Phoebe is passionate about her job at the Zoo where she’s been working for the past 16 years. School children from all across Victoria of all ages come to Zoo on excursions to learn about conservation, and Phoebe says that the environment can be particularly suitable and supportive for neurodivergent kids. 

Kate and Mandy reflect on how much the Zoo has meant to them personally, offering a safe, inclusive and consistent place to bring their peashoots and families over the years. Mandy recalls the Association for Children with Disabilities Dream Day at the Melbourne Zoo, which Phoebe says paved the way for the Zoo to improve inclusion and accessibility, including providing training for Zoo staff about Pea family needs, and installing Changing Places facilities at each of their four Victorian sites. The Zoo also now provides social stories and sensory maps to help prepare kids before they come to the Zoo on excursions.  

The Zoo is also very welcoming of adults with disabilities who come to the Zoo for time outdoors in a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment. Phoebe also says that 10 percent of the Zoo’s staff have disabilities, and they’re improving their accreditation and hiring practices for volunteers with disabilities.  Mandy, Kate and Phoebe also reminisce about the role the Zoo played during COVID lockdowns, where they opened up through digital programs and entertained everyone through the Animals at Home livestreams!

Amanda is a woman who loves to study, and was doing her thesis during Melbourne's COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 with her family at home. Experiencing overwhelm, Amanda called Carer Gateway which is Australian federal and state government-funded program that provides emotional and practical services and support for carers.

Amanda received practical help from Carer Gateway, and so did her eldest daughter who was also studying her VCE. Amanda now works for them as the Victorian Partnerships Lead and her job is to talk to organisations to build partnerships with Carer Gateway. Amanda absolutely loves this work and sees it as a great privilege to use her lived experience as well as her skills to improve the lives of carers.

Mandy and Kate chat to Alex, Pea mum of 3 sons and a very interesting person. Alex shares with us about the birth of her son Harry who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome on the same day he became very unwell and was transferred to intensive care at another hospital. During this time in hospital, Harry was also diagnosed with Hischsprungs Disease, which is a condition of the large intestine.

Once Harry was stable he came home and Alex began learning about his conditions.

Harry had early intervention and eventually went to his local mainstream primary school where he thrived and has continued in mainstream schooling for secondary school too. Harry is a community man and has played many sports for his local clubs, like his brothers and is also an athlete with Special Olympics where he has represented Victoria at the National Games in 2022. Harry was also given the honour of being in a TV ad with Kenny Jacobson in collaboration with Special Olympics and IGA. Harry loved this experience and Alex talks about the notorious Goat Curry. Alex studied disability and has spent her career in the disability sector. Her current role is with the Victorian Electoral Commission and is the democracy ambassador in the education inclusion team. Her team delivers electoral education and information to priority communities including people with disabilities. They run voter education sessions and go to adult services, TAFE's and specialists schools and run incursions catered to the group's needs. They cover who can vote, why voting is important etc and run a mock election. Alex also speaks to families and carers. Alex is passionate about voting as a human right and what better person for the job!

Kelly introduces us to her family and her son Max who has a diagnosis of Norrie Disease which means Max has been blind from birth. He was also diagnosed autistic at 8 years old. Max spent lots of his younger years learning skills including braille and was in mainstream primary school. This meant a lot of advocacy for Kelly. For secondary schooling, Max attends a specialist school where he is thriving. Kelly began Comfort on the Spectrum in covid lockdown Melbourne, due to Max having a limited amount of clothing that he preferred to wear. Kelly's mum made the prototype and Kelly now has the clothing manufactured overseas to access the bamboo and the unique flat seams, that are unable to to made here in Australia. Kelly is so proud of her products and know that they have changed many a persons life. She is excited by her new design which is a hoodie with a chewy tube attached.

Mandy met Chloe while she was volunteering as Team Support at the 2022 Special Olympic National Games and became a fan of her big heart, commitment and enthusiasm in supporting the athletes night and day. Chloe chats a bit about her childhood growing up with her brother, how much she enjoys the flexibility of support work and the opportunities she’s had to coach, volunteer and travel to Europe through the Special Olympics. 

Chloe encourages anyone under age 30 to consider a career in support work, as every day is different, you’re out in the community rather than stuck behind a screen and you come home knowing that you’re the reason for making someone else’s day.

