Sadly, I’ve taken the very difficult decision to pause my podcast recording. I’ve been handed the most fantastic opportunity with a long-term client, whose business I’m passionate about. However, with the increased responsibilities and time constraints something has to give.

After 20 years as an EA in London, Sam embarked on a new adventure as a VA in 2019. As her business grew, so did her love of writing. I was absolutely delighted to welcome Gwen Backhouse to the show this week.

Gwen has been a Virtual Assistant now for nine years, with twenty-three years of experience in the business admin/PA industry. Now working with a team of associates, Gwen has won the top awards in the industry, and even made UK VA Awards history when she went from winning the Best Newcomer Award in 2015 and then went on to win Outstanding UK VA Award in 2018 in the space of three years, a still unbeaten record. Gwen is now a judge for the UK VA Awards and has also judged for the West Midlands PA Awards too.

With Samantha’s eye for detail and organised nature it was no surprise that she carved a career in Events Management. Having achieved a First Class honours degree in Events Management with International Hospitality Management at University, Samantha immediately secured a job in a live events agency specialising in public sector events, which allowed her to work at some fantastic venues across the UK, including Lord’s and The Oval Cricket Grounds, the NEC, Birmingham and the Etihad Stadium.

Always one for getting stuck in, and searching for a bit more glitz and glamour, Samantha found her skills suited the delivery of events and soon progressed into a career defining role as Operations Manager at Merlin Events London, which is where Samantha has sculpted her career until co-founding Eventify 5 years ago. Working her way up the ranks, Samantha finally held the position of Head of Events for a number of years delivering some awe inspiring and spectacular events for a number of extremely high-profile client’s and guests, including Royalty! Before this, Katharine's career was in Investor Relations with Citigroup and BNP Paribas in London and during this time she has been involved with various charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Facing the World, MS Society, Home Farm Trust and The Cot Death Society.

Katharine sits on the boards of Six MHS and Tetbury Hospital and has been Chairman of the Friends of Tetbury Hospital for a number of years.

For this episode, I was delighted to welcome Alicia Fairclough, the founder of EA How To. She is responsible for bringing together one of the largest (and most valuable) global communities of Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants and Virtual Assistants in the world.

I have personally known Alicia for a couple of years when she approached me to do a Facebook live about running a successful virtual assistant business. We hit it off and our relationship has grown from strength to strength and we are now co-founders of Assistant Recruitment; recruiting EAs, PAs and VAs into organisations in Europe and the US.

Luke Manton is the Founder of Manton Executives, a Virtual PA and Marketing Agency. Luke was diagnosed with adult onset Tourette's Syndrome and is a huge advocate for the condition, often speaking at conferences worldwide to educate others on Tourettes. Ask Mrs S VA evolved in late 2020 from the realisation that as a small business owner, it's the small tasks that can cause the biggest headache.

Based in the Cotswolds, Amanda's target market is small independent businesses and organisations that support two principal sectors. With her background in development industry, she supports ancillary services such as interior designers, specialist trades such as decorative finishers, joiners, bathroom/kitchen suppliers, arboriculturalists, landscape architects, and ecologists. The second sector is more left-field but a passion of hers; independent therapists, including psychiatrists, acupuncturists, podiatrists, counsellors, aromatherapists, and sports therapists.

Maggie transitioned from a Corporate Executive Assistant of 35 years to setting up as a Virtual Assistant in September 2020 and is now enjoying all the different experiences and interactions that brings.

Maggie successfully led a campaign to obtain 100k signatures on a Government eptition which secured a Parliamentary Debate on the lack of funding and awareness of pancreatic cancer after realising her husband's diagnosis offered him no better a chance of survival 40 years on from his mother's diagnosis, such was the lack of change and awareness around the disease.

I really enjoyed chatting to Jenni and learning more about her business, the challenges she’s faced, things she’s learnt and how she’s developing her business. Jenni is another highly experienced EA who has moved from the corporate world to setting up and running her own VA business.

Jenni founded her business, which is based in Hampshire, in April 2021 after 8 years in her last role as Office Manager/PA. Being a Virtual Assistant gives Jenni the opportunity to focus her time on the clients she enjoys working for, as she truly loves her job and relishes the thought of being fully immersed in clients' business, and perhaps their lifestyles too! She assists them with overwhelm in their very busy lives so that her clients can enjoy some clarity and wellbeing. Jenni is passionate about sustainability and the environment she works in, and creating that work/life balance for an overall sense of wellbeing.
