Episode 171 - The Final Ever Show

It's been a pleasure folks. After five years and almost two hundred shows, it's time to hang up our podcasting boots.

The final ever We Are Going Up podcast is a two-hour special, as we look back on the 2015/16 Football League season with two of our regular guests, Rob Langham from The Two Unfortunates and Mark O'Haire from We Love Betting. We analyse all things Championship, League One and League Two - plus look forward to next season, and discuss the proposed expansion of the Football League from 2019/20.

We also catch up to our old friends Jim Knight, Carl McQueen and Steven Toplis, plus relive some of our favourite moments from the past half a decade.

Thank you very much to everyone who has downloaded, subscribed, emailed in, tweeted us, blogged for us, followed us on Instagram (even though we never used it much) and most importantly, just listened. Cheers.

Special Episode: Play-Off Finals Preview

So, the Football League season is nearly over... and so is the We Are Going Up podcast. In our penultimate show, David Cameron Walker is joined by various guests to preview this weekend's three play-off finals at Wembley.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Plymouth Argyle take on AFC Wimbledon for a place in League One next season. Ahead of the game DC catches up with Chris Errington, football editor at the Plymouth Herald... and also Andy Brassell. You might know Andy as European football expert for the BBC, The Guardian, BT Sport and talkSPORT2 - but he's also a huge AFC Wimbledon fan, and he gives us his verdict on an incredible season for the Dons, plus helps us out with a long lost WAGU idea...

As for Sunday, well that's a shoot-out between Millwall and Barnsley for a place in next season's Championship. Friend of the show (and Millwall fan) Joe Amphlett and talkSPORT's Yorkshire football supremo Alan Biggs look ahead to the action.

Alan also gives us his assessment on Hull City's chances of an immediate return to the Premier League when they face Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday's £170m game. In the Owls corner, Sky Sports News HQ Presenter (and Wednesday fan) David Garrido, who helps sing the praises of his club and (in particular) striker Fernando Forestieri.

Following last season's relegation, Wigan Athletic look set for an immediate return to the Championship after a run of eighteen games unbeaten in League One. Gary Caldwell's side are just one point behind the leaders Burton Albion, as they prepare for the final seven games of the season.

So how have the Latics things around after a difficult start? Can Will Grigg make history with three successive promotions? Plus, how has chairman David Sharpe fared in taking over from his grandad? We speak to Paul Kendrick, football correspondent for the Wigan Evening Post.

Episode 170 - Clarets in charge

This week we take a closer look at the top and bottom of the Football League. With Burnley now four points clear at the top of the Championship, can anyone stop the Clarets making an immediate return to the Premier League? We catch up with Jamie Smith, from the independent Burnley podcast No Nay Never, who gives us his take on Andre Gray, Joey Barton, and Sean Dyche (amongst others).

However, down at the bottom of League Two, it's been a season of struggle for Dagenham & Redbridge. The Daggers, now led again by legendary boss John Still, are bottom of the pyramid and six points adrift of safety with eleven games remaining. Can they produce a miracle to retain their Football League status? We're joined by Ned Keating, who covers the club for the London Archant.

There's also Neil Warnock working his magic at Rotherham to discuss, Sean O'Driscoll's latest sacking and more emails from Estonia - plus we reveal the WORST referee in the Football League...

Episode 169 – Jackett off?

Are Kenny Jackett's days at Molineux numbered? Wolverhampton Wanderers are sliding down the Championship table, after a run of no wins from their last seven games. We find out what's gone wrong for one of the division's promotion favourites this season, by getting the view of Wolves fan and podcaster Richard Hobbs, from the excellent Wolves Fancast.

Notts County chairman Ray Trew announced his intention to sell the club this week, blaming the "foul and mindless abuse" his family had been subjected to. So, after six years in control at Meadow Lane, we assess his time in charge with talkSPORT reporter/sports news aficionado (and Notts County fan) Andrew McKenna. We also get the verdict on Jamie Fullarton and the Magpies' latest struggles in League Two.

