The convention is the largest of its kind in the world, attracting thousands of investors and 26,000 attendees from over 130 countries. It is considered the “superbowl” event of extractive industries, featuring award ceremonies, workshops, and keynote addresses by prominent mining moguls and political figures, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Toronto is considered the hub of the global mining industry.</p><br><p>Though it promotes itself as an ethical industry upholding high environmental standards and labour practices, the Canadian mining industry is actually notorious for its ecological and human rights abuses around the world. On Wednesday, January 29th, the group Justice for Foodora Couriers held a Rally for Workers Rights in the Gig Economy. This rally was held immediately after the adjournment of the first section of the court case between <a href="https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2020/01/03/foodora-couriers-subject-to-strike-log-gps-tracking-and-misconduct-inquiries-labour-board-documents-claim.html" target="_blank">Foodora and the couriers</a>. They demanded a higher minimum wage, decent working conditions, and the right to form a union. </p><br><p>Fast forward to 2015 when the Fight for $15 and Fairness campaign launched in Ontario. They scored a major victory two years later in 2017 when the previous Liberal government introduced major reforms to Ontario’s labour laws, including a $15 minimum wage by 2019. Since then, Doug Ford’s conservative government has clawed back the minimum wage hike but the Fight for $15 &amp; Fairness refuses to accept this.&nbsp; </p><br><p><strong>Simran Dhunna</strong> is a master’s student in public health who currently organises with the Fight for $15 &amp; Fairness, Climate Justice Toronto, and Silence Is Violence. </p><br><p><strong>Talia Holy</strong> is an undergrad student studying Sexual Diversity Studies and Political Science. Harm reduction advocates gathered in 22 cities across Canada to demand that our federal government declare a state of emergency in response to an escalating drug crisis that has claimed the lives of more than 10,000 people in the last three years.</p><br><p>In Toronto, hundreds participated in the national day of action, featuring local artists and activists, and placing coffins in front of Queen's Park, where Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently decided to defund two local safe injection sites. 			<description><![CDATA[<p>In a move that will cost Ontario Universities $360 million and Colleges about $80 million, Doug Ford and the Ontario Conservative Party announced a series of cuts to post-secondary education that would reduce tuition fees by 10% beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year. Included in the roll-out: the elimination of tuition-based grants for low income students and a new Student Choice Initiative that encourages students to opt out of what the party deems “non-essential services”. These services include student unions, equity-based programming such as the Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) and campus-radio networks.</p><br><p>The series of cuts were met swiftly with protests across the province, including a series of actions at Queen’s Park. We’re joined by two organizers with the Ontario Student Action Network reflecting on their direct-action and what it takes to build student power across Ontario. </p><br><p>Susi Hermanns is a labour activist and third year student at York University.
