Stephen Thompson, Jr. is a proud Morgan graduate and a walking business, but he's also a proud man of God. In addition to coining the phrase "Stephen SZN" and ultimately turning it into his own business, Stephen's faith has always been at the center of everything he does. It's why he felt inspired to start the Prayer Walk, a tradition at Morgan State that still gets done to this day before each fall semester, when students and organizations all across campus come together and walk to the center of campus to pray over the university. Stephen talks about how the idea came to be, and what makes being an alumni of Morgan State so special to him and to so many others.

T’ona McBride Puts On for North Carolina Central Football

The 2022 Cricket Celebration Bowl between Jackson State and North Carolina Central is the greatest HBCU football game I’ve ever seen. T’ona McBride, like me, was in Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. She was working as a member of the Eagles football team’s equipment staff at the time, and vividly remembers the feelings of vindication and joy she felt when her beloved Eagles pulled off the upset win over the Tigers after they were cast off as an afterthought in the game’s lead up. But T’ona’s love for NC Central extends far beyond just one game. On the newest episode of We See You, she sat down to explain what makes North Carolina Central special to her, being a witness to that 2022 Celebration bowl and why NC Central’s homecoming is an underrated gem.

Q Smith On The Beat: How Quinston Smith Built His Own Record Label

In 2008 at Prairie View A&M University, a young producer named Quinston Smith collaborated with his roomate Dorrough to produce the rap song Ice Cream Paint Job after turning their dorm room into a studio. He followed up with the hit Superstarr song "Halle Berry," and the rest is history. Today Smith, who goes by Q Smith On The Beat, has his own record label and continues to produce club bangers and songs that are cool to dance to. He spoke to We See You about his goals as a producer, touring with Lil Jon and LMFAO and producing one of Sexxy Red's biggest songs to date.

My grandfather Wally Ashby is not only my favorite Howard graduate, but one of the proudest HU grads I know. That oldhead pride is something different! My grandfather and I are like the same person; I consider him one of my best friends, which is why I always try to involve him in projects like this and why I could not wait to get this episode out. Wally attended Howard University from 1966-1970--right at the peak of the Civil Rigjhts Movement, the assassinations of MArtin Luther King and the Kennedys, the rise of the Black Power Movement and more. He attended classes with Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad. Revolutionaries like Kwame Toure and Queen Mother Moore would hold rallies on campus. Homecomings meant a chance to see the Temptations live in concert for FREE. On this very special family episode of We See You, Wally takes us inside the world of 1960s Howard University, and shows us why this institution is such a cultural force in the Black American experience.

Kalan Hooks Is A Marching Band Savant

There was the Russian invasion of Ukraine and all the outrage (Real and fake) that came with it. The passing of icons like Bill Russell and Pele, and the much more controversial Queen Elizabeth. There was the conviction of Tory Lanez, the continued downfall of Kanye and Kyrie and the Nets putting their foot in their mouths per usual. Oh, and Matthew Stafford finally won a Super Bowl. Happy Homecoming Week to all of my Morganites! This is the first of three installments of the "We Are the Bears and We're Coming Home" Homecoming Series!

To understand Morgan State University is to understand the city in which it resides: Baltimore, MD. Episode 1 aims to explore an area with culture as unique as any in America, as well as dissect the relationship between Morgan and Baltimore and how the two have consistently intertwined in the fight for black liberation--from persistence in the face if resistance by the all-white Lauraville community to their expansion in 1917 to the hundreds of Morgan students responsible for leading some of the nation's first organized sit-ins in the 1940s and '50s to the spirit of activism still alive in today's students as they've tackled issues of systemic racism, police brutality and inadequate state funding.

Happy Black History Month!

I told y'all that I had a special surprise up my sleeve for Black History Month, and after the last show I had to follow it up with something even bigger.

The latest Black History Month installment of The Play-By-Play Analysis is a special sit-down discussion with ,y grandparents, who went to Howard University right at the height of the Black Power and Civil Rights Movements in the 1960s. The topics of discussion include Stokley Carmichael, and how revolutions in black and brown nations around the world influenced his message, the difficulties of navigating the press as African-Americans and being in the midst of riots and violence in the aftermath of Martin Luther King's assassination in 1968. Of all the episodes I have done so far, this is the one I am the most proud of, so I truly hope you subscribe, tune in and enjoy, but most importantly, spread the word and share with friends and family!
