They spend their days engaged in games and creative projects that mirror hunting, tool-making, building, music, and dance, naturally developing the skills they will need in adulthood. Mixed-age play groups help them learn cooperation, empathy, negotiation, and self-control, while the culture as a whole values autonomy, sharing, and equality. Gray suggests that modern education could take inspiration from this model by creating more opportunities for children to learn through play and personal choice rather than through rigid, adult-led instruction.

New book alert! For the next couple months, we're reading Free to Learn by Peter Gray. We kick off this week with the Prologue and Chapter One. In the Prologue, Gray introduces his concern that modern schooling suppresses children's natural curiosity, playfulness, and drive to learn. He explains that his perspective shifted dramatically after witnessing how his own son thrived in a self-directed learning environment. In chapter one, "What Have We Done to Childhood?," Gray argues that modern society has drastically reduced children's freedom to play, explore, and pursue their own interests. He explains that increased schooling, adult control, and structured activities have led to a rise in anxiety, depression, and a decline in creativity and independence among children. Gray calls for a reevaluation of how we treat childhood, urging a return to more self-directed, play-based learning.

The Anxious Generation Episode 11

We're baaaaaack! In October we're reading The Heartbeat of Speech-Language Pathology by Phuong Lien Palafox. This book is written BY a speech-language pathologist FOR speech-language pathologists, and we're loving it. This week we cover the prologue and chapters one and two. We start out by discussing Phuong's family history and her journey to becoming an SLP. We cover the importance of knowing and reflecting on WHY you became an SLP. We discuss the good, the bad, and the reason when it comes to speech-language pathology. And finally, we go over the three tiers of evidence-based practice. The rest of the book will be focused on the importance of connection and honoring the values and perspectives of our clients and their families. We can't wait to share this special book with you.

Give them real apples to pick, cut, eat, paint with, mash, bake, and describe! Or don't even learn about apples! If it's not relevant or interesting to your preschool students, you shouldn't be teaching about it. Lisa Murphy is fired up in this chapter and we're loving it.

This week we're discussing chapters three and four from Lisa Murphy on Being Child Centered. Chapter three is called "Children Are Able to Explore the Environment with Few Restrictions, or You Really Don't Need a Lot of Rules." We discuss the idea of letting go of some rules we have in place, analyzing WHY we have the rules we have, and whether all of our rules are developmentally appropriate for the kids we work with. Chapter four is called "The Secret to Good Teaching, or Controlling the Environment Instead of the Children." This chapter is SO applicable to our work as SLPs. How many times have you had to tell kids "No" when they want to explore or play with something you have right there in the environment? Kids will be kids. Kids are curious. Set up the environment so you can say "Yes" more often. Lisa takes us through some various scenarios in the classroom where you can control the environment instead of the children. Lots of valuable information in these two short chapters, you're going to love this one!

The Knowledge Gap Episode 8

Today we're wrapping up The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. In chapter 12, "Scaling Up: Can It Be Done?," Natalie describes schools, districts, and states that are all working to overcome the knowledge gap. We discuss additional knowledge-rich curricula that are currently being used with good results. In the epilogue, Natalie concludes her book with her vision for the future and the direction she thinks our education system should take, noting that it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. We give our final thoughts on this book, especially how we'll be using what we've learned in the work we do as SLPs.

The Knowledge Gap Episode 7

This chapter tells the story of Judith Hochman, a curriculum coordinator at a school for children with learning disabilities who pioneered a way of teaching children to write that improved reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. We go over The Hochman Method, Lucy Calkins' writers workshop approach, and other frequently used writing instruction strategies. We also discuss how writing instruction applies to our work as SLPs. This week we're covering chapter nine from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler, "The Common Core: New Life for Knowledge, or Another Nail in its Coffin?" This chapter dives into the story of David Coleman, who was primarily responsible for the literacy standards in the Common Core. We discuss his love of close reading, his admiration for E.D. Hirsch, and his quest to integrate knowledge building and content into the Common Core Standards. Of course there was pushback, and we cover that all too. A lot of us have worked in schools where our speech and language goals have to be adapted to Common Core standards. This chapter gives us a lot of insight into where they came from and how we should really be addressing them in schools.

