Orla O’Brien, who has been living with Lyme disease for the past six years, joined the Tommy Marren Show on Midwest Radio to speak about the devastating impact the illness has had on her daily life.

She shared how she experiences relentless fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, widespread pain, tremors, recurring infections, heart palpitations, brain fog, and severe post-exertional crashes — with even simple tasks like washing her hair sometimes leaving her bedridden for up to two days.

Orla also spoke about a fundraiser that has been launched with the hope of raising €80,000 to allow her to travel to Cyprus for specialist treatment focused on addressing Lyme disease.

Joanna McNulty

On the 18th of February, Joachim McNulty tragically lost his life with his car slipped on algae at Belderrig Pier in Co Mayo. Now his daughter Joanna McNulty is calling for measures to be put in place urgently for all piers and slipways in Co Mayo to prevent this from happening to anyone else. Joanna spoke with Tommy Marren on air this morning.

LONELINESS AND ISOLATION - FARMING COMMUNITY

On Tuesday morning, the Tommy Marren Show investigated loneliness and isolation within the farming community. We spoke to a number of contributors to try and identify why farmers are so impacted by loneliness and isolation.

Our guests included local farmers Martin Peyton and Mark Devane, full time beef farmer and former VP of Macra as well as Farm Safety Champion with Irish Rural Link, Mona O'Donoghue Concannon who is Interim chair of Women in Agriculture Stakeholder Group and member of the ICSA and students from St Mary's College in Ballysadare Hannah Milanzie and Izabella Lehany McGoldrick. Over the last few months and alongside their teacher Siobhan Brennan, they have been working hard the past few months on a project which helps to tackle isolation amongst farmers.

Shane O'Brien and Laura Niepage - Parkinson's Ireland

Tommy Marren was joined on air this morning by Chief Executive Officer of Parkinson's Ireland Shane O'Brien and Parkinson's nurse specialist Laura Niepage. Parkinson's Ireland are introducing an in person Parkinson’s nurse service to support people living with Parkinson’s in the region, which has been identified as an area with limited access to specialist care.

There are currently over 18,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Ireland, and this service aims to bridge a significant gap in local support by offering expert clinical care, education and guidance closer to home.

Cormac Rowland and Roger Murray (Callan Tansey) speaking on Patrick Rowland

On January 15th 2023, 69-year-old, Patrick Rowland from Lahardane, was admitted to Mayo University Hospital with pneumonia and sepsis. Two days later, Patrick's body was recovered from a waterway outside Castlebar town after Mr Rowland absconded from the hospital.

Last month, the family of Patrick Rowland received an apology from Mayo University Hospital following a mediation process. Patrick Rowland's son Cormac and Senior Counsel Roger Murray (Callan Tansey Solictors) joined Tommy Marren on air to discuss the tragedy and what lessons can be learned.

Today, Tuesday the 10th of February, marks Safer Internet Day. The theme for Safer Internet Day 2026 is “AI Aware: Safe, Smart and in Control” which is encouraging us all to consider how AI shapes young people’s lives. CEO of Hotline.ie Mick Moran joined Tommy Marren on air to discuss his views on this. He also spoke candidly about the impact mobile phone are having on children and how parents must also control their screentime to set a good example to their children.

The Irish Internet Hotline (or www.hotline.ie) is the Irish national reporting centre where members of the public can securely, anonymously, and confidentially report concerns in respect of illegal content online, especially child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The removal of child sexual abuse images and videos from the Internet is the core of their work.

Tommy Marren was joined live in studio by husband of Brenda Grealis Peter and on the line by friend and fundraiser organiser Caroline Murnane. A GoFundMe page has been set up on behalf of Mayo musician Brenda Grealis who has been diagnosed with PERM Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). Progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus (PERM), is a more severe variant of Stiff Person Syndrome, which is a rare and serious neurological condition. It affects the brain and spinal cord causing severe muscle stiffness, painful spasms and increasing loss of mobility and function. Unfortunately, because this illness is so rare, treatment options are limited, ongoing and challenging. Many people in Mayo will know Brenda Grealis as a gifted singer, harpist, pianist, flautist and guitarist. She has spent her life bringing comfort and joy to others through her music.

Jason Poole - Jennie's Law

This morning brother of Jennifer Poole and key representative of the campaign Jason Poole joined Tommy Marren on the show to discuss the Jennie's Law campaign. Jennie's Law is advocating for the creation of a Domestic Abuse Register in Ireland. In 2021 Jennifer Poole lost her life when she was stabbed to death by her ex partner. Jennifer's ex partner had been convicted for the assault of his former partner but she was not aware of his abusive history. David Maguire - Prostate cancer journey

Still in his 40s David is considered young to have gotten this diagnosis.

Support Shannon Lynch's Journey to Recovery

This morning on the Tommy Marren Show, Mary Cattigan the aunt of 11 year old Shannon Lynch from Achill told her niece's story and a fundraising page that has been set up.

On the 15th February 2025, a couple of weeks after her 11th birthday, Shannon took very ill at her home in Cashel, Achill Island and was rushed to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar where it was quickly discovered that she had a substantial bleed on the right hand side of her brain.

She was immediately rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin where the surgeon and his team were waiting to take her to theatre. After a lengthy operation, they eventually succeeded in stopping the bleed and Shannon spent 11 days in ICU recovering. She is continuing her recovery in St.Gabriels Ward in Temple Street at present.

Shannon will have to undergo another operation in Beaumont Hospital on the 4th of April to remove the AVM on the brain that caused the bleed as there is a risk of another bleed especially within the year. She will recover from this operation in ICU Temple Street Children's Hospital before returning to St.Gabriels Ward for further recovery and rehabilitation.