Trish talks about the journey of diagnosis, which began when her eldest peashoot was in high school and just as COVID was beginning. This then sparked her own journey towards an adult diagnoses of ADHD, and the game-changing experience of taking medication for the first time.

Trish also chats about parenting her peashoots along with continuing her rewarding career as a paediatric retrieval nurse. In her role, Trish travels across South Australia to collect sick kids from regional hospitals to transfer them to receive higher levels of care.

She came home at 6.5 weeks and was healthy and growing beautifully. Sonja began the journey of hip dysplasia and microcephaly initially and had a hip brace and avoided a head brace. Emmy then got her nickname as baby Elton John with her first pair of glasses.

Sonja grew up in America, and lives in Melbourne, so her family came to Australia with their family heirloom gown for Emmy to wear at her christening. It was a very special time.

Sonja was told to google Patau Syndrome/Trisomy 13 by her Doctor and she found it affects one in 4000 - 20,000 people. Emmy's geneticist told Sonja that her results had not been found in anyone else in the world and now that Emmy is older, they have met another little boy from QLD.

Emmy has had some significant respiratory illness in her life and at age 3, she was extremely unwell and had a cardiac arrest in the ambulance on the way to RCH and thankfully was resuscitated and recovered. She had many respiratory admissions to hospital for many years.

Emmy began schooling in mainstream, and then moved to a specialist school in grade one which coincided by covid 2020. Emmy enjoys school and is now in grade 6.

Emmy is dramatic, friendly, be anyones best friend, she is a storyteller with a terrific memory. She is a Special Olympics athlete and loves being a part of it. She is now heading into the secondary school with a new diagnosis of Autism and Intellectual Disability and the tours for the schools have began.

Sonja is a florist and loves using the creative part of her brain. She is pausing her florist business at the moment, but follow her for when she returns.

Maya chats all about Lloyd’s birth when she was just eighteen years old, and the long journey towards diagnosis when he was 2 and a half years old. Lloyd is a full-time wheelchair user and is peg-fed, and is a chill and happy little peashoot who adores cars and 80s rock music, and is a good big brother to his little sister Elsie. 

Maya started Rare Wear as she was finding it hard to buy clothes for Lloyd that were easy and comfortable - pants should not be hard! Rare Wear offers adaptive tops, bottoms, accessories and swimwear that make life easier for kids and carers.

In her spare time, Maya has also worked full time at Supercheap Auto sharing her mad car skills taught to her by her dad, is doing her honours year in health sciences at uni with a view to doing a PhD next year, and also undertakes community advisory roles with a range of organisations, including SWAN Australia.

Spotting a music therapy conference happening in her hometown of Brisbane, she decided to head along to explore it. Little did she know that she was about to experience a sliding doors moment, when on hearing a speech about music therapy practice in the RCH NICU, she realised, “This is what I’m going to do with the rest of my life!”

Alex started studying at the University of Queensland, and then following a move to Tasmania, began her music therapy practice, mostly with young children and older people. She shares some beautiful client stories that will make you cry (Mandy sure does!) and delves into the research behind why this particular form of therapy is so powerful - particularly the ‘memory bump’ that occurs between the ages of 10-30, where all the songs you love during this age stay with you and become enduring and resonant memories throughout your life.  

Alex also discusses how to access music therapy through NDIS,  why she thinks every Pea should be in a choir, and why you should intentionally use your memory bump music to get you through the hardest parts of your day.

Belinda’s natural health career was inspired by her experiences of being a Pea mum to a daughter with type 1 diabetes. She found that meditation and shiatsu have helped her better manage challenges and stress, and hold her through the hardest times.

Louise shares her story of Isabelle’s diagnosis thanks to the quick and insightful actions of two supportive paediatricians, and her months-long hospital stay in a positive pressure room, all while the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Isabelle underwent a lifesaving stem cell transplant at 7 months of age and was able to return home. Isabelle’s condition also led to hearing loss, and she’s also been subsequently diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay. 

Louise is proud to have successfully advocated for SCID to be added to Australia’s Newborn Bloodspot Screening Panel and has ensured that SCID is now detected, diagnosed and treated shortly after birth in every state in Australia, before a baby can become critically ill or pass away.  

Louise also sits on the Board of the Immune Deficiencies Foundation of Australia, supports other families who have a child born with SCID and is an advocate and peer mentor to families living with any immune deficiencies.

