Women and what happened the day she announced it on air. (Spoiler alert… everything she’d been planning fell apart.)

Andrea also gives some tough but great advice. She tells us how she copes when someone is making her feel inferior and why she believes we all have much more control than we think we do. But what I love about Andrea – she isn’t just talking the talk, she has absolutely walked the walk and still is. But like she says, Next Chapters are a bit like taking steps in high heels, you may only be able to take tiny ones at a time, but as long as you keep going, you’ll get there in the end.

Most of you will know Andrea as one of our favourite presenters on Daytime Television for more than 2 decades. She brightened our mornings on GMTV as the lovely weather girl and then she was Loose Women’s longest serving host for 13 years. She’s also been on so many other shows like Dancing on Ice and Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins. Plus, she’s interviewed some of the biggest names in showbusiness: Oprah, Drew Barrymore, Beyonce and Michael Bublé to name just a few.

But what you might not know is how Andrea came to be in these jobs and what life was really like behind the scenes. From her days of training as a journalist to being a household name - Andrea has shown determination, bravery, and resilience throughout it all

In 2020 Andrea decided to leave her enormous job in television for her own Next Chapter. She wanted to concentrate on what she loves doing: helping people - and especially women - to think differently about

The wonderful Suzi Grant has made it her mission to encourage as many women as possible to feel good no matter what our age. The ‘nutritionist with a passion for fashion’ began her career as a journalist. She was a roving reporter on Capital Radio, she worked on TV AM, she was one of the faces of Meridian plus she reported for Radio 4. But when her mum died suddenly at 62 from a heart attack, it made Suzi rethink everything. She put the 'work hard, play hard' days of journalism behind her and became a nutritionist. She helped people and has written 3 books.

Then in 2014, encouraged by her godchildren she started a
blog. She wanted to share everything she loved from nutrition, fashion and style and travel and lifestyle for the Over50s. She had no idea how much this would take off. She now has 110k followers, her work has been featured in the New York Times and she’s a model travelling all over the world spreading her mission that older women can and do have fun.

It was all due to a chance conversation with her French
teacher at school that Anna Elshafei decided to study Chinese. Little did Anna
know this decision wouldn’t just take her to China but all around over the
glove, she’d marry an Egyptian and she would forever have a sense of adventure.

Years later while working as a construction lawyer Anna
couldn’t find any slippers she wanted to wear when she was at home entertaining
friends and she didn’t want to wear heels (I mean who does?). So, using the
same sense of adventure and bravery Anna created her own. Her designs are now
sold all over and she’s excited to know where this new adventure will take her
next.

In this conversation we talk about what it’s really like to
start your own business when you have absolutely no idea what to do. Anna also
gives some really helpful and practical advice about how to begin a next
chapter if you’re stuck in a job you don’t like, but can’t afford to leave.

Jake is the first professional sports person I’ve had on the podcast and I was fascinated to learn all the ins and outs of how you go from turning a passion like rugby into a career.

And what a career he has had. Jake grew up in New Zealand and admits he didn’t really have a plan B. He just wanted to play the game he loved. He was captain for New Zealand under-20s before he moved to Ireland to become a full-time professional and then to Bristol.

He now owns Café Burra in Bristol with his lovely wife Adele and team-mate Luke Morahan. It’s been voted Bristol café of the year and they’ve opened a second one too.

We talk about what it’s like to walk out in front of a crowd of thousands and how he tackles his fears. How he copes when he doesn’t get the result he wants. And we also discuss the importance of continual learning - it was only when he read a book about business that he realised rugby had already taught him enough to open his own.

S8: Ep6: From the face of ITV Calendar for 20 years to writer, presenter & a Next Chapter for Christine: Christine Talbot

Welcome to the last episode of Series 8... but hold on tight! I’m so excited to bring you Christine’s story…. I’ve admired Christine from afar for such a long time.

Christine Talbot always loved books as a child but she had no idea then that this love for storytelling would take her to be one of Yorkshire’s most-loved journalists and presenters. Christine has worked in newspapers, the BBC and ITV. She’s presented lifestyle shows, was a pioneer presenter on one of the first health and lifestyle digital channels and for twenty years she sat next to Duncan Wood most nights at 6pm for ITV’s Calendar programme. She’s covered some of Yorkshire’s biggest stories like the Hillsborough Inquiry. She’s interviewed Prime Ministers and was the first person to interview a young Gareth Gates. (I know!)

