Exploring Our Global Solidarity with Danilo José Hernández Cantarero

In this episode, we continue exploring our global Viatorian solidarity by speaking with Danilo José Hernández Caretero of Honduras. Though Danilo is not a Viatorian, he belongs to a Viatorian parish and has worked with Viatorians for a while. For 16 years and counting, Danilo has worked for SERSO Honduras, the Viatorians’ charitable and community development organization. Danilo is a civil engineer, so he worked first for SERSO as a construction technician and then became project manager. Then three years ago, he began working also as a middle and high school math teacher in our school, Centro Educativo San Viator. The Province of Spain sent professed Viatorians to Honduras in 1998, and they planted the Viatorian charism in Jutiapa. Over time, lay associates have joined, and the Viatorians have developed ministries in the school, ongoing parish work, outreach around the Jutiapa municipality, and SERSO Honduras, modeled after the SERSO organization in Spain. He is director of the school, Groupe Scolaire Saint-Viateur in Bouaké, which includes nursery, primary, and secondary schools, and he serves as vicar to the quasi-parish that utilizes the school chapel there. Exploring Our Global Solidarity with Burkina Faso and Associate Julien Magloire Oubda

Julien has backgrounds in sociology and management, and he most recently worked as a contractor with United Nations Food and Agriculture programs. He committed as a Viatorian Associate in 2023, alongside his wife, Esther, with whom he has three children, and he participated in Viatorian General Assembly in 2025 as a delegate for the Region of Burkina Faso. Mark Francis, CSV, for whom he was General Councilor, preceding our own Fr. Mick Egan, CSV. Fr. We continue exploring our global Viatorian solidarity in this conversation with Br. John Alexander Avellaneda, CSV, of Colombia, a foundation of the Province of Chicago (US). Br. John professed first vows in 2019 and perpetual vows in 2022; he was ordained a transition deacon in 2025 and will be ordained a priest later in 2026. After studying philosophy, theology, and education in Colombia, he came to the US a few years ago to learn English and continue theological studies at Catholic Theological Union. My Viatorian Vocation Story with Associate Rosy Hartz (from General Assembly)

At the Fourth Viatorian General Assembly in October 2025 in France, leadership invited six delegates to share their vocation stories with the full group. Among a mix of women and men, associates and professed religious, and English, French, and Spanish speakers, Associate Rosy Hartz shared her story. Rosy has been an associate since 2009 and served as Director of Youth Ministry at St. Viator Catholic Community in Las Vegas for almost 25 years. She was elected to the assembly by her fellow associates in the US. International Greetings from Delegates to the General Assembly

Community Giving Garden with Fr. Dan Hall, CSV, and Associate John Dussman

On the beautiful grounds of the Viatorian Province Center, tucked away near the back, is a white fence that encloses 25 raised garden beds. Volunteer gardeners from around the community come week-in-and-week-out to tend their gardens, and the produce these plots yield benefit local food pantries. The Community Giving Garden started with an idea from Fr. Dan Hall, CSV, who worked with the Provincial Council to set it up. He's now handed it on to Associate John Dussman to coordinate, and the volunteer team has grown to a wide slate of community partners and a waiting list of more folks who want to join in. And each year, the gardeners donate over one ton of produce to food pantries. Learn more about this ministry caring for God's Creation and opting for our neighbors in need. Carrying the Charism with Associate Cheryl Schwarz and Associate Juliann Dwyer

A Viatorian-Rooted Educator with Daniel Zundel

Daniel Zundel has been serving in various educational ministry roles at Christ the King College Prep in Chicago for 15 years. His vocation as a teacher and companion to young people can be traced back through his time as a volunteer, his studies of teaching as an undergrad at Loyola University Chicago, and all the way back to Saint Viator High School! There, he credits his Viatorian teachers and campus ministers with helping him develop a dedication to serving others and living out a faith that does justice. Inclusive Viatorian Education with Angela Sligar

St. Viator School is the only inclusive Catholic school in Nevada. At our Viatorian parish school, the Micah Program assists students, each with unique learning styles and varying exceptionalities, to grow into the fullness of life in Jesus, to be members of the faith community, and to teach the redeeming message of God's love. Students with conditions such as Down syndrome or autism spectrum disorder receive educational approaches tailored to help students mostly learn in the general education classroom with peers and then have intensive portions of their day spent in individualized instruction. Over the past few months, our Viatorian Vocation Ministry has undertaken a wide-reaching research project to better understand the landscape of vocation ministry today, report significant findings to Viatorians, and identify key strategies and questions to direct our ministry most effectively going forward. We drew upon interviews with peers and colleagues, fresh data on religious life, articles from Catholic and secular news sources, and media online, including first-person reflections and videos and other articles from peer congregations. Preparing for Priesthood with Br. John Eustice, CSV

