Why are we afraid of AI?

We are joined by, Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic currently the Chief Talent Scientist at Manpower Group, co-founder of Deeper Signals and Metaprofiling, and Professor of Business Psychology at University College London and Columbia University. He's written over 150 scientific papers and 10 books on the psychology of talent, leadership, innovation, and ai, including his new book, iHuman AI Automation, and the Quest to reclaim what makes us unique.

The globe is bringing so many questions to the table about how society's going to function moving forward, and how AI will play a huge part in that for better or for worse. The main question seems to be should we be afraid of AI or does AI come in peace?

AI is a prediction machine that identifies hidden patterns in large datasets and continuously improves itself. AI is commonly experienced through recommendation algorithms in everyday life, such as music streaming services and social media platforms. We explore why some people, including older workers, may fear AI and that concerns are often fuelled by sensationalist media stories and depictions of AI in popular culture. However, Dr Tomas emphasises that humans are still in control and most AI applications aim to simplify tasks and free up time for more creative pursuits. Tomas shares advice on how to stay informed about AI developments and how AI platforms like GPT can provide valuable insights.

In our conversation we delve into the potential of AI in talent acquisition and HR. Tomas highlights the opportunity to leverage AI for increased fairness and meritocracy in organisations. AI can help identify and close the gap between individual performance and career success. However, Tomas acknowledges that biases can still exist in AI systems and emphasises the importance of striving for improvement rather than perfection. Regarding future skills, Tomas suggests focusing on human traits that AI is less likely to master, such as empathy, kindness, self-awareness, critical thinking, and deep curiosity. These skills will be in demand as humans continue to interact with AI in the workplace. He also encourages organisations to think differently about diversity, including neurodiverse talent, to maximize the benefits of AI.

Babcock’s locations are mostly further afield than your higher concentrated cities i.e., London, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. The challenge Babcock faced is that it is hard to draw in such specialised talent in those areas. Alongside graduate intakes, apprentice intakes, direct recruitment, and utilisation of contingent and agency staff, Babcock had to try something different and complimentary: Train to Fit.

Businesses may think of a brand as the face of the organization to a consumer. But increasingly, it’s important to present a brand that appears to job seekers as well. Think of candidates as online shoppers: they read reviews, want an engaging experience, want to be treated with respect and their feedback is key to improving the hiring process.

For example, a few years ago, Virgin Media calculated the value of bad candidate experience, and the results were astonishing – bad candidate experience cost Virgin Media almost 5 billion pounds annually. As the analysis had shown, rejected candidates were also Virgin Media’s consumers and they decided to switch their subscriptions to competitors.

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” and it celebrated the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the gaps that still remain – and there are still many.

Throughout the podcast, we ask what is “shecession”; why language is so important; what are the strategies that women could use to assert themselves in their careers; what is sponsorship and how is it different from mentorship; why are there some sectors less gender diverse than others and what more can be done to close that gap; why more women aren’t progressing into executive positions; do men and women really lead differently and, how to win a salary negotiation (hint: go for it!)!

In this episode, we ask Kayleigh Kuptz, Co-founder and COO at Deployed, and Sana Ali, EMEA Service Procurement Manager at Talent Solutions TAPFIN, how Statement of Work (SoW) can help organizations succeed in the post Covid-19 economy.

Kayleigh sums it up really well by explaining that “the job for life is dead: you don’t hire for people anymore, you hire for services and outcomes and SoW enables that flexibility and agility” needed in today’s world of work – SoW is one of the largest categories of spend for an organization and has increased 21% year-over-year, representing 3 to 6 times the spend of contingent labour.

This rapid growth is primarily fuelled by the rise of the gig workforce, who look to maintain their independence and desire flexible working arrangements while organizations want to shift risk, maintain quality and control costs by moving to outcome-based solutions.

With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the overnight (and now long term) shift to remote work and the growing urgency for organizations to digitize, never before has organisational agility been tested in such extreme and accelerated circumstances.

Cancer survivors not only deserve a fair chance while applying for jobs but are also able to bring adaptability and perseverance to the workplace in addition to their normal qualifications. To ensure equal opportunities and change perceptions of cancer in the workplace, the social enterprise oPuce and a network of large companies in the Netherlands launched the Talent Connector, which empowers job seekers who have recovered from cancer by connecting them directly to dedicated recruiters.