It would have been so easy for Christine to stay doing the job she’d loved, but deep-down she knew she had another Next Chapter in her. So she took a deep breath, left the job she loved and made the leap to see where it would take her.

Christine is now writing, presenting, supporting mid-life women (yay) and learning more about herself by the day. We speak about all different next chapters – her TV debut (which is the best TV debut story I’ve ever heard), what it was like when she had to tell her own story following a diagnosis, and how her first job in news was in her airing cupboard.

At a time when I think it’s fair to say the media isn’t always regarded in the most positive of lights – Christine, I believe, is one of the best journalists we have.

Fran Harkness lives in Easton and Bristol and for a long time was thinking there weren’t any little gift shops near her. She’d worked for years at The Folk House in the city as a Programme Manager, and she also knew how full the area was of talented artists and creators … so what did she do? She set up BAM.

BAM Bristol is a not-for-profit shop and space on a mission to support local artists and promote creativity in the community. She stocks mainly work of people living nearby and encourages everyone to tap into those creative juices by holding workshops. Any profits go back into the community.

Fran believes sometimes we just need to look a little closer to home. We talk about the importance of friends in Next Chapters, trusting our gut instincts and understanding we can’t always be good at everything. Fran is encouraging, honest and as joyous as all the colourful creations in her store.

Hannah Martin was a single mum working as a copywriter when she thought she just couldn’t carry on as she was. She left her job and went freelance, but when she did, she noticed so many of her fabulous and talented friends were also struggling. Some had had huge jobs and were highly experienced but they were finding it almost impossible to have a fulfilling career which would also work around their children. She thought if they were struggling, then there were more than likely thousands, if not millions of women struggling too. So, she set up The Talented Ladies Club, an online magazine helping women with their businesses and careers.

Ten years later Hannah has over 100,000 monthly readers around the world. Her masterclasses, blogs and her Get Rich Slow podcast are all brilliant. Hold on tight – not only did you have the wonderful Milly Johnson last week… Get ready to meet one of the most brilliant, encouraging and wonderful women writing fiction today.

Katie was a mother looking after her 3 children and their dogs while her husband was away at sea, when she had that feeling as if something was missing, a bit like a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

Katie started writing Mills and Boons novels, carving out moments while she was running her children’s bath. For 8 years she faced rejections, but she never gave up. Her writing may not have been right for Mills and Boon, but she did find an agent and publisher who loved her work.

Katie has just written her 30th novel. Her books have sold in their millions in the UK alone as well as all over the world. But what’s even more special about Katie is how supportive she is to other writers. She’s been the President of the Romantic Novelists Association for more than ten years and has helped so many aspiring authors as well as setting up the Katie Fforde Bursary scheme. Since recording this episode Katie has won the Lifetime Achievement Award for the RNA and it could not be more deserved.

We discuss Katie’s method-acting style of research, how going to a ballet school when she struggled to dance taught her resilience and the importance of finding her tribe (think Milly Johnson and Jill Mansell… I mean what a tribe). Katie has built a career from her passion – all around the family she adores in Gloucestershire. Plus, she gives some wonderful advice to help you do the same – whatever your missing piece of the puzzle may be.

Hold on tight, lovely listeners because what a woman I have for you!

Milly Johnson is the author of romantic fiction who has sold millions of copies of her books all over the world. She’s won numerous awards including Outstanding Achievement for the Romantic Novelists Association. But before all this she was a single mum, writing messages for greetings cards, working in Asda in Leeds and then working on her books through the night propped up - as she says - by Walkers Shortbread and Douwe Egberts coffee. It took Milly 15 years to find a publisher (fifteen!!) but since then, her books have not only entertained they’ve addressed difficult issues, they’ve helped women break free and perhaps most importantly feel seen.

We talk about the sandwich generation, what happens if Keanu Reeves would knock at her door and the power of picking ourselves up and carrying on. Yes - Milly is one of my favourite authors and one of my biggest role models, but I think if you didn’t know Milly before this conversation you’ll agree what a special woman she is.

Farrah has also written a book called The Discomfort Zone: How to Get What you want by living fearlessly. It’s all about the obstacles we face and how rather than skirting around them – actually working through them is the most exciting and magical route you can ever take.