Laura Mitchell - Turning Plastic Waste into Opportunity

Laura Mitchell, a final-year Economics student at University College Dublin, is taking part in an upcoming volunteer project in Uganda.

This June, she will be traveling to Masaka, Uganda, for four weeks to volunteer with EcoBrixs as part of the UCD Volunteering Overseas (UCDVO) program. EcoBrixs, a non-profit organisation established in 2017, is dedicated to addressing plastic waste by transforming it into sustainable building materials. In addition to tackling pollution, the organisation provides employment opportunities to over 3,000 local collectors, with 50% of its workforce comprising women and individuals with disabilities.

During her time in Uganda, Laura will be working directly at the EcoBrixs upcycling center, contributing to the production of sustainable building materials such as their innovative plastic-sand composite pavers, which are stronger, lighter, and more durable than concrete. She will also be engaging with some of EcoBrixs’ 56 partner schools, educating students on local circular economies and recycling while promoting the "Plastic for Education" initiative.

Volunteering abroad has been a long-held aspiration for Laura, inspired by stories from her grandmother at a young age. The opportunity to participate in this project is particularly meaningful to her. To support EcoBrixs and its mission, she has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a fundraising goal of €1,550, with all proceeds going directly to the organization. She is personally covering her own expenses, including flights and vaccinations.

Lainey is planning to run 100 miles in one day to raise money for two charities in memory of her beloved parents Eileen and Richard. Lainey is raising money for Mayo Roscommon Hospice and SHOUT (Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust) as she wants to give back to the people that cared for her parents before they passed. This morning Tommy Marren was joined by Lynda McNally co-owner of LS Hair Westport. Lynda had previously joined Tommy Marren on Friday's show to inform him of an incident that had occurred. LS Hair Westport is located in the Mill Street Carpark in Westport. There are no footpaths outside and cars pass right by the salon. Last Thursday a car hit a bollard, smashing the window of the salon and just missing a client. As a result the staff decided that they could no longer continue on in such conditions. The issue was raised at Mayo County Council's meeting last night. Lynda joined Tommy with the update on the situation. You can hear what Lynda had to say here.

Proposals are currently being formulated for a Relief Road Scheme that will serve to address traffic and transport needs at Cong Village by Mayo County Council in association with Galway County Council and the Department of Transport. Michael D, Sinéad and Aisling were also joined by Ballinrobe-based councillor Michael Burke who spoke on the issue. Cllr Michael Burke also later confirmed that the closing date for comments or observations in respect to the proposed scheme had been extended to February the 21st. Tommy spoke with ATU Lecturer and Director of 'Neuroplasticity Research Group', Dr. Kenneth Monaghan and Stroke Survivor, PJ Wymbs, about the innovative usage of mirrors in recovery therapy for Stroke Victims. Dr Monaghan is a lead speaker at ATU's conference on stroke and neurological health, which is taking place on Monday the 4th of November from 2-5pm. Information Appeal on Westport Dog Attack

The Monaghans don't Miss School

We think this must be a record for Ballinrobe and Ireland! Róisín, Aoibhín and Micheál Monaghan from Knockgloss, Ballinrobe have all completed primary school education at Roxboro National School and secondary school in Ballinrobe Community School without missing a single day!

The record was completed last Tuesday when Micheál (the youngest of the three) completed his last day in Ballinrobe Community School ahead of his Leaving Cert in a couple of weeks time.

A proud day for all three and their parents Michael and Ann. Tommy Marren spoke to Róisín, Aoibhín and Micheál on Midwest Radio this morning to find out more about this amazing achievement.

Daniel McSweeney - Mother & Baby Home

In May of 2023 Minister for Children Minister Rodrick O Gorman appointed Daniel McSweeney to oversee excavation at former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam so that the sensitive work of ensuring the children’s remains at the Tuam site are recovered and re-interred in a respectful and appropriate way. It is believed some 796 babies and young children were buried in a sewage system on the site between 1925 and 1961.

This week Daniel joined Tommy Marren in studio to give an update on his work to date and how his plans are progressing in Tuam.

Parking & traffic - Tubbercurry residents outline concerns over town redevelopment

An investment of over €5 million is on its way to South Sligo capital Tubbercurry as part of a redevelopment of the town.

The main area of redevelopment is that of Wolfe Tone Square, with a more pedestrian friendly facility, less parking spaces, a one way system on one side of the square, and a bus stop shelter and plaza among other planned works.

However, there are residents and business people on the square in Tubbercurry that are against certain aspects of the works.

These in particular, are in relation to the loss in parking spaces which they feel will be detrimental to their businesses, and the change in traffic flow which they believe will lead to further congestion.

Midwest News Reporter Rian Bailey spoke to people on both sides of the argument, including local Fine Gael Councillor Martin Connolly, Chairperson of the Tubbercurry Town Team Joann Hosey, Spokesperson for the Save Our Square Group Mary Barry, local resident Gail Cretaro, and Peter Wynne whose family butchers has been located on the square for many years.

Plans can be viewed in person at Teach Laighne in Tubbercurry and at City Hall in Sligo Town.

The closing date for submissions from the public as to what they like or want to change to the plans, or any input must be in by February 22.

World Mental Health Day

October the 10th is world mental health day, to mark this important day the Tommy Marren Show this morning was a two hour special on the topic of mental health. Speakers such as Elaine Browne from perspective joined Tommy in studio, as did author of the book 'Bipolar - High Life Low Life' Liam Gildea. People that have suffered from various mental health issues in the past also spoke with Tommy on the show giving their perspective on life.