Rachael shares the story of her pregnancy, moving to Hobart in preparation for Robbie’s birth, time in the NICU, Robbie’s surgery at only 9 days of age, and his diagnosis of the rare genetic disorder Angelman Syndrome. Rachael talks about adjusting to Robbie’s medical complexities, feeling like the whole world had changed around her, experiencing the hard days of isolation, loneliness and comparison, but receiving some wonderful support from some amazing and insightful friends.   

Rachael connected online with other Angelman Syndrome parents and developed new and supportive friendships, leading to her role in the association. The Association provides support, information, education, networking, research promotion and advocacy for people and families affected by the syndrome. 

We also learn that Robbie is a gentle and beautiful boy, he loves holding hands and touching faces, he’s patient and works incredibly hard at his therapies, he’s a good big brother and and loves music!

Lewis talks about growing up managing all the challenges of multiple surgeries, speech therapy and regular check ups with a whole range of doctors and specialists. Primary school was not much fun as he went to a sporty school when he wasn’t into sports, but he found his feet and a loving and supportive community at high school, where his friends loved drama and music as much as he did.

Lewis also talks about the impact on his mum and dad, their work in supporting other cleft families, and  the support and kindness the whole family received from their church community. Kate and Mandy were also extra impressed to hear the news that Lewis’ dad owns an IGA supermarket, given they’re both very frequent shoppers at their local. 

Lewis also talks about making the decision to no longer undergo further surgeries, as he’s happy and confident as he is. Lewis is focused on studying, running his YouTube channel and staying involved in his local community.

Sue talks about managing the children’s diagnosis and care in a time prior to the NDIS, coming to terms with the news in her own time and finding her own strength before sharing the news with others, and finding her tribe of supporters and friends through the specialist school system. She shares some frank and funny conversations about the times she took her children travelling overseas and camping locally with all of their medical equipment and needs, the kindness of strangers at some times and the terribly rectum behaviour from some at other times. 

Sue has seen plenty of change in the almost ten years on the board at Carers Victoria, and although there’s a keen emphasis on building an inclusive community and making social services work a lot better, there’s still a long way to go in supporting carers better, as Peas well know. Sue encourages everyone to connect with Carers Victoria, or the local carers advocacy network in your local area, to add your voice in advocating for change. Snuggly Bags by Ellie is inspired by Mel’s fifteen-year-old daughter Ellie, who is diagnosed with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Once she’d grown out of her size 4 sleeping bag, Ellie had trouble sleeping under the covers, yet Mel couldn’t find bigger sleeping bag sizes to suit Ellie’s growing body. 

So, with Sue’s background in the clothing industry and dress design, she set about designing and making a sleeping bag to fit. Using a business called Manufacture My Product, Sue was able to source organic,  pure cotton and have samples made up in China, and develop two different weighted full bags, a lighter summer bag and a suit with legs. The bags use soft woven cotton that feels like sheets and allows plenty of room for movement. 

Sue and Mel took the Snuggly Bags to the Source Kids expo in Sydney, where a tired dad bought a snuggly bag for his young son. He contacted them the next day, to say he’d had his first full night’s sleep in years! Sue and Mel then knew they were onto a product that could help Peas everywhere get a better night’s sleep. Snuggly Bags can be modified to fit feeding tubes and can be claimed as a consumable through NDIS.

Cally chats about Amelie’s life with SMS, including some chronic sleep issues that saw her falling asleep in funny places during the day, the commonly overlapping symptoms with autism, ADHD, OCD and sensory issues, and her journey through school in the special education system. 

Cally has been involved in Smith-Magenis Syndrome Australia for several years and is now their Director. The organisation’s key activities include raising awareness, particularly on Smith-Magenis Awareness Day coming up shortly on November 17, welcoming and supporting families of newly-diagnosed children with education, resources and community, and running camps.  

Cally is also the powerhouse Chair of Melbourne Inner East Specialy Olympics Club, where Amelie is involved in athletics and snow skiing. This is where she met Mandy and Molly! Cally talks about her experiences attending the Special Olympics National Games in 2022, and the World Games in Berlin earlier this year.  Thanks for sharing your story with us Cally!

Competing this week in the IFCPF 2023 Asia-Oceania Championships at the Home of The Matildas in Melbourne, the Paramatildas are currently undefeated after four matches against Japan and Nepal. The team is also ranked #1 internationally and came second in the IFCPF World Cup in 2022, an incredible rise to the top since its founding in 2019. 

