Behind all of the wins—there have been many days of uncontrollable tears and clouds of unknowns about how I’d come out of such darkness. This has been one of the most difficult and painful years of my life, and I can't say that I’m through the worst of it. In the same breath, the triumphs have been undeniably uncanny, and the depth of my gratitude and joy just cannot be articulated. What I can tell you is to get up and carry on, my love. Trust that the sun will rise again. Remain steadfast and always be thankful. Winning and grieving can coexist. Allow yourself to feel all of it. Happy 1-2-3-1-2-3! 🥂

Comparison is a thief of joy. But we're human, and so it's normal sometimes to compare ourselves to others. However, comparing yourself to others will only leave you feeling frustrated and anxious. Furthermore, it doesn't help in creating the life you want. It instead takes away irreplaceable time and energy that could have been better spent elsewhere. Here's the thing; there will always be someone more intelligent, attractive, or successful than you. The trick is understanding the unique value that you bring to the table. Remember that nothing and nobody is perfect; everything is special in its own way. So, instead of believing that the grass might be greener on the other side, try and nurture the grass that's on your side of the fence. “You are the sum of all your choices.” The first time I heard this statement all those many years ago, it didn’t sit well with me. I felt like, as a first-gen, life just happens to you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. But now that I think of it, I realize just how accurate the statement actually is. First, I am where I am today not because of the family I was born in, nor is it because of the friends around me every day. I am where I am because of all the choices I’ve made in life, both the good and the bad.

So, whenever things don’t go your way, do not look on the outside; revisit the choices you made on the inside. Always celebrate the good choices and resist the temptation to be too hard on yourself for the bad ones. I believe that life is only as beautiful as how you choose to make it. Here’s the thing, the biggest disappointments in life are often the result of misplaced expectations. This is especially true for relationships and business expectations– expecting too much from others is a recipe for disappointment. Where am I going with all of this? Well, you shouldn’t expect your friends to be your customers. Yes, you shouldn’t expect them to buy anything from you. They might choose to buy from you, but it shouldn’t be a requirement. Higher than normal expectations can do a lot of damage to your relationship. And as humans, we often miss the mark and shatter the expectation to bits. So, release the expectations altogether, go out and find customers outside your immediate circle. It’s more sustainable and rarely leads to strained relationships. Spring 2022: Session 202 (History Notes: Grieving the Loss of A Mentor with Eve Hudson, Ph.D.)

After going on and on about how being first-generation in a BGLO has changed my life, exactly one week since J13, the National President for my sorority transitioned. While I was already planning for today to be a show pulled from the archives, it was crystal clear to me which one it needed to be. It's even more interesting that, at the time of this airing, it's just six days shy of a year from its original release. It feels like a reminder that we always have what we need to continue to press forward.

Nothing is comparable to the special kind of pain felt when a close mentor transitions. The pain is often associated with memories or moments that we’ve had with them, but more so the lessons they didn’t have time to teach us. It’s as if our personal journeys have lost direction, and we find ourselves suddenly lost. What we can’t see, in the blurriness of our pain, is that a true mentor never really dies. There’s a lot of advice out there on how to double or even triple your revenue. And to be honest, I feel like I’ve consumed it all. I’ve taken courses, attended conferences, read books, and obsessively analyzed my income reports; however, nothing beats trying things out yourself and learning from your experiences. And it all starts with having a plan. Business revenue will not increase without a plan to identify the desired outcome and the processes necessary to achieve it. My business almost quadrupled its annual revenue in 2021. And it wasn’t an accident, neither was it a fluke. The average age of a first-year law school student is about 24. And so when someone spends years in another profession and decides to try their hand at law later in life, it becomes a little complicated. For one, deciding to go to law school is a big decision, no matter the age. It demands huge financial commitments and significant time sacrifices. Add the age bias present in many industries and it can be challenging for older candidates to gain admission to law schools, secure internships, or find employment after graduation.

