Over this past weekend the Nascar Cup series was at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. The race was dominated by William Byron leading 283 of 400 laps and sweeping the first three stages of the longest race in Nascar. On lap 395 Byron was met with a challenge. He was passed by Ross Chastain, who held the lead and won the Coca-Cola 600. Chastain started the race in 40th place. That is dead last. The day before the race, he ruined his car, forcing the team to go to a back-up car. They worked tirelessly all night and into race morning getting the car built for this track. The crew running on 3 hours or less of sleep…and pushing through the longest race of the season. But they banded together and their team unity and belief in strategy brought them through a field of challenging and talented drivers to victory lane. Unity is vital to success. How does it make you feel to know that someone is praying for you? During my younger years of life, our summer vacation and occasional holiday vacation was a trip to visit family. It seemed like everyone else went to the beach or someplace far from home. Because we lived so far from family, we didn’t get to see them very often. How many of us love goodbyes? One of many great memories I have from my younger years were the times my family got to visit my grandparents. While many families would travel to the beaches or mountains for vacation in the summer, we would travel to Pennsylvania to to be with my grandparents. After a week or so with them, that one morning was coming fast. The goodbye morning. It’s a conflicting moment! You are ready to be home, but also, you don’t want to leave Gram and Pap. As a kid, you wonder why you just can’t stay…but the older I got, and with each goodbye, created a greater longing for those return visits. In John 14, Jesus shares this moment with his disciples. He is saying his goodbyes and why He must go. He shares this with them before it happens so that when it actually happens, that they might believe. A goodbye is a great cause for a wonderful “welcome home” reunion! Today, Senior pastor, Heath Bauer takes us through, “A Soldier’s Goodbye.”

If you had the opportunity, what would you tell your family and friends in your last moments on earth? Would you reminisce all the good times? I trust that you have had a wonderful Christmas season that has been full of Christ! As we approach the end of this year, many of us are taking that reminiscent journey that began a year ago. How did that gym membership pan out for you? How are you doing on your goals you set a year ago? Did you become the person you said you would be? Why is it so hard to move forward from the past? New year resolutions are great. It gives us something to move forward towards. To move forward, means I must leave what is behind me. When I surrender to Christ and allow Him to chisel and shape my life, I leave the past behind and live for where He leads. As we head to the new year, think about your past. Have you ever had to do something for someone else? I’m not talking about a good deed, although it can be classified as that if your motives are right. I use to work as a carpet cleaning technician for a prominent carpet cleaning business in our area. Summer was always busy. I got a call from our supervisor and he asked me if I could come in and work in his place for the day so he can take care of some personal matters. When I got in, he handed me the keys to his van and equipment, and reminded me that I am doing this “in his name.” His reputation along with the company, and mine, are at stake. No pressure right? I didn’t want his reputation to be damaged by my actions, so I did my best. Why? I believed in the work ethic he had and I followed suit. The things we believe in determines the work we will do for it. Where does your belief lead you to?

All paths have a purpose of destination. Every person you see is on a path. As an outdoorsman, I enjoy going out into the woods, or as my kids call it, “the deer woods.” Depending on what path I take will determine the difficulty of travel and time. If we are honest with one another, the easier the better right? I have learned, that kind of thinking is tricky. Most of the time, if not all the time, easier isn’t better, it’s just easier. In John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way the truth and the life…” The only way, the only path, the only gate that leads to the God, is Jesus. If we follow Christ faithfully, we will walk through the narrow gate and journey on the narrow path. Matthew 7:13-14 says, 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. Crossway Bibles, 2016, p. Mt 7:13–14.) Are you part of the few?

What is it about light that is so attractive to people? Have you ever thought about that? You have neighbors who go all out during the holiday seasons and their homes are all a-glow! Some even invest a lot of money and time with special Christmas light shows that you can enjoy from the sidewalk or car. The movement of the lights, and even in the stillness of the light, we can catch ourselves drawn and fixed to the light. “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. Crossway Bibles, 2016, p. Jn 8:12.) For centuries, humankind has been seeking a “light” to help them out of darkness. Are your eyes set on the Light of the world?

