Ms. Touma-Sliman discussed the passage of Israel’s new apartheid ‘Nation State’ law in the context of the growth of rightwing extremism in Israel’s domestic and foreign policy, and the efforts to resist this trend.

This was a rare opportunity to hear first-hand from someone who opposes Israeli state racism, apartheid and militarism from within the very corridors of power.

In July 2018 Israel passed the so-called ‘Nation State Law’, a racist law designed to officially assign second class status to Palestinian citizens of Israel, and to deny their claim to their homeland. It has been widely described and decried as enshrining apartheid inside the state of Israel, where previously Israel had sought to hide official discrimination behind a liberal veneer.

This slipping of the mask is just the latest in a long line escalating measures designed to marginalise Palestinians, whichever side of the Green Line they live on – from the shooting of unarmed protestors in Gaza, to the demolition of villages in the West Bank and Negev, to the crackdown on anti-occupation civil society groups. Meanwhile there has been an uptick in Israeli airstrikes in neighbouring countries and sabre-rattling against Iran and Lebanon. All of these are a legacy of the exponential growth of far right political parties and movements inside Israel over the past two decades, and the continued impunity which Israel enjoys abroad, something now amplified by Trump’s rise to power in the US.

About the speaker

Aida Touma-Sliman MK is a Palestinian member of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) where she heads the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality. She was elected in 2015 for the Joint List, the coalition of Arab and leftwing parties. She was born in Nazareth into a Christian Palestinian family and earned a B.A. in psychology and Arabic literature from the University of Haifa.

Touma-Sliman founded the Arab feminist group Women Against Violence in 1992.

She joined the Hadash party, later becoming editor-in-chief of Al-Ittihad, an Arabic language newspaper. She became the first female member of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel and co-founded the International Women’s Commission for a Just Palestinian-Israeli Peace. Israeli security forces pick them up on the street or at home in the middle of the night, then handcuff and blindfold them and transport them to interrogation, often subjecting them to violence en route. Exhausted and scared – some having spent a long time in transit, some having been roused from sleep, some having had nothing to eat or drink for hours – the minors are then interrogated. Completely alone, cut off from the world, without a lawyer or other guardian present they are interrogated in manner that often involves threats, verbal abuse and physical violence. Its sole purpose is to get the minors to ‘confess’ or provide ‘information’ about others.

They are then taken to the military court for a remand hearing. In the vast majority of cases, the military judges approve remand, even when the only evidence against the minors is their own confession. These military courts, which are only used to try Palestinians, have a 99.7% conviction rate and have been repeatedly criticised by human rights groups as failing to meet international standards for a fair trial. The facts and figures all demonstrate that the rights of Palestinian minors’ are being regularly and systematically violated by Apartheid Israel.

About the Speaker

Nery Ramati is an attorney and partner in Gaby Lasky and Partners Law Office, a leading human rights office in Israel, specializing in freedom of expression and protest, and Ahed Tamimi’s lawyers.

He has been representing Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights and anti-occupation activists in Israel’s military (Occupied Palestinian Territories) and civil (State of Israel) courts for almost a decade. Mr. Ramati has been representing leading human rights defenders and activists from the Palestinian villages of the popular struggle movement, such as Bi’ilin, Nabi Saleh, Beit Ummar, Qadom and others. One of his most important achievements is raising the awareness worldwide on the issues of the ill-treatment of the Palestinian minors (children) in the military court system.

Organised by Dublin branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign

Disclaimer: The views expressed in this podcast reflect the opinions of the speaker(s) only and do not reflect the views of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign unless otherwise explicitly stated.

Hosted on Acast.

This seminar examines how Jerusalem, contrary to the lived reality, is imagined as unitary and how it is presented as such to the international community. It looks at how tourism and archaeology have been used to create myths and to practice unseeing and denial of the very real borders within Jerusalem.
On Thursday 23rd February, as part of Israeli Apartheid Week 2012, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) was proud to present the Irish Premiere of the brand new film ‘Roadmap to Apartheid’ by film-makers Ana Nogueira & Eron Davidson.

The 90 minute documentary film, takes a look at the current situation in Palestine through the lens of South African Apartheid; comparing the two regimes in a manner not flattering for the Israeli state. It is narrated by US Civil Rights icon Alice Walker, and features interviews with many Palestinian, Israeli, South African and international activists, journalists and academics. The film was well received by the audience of over 60 people, even receiving an ovation at the end. The film is due to be released in the coming months and will be making appearances (and hopefully winning deserved awards) at various international film festivals. You can view the film trailer below, and if you missed it don’t worry, the IPSC will be organising future screenings of this brilliant film around the country.

Following the film, there was a discussion with Huwaida Arraf and Adam Shapiro (audio recording below), two of the founders of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) which promotes non-violent resistance to Israeli Apartheid. It was a wide ranging discussion that encompassed everything from Palestinian refugees to the ‘Arab Spring’.

Click here to download an audio recording of the Q&A with Adam Shapiro and Huwaida Arraf (mp3).
David Cronin (left), and David Landy of the IPSC

On Tuesday 26th July 2011, Irish author, journalist and activist David Cronin gave a talk on the subject of 'Palestine, Israel and the EU: How the European Union aids Israeli occupation and human rights abuses'. A crowd of around 50 people packed into the Pearse Centre to listen to the lecture, hosted by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

If you were unable to make it along, you can listen to an audio recording of the talk here:

Download MP3 Here (right click and 'save target/link as')

About the meeting:

In official statements, the EU presents itself as an honest broker in the Middle East. In reality, however, the EU and its member states have been engaged in a process of accommodating the Israeli occupation of Palestine. A recent agreement for “more intense, more fruitful, more influential co-operation” between the EU and Israel has meant that Israel has become an EU member state in all but name.

However, rather than using this relationship to pressure Israel to end its human rights abuses, the EU has legitimised actions such as the ill-treatment of prisoners and the Gaza massacre, while granting the Apartheid State preferential trading status and funding opportunities, and purchasing military items ‘battle-tested’ on the Palestinian people. The Greek government’s grounding of Freedom Flotilla II is just the latest outcome of this increasingly close “special relationship”.

David Cronin is the author of the explosive book Europe’s alliance with Israel: Aiding the Occupation, a journalist with many online and print publications, and the man who has attempted to make citizen’s arrests of both Tony Blair and Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