Farrah tells us what life really is like at those Paris Fashion weeks. She also talks about the importance of being ourselves and how it’s this which gives us the lives we’re meant to have. Farrah is warm, modest and so encouraging – I cannot think of a better way to begin Series 8.

This is where my lovely listeners get in touch and ask me to interview someone they would love to hear from. Abigail Rogers got in touch, wanting to hear from a surgeon, and Mr Cha Rajakaruna very kindly agreed. But Cha isn’t just kind, he’s humble, filled with passion for his work and has saved and transformed so many lives. Cha talks about what it was like growing up in Sri Lanka during a civil war, going to school in someone’s house and how he arrived in Bristol and found the hospital (and lady for him.)

Cha would never say this, but he is one of the most respected heart surgeons in the world. He talks honestly about what it’s really like to do a job like his and what it means to him and his family. It’s one of my longest conversations, but I challenge you to find a part that you’d want to leave out.

S7 Ep6: From the local record shop to writer of Mamma Mia!: Catherine Johnson

Mamma Mia! Here we go again! I’m so sorry - how can I resist this? But if you need a dose of Abba and to meet one of the kindest, most talented and humble women with her own Hollywood story then this is the conversation for you.

Catherine discovered her love of writing when she was six years old. She wrote all the time, but little did she know that when she was working behind the counter in her local record shop, something she wrote then would help pave the way to her writing one of the biggest musicals and films of all time.

Catherine won a competition and started writing plays before moving on to television, but it was when she met the producer Judy Craymer over a cup of tea, everything changed. Mamma Mia! the musical has been seen by over 65 million people all over the world. On its the release the film made history as the highest grossing movie of all time at the UK and Irish box office. What’s even more special is the musical and the film were created by 3 women who formed a special and fabulous friendship.

Catherine tells us what really happened when she met Bjorn and Benny, she talks about the moment she found out Meryl Streep was going to star in the film, and how friendships have seen her through all her Next Chapters. Catherine is a real superstar in every sense of the word and she gives some fabulous advice for all our Next Chapters.

He’s also worked with independent publishers, written his own books Tips from a Publisher and Literary Cats - and he regularly hosts Guardian Masterclasses. But, like all good stories there’s an extra twist – on top of all this Scott writes questions for Mastermind.

Christine grew up in the mountains in Switzerland – I mean how lovely. She then worked for the Swiss National Bank and her job took her all over the world. But when she had her children she said she felt increasingly trapped – she remembered how creative she was a child and wanted to feel less stuck.

Christine tried all sorts of things, taking classes, and finding out what she loves before she settled on being a filmmaker. She can work around her family, she makes her own schedule and she’s making a living out of something she is passionate about.

Christine says it’s often self-belief which is missing rather than the skill. We talk about how school can define who you think you are but how wrong it can be, and she is thoughtful, kind and gives some brilliant advice about dealing with doubt and how to let it pass.

I know, I know - all my guests on the Next Chapter are special - but if you are a parent or someone with a young person in your life - if you have any worries about them at all - this is an episode you should not miss...

Martin was working in finance when he and a friend saw two young men in their local park dealing drugs. They knew they had to do something and couldn’t let life in their community carry on as it was – so they started Empire Fighting Chance – it’s a charity which helps young people with all sorts of issues – through therapy and non-contact boxing.

Their work has helped transform the lives of thousands of people, they work with schools, the police, they’ve helped so many with their mental health – they lobby Parliament and they’ve even attracted the attention of the Royal Family. But this isn’t just a story about boxing – it’s about family coming together, community, friendship, believing in what you’re doing and never giving up. In this conversation Joe talks about standing up to bullies, why charity for him always begins at home and how his whole life is a love letter to Bristol – the city where he still lives.

Joe Hemmings was just 14 when he took up a Saturday job at a hairdressing salon. He had no idea this would be the start of a career which would take him further than he could have imagined.

He now has his own business, Bloggs in Bristol, which has been voted Salon of the year not once but three times – and has just been given a place in the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame.

I’ve known Joe for years now, he and his team have been cutting my hair, but as you know when you get your hair cut, you often talk with your hairdresser and some of the conversations can have lasting effects. When it comes to my Next Chapter – I’ve always trusted Joe and his opinions - having seen how he is growing and developing his own business. So, I wanted to share his wisdoms with you.