When I became a home owner, our home had little to no landscaping. This is where the “Honey-do” list started. We spent some money and invested the time and labor to spruce up our home’s curb appeal. It looked great! After a year, we noticed something very annoying. Weeds. They sprouted everywhere and tried to take over the landscaping! Naturally, we went out and picked out all the weeds and cleaned up the landscaping. It looked great again! You know, weeding is a process. We have to keep going back and cleaning them out, using natural preventive measures to keep them away longer…but they keep coming back. If we let them grow, they will choke the life out of our landscaping and changing the whole look of our property. What is the most humble act you can do for someone else? I know, it’s completely counter cultural to embrace being humble. If you look out your window, you see a world that is calling for each person to do what’s true to them. Humility is something that is not natural. It is within our human nature to be filled with pride. Pride not kept in check is dangerous. When was the last time you washed someone’s feet? Washing someone else’s feet is an act of humility. Who do you put your trust in? In 1956, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a joint resolution from Congress stating “In God We Trust” as the United States national motto. For the first time, on October 1, 1957, this motto was printed on the back side of the dollar bill. The phrase itself is said to have been dated back to the Civil War era. Before it was printed on paper currency, “In God We Trust” was found on coins, as space allowed. In 1864 it first appeared on a 2-cent coin. But, was this the heartbeat of the United States? Did every person trust in God? Is it bad or evil to trust in God? If there is someone we can put our trust in; someone who sacrificed more than we will ever be willing to let go of; someone who can redeem and rescue those who are broken and in need of a Savior, it is God.

Has there every been a time where you wronged someone? I remember when I was around the age of 10, I was outside playing with one of my younger sisters. We were at my great grandmother’s house enjoying the summer evening playing tag in the back yard. For some reason, my sister “hit” me really hard. So, I grabbed her by the shoulders and turned her against the outside wall of a sun room. Her head went back and hit the bottom part of the window, and it broke. Glass was everywhere. I knew immediately I had wronged my sister. I also immediately knew I was going to experience a punishment I have never seen yet…and I did. 34 years later, I am still sorry for what I did. There was no hiding what I did. I asked for forgiveness, seeking atonement.

This week we are in the series Shadows of Christ. In this series, we are looking at the Jewish festivals that are held throughout the Jewish calendar year. The significance to this series reveals who Jesus is and why you and I should surrender our lives to Him.

What is it that keeps your mind on Christ? How often do you go back to the moments that drew you near to God? If you have been part of a youth group or student ministry, one of these moments would be summer camp. Sure camp is fun, and full of friends and great memories, but what about those moments God used at camp to draw you back to what is holy, genuine, pure, real, life-changing? Something similar happens in Jewish tradition. At the Feast of Trumpets, a shofar is blown every seven minutes to call people back to God. It was an interruption of what they were doing to call them to turn their lives to God. Today, we visit the series on Shadows of Christ. In this series we are looking at the Jewish feasts on or near the time they are observed. What we find within each feast/festival is a fulfillment in Christ.

Can we just admit, when you are intentionally parenting your children you have been blessed by God with, the challenge is real. What is the one thing you seek most in life? Is it wealth? Is it prosperity in everything you do? Is it to be in the best health? Could is be to have a certain possession? In the movie The Lord Of the Rings, Return of the King, we get to see into the life of one of the main characters. When we take those boundaries away, our freedoms are risk of being taken away. Step back with me to the Old Testament in the Bible. When the people of Israel were freed from slavery in Egypt, they were free. They no longer had to follow the rule of Pharaoh. In their freedom, God gave them 10 boundaries that would help them grow closer to Him and lead others around them to a God who saves. As we read often, Israel struggled with their freedom of worship and found themselves drowning in idol worship. What happens when idol worship becomes our freedom of choice?

We could call this the “point man.” Point man is often used in military circles. This is the soldier who goes ahead of the patrol team. This person guides, warns, protects, leads, provides crucial information, and they are willing to lay down their life so their team makes it through. The point man helps determine the success of the mission. Fathers determine the success of the family. This week Senior Pastor, Heath Bauer, is completing the series, “A Life That Pleases God.” In this series we have been looking at what Faith is. The author of Hebrews defines faith this way, “11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”* In this journey, we have come to see it is impossible to please God without faith.
