Beth Madison Howse was the archivist who inspired The Archivist. Quiet and generally unassuming, her personality was almost the polar opposite of mine when we met on the Fisk University campus in 1999. “Black” cities like Atlanta, D.C. and New Orleans, and black institutions like HBCUs, have been lovingly referred to as "Wakanda" — the mythical & revolutionary home of comic book character, Black Panther. However, none of them—and consequently, none of us—have ever been safe from the supremacy of whiteness, racism and race-based violence.