Kelly chats about her background growing up playing football at a state level, the inspiration she found in her football-loving dad and the ongoing injuries that hampered her playing career. Coaching the Paramatildas helped her achieve her dream of being involved in football at an international level, while also supporting women and girls with CP and ABI to come together, play in a team and represent their country! Kelly talks through the process of player selections, classifications, the challenges and triumphs along the way, the trickiness of being away from her two children when coaching and travelling, and the absolute joy and honour of being the coach of an amazing team of athletes following their dreams. 

Kelly encourages everyone to join the Paramatildas family, come along to support them at the Championships this week and reach out to Football Australia if you have a peashoot who might want to try out. Bus Stop Films’s Accessible Film Studies Program offers people the chance to learn about filmmaking and working in the screen industry. The year-long program teaches practical and creative screen industry skills while also providing the opportunity to build community, make friends, increase confidence and learn work-ready skills. 

Participants make films about topics and ideas that they’re interested in pursuing, across all film genres.  There’s no exams or assessments and they can spend as long as they like in the program.

Their films are regularly entered in film festivals worldwide and participants are often walking the red carpet to showcase their work! Bus Stop Films also has an employment program that assists participants in finding work in the screen industry, and for production companies looking to hire people with disabilities.

Kate’s oldest child Michael has an acquired brain injury and her second child Jack is legally blind. Michael was struck by a car while helping his brother cross the road, and spent six months in hospital recovering, including a month in ICU. He’s now non-verbal and requires constant care, but still goes on plenty of adventures like water skiing and skydiving. Jack is still studying and is currently overseas on exchange in the Czech Republic, and navigating a different life to his peers due to his visual impairment. Kate shares their family’s story with a lot of laughs and a quite few f-bombs so make sure you’ve got your headphones in while listening!

Sarah was inspired to start Wholesome Blends by her twin son Lewis, who at the age of three, unexpectedly suffered a stroke and developed a hemiplegia.  As a result, Lewis found the gross motor tasks of eating and swallowing to be very difficult and unpleasant. A subsequent diagnosis of ADHD also complicated matters, as Lewis also experienced the appetite suppressant effects of the ADHD medication, so Lewis was struggling to take in enough nutritious food to support his growth and development.

After a rectum comment of being told to choose whether her son would eat or learn, Sarah was determined to find a better solution for Lewis. Permanent tube feeding was the best option, but the blends available were high in sugar in not very appealing. So, Sarah founded Wholesome Blends!

Harry also talks about his time in the Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Program, where he learned leadership and communication skills and gained opportunities to provide feedback and consultation on making the Games the best experience possible. This outstanding young leader also chats about his qualifications and his current work as Allied Health Assistant at a Melbourne hospital. 

Next, Chelsea talks about her Berlin games experience, and her current role in the Athlete Leadership Program, where she’s developing valuable skills, building relationships and finding opportunities to share her story, feel included and represent her country. This young powerhouse is also the Athlete’s Representative on the Law Enforcement Torch Run International Executive Council, where she is the representative for over 5 million athletes around the world, and only the second non-American athlete to hold the position.  

Kate joins Mandy to chat with Anna Mezger, Harry’s mum and a Special Olympics Australia board member. She gives both a parent and board members view of the Special Olympics World Games, and all of the learnings she's gained from attending the largest inclusive sporting event in the world, attended by 7000 athletes and 18000 volunteers!

Kathy’s long and successful career started at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, where many years later, she provided physiotherapy to Mandy’s twin daughters Milly and Molly following their dual leg surgeries. Kathy now works in the community providing physiotherapy to children and also mentors and supports newer physiotherapists to develop their skills. 

With soccer all the rage in Australia at the moment with the current FIFA Women’s World Cup underway on our shores, this was the ideal time to hear about Kathy’s new all-abilities soccer program that she’s started up in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs.  Kathy was the Vice President of the Maroondah United Football Club, and was well aware that finding appropriate and engaging sports for kids with disabilities and special needs can be very tough for Pea families. 

Inspired by one of the club’s coaches, whose soccer-loving daughter sadly passed away, Kathy finally started the all-abilities team so that he could coach and participate in her honour, while also providing new opportunities for local peashoots keen to participate and belong in a sports team. 

It’s been a great success! The all-abilities team has approximately 21 children taking part each fortnight, having fun, smashing through smilestones and finding friendships and new connections in a place that’s inclusive and welcoming.

