This session is intended as a short daily reflection, that takes you through four question in 10 minutes, helping you process the events of the past 24 hours.

When things go wrong at the last minute

Hello Amazing!

What do you do if an engine fails during take-off? As the plane accelerates down the runway it will reach a speed where it is not yet fast enough to fly, but going so fast that it can't stop safely either. This speed is called V1, and it varies depending on aircraft and weather conditions. At this speed, the pilot will no longer abort the take-off. Even if an engine explodes, the other engine will keep accelerating the plane until it can lift off.

V1 speed is the key for one more reframe in your life. Mathias shares a story from his past and invites you to think about what's the V1 point in your work. How do you know if you've reached it? Is there a similarly counter-intuitive move that helps?

You can think of V1 speed in other parts of your life too. For instance, you love your kids but feel trapped in your marriage because of them. You don't want to leave them but a current life with your partner, whom you love too, makes you dead inside sometimes... You've passed the V1 point already, but one day your kids will grow and leave the home. What could you do to make you worthwhile and enjoyable until then? Ponder the fundamental dogma of Stoicism: the difference between what depends on us and what does not depend on us.

What does it mean to be alive

When did you last think about death and when was the last time you had to explain to anyone what it means to die? When raising kids you are sometimes asked such questions.

While Mathias shares a story about the gift of being a parent, a takeaway for you is to ponder what does it mean to be alive. How to not regret the time spent between birth and death?

I thought it would automatically become miserable. So I have been showing up like an actor who refuses to play his part and ruins the scene for everyone else. But perhaps there is a way.

The Power of Consistency

I used to believe that being authentic meant showing up as I am, always. But as I step into a leadership role, I begin to understand that there are many situations where this attitude won't work, because it means I'm often inconsistent. One day my performance is A+ and the next day it's D-. I don't think it's inauthentic to strive for more consistency, so long as it's not forced.

A wonderful slap in the face

I'm taking a course on basic leadership skills. The stuff that an arrogant side of me would like to pretend that I know really well. But I don't! Sure, I have taught leadership classes. But I haven't learned all of it. And this class helped me a lot by giving me some very precise and critical feedback about what I do really poorly. Like REALLY poorly... and I know it's true. Not because the test says it. The test just points to it. I know it's true because I can remember those situations. Thank goodness I decided to take this class so I can learn it and get better.

I am still learning how to work in a full time job, and it's not as easy as I thought it would be. I also have to face my own arrogance, in my attitude of expecting others to bend to my terms. I thought I was being flexible and accommodating but I can see now, that I actually wasn't. I wasn't honest with myself.

Getting stopped by the cops

Crowd source accountability

It's easy to think of crowd funding in a way where the crowd is the means to an end, which is the funding. However, it's a missed opportunity if we only think this way. If we focus less on the funding, we can use the same mechanism to create social accountability for projects that don't actually require much funding, but where our tendencies to procrastinate can delay the project eternally. In this episode I tell the story of Bryony Cole and how she raised money to launch her podcast The Future Of Sex, and how the process of doing it helped her take action and make the idea a reality.

Priorities and hell yeah

Saying yes to the right things and no to the wrong things is a challenge. And the best way to prioritize depends on your situation. If you have too many opportunities you can do what Derek Sivers suggests, and ask yourself: is this a "hell yeah!" thing? If it's not, then it's a no. However, when you have too little opportunity, it might be better to say "why not?"

Lost Confidence and asking for help

Something happened today that made me reflect on confidence. I usually have lots of confidence, but sometimes there seems to be a leak, and suddenly my confidence is gone, and it's hard for me to move forward. In the past I would always want to rebuild it on my own. Find the leak and fix it. And I still like that process and learning about myself. But lately I'm trying to be more ok asking for help from others. To ask others for appreciative feedback or other ways to be reminded of what I'm contributing and why it matters.