Episode 168 - Derby sack Clement

This week the boys reflect on the surprise sacking of Derby County manager Paul Clement, who was relieved of his duties after just eight months and 33 games in charge of the Rams. Chairman Mel Morris says promotion 'was not the primary target' this season, but claimed the club hadn't made enough progress under Clement. We get a view from Jonathan Rodgers, Derby fan and 'Facing Two Ways' blogger.

Elsewhere, we focus on the two sides through to April's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final. Following Lee Johnson's decision to switch Oakwell for Ashton Gate, we find out more about Barnsley's up and down season from Doug O'Kane, sports editor at the Barnsley Chronicle. The Tykes' will face Oxford United at Wembley - we're joined by U's fan George Dugdale from BT Sport, who also discusses his hopes of promotion to League One.

Episode 167 - Bolton on the brink

It's been a traumatic season for fans of Bolton Wanderers. After being served with a winding up order by HMRC, this week the club have been given an extension until February 22nd by the High Court, in order to reach an agreement.

The club also owe £185m to their owner Eddie Davies and have told their players and staff that they're unlikely to be paid again this month. In addition to that, Neil Lennon's side are bottom of the Championship and seven points adrift of safety, having won only twice all season. We get the latest on an ever changing situation from Marc Iles, the chief football writer at The Bolton News.

Elsewhere, Carlisle United will return to Brunton Park for the first time in eight weeks when they face York City in League Two this weekend. Jon Colman, Carlisle writer for Cumbrian Newspapers, tells us about the devastating effects of the recent floods - plus discusses their upcoming FA Cup fourth round tie against Everton.

There's also six weeks of Football League action to discuss, the various managerial comings and goings... plus watch out Greg James - as DC auditions to host the chart...

Mini Episode: 'We Want Our Charlton Back'

Happy New Year! It's been a while. In our first podcast of 2016, DC finds out more about the ongoing crisis at Charlton Athletic. The Addicks are 23rd in the Championship and facing relegation to League One after a run of ten games without a win. However it's the situation off the field which is now receiving more public scrutiny.

The club's owner Roland Duchâtelet is coming under increasing pressure from fans, with thousands gathering outside The Valley to protest against the Belgian in recent weeks. The club's old manager Jose Riga is now back in charge, following the departure of both Guy Luzon and Karel Fraeye so far this season.

Rick Everitt, editor of the 'Voice of the Valley' fanzine, joins us to explain how things have turned sour in SE7. We'll (hopefully) be back with a full show next week...

Paul Lambert is back in football management after signing a two and a half year contract to succeed Gary Bowyer as Blackburn boss. With Rovers struggling in 16th place in the Championship (and still under a transfer embargo), the boys are joined by Paul Wheelock - Blackburn reporter for the Lancashire Telegraph, to discuss whether or not Lambert can succeed in turning things round at Ewood Park.

Mini Episode: #SaveTheCobblers

We bring you a special mini episode this week, featuring an interview with James Averill of the Northampton Town Supporters' Trust.

The Cobblers are in financial crisis, and have been issued with a winding up order by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), who are owed £166,000 by the club. A date for the case has been set at the High Court for Monday November 16th, when the club could be liquidated.

Northampton Borough Council is also owed £10.25 million by the club - and last week it was revealed that players and staff at Sixfields were not being paid.

James explains the problems, discusses the recent death of Cobblers fan Brian Lomax (the man who invented supporters' trusts) and his vision for the future of the club.

The Football League's first two managerial changes of the new season are the big talking points this week.

After just one win from their opening six League One games, Doncaster Rovers have sacked boss Paul Dickov. We find out more about the decision from Liam Hoden, sports reporter at the Doncaster Free Press.