Brooke shares Rye’s story, from his birth following a stroke in utero, a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and unexplained medical conditions that led to a regression in his development over time.

With Rye’s birth occurring before the NDIS scheme began, Brooke was thrown into a new world of fundraising to pay for all of Rye’s many therapy and equipment needs. Brooke talks about many of the positive aspects of Rye’s life, from his supportive school environment, his troop of support workers, known as ‘Rye’s Babes’, who developed a close friendship group all thanks to Rye, his beautiful smile and his extended family who rallied around Brooke, Rye, her husband and two younger children to support them. 

Rye progressively became more unwell and spent most of the final year of his life in hospital, before passing away. Brooke shares about his funeral, which was like a beautiful party, and a family member’s gift of a 12-year-old oak tree to plant in their garden in his memory.   

Brooke also speaks about the journey of finding her feet again following Rye’s passing, and letting go of the life she built around his care, including all of the people who entered their life to help care for him. Brooke has now set up her own Pilates studio on the Mornington Peninsula as part of this new phase in her life.

The three met at a Neighbours Every Day event earlier in the year, when after chatting with Kate and Mandy, Julie discovered that she was a Pea! Julie has an adult son with autism and has plenty of experience in not only cooking up beautiful dishes on TV, but cooking to suit her son’s particular eating and food challenges. When Mandy and Kate told Julie that they’d always wanted to do a Too Peas episode on food, cooking and eating, Julie was well and truly up for the challenge.

Enjoy this amazing episode where Julie talks about her “wild” experience on the first season of Masterchef, the differences between ‘mum cooking’ and ‘fun cooking' and how to find the joy in cooking for children with challenges such as food aversions,  sensory and textural challenges, choking risks, fussiness and reluctance to change. Julie also gives some insider info on how she perfects her cookbook recipes, and some hot tips on making daily cooking less of a drag.

Seeing her own teen autistic peashoot Nick struggling with loneliness, Michelle decided to develop Kaboose to help him safely find his tribe. She has a professional background in people and culture in the IT field, and decided to use her expertise and connections to bring Kaboose to life.  

Michelle chats about Nick’s early years, including diagnosis, early intervention, kinder and schooling and all the challenges that go along with it. Michelle also talks about her family’s time during the pandemic, which was particularly tough on everyone’s mental health. She then chats about the process of developing the app and launching it, the app's features, and shares some of the wonderful feedback she’s received already.

SATB2 Connect was inspired by Dalal’s experiences with her daughter Naomi, who has the rare genetic condition. Started in 2021 (during COVID, a few days before Christmas!) SATB2 Connect was created to support those living with SATB2 Associated Syndrome and its symptoms. SATB2 Connect aims to raise awareness, advocate, raise funds and drive research to educate, support and collaborate with researchers, medical professionals, therapists and families.

Dalal talks about the diagnosis journey, finding her ‘advocacy gene’ and reaching out to specialists and researchers at the University of Sydney to partner with them on much-needed SATB2 research, and student project opportunities in OT, speech and biomedical engineering.

Mandy is flying solo this week, chatting to Louise Mapleston, social worker and founder of Check and Chat, a consent, sexuality and wellbeing psychoeducation and counselling service for people with disabilities. Check and Chat provides individual sessions, group training and support for parents and professionals. 

Louise founded Check and Chat in 2021 to address the high rates of sexual victimisation of people with intellectual disabilities identified in the Disability Royal Commission.  Louise also provides support to people with autism, as they’re also highly likely to be victimised while also engaging in harmful sexual behaviours. Louise shares some confronting stats about the level of risk to our peashoots, which highlights all the more just how critical it is to take a primary prevention approach through consent education and resources.

Louise also shares some free resources you can check out, such as Planet Puberty, Murray Mallee Community Legal Service video resources on consent and sexting and Dr Wenn Lawson’s autism-focused resources.  You can also search #consent on TikTok for diverse range of conversations and ideas on consent.

Established in 2021 to meet a need for inclusive employment in the local area, All Things Cafe has been very successful, with staff excelling in their roles, strong community support and a  waitlist of 50 people ready to work. Not a day service or school, cafe employees are paid award wages and provided with training, experience and the confidence to set them up for ongoing employment in the wider workforce. 

Bianca and Jess are both passionate about accessibility and inclusion, and talk about the meaningful work and training opportunities provided to staff through the cafe, as well as their cooking school, local sporting canteen pop ups and new catering service for events. Sparking a dialogue about disability and employment, and opening up partnership opportunities and networks to help cafe employees take their next steps out into the workforce, are also key to what they do.

