eg.

The preposition over has three meanings - A preposição over tem três significados.

Meaning 01

Above and not touching - acima e sem tocar 

eg. 

There is a mirror over the basin in my bathroom - Há um espelho acima da pia no meu banheiro.

Over + period of time, usually describes a slow change - over + período de tempo, geralmente descreve uma mudança lenta.

If something makes sense we understand it or believe that it is right or practical - Se algo faz sentido, entendemos ou acreditamos que está certo ou é prático.

eg. 

If you don’t have much money it makes sense to buy food at a market because it’s cheaper - Se você não tem muito dinheiro, faz sentido comprar comida em um mercado porque é mais barato.

We exaggerate when we say that something is bigger, better, worse etc than it really is - Exageramos quando dizemos que algo é maior, melhor, pior etc do que realmente é.

If you avoid doing something, you find a way not to do it - Se você evita fazer algo, você encontra uma maneira de não fazê-lo.           

eg. 

Children often try to avoid doing their homework - As crianças muitas vezes tentam evitar fazer sua lição de casa. 

Lazy people avoid hard work - Os preguiçosos evitam trabalhar muito.  

Trouble - dificuldade, problema, encrenca 

get in trouble (with someone) - ter problemas (com alguém)

If you are in trouble other people are angry, because you have done something badly - Se você está em apuros(com problemas), outras pessoas estão com raiva, porque você fez algo errado.           

to have trouble + gerund - ter problemas + gerúndio 

If you have trouble doing something, you find it difficult to do - Se você tem problemas para fazer alguma coisa, você acha difícil fazê-la. 

Trouble is usually a singular, uncountable noun - Trouble é geralmente um substantivo singular e incontável.  

We don’t describe one particular situation as ‘a trouble’. Instead, we use the word ‘problem’ - Não descrevemos uma situação em particular como “a trouble”. Em vez disso, usamos a palavra “problem”.

eg.

eg. 

Pollution affects the environment - A poluição afeta o meio ambiente. 

What you eat has an effect on your health - O que você come tem um efeito na sua saúde.

sarcastic - sarcástico 

Your sense of humour is the kind of things that you think are funny - Seu senso de humor são os tipos de coisa que você acha engraçados.

If you have a good sense of humour you often laugh at things and make other people laugh - Se você tem um bom senso de humor, você com frequência ri das coisas e faz outras pessoas rirem.

The way people treat you is the way they behave towards you - A maneira como as pessoas tratam você é a maneira como elas se comportam em relação a você.

eg.

I left my job because my boss treated me badly - Deixei meu emprego porque meu chefe me tratou mal.

to treat someone like + noun - tratar alguém como + substantivo

treat = to try to cure an illness or an ill person = tentar curar uma doença ou uma pessoa doente.

Gentle - suave, gentil, delicado

Rough - duro, áspero, rude, grosseiro

Situation - situação

We use the word situation to talk about what is happening in a particular place at a particular time - Usamos a palavra situação para falar sobre o que está acontecendo em um determinado lugar em um determinado momento.

eg.

It was an embarrassing situation when I didn’t have enough money to pay for dinner - Foi uma situação embaraçosa quando eu não tive dinheiro suficiente para pagar o jantar.

We can use both WILL and TO BE GOING TO when we predict the future, but there is an important difference between the two kinds of prediction - Podemos usar WILL e TO BE GOING TO quando prevemos o futuro, mas há uma diferença importante entre os dois tipos de previsão.

Predictions using TO BE GOING TO are usually used when we make a prediction about the future because of evidence we know or see in the present - Previsões usando TO BE GOING TO geralmente são usadas quando fazemos uma previsão sobre o futuro por causa de evidências que conhecemos ou vemos no presente.

eg.

Look at those dark clouds in the sky, it’s going to rain soon - Olhe para aquelas nuvens escuras no céu, vai chover em breve.

Predictions using WILL are usually used when we make a prediction about the future that expresses our opinions but we are not sure because we don’t have much evidence - Previsões usando WILL geralmente são usadas quando fazemos uma previsão sobre o futuro que expressa nossas opiniões, mas não temos certeza. porque não temos muitas evidências.

Because we are not sure we often say - Porque não temos certeza, muitas vezes dizemos:

I think that something will happen 

or 

I think that something will probably happen.

I think a South American country will win the World Cup in the next 8 years - Acho que um país sul-americano vai ganhar a Copa do Mundo nos próximos 8 anos.

I think they’ll probably get here at about 8 o’clock - Acho que eles provavelmente chegarão aqui por volta das 8 horas.

when the clock strikes two is a more dramatic way of saying when it turns two o'clock - Quando o relógio bate duas horas é uma maneira mais dramática de dizer quando for 14:00.

eg.

To order someone to do something - Mandar alguém fazer alguma coisa. 

To order means to tell someone to do something but it is much stronger than telling. If you are ordered to do something you must do it - To order significa dizer a alguém para fazer algo, mas é muito mais forte do que o verbo dizer. Se você é ordenado a fazer algo, você tem que fazê-lo. 

eg. 

The soldiers were ordered to swim across the river - Os soldados foram mandados nadar para o outro lado do rio.

Meaning 02: 

To order something from someone - Pedir algo através de alguém.       

You order food in a restaurant from a waitress or waiter. - Você pede comida em um restaurante através de uma garçonete ou garçom.

TO FORCE has a similar meaning to MAKE SOMEONE DO SOMETHING but it is stronger - TO FORCE tem um significado semelhante a TO MAKE SOMEONE, mas TO MAKE SOMEONE é mais forte. 

 If you are forced to do something, you don’t want to do it but you have no choice - Se você é forçado a fazer algo, você não quer fazer, mas não tem escolha.   

eg.