This week we're covering chapters seven and eight from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. We've started part two of the book: "How We Got Here: The History Behind the Content-Free Curriculum." In chapter seven, Natalie takes us through the history of child-centered education and teachers' aversion to teacher-directed, content-focused instruction. We discuss Rousseauian principles, social efficiency, the open-classroom movement, and the puzzling opposition to learning factual information. Chapter eight, "Politics and the Quest for Content," covers recent education reform and the failed attempt to create national history standards. Once again, we're discussing how politics have negatively impacted progress in education and we're not happy about it.

This week we're covering chapters five and six from The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler. Chapter five, "Unbalanced Literacy," is about the history of the balanced literacy movement, specifically the curriculum created by Lucy Calkins and the impact it had on education here in the United States (hint: it wasn't great). Chapter six is titled "Billions for Education Reform, but Barely a Cent for Knowledge" and we're pretty sure you can figure out what it's about. As Adrianne says, here come the billionaires! We talk about the history of education reform starting in the 1990s...where it's been on the right track and where it's failed. As always, we get a little worked up in this episode. The Knowledge Gap Episode 1

Throughout May and June, we are thrilled to discuss The Knowledge Gap by Natalie Wexler with you. If you're an SLP who works in schools, you're going to want to read this book! This week, we're starting with chapters one and two. Chapter one is called "The Water They've Been Swimming In" and covers the way educators are currently teaching children in schools. Natalie discusses the move toward teaching reading comprehension as a set of abstract skills and the move away from teaching social studies and science. She warns us about the impact of state-mandated testing on the way students are being taught. Chapter two, "A Problem Hiding in Plain Sight," presents us with the knowledge gap. Children from wealthier families are coming to school with an advantage in the amount of knowledge they've been exposed to, and reading comprehension depends greatly on background knowledge (not comprehension "skills"). These first two chapters have set the stage for what we know will be a great book. Our eyes are open and we're ready to learn more!

Hunt Gather Parent Episode 9

This week we're discussing the end of Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Chapter 15 is called "The Ancient Antidote for Depression." Michaeleen discusses her own postpartum depression and her realization that what she was missing early on in Rosy's life was community and support in the form of "alloparents." She gives us ways that we can create networks of support in our own communities to help combat the loneliness and isolation parents often feel. We cover the "M" in her TEAM parenting acronym: Minimal Interference. Michaeleen gives us examples of how she has cut down on interfering with Rosy's actions from moment to moment, focusing more on controlling their family's general schedule. Chapter 16 is simply called "Sleep" and Michaeleen describes how she ditched the bedtime routine in favor of a more natural approach in which Rosy chooses to go to bed when she's tired. We wrap up with the prologue, which is short and sweet. Hope you've enjoyed reading this great book with us!

Hunt Gather Parent Episode 7

This week we're covering chapters 11 and 12 from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. We kick off this episode with our thoughts on YouTube star Ms. Rachel (you might be surprised by how we feel), then we dive into the book. Chapter 11 is called "Tools for Sculpting Behavior: Stories" and it's a fun one. Michaeleen has fully embraced the idea of using stories to shape her daughter's behavior, including tales of monsters that live in the refrigerator, ceiling lights, heating vents, and outside in trees. We discuss how stories might be helpful for parents and SLPs. Next we get into chapter 12, "Tools for Sculpting Behavior: Dramas." This chapter describes acting out real scenarios that have taken place to teach children about their behavior. As always, we question some of Michaeleen's decisions, but in the end we enjoyed these chapters quite a bit.

Today we're discussing chapter ten from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. This chapter is an introduction to parenting tools and covers Michaeleen's tools for tantrums and tools for everyday behaviors. We discuss using calmness, physicality, and awe to transform behavior. We also discuss how to ignore bad behavior like the Inuit, and when we think that tool might not be appropriate. For everyday situations, we cover "the look," consequence puzzles, giving children responsibilities, and using questions to get kids thinking about their actions. This chapter is packed with tools Michaeleen picked up from Maya and Inuit parents. As always, we poke a little fun at Michaeleen and look for ways we can use these tips in speech therapy. Enjoy!

This week we're discussing chapters eight and nine from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Chapter eight explores the Inuit parenting approach of never yelling at children and instead speaking in a calm voice. The chapter emphasizes that yelling only hinders communication. Chapter nine delves into the author's personal experience of yelling at her own child and the struggle to control her anger at times. It highlights the importance of examining personal experiences and learning how to discipline without anger. In this conversation, we discuss the impact of yelling and anger on children, the importance of calmness in parenting, and the need to view children as young and inexperienced rather than manipulative. We explore the Inuit approach to parenting, which includes expecting children to misbehave, avoiding arguments with small children, and encouraging positive behavior instead of using force. The conversation highlights the importance of teaching children rational and logical behavior and provides insights into managing anger and shaping behavior.

