1915 - Gruesome Gamble on Gallipoli

The year is 1915, the western front is in stalemate, and we're (Jonny, Phil) landing at Gallipoli: We have come a long way since our 20th Century journey began: Only by travelling year by year, in chronological order, can we truly get to grips with the 20th C. It surprises us that so few History podcasts go year by year, preferring instead to divide history into highly marketable chunks. NOT US. It isn't too late to join our Iliad. This year we find ourselves in Turkey in the thick of WW1, armed only with a thirst for understanding. As usual we are tasked with bringing back an item each from our quest, but not before we grapple with the unimaginable losses suffered by both sides as the Allied Forces go up the Dardanelles to try to grab Constantinople (Istanbul) and knock 'the sick man of Europe' out of the war. 1914 - Student whacks Archduke in Sarajevo

We (Jonny, Phil, Dr. Sam) blast back in time to 1914 Sarajevo, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie have been shot at point blank range by Gavrilo Princip: one of seven young amateur would-be assassins. We have a detailed look at the murders, and put Princip (who would have been into Andrew Tate) and Franz (flower arranging family man who murdered cats and Koala beasrs) under our weird history microscope. We play a game of guess the tattoo in "Gavrilo or Gavrilno?", and then get into the outbreak of the Great War in Europe. We conclude by looking at FF's love of horrible bloodsports, and wonder if perhaps the Archduke (and the rest of the world) were punished for his cosmic karma.. We blast back in time to Mexico to examine a significant (and toadying) interview by American James Creelman with brutal 78yr old Dictator Porfirio Dias. In this interview,PD, in an attempt to charm the Americans, accidentally welcomed the idea of political opposition..

He was taken at his word by revolutionaries like Maduro, Pancho Villa, and Zapata, all of whom we dip into and look at the way events unfolded around them. Plus: Did Zapata really coin the phrase "Better to die on your feet than live on your knees."??

The Time Trippers keep on in their 20th Century Quest - Year by Year, Event by Event, bringing k a historical item each back from every year. This year they focus on the horrific scale of Child Labor in 1909 USA, (with a few mentions of William Blake and Charles Dickens and so on). The highlight: Jonny has interviewed his children about child labour, and their reactions/ schemes to escape their hypothetical shackles are as delightful as they are thought-provoking.

They follow Lewis Hines -former teacher and muckracker - the intrepid, colourful figure who documented the scale the suffering and exploitation had reached by 1909. Jonny and Phil look into some of the techniques he used to get past the bullies and psychopathic factory owners, to continue his work to bring the scale of the crisis to the nation's attention, including disguising himself as a bible salesman to get his pictures. But how long did it take for anything to change? And how much has it changed in the world today? Was Child Labour just outsourced away from, the glare of the camera, and from much of the USA/West?

And why, in 2023, are McDonalds franchises in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Maryland being fined after 305 minors, including 2 10-year olds, were found working there illegally?

1906- San Francisco Earthquake

Time Trippers continue on their 20th century mission: year-by-year, event-by-event. This week it is 1906 and a devastating earthquake has hit San Francisco, the aftermath and implications of which they examine and probe, via the Natural History Museum Kobe earthquake simulator, an eventual go on the Universal Studios 'Earthquake" movie ride, and of course it will all end in the joy and resurgence of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition, after the subject of 1904 - The Construction of the Panama Canal has been completed.

As usual the TTs must each bring back a historical item /antique from their journey. This week both items are very large, causing practical problems...