After meeting at a parenting support group and striking up a friendship, Seana and Benison decided to write a book together to address the enormous lack of support for parents at the time. The updated edition includes new and inclusive language, new evidence-based interventions, information on NDIS, greater recognition of diagnosis in women and girls, a new chapter with advice for parents directly from adults with autism, and more. The book draws on the experience of over forty different collaborators, including adults with autism, parents, professionals and autism experts.

Since then, Helen has developed a program called Healthy Mothers Healthy Families, which is the longest-running, most effective program for mothers of children with disabilities in the world. The award-winning program offers free workshops, a free self-paced website and training for paediatric OTs to better support Pea mums. Mandy has completed the course and rated it “magic”.  

Helen is passionate about supporting mothers and doesn't intend to stop advocating for them anytime soon. She sees her role as metaphorically watering and shining sunshine onto Peas, and ensuring that they feel seen and validated in their role.  

Helen, Mandy and Kate have a long, nourishing chat about the benefits and research findings of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Families program and the vital importance of Pea mums finding time to look after their own physical and mental health and wellbeing, to ensure a healthy and happy life for their families.

She has a background in psychology, art therapy, play therapy, higher education teaching and learning, and currently works in her private practice Play and Filial Therapy.   

She’s also a Pea with two children with different medical conditions and has recently ‘delivered’ her third ‘child’ (her PhD!) for assessment after eight years of research. While working as a school counsellor and studying art therapy in the UK, Kate decided to pursue play therapy as she loved working with children and families, and was passionate about the power of play.  

Kate shares her journey through studying, practicing and teaching play therapy, including her experience in academic research. She’s developed evidence-based practices to support both parents and teachers in delivering play therapy at home and school. 

She’s passionate about working with teachers and families, working with groups of children in Group Play Therapy, training student play therapists, contributing to play therapy research, and offering clinical supervision and professional development to registered play therapists. She’s also self-publishing a book for play therapists in 2023.

Monica’s seven-year-old daughter Sophia is the inspiration behind it all. Sophia has a rare neurological disorder called Rett Syndrome which impacts her movement and speech. She’s smart, a much-loved little sister, has a great sense of humour, uses a wheelchair and communicates through eye gazing and her iPad.  

When taken out in her wheelchair in cold and frosty Canberra, Sophia would often kick off her blankets in excitement. Monica was forever adjusting the blankets to stay tucked in! So, with an interest in sewing and a desire to create something practical and stylish, Monica decided she’d try her hand at designing and selling blankets specifically suited for use with wheelchairs and strollers. 

After much trial and error with the design and manufacture, and thanks to the generous support of friends and supporters through the Kickstarter fundraising platform, Mimi Blankets was finally launched! Sophia was very involved with the process, choosing designs and helping to make executive decisions. Mimi Blankets offer a range of high-quality, warm, durable, waterproof, versatile and beautiful products, and Monica is very excited to be sharing them with the world.

Clare reflects on Lexi’s birth, after which she was hospitalised in NICU for three weeks. Lexi had suffered a stroke in utero and was soon after diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Claire then found herself on a mission to ‘cure CP’ and threw herself into research and trying multiple therapies, trying hard to provide Lexi with all the support she could find for her in those crucial first three years. 

Given there was no NDIS and limited other support and funding at the time, Clare and Dino tried fundraising in order to pay for her therapies. They created this gorgeous appeal video and asked 140 people to join ‘Team Lexi Gem’ and pledge $1 a day for 365 days. Within 48 hours, they’d fundraised $80K!!

After struggling to get the funds to purchase an iPad following her own diagnoses of autism and intellectual disability, a tool that would help her learn, Keeley decided she would change things for other kids so that no one would have to go through the experiences she went through. She’s now raised a huge $250,000 and provided over 300 iPads to kids all around Australia.

Sally talks about her life with Jana, a happy little girl who is currently in her first year of school. Sally was inspired to write her book after reading another book about Down Syndrome to Jana's classmates. She found the children to be so receptive, open and accepting that she went home and wrote a new story about Jana, featuring themes of kindness, inclusivity, friendship, celebration and socks!  She then partnered up with illustrator Alexis Schnitger, who also has a child with Down Syndrome, to self-publish her gorgeous picture book. The book’s ‘sock’ theme also connects with the World Down Syndrome Day ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign that aims to raise awareness about the condition.