This week we're discussing chapters six and seven from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Chapter six is called "Master Motivators: What's Better Than Praise?" We discuss the three ingredients needed to spark intrinsic motivation, and how praise might undermine it. We cover how simple acknowledgement can be a more powerful motivator than praise. We also cover Michaeleen's three steps for training a child to do anything: practice, model, and acknowledge. Chapter seven is called "Never in Anger" and introduces us to the Inuit, a tribe living near the Arctic Circle. Michaeleen describes them as calm, emotionally regulated, and as masters of executive functioning. We're excited to learn more about the Inuit in the coming chapters!

This week we're covering chapter five and TEAM 1 from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Chapter five is titled, "How to Raise Flexible, Cooperative Kids." We discuss the importance of making a child a member of your team and emphasizing how valuable their contributions to the family are. We also discuss ways to reduce the amount of "child-centered" activities you do (Laura has an issue with that phrasing) in favor of including children in the everyday activities and routines of the family. This chapter is a must-read for any parents who are exhausted from driving kids to lessons and activities, preparing special meals, and constantly cleaning up after everyone. We can raise flexible, cooperative kids by valuing their natural inclination towards helpfulness and including them in all family activities. In TEAM 1, we discuss the "T" in Team Parenting: Togetherness. As a bonus, we start this episode with a discussion of continuing education in speech-language pathology. We take a look at ASHA CEUs versus other types of continuing education and discuss how we like to fulfill the requirements for ASHA and our state licenses.

This week we're discussing chapters two, three, and four from Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. Where do our current parenting practices come from? In chapter two, we take a look at the origins of things like sleep training and feeding schedules. You'll be surprised when you hear where they came from and how long they've been around. We also discuss whether toys are really as beneficial for children as we think they are, whether we praise children too much, and why we're constantly trying to crowbar learning into every experience a child has. In chapter two, Michaeleen travels to the Yucatan Peninsula to spend time with a Maya family and learn acomedido. In chapter four, she describes specific strategies for teaching children how to be acomedido, that is, how to teach children to be helpful and do chores voluntarily.

Hunt Gather Parent Episode 1

We're starting a new book for March and April: Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D. To write this book, the author lived with Mayan families in Mexico, Inuit families from above the Arctic Circle, and Hadzabe families in Tanzania. From these families, she learned a universal way of parenting that produces kind, generous, helpful children. She documents how she used the techniques she learned with her own young daughter, completely transforming their parent-child relationship. Today we're discussing the prologue and chapter one. We cover what led Dr. Doucleff to write this book, the helpful children she observed in a Mayan village, how traditional western parenting styles are failing our children (and are not the norm), and the impact of the Catholic church on the modern nuclear family here in the United States. As a bonus, we start this episode with a long discussion about ASHA's recent update on the 2025 dues increase.

Age of Opportunity Episode 8

This week we're covering chapter ten and the conclusion from Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. Chapter ten is called "Brains on Trial" and discusses the way we handle adolescents in the legal system here in the United States. We go over how attraction to immediate rewards and difficulty weighing consequences leads to impulsive (sometimes criminal) behavior in adolescence. We discuss specific cases when adolescents have committed crimes and end up spending many years or a lifetime in prison. We talk about the history of the legal driving age and drinking age (which is pretty fascinating). Finally, we wrap things up by discussing the conclusion and our final thoughts on the book. Enjoy!

This week we're covering chapter seven from Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. This chapter is called "How Parents Can Make a Difference." It's a chapter about parenting, but it applies to us as SLPs and educators! In this episode, we go over the characteristics of caregivers that are most likely to lead to strong self-regulation skills in children. Parents (and educators) need to be warm, firm, and supportive in order for children to thrive. We discuss the three main styles of parenting: autocratic, permissive, and authoritative. Authoritative parents are warm and caring, consistent and fair with rules, and provide appropriate support as the child develops. Authoritative parenting leads to children who are motivated, secure, and successful. At the end of this episode, we discuss how this information about parenting can be applied to the work we do as SLPs.