But there's no doubt that it's always worth the sacrifice if a person has always wanted to practice law. While it's natural for people starting their professional life over to feel frustrated, don't let fears about being "too old" be a deterrent in deciding whether to go to law school. Fall 2021: Session 190 (Black Talent Matters: Why Diversity and Inclusion is a Struggle in Corporate America with Anastaisia Talton)

According to a 2020 report by MarketWatch, only 3.7% of Google workers were Black, less than 4% at Facebook, and 7.5% at Uber. The primary argument behind this heartbreaking statistic is the notion among corporate executives that finding capable Black talent is a challenge. It’s not clear whether they even looked at all, they didn’t know where to look, or that they didn’t look hard enough. All we know is that some things need to change.

Furthermore, when it comes to promoting Black leaders, the process is often reactive and not intentional. For example, the Black Lives Matter movement left shareholders rushing to promote long-serving Black employees based primarily on societal pressure. Unfortunately, this approach often causes problems when society demands a sense of urgency and the organization settles for an unqualified candidate. Yes, Black talent matters, but it should be the right talent at the right time and for the right reasons. Do Black people support each other? The answer to this hugely subjective question is both yes and no. First, Black people do support each other. In fact, they don’t just care about their families; they also care about the communities they live in. However, people in business who say Black people don't support each other often target the wrong audience. They complain that their families and friends do not support their hustle when, in fact, their products or services don't address their needs.

It's no secret; businesses that help and support other people will always attract an audience that supports them the same way. But, as a business person, it's unfair to depend on family and friends to be your customers. Entrepreneurs need to find the people who are most in need of their product or service and create a mutual relationship where customers spend money on things they actually need, and the business gets to allocate resources to the right efforts. This data speaks volumes about their ability to overcome obstacles, create a life for themselves, and successfully achieve the American dream. But the question is, why is it that immigrants tend to be more entrepreneurial? Interestingly, most first-gens overcome almost similar obstacles. Patience and resilience come naturally to them, and starting with nothing demands more discipline, flexibility, and persistence than everyone else. Many people dream about leaving behind corporate life, but few actually make the leap. Making that massive leap comes with risks few are willing to take. The idea of giving up a steady paycheck leaves many people paralyzed with doubt of what the future holds. Yet, working just for the paycheque is not sustainable. Summer 2021: Session 182 (Tackling Mental Health Issues in North Carolina with Alicia Tetteh)

With a population of approximately 9.9 million people, North Carolina is the 10th most populated state. Of those 9.9 million people, close to 3.9% of adults in North Carolina live with severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. (This is according to data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA). What's more worrying is that only 48.2% of adults with mental illness in North Carolina seek and receive some form of treatment. The remaining 51.8% receive no mental health treatment at all. Why is that? Why is North Carolina lagging on matters of mental health? Although the private sector is making tremendous strides in combating these issues, something really needs to be done. Summer 2021: Session 180 (Changing the Game in Mental Health as a Black Man with Darius Washington)

According to a 1986 report by the American Psychology Association, the percentage of psychology PhDs awarded to men in 1975 was nearly 70%. As of 2015, the lack of men graduating with doctorates from psychology programs was both alarming and disappointing. But what's even more worrying is the number of Black men pursuing psychology. In essence, 76% of the students in US universities that earned psychology PhDs in 2015 were White, and only 5.8% of psychology PhDs were awarded to black students. Of that 5.8%, 68% were Black females, further demonstrating that black males are woefully under-represented in the world of psychology. Why is that, and how many of them are First-Gens? Summer 2021: Session 179 (How First-Gens Navigate Social Mobility with Rufeida Alhatimy)