Ondine’s boys have severe disabilities as a result of their condition. She chats about the challenges of their birth and diagnoses in Israel, where she was also managing her toddler daughter plus her unwell newborns far from her family's support, while also not speaking the local language of Hebrew. The boys were eventually diagnosed with the very rare disorder after a long search for help and answers that was spearheaded by Ondine’s dedicated dad.  

Ondine reflects on the challenging and often lonely journey of being a twin mum with kids with special needs. The family moved back to Australia for a while to be closer to family, but ended up returning to Israel as it was a better fit overall for the family’s needs.

In the last few years, Ondine’s been able to focus on her life and career again, and has written several books, including her memoir The Miracle of Love, Vegan Living: A simple guide to a cruelty-free, healthy plant-based life and the Animal Allies YA Series Sky, Snow and Star.  She also founded Voiceless with her dad to promote an equitable world where animals can flourish.

Simone’s son Josh was born with a rare kidney disease that required a transplant at age 5 and was subsequently diagnosed with autism and an intellectual disability. Her second child was also born at 25 weeks and spent seven months in NICU. Simone became an entrepreneur as she wanted to be known as more than just the ‘mum of the sick kid’ and she also needed the type of flexibility that the standard workplace can’t offer. Plus wanted to unleash her creativity, do something for herself and also create opportunities for her own kids to become entrepreneurs in 

the future. 

Simone has also started the On-Plug podcast to start conversations about disability and entrepreneurship, while the On-Plug marketplace will be coming soon in 2023. Enterpreneurship is a meaningful employment pathway for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and their carers, and Simone strongly believes we need to be talking more about it, plus plugging all the amazing businesses people are running. With a career in marketing management roles, Emma’s direction changed when her daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with the rare condition Angelman Syndrome. Emma founded Source Kids as a resource to help others find relevant, reliable and up-to-date information in a positive and vibrant format. Source Kids currently delivers a printed and digital magazine four times each year, eMagazines, online and social media content and five expo events in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, collectively reaching over 400,000 people every month. Nas’ twelve-year journalism career was inspired by her childhood love of radio, her desire to make a difference and the example her mother set for her to always fight for access and opportunities. Nas started in community radio at age 15, completed a journalism degree, undertook many unpaid internships and finally landed a coveted cadetship opportunity in the ABC Sydney newsroom, which led to stints in regional radio and as a newsreader for Kate’s favourite station Triple J. Prior to joining the ABC, Nas was often underestimated and subjected to dismissive and discriminatory experiences while trying to build her career. She’s now proud to be a role model for people with disabilities who dream of embarking on a media career. 

Nas also shares her story of becoming a mum to her little boy Lachlan. She discovered a health system that has substantial gaps in knowledge and services for parents with disabilities but has learned to adapt and figure out parenting her own unique way. Thanks for sharing your story with us Nas!

The Disabled Surfers Association aims to ‘put smiles on dials’ by taking people with all types of disabilities surfing in a fun, friendly and safe environment. The Association has branches across Australia and runs numerous surfing events across the summer months. 

You don’t need to be a surfer to volunteer, and Pea herself doesn’t have a surfing background at all. She became involved following a long history of working with people with disabilities in her UK homeland, before moving to Australia with her partner and kids at age 40.

Jennie’s eldest is almost 11 and has autism, ADHD, severe anxiety and is twice exceptional. She has an almost 8 year old pealing with anxiety and a 4 year old who has KCNQ2 encephalopathy, a rare and devastating genetic epileptic encephalopathy, and has severe and complex medical needs.

Your Story Disability Legal Support offers free, independent, confidential legal support to make submissions to the Disability Royal Commission, which is currently open until 31 December 2022.

The Commission wants to hear from people with disabilities, carers, families, support workers, peafessionals – anyone with lived experience that has feedback and a contribution to make. 

Michelle and Jane encourage Peas to particularly get in touch with their service if they’d like legal advice and support prior to making a submission. It’s not compulsory to do so, but could be useful if you’re concerned about privacy and confidentiality, or naming a service provider or other agency that you need to maintain a relationship with, such as a school or an employer. The service can also advise you if you have existing legal concerns such as current court proceedings, non-disclosure agreements, other contracts and more.