We discuss some statistics related to adolescent behavior, deterring risky behavior, the peer effect, and how the social brain impacts the way adolescents think and behave. Chapter six is called "The Importance of Self-Regulation." We go over research that has been done to test self-regulation skills and the impact they have across the lifespan. In particular, we discuss the famous marshmallow test and Dr. Steinberg's Now or Later test. We also cover self-regulation during adolescence, determination, grit, noncognitive skills, motivation, and self-control. These chapters impacted us quite a bit. We discuss phases in the development of the adolescent brain, the pursuit of pleasure, how the prefrontal cortex develops and works, and differences we see across cultures in adolescents. Uniquely Human Episode 7

This week we're discussing chapter 10 from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant. This chapter is called "The Long View" and describes the stories of multiple autistic people and their families from early childhood through young adulthood. This chapter is filled with hopeful stories about families overcoming adversity and persevering. It tells of some professionals who made a world of difference, and some who needed to be left behind. This chapter can help us, as SLPs, understand that each family is different and has its own set of values and priorities. We also discuss the importance of disclosure and how to approach the topic with parents when they are opposed to speaking with their children about autism. We hope you enjoy our discussion!

Uniquely Human Episode 6

This week we're discussing chapters eight and nine from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant. Chapter eight, "Wisdom from the Circle" is really a chapter for parents, but we can get so much out of it in terms of perspective. All families handle autism differently and we need to have empathy, support them in an understanding way, and join them on their journey. This chapter is full of advice for parents about who to surround themselves with, what to put their time and effort into, and when to ignore the opinions of others. In chapter nine, "The Real Experts," Dr. Barry describes three of his friends, autistic adults who are making a big impact in the autism world. They each have a different perspective to offer, and we learned a lot from their stories.

This week we're discussing chapter seven from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant: "What it Takes to 'Get It.'" This might be one of our favorite episodes of The SLP Book Club podcast yet, because it really gets to the heart of what it means to be a speech therapist, teacher, or other provider who works with autistic children. There are some people who just naturally get it: they pay attention, provide support as needed, demonstrate flexibility, and are a regulating factor for the children they work with. Other people might not naturally have "it," but they work hard to learn all they can and support autistic children and their families. And then, unfortunately, some people just don't have or get it. They focus on taking back control, sticking to a plan, and compliance without consideration for what the child really needs. Our discussion of this chapter was very personal, with lots of examples from our own work that we hope you can relate to. Enjoy :)

Uniquely Human Episode 4

This week we're discussing chapters five and six from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant. We start with chapter five: Emotional Memory. We learn about the impact emotional memory can have on all of us, but especially on people with autism. We discuss how emotional memory is tied to behavior, and how anything can be a trigger for a memory that has a big impact on a child. Dr. Prizant gives us strategies for helping children cope with emotional memories, including providing them with enough positive memories around a trigger that it lessens the impact of that trigger. Next we discuss chapter six, "Social Understanding." We cover how challenging it can be for children with autism to learn social rules and read social situations. We discuss the limitations of teaching social rules, the importance of directness, how misunderstandings can lead to stress, and how to help children understand and express emotions. These are great chapters that have really helped us build on our understanding of autism in general. That concludes part one of the book, and next week we'll start part two when we read chapter seven. See you then!

This week we're covering chapter four of Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant. This chapter is about trust, fear, and control in autism. Dr. Prizant describes autism as a disability of trust. He describes how difficult it can be for people with autism to have trust: trust in their own bodies, trust in the world around them, and trust in other people. He describes the impact that fear can have on children with autism, and how to help them overcome that fear. We discuss control and how it's a response to fear and anxiety. Uniquely Human Episode 2

This week we're covering chapters two and three from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant. Chapter two is called "Listen" and it covers the many ways children with autism communicate, including using echolalia. Dr. Prizant encourages us to listen closely and honor all attempts at communication. He describes the many functions of echolalia and scripting, which include not only expressing wants and needs, but also self-regulating. Chapter three is called "Enthusiasms" and we love this way of describing what some might call "restricted interests" or "obsessions." Dr. Prizant describes many of the enthusiasms he has observed in the children he's worked with, and how dedicated, observant parents, teachers, and service providers have encouraged them and used them to further engage children in learning. Please note, we laugh during this episode as we discuss the enthusiasms of some of our previous students but we are never laughing at them. We love, respect, and appreciate the interests of every child we work with but think it's important to find and celebrate humor in what we do.