From Communications to Highly Acclaimed Restaurateur: Nessa Bird

I’ll be honest I’ve been watching Nessa and her husband Freddy at work for a while now, they have a restaurant at the end of our road, and it’s been incredible and exciting to watch them open their neighbourhood bistro. But not only that, it’s now become a destination restaurant, appearing on national television and has been voted one of the top six best outdoor eating venues in the UK and has received rave reviews.

I knew Nessa’s story would be fascinating but I wasn’t quite expecting this.

Being brave and just taking that leap seems to have taken Nessa exactly where she is meant to be. She’s lived in different countries, left jobs when she knew they weren’t quite right for her and she’s trusted herself enough to take a deep breath and seize the day.

Then she met her husband and together they have built their own world for their family and for all of us around them, serving delicious food and wine.

Nessa speaks openly about life as a new mum, how they navigated Covid just weeks after opening and how they’re growing their other restaurant now, Littleshop. Plus, the story of how Nessa got together with Freddy is one of the loveliest stories I’ve heard in a long time. Nessa Bird is fun, humble and honest. Hard work, good food and determination have been the ingredients for a life Nessa loves - and she gives some brilliant advice if you are feeling a bit stuck.

S6 EP 3: From Clinical Neurophysiology to Romantic Comedy Author: Jill Mansell.

Jill Mansell writes romantic comedies and is on her 35thbook. (35th!) She’s sold over 14 million copies of her books all over the world. (14 million!) But what you may not know is that for 18 years Jill worked for the NHS in the field of Clinical Neurophysiology. Then everything changed all because of a magazine article.

Jill talks about swapping careers with a young baby, keeping going when the going gets tough – being asked if she’s friends with Madonna and what happened when she met her own heroine, Jilly Cooper.

It meant such a lot to be able to interview one of my own heroines and inspirations here on the Next Chapter. Jill is so humble and modest about her incredible achievements. She’s also open, warm and full of joy and hope… just like her books.

S6 Ep2: From Editorial Director of Sunday Times & Editor of Sunday Times Magazine to Founder of Noon: Eleanor Mills.

Eleanor Mills was the editorial director of The Sunday Times and editor of its magazine. She was the youngest features editor at The Telegraph at the age of 26. She was Chair of Women in Journalism, she’s interviewed pretty much everyone from Bob Hoskins to Mikhail Gorbachev and she had one of the biggest jobs in newspapers alongside life with her lovely husband and two daughters.

But after more than 20 years at The Times, in March 2020, as the world changed for all of us Eleanor was made redundant. She found herself lost, sitting on a bench with her friend, not knowing what to do next.

She went on to start Noon – which she describes as a platform helping women with the transition of midlife, whether it’s divorce, children leaving home, redundancy, marriage troubles, or yes, women just wanting a Next Chapter. Eleanor believes at 50 women are only half way through, we are going into our prime and this should be celebrated.

Eleanor is open, honest about just about all areas of life. Finding the right partner, being the only female trainee at The Telegraph, daughters, loss, how change can be tough – this conversation has it all. And she told me who the most memorable person she interviewed is (and I wasn’t expecting that at all).

S6 Ep 1: From BBC Breakfast and Channel 5 News to Psychologist: Dr Sian Williams

We're back!!! Series 6 of The Next Chapter and what a way to start.

Most of you will know Dr Sian Williams from either the sofa of BBC Breakfast or being the anchor for Channel 5 news, but she's done pretty much everything else too in radio and television - she’s been a journalist for more than 35 years. But what you might not know is behind the scenes and alongside her life in television, she was also training to become a psychologist. She is now a Dr, and although we will still have her on our televisions and radio, she has recently left her daily position at Channel 5 and is starting her Next Chapter as a psychologist for the NHS.

This conversation is one of my longest, but also I believe one of my most powerful yet - to be honest I didn’t want to take anything out from you – Sian is so generous with her stories, thoughts and advice. She talks about life as a journalist and how she came to be in front of the camera. She talks about the responsibility of telling people’s stories at the best and worst time of their lives. We also discuss how life changed for Sian one Christmas after a diagnosis of her own.

Although I also work in television, I've never met Sian before. When I started this podcast Sian was one of my dream guests to interview. So, in the spirit of Next Chapters, I decided to take the leap and message her - and she said yes - because that’s how much she believes in Next Chapters – not just hers, but yours too.