It's a similar story for Peterborough United, who this week axed boss Dave Robertson just half a dozen games into the new season. Episode 160 – Carlisle to Plymouth (and back)

This week the boys are joined by Iain MacIntosh, football writer for ESPN FC and editor of The Set Pieces and author of 'Football Manager Stole My Life'. On Tuesday morning Iain joined 168 other hardy souls in making the 779-mile round trip to watch Carlisle United lose 4-1 away at Plymouth Argyle in Sky Bet League Two. Iain recounts the story of the trip, including the characters he met and the cult of the hardcore away supporter. We also read out your tweets about horror away days.

In League One, Coventry City have made a flying start to the new season. The Sky Blues have won three out of three so far - we talk to Andy Turner, Coventry City reporter at the Coventry Telegraph, to discuss Tony Mowbray, the quality of the squad he has assembled... and whether they can make a promotion push...

There's all that, Bristol City splashing the cash, Charlie Austin's future... and THAT penalty at Swindon to discuss...

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye. It's a packed final podcast of the 2014/15 season - thank you to everyone who has listened to us and supported us this year, as ever.

Norwich City are back in the Barclays Premier League at the first time of asking, after a superb 2-0 win against a below-par Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final on Monday. The Canaries sealed victory with goals from Cameron Jerome and Nathan Redmond in front of over 85,000 at Wembley.

We reflect on their promotion and the incredible turnaround at Carrow Road under Alex Neil, with Michael Bailey, sports journalist at the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News.

We also have an exclusive chat with the departing Brentford manager Mark Warburton, who joins us in the studio to reflect on a fantastic year for the Bees. They finished fifth in their first season in the second tier for over twenty years. We also ask Mark about where he sees himself going next.

There's also an interview with the Birmingham skipper Paul Robinson, who reflects on the job done by Gary Rowett since taking over at St Andrew's. The Blues finished inside the Championship top ten after three straight wins to end the season.

In addition, we reflect on the League One and League Two play-off finals over the weekend, which saw promotions confirmed for both Preston and Southend. Richard Foster, the author of a new book about the play-offs called 'The Agony & The Ecstasy', also joins us.

Wembley awaits! The boys are back, admittedly with a distinctly end of season feel, as we review the drama of the play-off semi finals and look forward to what lies in store for Middlesbrough, Norwich, Preston, Swindon, Wycombe and Southend this weekend.

Boro crushed Brentford 3-0 at the Riverside on Friday night to complete a hugely impressive 5-1 aggregate win, in front of a crowd of over 33,000. Anthony Vickers, sports writer and columnist for the Evening Gazette on Teeside, joins us to preview Monday's big game and tell us more about the amazing job done by Aitor Karanka. (N.B. Apologies for the sound problems on this interview).

We also catch up with big Swindon Town fan and We Are Going Up favourite Carl McQueen, as Mark Cooper's side prepare to face Preston on Sunday for a spot in the Championship. We discuss the Robins' incredible 5-5 thriller with Sheffield United and take a look at the players that have helped push them to the cusp of promotion.

Episode 155 - Final day drama

It's all over for another year. The final weekend of the Football League season saw the usual mix of blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the odd pitch invasion or two (including one with a man on a mobility scooter). The boys are back together in London to look back over an incredible weekend.

MK Dons clinched the final automatic promotion spot in League One with a 5-1 drubbing of Yeovil on Sunday lunchtime at Stadiummk, whilst Preston slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat at Colchester. We're joined by Toby Lock, sports editor for the MK Citizen and Leighton Buzzard Observer. Toby tells us about what promotion means to Pete Winkelman, Karl Robinson and the city of Milton Keynes.

Bury also came from behind to pinch the final automatic promotion spot in League Two. The Shakers won 1-0 on a nervy afternoon at Tranmere, to edge out both Southend and Wycombe for a place in the third tier next season. A VERY happy Mark discusses his afternoon in Birkenhead, plus we're joined by Craig Nelson, the Bury reporter for the Bury Times and the Bolton News. Craig discusses the Shakers' amazing post Christmas turnaround, the impact of Nick Pope and their chances in League One next season.

