As silly as the premise is, this very straightforward episode of 1981’s Spider-Man has a lot to offer, including scenes that are very weird in 2020 -- like a Karen chastising a mask-wearing person about spreading germs, and Spidey fretting over an outrageous hospital bill.

While a lot of kids in 1981 were watching Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, a syndicated solo series was airing at the same time -- and while it’s less-remembered, it definitely has unique things to offer. In the first episode of Spider-Man (1981), Doc Ock plots to steal the world’s oil, a random bottle of acid saves the day, and Spidey literally water skis with a shark. And yet, it’s still nowhere near as silly as Amazing Friends!

We try desperately to keep up as multiple heroes hang on to multiple other heroes above a vat of bubbling green poison, Hobgoblin blows up everything everywhere, and it somehow culminates in a kaiju battle where the X-Men who aren’t Wolverine and Beast get maybe five lines total. Spidey’s back in black in this puuurfect pair of Spectacular Spider-Man episodes! Black Cat brings all innuendo you’d ever need (and has us quoting half the episode) while Spidey faces a dark reflection of himself...literally and figuratively, thanks to the Chameleon and the black suit. Then, we’re in awe over the gorgeously animated fights with the Sinister Six. Along with the usual Doc Ock gushing, symbiote horror, and a complicated discussion about Eddie Brock, this is pretty much everything we’ve ever wanted. We’ll try not to get any goop in your hair.