Young Adults in Music Ministry

Viatorians are committed to walking with young people and are called to serve the holy altar, often through liturgical ministry leadership. In some cases, all these ministerial preferences align and form people to serve. Associate Anthony Gugino went from VYC participant to VYC leader to VYC music director, and later added local leadership to his resume when he took charge of the Sunday evening Mass at St. Viator Catholic Community. Associate Ky Guerrero followed a similar pipeline and joined Anthony in leading VYC music while also becoming a music ministry leader at Viatorian-founded parish, St. Thomas More, through its LifeTeen youth group. Before joining the Viatorian staff in 2019, Dan Masterton worked in Catholic high school campus ministry. He worked at schools in California, Indiana, and Illinois for seven years and directed over 30 retreats in that time. In 2021, Dan authored Exploring Faith: A Guide to Retreat Ministry with Young People, which was published by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). In this episode, Dan adapts the guidebook and a presentation on it to help retreat leaders through some key areas of good retreats, complete with some self-examination questions to consider ways to adjust or grow.

VYC 2023 was led by Program Coordinator Associate Karen Cutler and outgoing Director of Vocation Ministry Br. John Eustice. The event MC was Associate Tommy Gugino. The Young Adult Coordinator, or YAC, was Buddy Miller. The Young Adult Leaders, or YALs, were Milly Colbert, Abby Hartz, Amy Ochoa, Taylor Bair, Michelle Rivadeneira, Trevor Lyon, and Kyle Wallisch. Additionally, several other professed Viatorians, as well as many Viatorian associates, helped out with variety of roles, including giving workshops, celebrating Masses and Sacraments, leading prayer, driving buses, and more. Julie has also volunteered for religious education, sacramental preparation, and more, and now she serves the parish as president of the parish council. Fr. Greg Jones, CSV is a Michigan native. He professed first vows with the Viatorians in 1990, at the age of 40. Greg studied theology and earned an MDiv from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and then was ordained a priest in 1996. He served in many capacities, including at Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights, St. Viator Parish in Chicago, and in various campus ministries. Greg is now retired and lives in Tucson, Arizona and continues working with Church charitable outreach and Sacramental celebration. In this episode, Fr. It was articulated by the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, archbishop of Chicago from 1982 until his death in 1996 from pancreatic cancer. Fr. Mark Francis, CSV had many interactions with Cardinal Bernardin during his time as a professor, as Viatorian Superior General, and also with peers and proteges of the cardinal while Fr. Francis was president of Catholic Theological Union, where the Bernardin Center is based. In this conversation, we tap into this connection to unpack the consistent ethic of life. Roundtable on Viatorian Roots and Legacy at St. Thomas More

As the regional population grew around Las Vegas, residents in the Green Valley area of Henderson saw a need to start a new parish in their area. Early gatherings started in 1984 and were held in a preschool and later a mortuary chapel. In 1986, the Diocese of Las Vegas established St. Thomas More Catholic Community with Viatorian priest Fr. Tom Long, CSV as its first pastor.

The parish first built a multi-purpose center where they then celebrated Mass for several years until their church was completed and dedicated in 1996. Several Viatorians have served as pastors and associate pastors, and many lay parishioners have become Viatorian associates. In 2019, the Viatorians handed administration of the parish to the Diocese of Las Vegas, concluding 33 years of leadership there. Today, we seek to celebrate the origins, ministry, and community life of this Viatorian-founded parish, and honor the good work that continues today. Agricultural Stewardship with Associate David Surprenant

After decades of milking Holstein dairy cows, they sold them to start a cow-calf operation with Black Angus livestock. Care for God's Creation is central to their agricultural vocation, mindfully tending the soil and the cows. In this conversation, Dave shares some of the ways his family strives for good stewardship, caring sustainably for their land, for their animals, and for their stability and livelihood. Exploring God's Invitation with Fr. Moses Mesh, CSV

Fr. Moses Mesh, CSV professed first vows in 2005 and was ordained a priest in 2011. He is a native of Belize, and he first encountered the Viatorians while the congregation led a foundation in the country (1998-2015). Initially, Fr. Moses served the parish that the Viatorians led, St. Francis Xavier Parish in Corazal Town, Belize. He later came to the US, where he previously served as parochial vicar in St. Viator Parish in Chicago and now serves at Maternity BVM Parish in Bourbonnais, IL. Learn more about how Fr. Religious Brothers Day: Roundtable with Br. Rob and Br. Peter

For this roundtable, we are marking Religious Brothers Day, celebrated each year on May 1 along with the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. The Viatorian Community is comprised of professed brothers and priests as well as lay associates, so today we join the Church in celebrating the religious brothers of our community and all those who serve worldwide.