Episode 153 - Party time at the Pirelli

Thirteen years ago Burton Albion were competing in the Northern Premier League, lining up against teams such as Frickley Athletic, Hucknall Town and Marine. Next season they will be taking on the likes of Coventry City, Bradford City and Blackpool in League One.

The Brewers clinched promotion to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history, with a 2-1 win at Morecambe on Saturday. Now, boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is targeting the title. We find out more from BBC Radio Derby's Burton Albion reporter and commentator Joe Shennan.

Joe is also a Wycombe fan, so gives us his assessment on the latest twist in the League Two promotion race. Are Southend United now favourites to pinch third? The Shrimpers made it six straight wins and seven straight clean sheets with a 1-0 win at Bury on Tuesday night. We hear from their manager Phil Brown, talking to talkSPORT.

Episode 152 - Luton letting it slip?

What has happened to the Hatters? After a fantastic first season back in the Football League, Luton Town lost 2-1 at Northampton on Saturday to make it eight defeats out of nine in the league (including six in a row), a run which has seen them drop out of the League Two play-off spots as a result.

Mark is joined by Mike Simmonds, sports editor at the Luton News, to discuss where it's all gone wrong recently at Kenilworth Road, and preview the crucial run in that lies ahead for John Still's men.

Elsewhere, down at the bottom of League Two - could the great escape actually be happening for Hartlepool United? Pools beat Cambridge 2-1 on Saturday, their fourth win in a row, to move out of the relegation zone for the first time in five months.

How has Ronnie Moore managed to turn things around, and can they go on and complete the job? Mark talks to Nick Loughlin, sports editor of the Northern Echo.

Episode 151 - Bristol City win at Wembley

Bristol City picked up the Johnstone's Paint Trophy for a record third time with a 2-0 win against Walsall on Sunday, in front of a crowd of over 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium. It marks the first silverware of a remarkable season for the Robins, who are hot favourites to clinch promotion to the Championship (and the League One title) in the next few weeks.

We find out more about Sunday's final and an incredible season for Steve Cotterill at Ashton Gate from Paul Binning, author of the Bristol City blog The Exiled Robin.

Elsewhere, Notts County have sacked manager Shaun Derry following a run of just three wins from their last twenty-four games. It leaves the Magpies teetering on the brink of relegation to League Two. The Lions sit 23rd in the Championship table after five defeats from their last six games, a run which has left them eight points from safety and staring relegation to League One in the face.

The boys catch up with Steve Nicholson, chief football writer at The Derby Telegraph, to find out more about a difficult week for the Rams, plus preview their tricky looking run in.

The Posh have been in the headlines following the sacking of their manager Darren Ferguson last Saturday. In two spells in charge, Ferguson won three promotions for Peterborough, plus the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Wembley last season. However, with the club sitting in a miserable fifteenth place in League One after a 3-0 loss at MK Dons, enough was finally enough for their chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

We talk to a range of guests to discuss the decision and where the club should turn next. Episode 148 - Benham's biggest gamble?

Brentford owner Matthew Benham made his millions as a professional gambler, working as managing director of Smartodds, his company which provides statistical research to customers betting exclusively on football all around the world.

However, has he just made his biggest gamble yet?

With the Bees just one point outside the Championship play-off spots and in with a chance of an incredible promotion to the Premier League, the club have confirmed that their manager Mark Warburton (plus assistant boss David Weir and sporting director Frank McParland) will leave Griffin Park at the end of the season.

Warburton feels unable to work under the changed structure being proposed by Benham's 'remodelling of the club's football management', with a new head coach to be appointed to work alongside a new sporting director. The boys speak to Nick Bruzon, Brentford fan and author of 'The Last Word' for his reaction to the news, and ask if it will derail the club's form on the pitch.

On the other side of London, there's a mess that needs to be sorted out at the Matchroom Stadium. On Saturday May 24th last year, Leyton Orient were a penalty shoot-out win away from promotion to the Championship at Wembley. Now they lie second bottom of League One and three points from safety, with only seven wins all season.

