• Build an email list. This is the key to your marketing.

Yes, you can! 

But I don’t recommend it. There is a myth thrown around you can throw some blog post together and call them a book. However, I don’t agree with this idea. You write a blog in a short direct format for a particular audience about a specific subject. I have learned some great things from blogs, but I would not want to read a series of disjointed thoughts in a book. Blogging is a great way to learn the craft of writing, develop your voice, and find your audience.

I talk with prospective clients each week. Most of my clients share the same struggle. They want to know how to start their book. I felt the same way when I decided to write my first book too. It can be overwhelming. You have great ideas bouncing around your brain, and you know they would make a great book. Then you go to write them down, and it turns into crazy mush.

How can you focus to make progress on your book?  

Give yourself some grace. You are most likely learning a new skill.   

Today’s podcast is about the five essential steps to take to start the process of writing your book. This podcast gives you a path to follow. Feel free to create your own system from mine. Do what works for you! The steps are not always taken in order. They are meant as a guideline to help you begin the journey into writing.  Your path may not look like mine. I don’t want it to! Have you struggled with fear and being creative during this time of uncertainty? It is okay if you have. I have, and I know most people struggle right now. This is something none of us had ever had to deal with before. With all the unknowns, it can be anxiety inducing. 

But you can use this time to continue to learn the craft of writing. Writing a crappy draft is easier to edit than a blank page. Write even if you don't feel like it. Set a timer and write for 15 to 30 minutes and see what you can get on the page. 

Keep the practice of writing going. The more you write, the better your writing will become. 

Mastering your mindset as a writer grows confidence you can help your reader. Omar shares three ways to grow your confidence. It was refreshing at this time to listen to this podcast again. 

Don't let fear of not being good enough, smart enough, or whatever is holding you back stop you from sharing your message.

✍️ Collaborate with a PAA to help you with the many aspects of writing!

✍️ A PAA can help you through Self-Publishing OR Traditional Publishing​!

​Why do authors need a Professional Author Assistant?

Professional Author Assistants help bring order to all the chaos with writing a book and we break it down into three different sections: the manuscript phrase, the self-publishing phase or traditional publishing phase, and the marketing phase. For instance, in the manuscript phase nonfiction authors use quotes from other people or use other people's content. There are permissions to coordinate and a professional author assistant can complete this for the author.

If the author decides to self-publish, but then decides they want a traditional publishing deal, there's research they can hand off to their assistant. There are different pieces of a marketing proposal a PAA can research and find the needed information.

Writing a book, creating a proposal, finding an agent and publisher, and the marketing of the author and their book has many moving parts. If the author decides to self-publish, this process includes many moving parts as well. A PAA takes the pressure off by helping the author through all the different phases of writing, publishing and marketing their book.

What Giants are you fighting in your writing career? 

Do you face the giant of discouragement when you write or think about writing your book? Everyone faces discouragement in life. When discouragement comes knocking on your door, know you are not alone, and God is faithful to help you. 

Being a writer can bring many discouraging moments, but keep your eyes focused on the big picture. Our failures, struggles, and discouraging times help us become better people and writers. Find ways to remember the good and know discouragement doesn’t last forever. You may struggle with it for a long season, but you will see progress as you keep moving, keep writing, and keep working toward your goal of publishing your book. 

Is your giant the giant fear? Fear holds you back from the place God wants you to go and the writing people need to read. 

As with any giant in your life, be intentional on how you can slay the giants keeping you from writing. Read books about writing to inspire your creativity, and educate you on the craft of writing.

It is hard not to compare the beginning or middle of your writing career with a more “successful” authors who have labored years for their overnight success. I encourage you to define what success in writing looks like for you every year.

Set milestones you want to accomplish along the way. This will give you momentum to keep going in the right direction to finish and publish your book.

Success will look different as you grow in your career. First, it may be you go to a conference and join a local writing group. Then it is you publish your first book.

A launch team helps spread the word faster and less expensive than purely advertising. People love to know what others recommend to read. Word of mouth is one of your strongest ways to advertise.

A launch team creates a buzz about your book with their friends and family. If they are bloggers, they can share a blog about your book or interview you for their blog. If they have a podcast, you could be interviewed for the podcast. If all they do is share on social media, it is powerful for you!

Blythe shares tips about what you can ask your launch team to do. Treat them like you would your best friend helping you spread the word. They are gold for the marketing of your book.

Should I create a book from my blog posts? 

Yes, you can! 

But I don’t recommend it. There is a myth thrown around you can throw some blog post together, and call them a book. However, I don’t agree with this idea. You write a blog in a short direct format for a particular audience about a specific subject. I have learned some great things from blogs, but I would not want to read a series of disjointed thoughts in a book. Blogging is a great way to learn the craft of writing, develop your voice, and find your audience.

I talk with prospective clients each week. Most of my clients share the same struggle. They want to know how to start their book. I felt the same way when I decided to write my first book too. It can be overwhelming. You have great ideas bouncing around your brain, and you know they would make a great book. Then you go to write them down, and it turns into crazy mush.

How can you focus to make progress on your book?  Give yourself some grace. You are most likely learning a new skill.   

Today’s podcast is about the five essential steps to take to start the process of writing your book. This podcast gives you a path to follow. Feel free to create your own system from mine. Do what works for you! The steps are not always taken in order. They are meant as a guideline to help you begin the journey into writing.  Your path may not look like mine. I don’t want it to!