Our guests:

Br. Rob Robertson, CSV has been in Viatorian religious life for 34 years. In his religious life, Br. Rob has served as a teacher, campus minister, and counselor at Viatorian schools in Illinois and Nevada. He currently serves as a counselor at Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and also serves the Viatorian Community as a Provincial Councilor.
Br. Peter Lamick, CSV has been in Viatorian religious life for 6 years and professed perpetual vows in 2019. Br. Peter has served as a teacher, learning specialist, and coach at Cristo Rey St. Viator College Prep in North Las Vegas, Nevada and at Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, where he currently works.

Viatorian Roots at Bishop Gorman High School with Associate Connie Gerber and Associate Kim Martinez

Viatorians founded Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV in 1954, the first in the area and the only one until the opening of Cristo Rey St. Viator in 2019. Viatorians no longer lead the school, but some of us continue working on the faculty and staff. In this episode, we hear from Associate Connie Gerber, retired after 41 years at Bishop Gorman, including serving as its principal, and Associate Kim Martinez, who continues ministering and teaching for 25+ years. The Viatorian Youth Congress is a place where youth and campus ministers bring delegations of high-school aged young people from all of our Viatorian communities, but this great experience only happens with the leadership and coordination of young adults! Two young adult coordinators (YACs) and several young adult leaders (YALs) team up to make the four days special and fun for the delegates. Patrick Aller was a YAL in 2014, 2015, and 2016 before serving as a YAC in 2017; Jean Ang was a YAL in 2017 and 2018 before serving as a YAC in 2019. To mark World Day for Consecrated Life, we gathered together a panel of two sisters, one priest, and one brother, representing four religious communities. Together, they offered witness to religious life today and offered reflections and insights to the Church, with a particular eye to young people and those exploring God's invitation to religious life. Sr. June Fitzgerald, OP was born in North Carolina and grew up in Virginia. She met the Dominican Sisters at a retreat for young single women and soon became a volunteer and frequent visitor to their community. As a religious sister, June has served in retreat ministry, spiritual direction, congregational leadership, and now as the vocation director for her congregation. Today, she has the great joy of living in one of their Houses of Welcome for discerning women, candidates, and sisters in the beginning stages of formation. The Dominican Sisters of Peace are part of the world wide Dominican Order, engage in a wide variety of ministries, and always strive to be peace, build peace, and preach peace in their lives and ministries. Sr. Mary Yun, OP is a convert and became Catholic at age 8 along with her family. She immigrated to the US from South Korea and grew up in Southern California. She joined the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 2006 and has ministered as a social worker/therapist in many settings, and now serves as the Candidate Director. Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose belongs to the wider Dominican family, or Order of Preachers, which has an 800-year legacy of service in many settings such as Catholic schools, parishes, and social services, preaching the Truth in love to the young, the poor, and the vulnerable. Fr. Rodrigo Ulloa, MM moved with his whole family from Guatemala to the US in 1999, where he later joined the US Air Force. His studies during military service were interrupted by the September 11 attacks, after which he was suddenly assigned to Abu Dhabi; there, a US Air Force chaplain who became his role model. After completing his service, Rodrigo entered the seminary and crossed paths with a Maryknoll father. That inspired him to join Maryknoll in 2004, after which he completed his overseas training program and was ordained a Maryknoll priest in 2011. Maryknoll is a Catholic Society of Apostolic Life of missionary priests and brothers who, for over 100 years, have modeled themselves after the compassion and love of Jesus Christ in reaching out to those in the world who are most in need. This happens by direct evangelization and various pastoral ministries like healthcare, education, agriculture, and many more. Learn more at maryknollsociety.org.
Br. John Eustice, CSV was born in Illinois and grew up in Las Vegas. He has been a Viatorian since 2005. He has served in pastoral ministries in Viatorian schools and parishes in Chicagoland, in Bourbonnais, Illinois, and in Belize. John now is studying for priesthood, while continuing to serve as Director of Vocation Ministry for the Viatorians. Viatorians are professed brothers and priests, as well lay associates, who proclaim Jesus Christ and His Gospel and raise communities where faith is lived, deepened, and celebrated. Typically, Viatorian ministries focus on teaching the faith, leading liturgy, walking with youth, and working for justice with those people who society accounts of little importance.