S5 Ep 6: From Construction to Shoe designer with own brand: Laura See

Laura See has always loved shoes and fashion. At school she thought about becoming a fashion journalist but life took her on a different path. She worked in construction, and although she liked her job, she never really loved it - and she never felt really fulfilled.

Then something awful happened. A life-changing event which made Laura’s world stop turning. In those difficult days she started sketching shoe designs as her therapy.

Laura saw how short life is - and so she applied for a design course in Florence in Italy and won a scholarship for it. She spent a year there learning shoe design. But when Laura returned, the hurdles continued. She received constant no’s from the industry for an apprenticeship. So, despite lots of people telling her not to, she started her own shoe brand. https://www.lauraseelondon.com/

Less than a year later, Laura’s shoes have been in a pop-up shop in John Lewis in Oxford and they’ve been featured in national magazines. Laura is doing all this around her day job back in construction, financing it all herself.

S5 EP 5: From Nightclub Owner to the Founder of The Bristol Loaf Bakery: Gary Derham

When you walk inside The Bristol Loaf bakery you may be forgiven this is what owner Gary Derham has always planned. But this is a story of Next Chapters leading to the Right Chapter.

Gary started off with a love of art and architecture at school, but working in a restaurant took him to bars and then his own nightclub, before going back to bars and then finally finding a way to combine all his loves.

He now employs more than one hundred staff at his bakery, it’s won national awards - and they even have a place in one of our biggest music venues in the South West – The Bristol Beacon. When they opened their flagship store, they had queues out the door for days.

Gary says 'sometimes we all need a lesson in how not to do it to be able to get it right.' He is truthful and open about what has gone well and what hasn’t. He is dedicated, hard-working and not afraid of carrying on when everything is going wrong. And with his team of bakers today – he sees the importance and effect of people doing what they love to do.

S5 EP 4: From Single Mum to Foster Carer of more than 100 teenagers: Andy Hider MBE

Andy was a single mum of three boys. She wanted to earn a bit of money, and one day saw an ad for foster carers. She decided it wasn’t for her. But then she changed her mind and thank goodness she did – because she went on to foster more than one hundred teenagers over the next 37 years.

There’s not much Andy Hider hasn’t seen or dealt with when it comes to teenagers. She’s had really tough times like being chased by a knife and she’s spent so many nights in the local police station she got to know the security codes. But Andy also says she wouldn’t change any of it. It was the best job she could ask for and she has helped transform the lives of so many. Two years ago Andy was awarded an MBE by the Queen after being nominated by one of her sons.

Andy has seen how difficult life can be but she believes everyone deserves a Next Chapter it’s always worth taking that first step towards something better. Andy Hider MBE is one of the most thoughtful, kindest and determined women I have interviewed as a journalist, and this is just the conversation needed to warm your soul.

S5 EP 3: From Housing Officer to Crime Fiction & Women’s Fiction Author (More than 1.8 million books sold) Mel Sherratt

Mel Sherratt grew up in Stoke and never believed she would actually ever be an author, even though she loved escaping into books. She worked as a housing officer and saw real-life in a way she’d never forget. This would later inspire the story lines in her books. After years of submitting to agents hoping to get a traditional publishing deal, Mel decided to do it herself and publish her own novels. After the first year she had sold more than two hundred thousand books. Agents came to her and she had the book deal she’d always wanted.

Her books have now sold more than 1.8 million copies. She writes crime books under her name and women’s fiction under the pen-name of Marcie Steele. She has had book deals with Thomas Mercer, Bookouture and Avon. But now, in another Next Chapter Mel has decided to publish her latest book Broken Promises by herself again, using everything she has learned during her years in the traditional world.

Angela Marson’s own story is worthy of a Hollywood film and it has more twists and turns than most crime novels. Angela (or Angie) loved writing as a child but never thought she could be an author. That’s what people from other worlds did. But as an adult Angela carried on writing around her day job, and she started submitting her books to agents. Then the rejections came, and came... and they kept coming for twenty-five years. But with the help of her partner Julie, every time she got knocked down, they found the strength together to get Angie back up again and carry on. And thank heavens they did because one day everything changed and now she has sold more than four million books.