Today we're discussing chapter three of Beyond Behaviors by Dr. Mona Delahooke. This chapter is about understanding how individual differences contribute to observable behaviors. We cover how the physical body, sensory system, thoughts, and feelings impact the way a child behaves. Dr. Delahooke gives us real examples of children she worked with in each category, which gives us a really clear picture of where bottom-up and top-down behaviors come from. We also discuss children who are sensory over-reactive, sensory under-reactive, and sensory craving. Reading about these profiles really changed the way we think about some of the children we've worked with in the past. We hope you learn as much from this chapter as we did!

Beyond Behaviors Episode 2

Today we're covering chapter two of Beyond Behaviors by Dr. Mona Delahooke. Chapter two is titled, "Top Down or Bottom Up?" This chapter explains how to understand the origin of behavior before we try to respond to it. We discuss top-down behaviors that are the result of thoughtful intent, and bottom-up behaviors that are unintentional stress responses. We also cover the stages of social-emotional development and how important it is to determine exactly where a child is in his/her development. Finally, we go over the pathways of the autonomic nervous system that help us determine a child's autonomic state in real time. When children are on the green (ventral vagal) pathway, they are in a calm state and can play, communicate, and learn. When children are on the red (sympathetic nervous system) pathway, they are highly activated and experiencing a fight-or-flight response. When children are on the blue (dorsal vagal) pathway, the body is responding to cues of extreme danger and will shut down. Understanding these pathways has really helped us to view the behavior of certain students from the past in a new way. We hope you learn something new from this episode!

Beyond Behaviors Episode 1

Throughout September and October, we'll be reading Beyond Behaviors by Dr. Mona Delahooke. Today, we're kicking things off with the introduction and chapter one. In the introduction, Dr. Delahooke explains why she wrote this book. In over 25 years working as a child psychologist, she observed that traditional approaches to treating challenging behaviors were repeatedly failing children who needed her help the most. She recognized that the brain-body connection and a child's individual needs and differences had to be considered when treating disruptive behaviors. Her work has been influenced by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Polyvagal Theory, and the concept of neuroception. She has also been heavily influenced by Dr. Serena Wieder's childhood developmental stages. In chapter one, we discuss how behaviors are actually adaptive responses to the way a child experiences his environment. They serve a purpose for that child, and it is our job to look below the surface and figure out what is causing them. We talk to Meghan about her career as a speech-language pathologist, which has included working in multiple settings before opening her private practice, Tiny Talkers Nashville. Meghan describes how she created the Tiny Talkers group format as a way to provide accessible speech, language, and social skills support to young children. The structure of Meghan's private practice has allowed her to have more flexibility in her work and time with her family at home. For two years, Meghan developed a curriculum for Tiny Talkers groups that can be replicated by other speech therapists who use her program. Today we're covering chapters 14 and 15 from Lisa Murphy on Play: The Foundation of Children's Learning by Lisa Murphy. In chapter 14, "Make Time Each Day to...OBSERVE," we discuss incorporating the five senses into all the activities you do with children. We cover the many ways you can explore through touch, including a plethora of ideas for sensory bins. Lisa goes into the importance of human touch, and how devastating it is that many programs discourage the staff from touching students at all. We cover the "mute" sense, smell, which is so hard to describe in words but is intimately linked to memory. Lisa says your room should be filled with beautiful smells like coffee, cinnamon, cookies, and vanilla, rather than cleaning products. We discuss observing through listening, and Lisa gives us ideas for activities like, "Listen, what's that sound?" We cover taste, including letting kids taste different foods if they're interested, encouraging families to send leftovers to school, having picnics, and more. And of course, we cover observing through sight. Lisa writes about how to decorate a classroom to make it visually pleasing for your students, how to encourage observation with and without words, and setting up experiments for your students to observe and discuss. Chapter 15 is "Make Time Each Day to...READ." We discuss the fact that reading should go on at all times of the day, in all areas of the school. Not just in the reading corner or during circle time. Lisa describes how to pick books for your program and how to teach children to respect them. And above all else, she tells us that if we want children to love to read, they have to see us reading. That's right SLPs, this chapter is for us! We discuss how children learn language, the way children basically think out loud until they're seven years old, and the idea that we don't really have to respond to everything children say. Then we go through Lisa's "Discussion Destroyers" and they really gave us some food for thought. They include asking questions you already know the answer to, disregarding a child's response, saying "Someone already said that," and asking "fake" questions. We also go over Lisa's strategies for modeling language, social skills, and problem-solving for children. This chapter is really about building a solid foundation of social-emotional learning, which will lead to later success in school and life. It was such a great chapter, and we hope you enjoy our discussion of it!