The past decade has seen an increase in the number of first-generation students in the U.S. attend four-year colleges and universities. This unprecedented shift is linked, in some part, to college initiatives aimed at reducing structural barriers to college access. Interestingly, social scientists believe improved educational opportunities for low-income students is among the most potent methods for stimulating upward mobility for first-gen students. But in the U.K., things are different. Although a third of the students are first-gens, not many universities take it upon themselves to identify and tackle first-gens issues. Universities only cover the bare minimum of, say, allocating scholarships to cover the costs of attending college. However, most students don't know how to budget those resources. Moreover, data from the U.S. Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics suggests that 33% of first-generation students will drop out of college in their first three years. This proves that most first-gens, no matter the country, just don't know how to go through college. It's time to bridge the gap. This is concrete proof that a person of color will be passed over for a promotion that was theirs for the taking at some point in their careers. Are you a first generation-college graduate and a first-generation to the United States? Being the first can be difficult, but it is getting through these transitions where we grow to become someone better than our past selves. Cesar shares with us his transitions from being born in Mexico to now becoming an entrepreneur. Being transparent in our story is what gives others the strength to know that they can keep moving forward and aspire for more.

Cesar was born in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico and moved to the US when he was 10 years old to a small agricultural town in the Salinas Valley. He is a first-generation professional working in higher education for over 15 years. The common thread in his work has been supporting first-generation, low-income (FLI) students at various levels. Cesar’s college career began at a community college before earning his BA and MA. He recently began working on his EdD in Organizational Change and Leadership, which he will use to further my work supporting FLI students.

Moving from Alaska to Oregon State, getting her doctorate, and starting her own company, Ayeesha shows us, forging your own path is the ultimate learning experience, and how personal development is key to one's success.

Ayeesha Hankins is an educator-entrepreneur who lives and works in Portland, OR. Although, Anchorage, Alaska is the city where she will always call home. Her business is aimed at helping women, particularly women of color understand the powerful role our self-beliefs have on our success in life and how to employ strategies to positively influence them. Empowering women to achieve their goals is meaningful work. She enjoys all things learning and aims to live a life that integrates work, play, good food, time with family, and rest. In terms of favorite people, her husband Greg is at the top of that list, giving her courage and helping her to grow.

Happy 7-0-4! As a Charlotte, North Carolina native, this is one of my favorite days of the year... because it's 704. Anywho... Life can be a winding road; however, no matter how the path may be, one of the things that we have to come to understand is that we are responsible for ourselves. Sabian, in spite of the circumstances that life presented him, learned this lesson at an early age and since has been committed to taking responsibility for himself and his future. Sabian was born in Panama City, Panama; however, he’s lived in Panama, Germany, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia then finally moving to Charlotte, North Carolina (whoop, whoop!). He attended NC State University and later transferred to Winston-Salem State University where he graduated with a degree in Sports Business Management with a minor in Accounting. Sabian believes his talents serve a greater purpose—to educate people on the importance of home ownership, as well as provide unmatched service to every person with whom he works. He is a husband to a gorgeous wife, father to a beautiful daughter, and son of two military parents who both served 20+ years in the Army.

So many things to consider as a first-generation college graduate turn professional; however, Dr. Tasha Gardner is here to provide us with some insight drawn from her experiences in both corporate America and education. Spoiler Alert: One isn't necessarily better than the other.

Dr. Tasha Gardner has been employed at Drexel University for over 12 years. Currently, she serves as Director for the newly formed Center for Inclusive Education and Scholarship at Drexel University--the center supports students from traditionally underrepresented and underserved backgrounds. Dr. Tasha holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration both from Drexel. Recently, she completed her doctoral work at Northeastern University, where her dissertation focused on the lack of Black faculty at a PWI and how that impacts the engagement of retention of Black students. Her other research interests include first-generation college students.

Have you ever heard that saying that failure is not final? While there will be times in life when circumstances may not turn out as planned, that does not me it is the end for us. As a matter of fact, our guest, Dr. Mia D. Johnson, is proof that you can bounce back. Although she flunked out of her first year of college, she'd go on to become a first-generation college graduate, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Psychology and Human Services, Consultant and Speaker (Elevation through Education). Amazing how things come full circle, right?