I still can’t quite believe it but look who is opening series 5 of The Next Chapter. I’m not sure Eamonn Holmes needs much of an introduction, he’s one of our most loved household names. He’s presented pretty much everything from of course GMTV, This Morning, Sunrise, The National Lottery, Songs of Praise, Radio 5 Live the list continues, and now he’s just started his own Next Chapter presenting GB News.

Eamonn speaks openly and honestly about what life has really been like being one of our most well-known television stars, how his life growing up through the Troubles in Northern Ireland helped him become the journalist he is, and how he nearly missed out on telly life altogether.

I first met Eamonn during my own first chapter nearly twenty-five years ago when I was a runner at GMTV. All I wanted to do then was to be a television journalist, and Eamonn was my absolute hero. I remember the day I met him and I thought if I ever do become that journalist it would be my dream to interview him. It’s taken nearly a quarter of a century but I really hope you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

Laura Casey was enjoying a successful life in textile marketing, but she always felt she wanted more control over her career. After she had her two daughters, she decided to become a freelancer. She also started to design her own sewing patterns and began a blog, sharing her designs for free. Laura had no idea she was also beginning her own business but when she had 40,000 followers she realised she had to do something.

Laura now not only creates her own patterns, she runs sewing retreats and she has even designed her own fabric. Best of all, Laura wakes up in the morning and can decide what work she wants to do that day. Laura believes we don’t have to wait for perfection, we just have to start and improve from there. Laura is supportive, encouraging and hardworking. Sarah had just finished her job as a performing arts lecturer, she had a young family and wanted to spend more time with them, so was looking to start her next chapter. But then one morning everything changed. Sarah suffered a dreadful injury which left her lying on the floor in agony for the next year.

I’ll let Sarah tell you what happened but from these dark days, Sarah was able discover something which not only brought light and joy to her, but to many others too.

Sarah may work in the middle of nowhere, on Dartmoor in her studio, surrounded by glorious countryside. But she has built a huge following as her works connects to so many. Sarah believes in making work which celebrates simple joys.

Sarah is honest, open and full of passion for what she does – she believes we all have the answers inside of us, and it’s all about us staying true to who we are.

When a careers adviser said she’d never be a vet, well there was Jenny’s mission to prove them wrong. But since then Jenny has proved so much else wrong as well. A diagnosis in her 40s made her think there was something more to life. After much searching and honesty with herself, she became a Reverend. But did she give up being a vet? Of course Jenny didn’t. And yes, Jenny does wear her dog-collar to work. Jenny’s work is full of passion and joy, just like she is. She wants everyone know we are all in this together, whatever our beliefs.

Heidi Loughlin had what can only be described as an ‘eventful’ start in life. But any challenges or obstacles put in her way would not stop Heidi. In fact, she went on to use these experiences to fight gangs, help young criminals, and police riots and football matches for the Metropolitan Police.

Heidi was just about to start a Next Chapter of her own choice when life gave Heidi and her family a Next Chapter she could never have imagined. Pregnant with her third child, Heidi was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. She then had to make a choice nobody should ever have to make. Her life or her child’s? Her baby daughter Ally was born at twenty-eight weeks and one day. Five days later Ally died and Heidi faced having months to live.

But if you think this episode is going to be all bleak and depressing, well think again. Years later, Heidi's still here. You can't stop her booking holidays and she knows exactly how she wants to live her life. There are of course, some tough moments in this conversation. But there is also lots of laughter too. That’s the thing about these No Music Episodes, there are people like Heidi who will fill you with more hope, inspiration and joy than you could ever imagine - who will tell you, one day when you least expect it, the music will play again. Be warned though, there is swearing. But what do you expect from someone who took on all those gangs?

Jen Stanbrook describes her beginnings as working class, but the life she has designed for herself and her family is bound to make anyone from those roots of hers proud. And goodness, she has had several Next Chapters. From a graduate trainee in retail, to having her own cleaning business, back to the corporate world in IT, owning a franchise to ending up exactly where she was always meant to be... Writing her own interiors blog, Love Chic Living. This became hugely successful, winning awards and attracting a giant following, and Jen was invited all over the world to talk about her work. She is now a Digital Entrepreneur, and alongside many other roles, works as a Pinterest coach. (Her blog has had a million clicks from Pinterest alone.) And if this wasn’t enough, she’s now also helping women going through the perimenopause and menopause, steering them through all the hurdles and self-doubt which can come with this stage in life, helping them to achieve their dreams just like she has.