In this episode, we're covering chapters 11 and 12 of Lisa Murphy on Play: The Foundation of Children's Learning by Lisa Murphy. We start with chapter 11, "Make Time Each Day to...MOVE." We discuss the importance of both big and small motor movements for children, the tragedy of schools and districts that do away with recess, addressing different styles of learning (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), ADHD and medication, and movement activities you can be doing with your students right now. Chapter 12 is "Make Time Each Day to...SING." We get super nostalgic as we remember the songs we listened to when we were young. What songs did you learn as a child? Who taught them to you? And who are you teaching them to now? If the answer is "no one" then maybe that needs to change! Lisa says you should be learning and practicing great children's songs that you can sing with your students, and she provides a list of some of her favorites. This episode was so much fun to create because these were topics we really loved. Hope you enjoy it!

This chapter is called "Make Time Each Day to Create," and it's all about art and creativity. We discuss how art projects have essentially become a receipt for childcare, showing parents what their children accomplished each day. But what about kids who are creative in ways that aren't considered art? What about kids who love to build with blocks? Or make mud pies? When we force children to make cookie cutter reproductions of the craft of the day, is that really art? So we have to ask ourselves, who is the art for? If it's not for the children, then don't do it. We go through Lisa's tips for enhancing creativity and her list of creativity killers. This is a great episode that will really get you thinking about the way you approach art and creativity with the children you work with.

We've got a new book we're reading for the summer! Grab a copy of Lisa Murphy on Play: The Foundation of Children's Learning and make sure to follow along with us this summer. We chose this book because obviously as SLPs, we know how important play is. But are we really playing with the kids we work with? Are we allowing them to create, explore, move, sing, and discuss things that spark their interests? Are we following their lead and allowing them to fall in love with learning? Lisa Murphy presents an argument for play being essential for school readiness. She pushes back against cookie-cutter curriculum, worksheets, and art projects where every child is expected to copy the teacher. This book will remind you of the type of play you probably engaged in as a kid, and how it sparked curiosity and wonder. It is an excellent book for early intervention, preschool, and elementary speech therapists! In this first episode we cover the introduction and chapters 1-4 of the book. We'll discuss Lisa's backstory, including her own experience as a preschooler, her journey to becoming a teacher, and her decision to open her own school out of her home. Enjoy!

The Seeds of Learning Episode 3

We're continuing our discussion of The Seeds of Learning by Tera Sumpter, M.A., CCC-SLP with chapters five and six. Chapter five covers assessment using Tera's cognitive processing model as a framework. We discuss how to assess speech development, phonological processing, language development, literacy, writing, math, and executive functioning. We get into what a comprehensive assessment similar to the one suggested in the book might look like in the school setting, including a multidisciplinary approach to assessment that might involve the speech-language pathologist, classroom teacher, RSP teacher, reading coach, and psychologist. Tera briefly explains her treatment approach using the cognitive ladder in chapter six. We discuss starting treatment by meeting a child where they currently are, then slowly and gradually increasing the cognitive load. We can't wait for Tera's next book, which will cover treatment more in depth!

Chapter three covers executive functioning and how it impacts speech, language, learning, and pretty much every single task a person will ever perform. Tera goes over how weaknesses in executive functioning impact the assessments we do, making it difficult to tease out where the deficits truly lie. She also explains that pragmatic language is a function of the executive functioning system, which is why children with executive functioning deficits often struggle with social skills. Chapter four of the book is about application of Tera's cognitive processing model in the school setting. Today we're wrapping up our May book, Take Time for You: Self Care Action Plans for Educators by Tina H. Boogren. We start out the episode by discussing an SLP hot topic: scope of practice vs. scope of competence. Speech therapists are expected to treat a wide range of differences and disorders, from language delays and speech sound disorders to aphasia and swallowing. But are you comfortable admitting when something is beyond your scope of competence? Do you refer out to a specialist, ask for help, or just throw yourself into the research and figure it out when you're faced with a student or client who you don't know how to treat? We give our thoughts on the topic, then we finish up our month of self-care by discussing the conclusion of the book. We got through practical ways to implement self-care strategies for school speech therapists. We hope you enjoyed this month's book!

Smart but Scattered Episode 1

The Loving Push Episode 8: Conclusion