The O's have had four managers since the arrival of Italian businessman Francesco Becchetti in the summer, plus are now the subject of a reality TV show in Italy, while stories do the rounds about a £4 million increase in the club’s wage bill, dressing room bust ups, poor communication and various players wanting out.

We’re joined by Orient writer Andy Brown, who writes for the Guardian Series, View From The West Stand and wearegoingup.co.uk, plus Paul Levy, co-host of The Orient Outlook Podcast.

Episode 147 - Edinburgh off... Warburton next?

Last Saturday, after a week of speculation, Gillingham finally announced the identity of their new manager - Justin Edinburgh.

The ex Spurs defender, hotly tipped as one of the Football League's brightest young bosses, won 2-1 at Peterborough on Tuesday night in his first game in charge.

He has made the move to the Priestfield after a memorable three years as manager of Newport County, during which time he helped guide the Exiles back into the Football League after a 25 year absence.

Mark is joined by Matt Cole, sports reporter at BBC Radio Kent, for a Gills' perspective - plus by Michael Pearlman, sports reporter on the South Wales Argus, who discusses Edinburgh's legacy at Rodney Parade and Newport's play-off prospects in League Two.

Elsewhere, we hear from Brentford boss Mark Warburton, after the Bees' disappointing 2-1 loss to Watford in the Championship in midweek. DC (who was at Griffin Park) fills us in on speculation in The Times that Brentford owner Matthew Benham will sack Warburton, even if the club win promotion to the Premier League.

Episode 146 - Molineux in mourning

Wolves beat Blackpool 2-0 at Molineux last weekend to make it an impressive five wins from their last six Championship games. However, that run has been completely overshadowed by the sad news last week that their former chairman Sir Jack Hayward had passed away in Florida, aged 91. Hayward owned his boyhood club for seventeen years and pumped in £70 million of his own cash, which helped them finally clinch promotion to the Premier League back in 2003.

The boys discuss his life and legacy with David Evans, host of the award-winning 'Wolves Fancast', which was named 'Best Football Podcast' at the 2014 Football Blogging Awards. We also touch on the signing of Benik Akobe from Arsenal and their chances of promotion via the play-offs.

Elsewhere, it's all change once again at struggling Charlton Athletic. The Addicks were thrashed 5-0 at Watford on Saturday and still haven't won in the league since early November, a run which last week led to the sacking of Bob Peeters. Former Standard Liege boss Guy Luzon has taken his place, becoming the clubs' fourth manager in less than a year.

Neil Adams has resigned as Norwich City manager, following their 2-0 defeat at League One Preston in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. Adams was in charge at Carrow Road for nine months and he leaves the club seventh in the Championship, just three points off the play-off spots.
On Christmas Eve 1914, all went quiet on the Western Front. The screaming stopped. The rifles relented. The brutality and bloodshed were broken up. British and German troops laid down their weapons and walked out of their trenches. They shook hands, they exchanged gifts and they played football.

Just a year after they were promoted from League One thanks to an injury-time goal, Doncaster Rovers have been relegated back to the third tier by an injury time goal. It was scored by Paul Caddis for Birmingham City at the Reebok Stadium, which earned the Blues a 2-2 draw at Bolton and kept them in the Championship at Donny's expense on goal difference. Episode 127 - The great escape?

It all comes down to this. The final week of the season has arrived, with twelve Football League clubs still scrapping for their lives and hoping to avoid the dreaded drop. Four will go down, but the question is - which four? We analyse the state of play at the bottom of all three divisions with some special guests.

Birmingham City slipped into the Championship relegation zone following a 3-1 loss to Leeds at St Andrews on Saturday. The Blues now need at least a point from their remaining two games against Wigan and Bolton, or they will be playing in the third tier next season for the first time since 94/95. We discuss their disastrous home form and the string of problems facing Lee Clark with Daniel Ivery, author of Birmingham City blog 'Often Partisan' and a new book called 'Haircuts and League Cups: The Rise and Fall of Carson Yeung'.

