After a long journey, we're here, the pen-ultimate chapter of the War of the Worlds, Wreckage.

With the Martians gone the way of the Dodo, what wreckage do they leave behind? And what will our narrator find on his journey home?

Plus we have a song that became more and more like a Johnny Cash tribute the more i wrote it, but with the mental breakdown on the record, as we think about what would be like to be the last man left alive.

They live in the soil, they live in the air, they'll more or less live anywhere, it's germs!

As we've heard in the last chapter, those invisible assailants have done us a big kindness in the War of the Worlds, but are they always friendly tiny buds helping us out? If 2020 - now have shown us anything, no!

Intentions of the forces of nature aside, in a special none chapter episode, Edy sits down to speak with Historian, Curator and Author Kristen Hussey about the history of germ theory, and what H.G. Wells' would have known whilst writing the novel.

Kristen is author of 'Imperial Bodies in London:Empire, Mobility, and the Making of British Medicine, 1880–1914' a Whitfield prize winning book focussing on the science and political climate at the time of these discoveries, so the perfect guest for an expert insight.

Chapter 8! Dead London!

Or should it be, dead? London? Or maybe dead! London. As you'll see, there's a bit of death, but is it the metaphorically beating heart of Victorian Englands beloved capital, or is it the as of yet un-identified hearts of the Martian invasion? There's only one way to find out!*

Chapter 6: The Work of Fifteen Days

The narrator is leaving the house where he's hunkered down, and checks out the local wildlife. Will he successfully eat a dog? Will the dogs successfully eat him? I doubt it, there's another 4 chapters.

Intermission: Victorian Science Problem Panic Time feat. Subhadra Das

If there's one thing from Victorian Science that's aged about as well as a puddle of milk in a rain coat pocket, it's the theory of eugenics. We've talked a bit at the very start of the book about how much these ideas have been involved in H.G. Wells' writing, but to do it a little more justice, the fabulous Subhadra Das zoomed in to chat a little more about the history of these ideas, and how they still permeate through thinking and science (especially science fiction) today.

Subhadra is a broadcaster, writer, historian and curator, focussing on how ideas of race, colonialism and capitalism have affected museums and culture. Basically, the best person for us to chat with about our Martian invasion/ colonialist panic novel.

Chapter 5: The Stillness feat.The Delightful Sausage (Chris Cantrill & Amy Gledhill)

This chapter we're joined by Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominated and telly bothering double act The Delightful Sausage. Amy Gledhill & Chris Cantrill are a hilarious grotty duo that you might have seen on Harry Hill's Club Nite on C4, Late Night Mash on Dave, or Alma's Not Normal on the BBC. Chapter 3: The Days of Imprisonment

In what must be the least relatable part of the book for our entire generation, we find the Narrator and the Curate still stuck unable to leave the house. A sort of lockdown I guess, only it's Martians, and I don't want to cast judgement, but I've not seen a single mask or hand sanitiser in sight.

Chapter 1: Underfoot feat. Tom Burgess

We're back! Book 2, Earth under Martians.

Earth (by which in the book we mean the 75 mile radius of London) is well and truly knackered under the Martians. Hampton Court? Barely any visitors. Big Ben? Forget it. London Eye? Not created yet, but if it was, it'd also be knackered.

We return to find the narrator still knocking around with that fair weakness of a man, the Curate, and what better way to celebrate that than with our beloved fair weakness, Tom Burgess?

He's returned as the Curate and also has read through the chapter with us adding asides.

We've also got a short little song for all recovering emos out there, and a deep dive on the many shapes and forms the curate or a religious figure has taken in some of the numerous adaptations.

Chapter 17: The Thunder Child feat. Jen Ives

The Final of Book One is nigh! And let's go out of the half way point with a half way bang.

Chapter 17 of The War of the Worlds sees us with the Narrator's Brother and the Ephinstone's at the end of the Country, in a desperate escape from an England invaded by Martians.

We've got the ironclad Thunderchild, with it's sophisticated strategy of ramming 7 shades of shit out of the Martian Tripods. But is it enough to deter the army of Mars from taking down the would be refugees?

Also joining us for a chat about gender in scifi is the fantastic Jen Ives. Jen is a stand up comedian and host of the podcast Peak Trans. She joins us to talk about the weirdness of deciding that it's exclusively men from Mars and that women are boats. We also have a game of Trans terrestrial icons, where we look at some of scifi's top (and not) trans icons.

Bennet recently won the Audience Choice award at the Amused Moose New Comedy Award, and has created an ace song inspired by the chapter. He's also voicing the Narrator's Brother for this week.

Where do they fit into the hierarchy of the Anglican Church? Well don't worry, I sit down with Tom Burgess to discuss this as he takes on the famous role.

How many Martian tripods does it take to screw in a light bulb? We're heading to the first town in Britain to be wholly lit by electricity (Weybridge) to find out in the next action-crammed chapter of the War of the Worlds.

Plus this week we've got two deep dives! One on the history of travel food via biscuits and the other on how the hell you can find out if an area was as posh as it is now in the past.

Joining me again as the artillery man is stand-up comedian and actor Tony Wright! And as the Lieutenant it's improviser, comedian and radio host, Jade Fearnley!

Chapter 11: At the Window feat. Tony Wright

What would you do if you saw a random army man in your garden? Invite them in for a candlelit dinner and a whisky?

This chapter we see the introduction of the Artillery Man, a character that pops up in some form in nearly every adaptation of the War of the Worlds.

Whether it's David Essex in the Musical Version or Tim Robbins kinda-creepy-conspiracy-theory-guy in the Spielberg version, he's the Martian war survivor with a heart of gold.

Naturally, I invited personal comedy friend Tony Wright on to play the role. We also talk about growing up near(ish) the Horsell Common, and Diggerland, the UK's premier heavy machinery based theme park.

Interlude 3: Justice for Wells feat. Simon Guerrier

Was Wells a bad lad? Did he believe in the horrors of colonialism and eugenics? Is he guilty by association?

Regular listeners will remember that in Chapter 1 we took a deep dive into Victorian Racism, a subject that Wells rubbed shoulders with some of the worst proponents of scientific racism.

BUT as it turns, the answer is a fairly solid no, as it turns out, Wells was often outspoken for socially progressive, going so far as to write public letters calling for the abolition of segregation in America, and creating the blue prints for Universal Human Rights.

For this interlude from our telling of the War of the Worlds, I'm joined by writer and producer Simon Guerrier!

Simon has produced a number of documentaries on the life and times of H.G. Wells including the fabulous BBC Radio 3 documentary, HG and the H Bomb which was used as research for the deep dive in Chapter 6!

In this chat we talk about H.G. Wells and his response to eugenics, his love life, and his pursuit to always discover new and challenging ideas. We also have a little chat about Doctor Who and the role Wells played in shaping that.

Chapter 10: In the Storm

If you've ever heard/read/seen the War of the Worlds before, you'll know that far and away the tripods are the most memorable part. AND THEY'RE HERE!

One leg is bad, two legs good, three legs? Perfect!

As the Martians ascend out of their pit will the narrator return the rented dog cart back? Will he bump into a bizarrely large amount of people in a war zone?

We've also got a run down on some of history's greatest tripods this episode and this weeks song is all about how great three legs are. Basically, it's a big of tripod celebration, what more could you want?