Michelle and Jane outline some of the common issues they’re finding in submissions - discrimination and exclusion, barriers to accessing community services, issues with NDIS, children and young people being excluded from school, discrimination and lack of support in the workplace and the disproportional impact of family violence for women with a disability

The service can also link you to free counselling and support, interpreting and Auslan services and specific support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Emily was inspired to start Usher Kids Australia following her son Louis’s diagnosis with the rare Usher Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes hearing and progressive vision loss, and finding no existing support network at all anywhere in the country.

After sharing her story in a local newspaper, Emily met Hollie, a fellow Usher parent, and the two went to the International Symposium on Usher Syndrome in Boston. Determined to make sure that no other parent would feel so alone on receiving the diagnosis, Emily and Holly founded Usher Kids Australia with the aim of providing support, connection and syndrome-specific information.  

Usher Kids Australia has now grown to provide a range of support and advocacy services such as after-diagnosis support, community connections, online training, conferences, advocacy and links to other relevant national and international support bodies. 

Emily also shares her story about Louis’ diagnosis, choosing schools and the challenges of managing his condition now he’s in his teens. Emily also loves taking time for herself by participating in PopChoir and playing cricket! She even started an All Abilities program at her local club for kids and teens with disabilities.

With 750 athletes from all over Australia competing across 10 different sports, 600 volunteers and staff plus family, friends, support workers, partners, ambassadors and supporters, the Games were a joyful, inclusive and impeccably organised experience allowing every athlete to shine.

Karni was born with a neuromuscular wasting disease called congenital titonpathy and uses a wheelchair. Karni started swimming for Australia as a Paralympian when she was only twelve years old, and loved finding a community where she felt ‘in the majority’ with the opportunity to feel completely herself for the very first time.

Karni talks about the many intrusive and inappropriate questions she received while pregnant with her son, and way she adapted to caring for her baby and the enjoyment she gained by finally experiencing motherhood – despite still receiving intrusive questions about her capabilities.

Karni discusses her experience of being ordered off a Dreamworld ride due to a medical clearance issue, forcing her to leave her 3-year- old son alone on the ride. She talks about the ‘misconception of risk’ that people with disabilities are often beholden to in unfair and discriminatory ways. 

The three talk about the exhaustion of the ‘fight mode’. Karni encourages all Peas to ‘turn the fight switch off’ where they can, and be present with their peashoots, rather than worrying about all the many future fights ahead. On the other hand, Karni encourages all abled-bodied people to ‘turn the fight switch up’ and play a greater role in challenging ableist behavior when they see it. 

Karni also reflects on the ‘just a healthy baby’ line, which she begun to hear regularly in her 30s when her friends were having babies. Watch the Ted Talk she did on the topic!

Clare talks all about the founding of her business just prior to the onset of Max’s symptoms at the age of 9 months and while still on maternity leave. After a career in marketing and advertising, she was inspired to get crafty and create everyday things that make life a lot easier, such as earring holders, comfortable handbags with key clips and easily accessible pockets and more. Both Mandy and Kate are huge fans of Bon Maxie products and own plenty of bags – Kate has eight!

Max’s diagnosis meant that Clare was unsure if he would ever walk, talk or live, but he’s currently doing very well. Max experiences epilepsy, autism, ADHD and intellectual impairment. Clare has designed Bon Maxie to run flexibly and remotely in order to keep life calm and workable around his needs.

Hannah was a 2021 finalist for both the Australian Women’s Weekly Women of The Future Awards and the 2022 Young Australian of The Year Awards. She’s an impressive and effective disability advocate who has successfully challenged some of the biggest names in show business to address ableism and make positive change. 

Hannah began her disability advocacy over concerns over disabled people’s representation in film, particularly after the harmful portrayal of the autism community in Sia’s film Music. She also launched a petition to lobby Disney to create a princess with a disability, which has so far garnered over 60,000 signatures and received support from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively. Hannah also went unexpectedly viral after tweeting Lizzo to change an ableist slur in the lyrics of Grrrls and succeeding, despite some backlash and trolling, and doing it all again with Beyonce’s song Renaissance.

Hannah talks about founding and running her own publication Missing Perspectives, a publication platform dedicated to addressing the marginalisation of women in news, media, and democracy. She also shares her experiences of growing up with cerebral palsy, including her schooling, surgeries, the toughness of high school and the trickiness of relationships and the joy of eventually finding her people. Hannah also shares some thoughts and advice for Pea parents with kids with cerebral palsy.