In League One, Notts County have won six of their last eight games and now need just a point against Oldham at Boundary Park on Saturday to confirm their survival. We get the verdict on Shaun Derry and their incredible turnaround from Stuart Brothers, editor of Notts County's 'Black and White Fanzine'.

Bristol Rovers also need just a point to survive at the weekend. The Pirates go into their game against Mansfield in League Two off the back of a crucial 2-1 win at Adams Park against increasingly beleaguered Wycombe. Episode 123 - Stay up Pompey?

Following yet another tumultuous season in the life of Portsmouth Football Club, Saturday March 29th 2014 could prove to be a turning point. After sacking their manager Richie Barker during the week, Pompey registered a 2-1 victory against Newport County at Rodney Parade, their first win in seven games, which lifted them five points clear of the League Two relegation zone.

It was a first win this time around for new caretaker (and Portsmouth academy) boss Andy Awford, but the club are by no means safe yet - especially with relegation rivals Northampton to play in a few weeks time. The shortest month of the year must seem like the longest for Harry Redknapp. With no wins in February and just ten weeks of the season to go, QPR are faltering… badly. The R's lost 1-0 at Charlton on Saturday to slip down to fourth in the Championship, their lowest position this season. They are now seven points off second spot, effectively playing catch up to both Burnley and Derby in the race for automatic promotion.

Episode 117 - Sir Tom Finney tribute

RIP The Preston Plumber. This week the boys pay tribute to Sir Tom Finney, following his sad death at the age of 91. Finney was widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the Football League, where he spent his entire career, playing for just one club - his beloved Preston North End.

Finney also played 76 times for England, scoring 30 goals, featuring at the 1950, 1954 and 1958 World Cups. Ian Rigby, Preston's club historian, joins us to reflect on Sir Tom's incredible life and career - plus explain a bit more about what made him so deeply loved by football fans around the world. Ian is also the chairman of the Preston North End Former Players Association.

Bolton Wanderers suffered their worst league defeat since 1981-82 on Saturday, when they were thrashed 7-1 by Reading at the Madejski Stadium. It's fair to say the writing was on the wall for Steve Lomas. He was finally put out of his misery and sacked after Millwall were thrashed 4-0 at Watford on Boxing Day. He leaves the club just above the Championship relegation zone after just five league wins all season. We speak to Nick Hart, co-presenter of The Millwall Hangover Podcast, to find out where the Lions should turn next.

Five months ago at Vicarage Road, Manuel Almunia was the hero and Anthony Knockaert the villain. This weekend the roles were reversed as Leicester thrashed Watford 3-0 thanks to a Knockaert goal and an Almunia error.

Episode 95 - Lomas on thin ice

It's all going wrong for Steve Lomas and Millwall. A calamitous 5-1 mauling at The Den by Derby on Saturday leaves the Lions rock bottom of the Championship, with just two points and four goals from their first six games of the new season. There was also more off-the-field trouble at the weekend, with the FA set to launch an investigation into the crowd disturbances that saw the game briefly delayed in the second half. Mark, DC and Jim speak to Ted Robinson, Vice Chairman of the Millwall Supporters Club Committee, about a very difficult start to life under Lomas.

The boys also take a look at a bad start for David Weir at Sheffield United. The Blades lost 1-0 at struggling Carlisle on Saturday to slip into the League One relegation zone, following a run of just one win from their opening seven games. Sheffield United blogger Ian Rands from 'A United View on Football' is on the line with his reaction.

Episode 94 - Hartlepool horror show

It's been a desperate start to the season for Hartlepool United. Pools are yet to win any of their first six games back in League Two, plus have scored just ONE solitary goal in the process (that coming in their 2-1 defeat to Wycombe on Saturday). Northern Echo Sports Editor Nick Loughlin is on the line to discuss a torrid few weeks for Colin Cooper.

We also focus in depth on one of the division's new boys. Mansfield and Ashfield Chad sports reporter Stephen Thirkill joins us to tell us all about the start that Paul Cox's Mansfield Town have made to life back in the Football League.