A Muncie, IN native, Dr. Mia D. Johnson graduated from Ivy Tech Community College in 2003 and then went on to earn both her Bachelor’s and Masters’ degrees in Psychology, and a PhD in Global Leadership with a Higher Education concentration in 2016. Mia is active in the community serving as the President-Elect for the YWCA- Central Indiana, sits on the board of directors for the United Way of Delaware County, the YMCA Muncie, and the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County’s scholarship advisory committee, mentor for Project Leadership, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Bridges Community Services, and member of Rotary International. She values time spent with her husband Wayne, and their two sons- Miles and Walker. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, gardening, baking, making soap and global travel.

In this session, Diarra Clarke chats with us about her experiences through education and yoga led her to want to make a difference in her community through both education and spiritually. Diarra Clarke is s a first-gen Jamaican graduate who experienced the education system differently and consequently created Star Seed & Co. which is dedicated to curricula and workshop development. As a part of this initiative, she curates curricula and programs for adult educators, community members, and the youth. In addition to teaching, she a dedicated artist as well, I using Royal Third Apparel, a point and paint clothing line of apparel that represents her yoga practice, Soul Flex Yogini, where she focuses on the alignment of the chakras and the utilization of the third eye, or enlightenment.

In his mind, it was the thing to do--a way out of poverty and path to financial freedom. However, he'd made it to law school (a dream realized) just to find it was no longer the dream. While he went on to finish the journey he started, he found himself pivoting in a way that he'd never imagined. Now, Leander is working tirelessly to create change in his community through financial literacy and entrepreneurship. While Dr. Kamshia Child’s parents never went to college, bringing home the newspaper and encouraging her to read fed into her love for learning which turned into her quest for higher education—a journey that would lead her down a path to make great strides and impact in BOTH K-12 and post-secondary education.

Dr. Kamshia Childs is a native of Wichita, KS, and she currently resides in the Dallas Metropolitan Area. Dr. Childs obtained an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. She also holds a BS in Elementary Education (ESL), and a MS in Curriculum and Instruction (Reading and Language Arts) from Kansas State University. Dr. Childs has been a Literacy Educator for over 15 years, and she has worked in rural and urban settings in K-12, and higher education. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed literacy journals, written a self-published book, and she presents at various conferences on topics related to literacy, educator empowerment, parent involvement, and culturally relevant pedagogy. She is currently an Ad Interim Assistant Professor for Texas A & M University-Commerce.

Looking back over the past year in particular, there is one thing I can say with full conviction… WOMEN. ARE. DOPE! I have to admit, this conversation played a huge role in me taking a closer look at own melanated womanhood—it forced me to not only embrace myself, but to put myself on a pedestal and… it made me really hone in on wanting to be a better woman and stand on the front line of helping other women be better women, too. Further, she's the owner and operator of TECHnically Speaking L.L.C provides assessment and treatment services both locally and internationally utilizing face to face intervention and tele-speech services. Dr. Stanford's research focuses on Social Justice and Communication Disorders, Literacy and language disorders in at-risk and disconnected minority youth, and the confluence of cognitive-communicative disorders and academic success, problem behaviors, and criminal recidivism in at-risk minority youth.

Dr. Smith is Managing Partner of Sophic Solutions, LLC, a change management firm in Kansas City, MO. The firm specializes in diversity, equity & inclusion training and community development. Smith is a Graduate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Missouri- Kansas City, where he specializes in courses that address racial and ethnic diversity, and cultural understanding. Over a span of 22 years, his scholarly interests have focused on race and racism in America. Smith is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated and a native of Georgetown, South Carolina. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Morris Brown College, and a master’s degree and doctorate from Tennessee State University.

In our short time together, we touch on so many things such as transitioning after having spent time in the military, taking a non-traditional route to higher education, discovering new worlds through literature, self-care practices while in graduate school, appreciating and learning about history (especially through the lens of Black writing), making meaning of new experiences, and so much more.
