They're considered extremely rare and have origins in Japanese folklore where they serve as messengers for the god of the sea. They are also huge!!!! New fans brought to US figure skating by the recent Olympics and performances by Alysa Liu, Amber Glenn, Ilia Malinin, and the rest of the American team may not be aware of a gigantic and impactful piece of US figure skating history. In 1961, on its way to the world championships being held in Prague, Sabena flight 548 crashed at its stop in Belgium with the entire competitive team on board. This devastating tragedy sent ripples decades into the future of American figure skating, but we also wanted to highlight the enduring spirits of the athletes and families left behind and the beautiful lives of the skaters lost in this week's episode.
