Instead, he fell in love—with the country, with the culture, and with the woman who would become his wife. That leap of faith became a lifelong adventure, culminating in the creation of Costa Rica’s Call Center .

He explains why call centers aren’t just about dialing lists—they’re about rhetoric, persuasion, and the art of speech. For Richard, the real skill lies in listening, building rapport, and finding those rare “positive escalations” where a customer compliments an representative to their supervisor. He compares communication to fire: it can burn, but it can also light and warm, and the best representatives know how to use it for encouragement and clarity .

At just 27, Richard Blank took a leap that would shape the rest of his life — relocating to Costa Rica to train over 5,000 employees at one of San Jose’s largest call centers. That bold move sparked a journey filled with unexpected turns, cultural challenges, and remarkable growth.

Today, Richard is the CEO of Costa Rica’s Call Center (CCC), a company he founded in 2008. With a background in communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona — and a language proficiency certificate from the University of Sevilla — Richard combines motivational leadership with tactical communication strategies to empower his team. Over the years, he’s personally trained more than 10,000 bilingual telemarketers.

Originally from Philadelphia, Richard Blank studied Spanish at a young age. While in college, he lived abroad in Spain and immersed himself in the language.

Upon his return to the USA, he interned for Telemundo, and eventually made the bold step of relocating to Costa Rica at age 25 to help out a friend, working in a call center.

There, he met his wife, and built his own call center from the ground up. He now oversees a company with bi-lingual telemarketers doing inbound and outbound calls, in addition to being a CEO, he is a mentor and a trainer to the many people who are a part of his team.

Well, first and foremost, thank you so much for mentioning that. I have learned something being an owner of a company that you do have leverage. You can always hire, fire, make or break somebody. And so it should be humbling for the fact that somebody wants to come and add wind in your sails and you're only as good as the people that support you. And so for me, it's so important to make sure they have their dignity and that you show empathy. and that they're just not treated like a number or a robot, that these are investments and these individuals should be given delegation so they can grow within your company. So it's very important for me to see how high and how far these individuals can fly with me. So I'm always their biggest fan, always putting one in their sales. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Well, I have a story to tell. So I have, I'm an independent contractor. Um, And I get different contracts for different jobs. And I am learning that the, I don't even know what to call it. The people that are doing these 1099 jobs are getting lazy. And what I mean by getting lazy is the training. They don't even train me no more. What they're doing is sending you links to videos and you train yourself. I done had five contracts do that to me. You train yourself, they send you these videos, you look at these videos, you train yourself and then you go out on the floor. I don't agree with that. I feel like just because you're a contractor doesn't mean that you're gonna be able to go through and just do it. You still need that training. And I'm glad you don't do that, Mr. Blank.

Richard’s vision quest journey is filled with twists and turns. At 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. With a mix of motivational public speaking style backed by tactful and appropriate rhetoric, Richard shared his knowledge and trained over 10 000 bilingual telemarketers over two decades.

Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. 

Mr. Richard Blank holds a bachelors degree in Communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a certificate of language proficiency from the University of Sevilla, Spain. A Keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. In addition, inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame for Business. Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students that plan on majoring in a world language at the university level.

Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students that plan on majoring in a world language at the university level.

The Hero's Journey: Leaving the Castle and Slaying the Dragon

So tell me more about that. That's really good stuff there. I should be selling real estate in Scottsdale, getting yelled at by my older brother telling me to make more phone calls. But I think a lot of the excuses people are making is because they have a lot of pressure from their family or they've never left the island and they don't know what's out there or they're just comparing themselves to others that have never left the castle. And so you read about these fables. It's really a hero's journey. You're supposed to leave a castle, slay a dragon, and save a princess. How are you supposed to do it unless it's planned out for you? And so I'm not telling you to steal a car and drive cross-country. I was building on momentum from the second language, getting better at it, interning during college, certain jobs post-grad. So my goodness gracious, you see the trajectory. You see where it's going. This is... And you want to know something else? When somebody does wax on, wax off, dedicated practice above and beyond what work or school expects of you, reading the extra book, going, as you say, to the seminars, meeting the people, my God, is that a spark in somebody? You should never put that out if they're really practicing that violin and piano, no matter how it sounds, because they're living life, they're drinking it. And that could always lead to other things, too.

Understanding Gamification and Its Benefits

A lot of people incorporate that into their company culture. It's gaming through work, through play, through bonding. Now, I never thought that spending your free time doing company exercises was the correct thing. That's your own time. I was never really into going out having beers with the boss afterwards. I'm not a drinker, but I believe that during office hours, during break time or during certain sessions, this is a happy medium. It gives somebody a chance to let off steam, recharge batteries, try the machines that you and I grew up with that virtually today don't even compare to on the Internet. Elton John had it perfectly when he's talking about a pinball wizard, really filling this machine as you were mentioning earlier. Remember not to tilt the machine. People fall in love in my game room by the Pac-Man machine. I've had individuals really compose themselves before sparring out of control to quit or just to have a bad day. And for me, I have this space and one man's trash is another man's treasure.

And then a final book recommendation. How about this, my man, write your own book. Not saying it in a bad way, but I think that your life should be such an adventure and so amazing that you write your own book. And maybe if I'm going to recommend a book, maybe some of the children's books that I'll be writing when I retire. I think the third book should be your book. It should be proud. 

Leadership in Action: Financial Integrity and Leading the Charge

I absolutely agree. Now, one thing that I am absolutely convinced, and this podcast is about leadership, because I believe that everything rises and falls on leadership. And for you to have been able to build such a great company away from home and creating that bond and culture in your organization, that takes a great deal of very positive leadership. What's your definition of leadership? Paying somebody on time. You earn that money, it's yours. That's number one. So at least that's their livelihood. That's their security and stability. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors. I just want to make sure I fulfill my end financially to somebody. All right. And secondly, I'd like to set an example. This is my wheelhouse. It's not like I just cut checks and I'm an administrator. I can get on these phone calls and match or exceed the work that's being done. And I can do it on a moment's notice.

And the culture here, it's a very united culture. It's a very proud culture. We mentioned Pura Vida, which means pure life. They're really into nature. So, I mean, with all the national parks that you visited and the monkeys that are hanging around, the sloths and iguanas and butterflies, it's like being in a painting. It really is. Maybe when you decompress, my friend, and you put the phone away and you sit under that palm tree next to a waterfall out in the rainforest and no one's around you, maybe that's the sort of thing that can recharge your batteries and get you in a healthier state of mind. The shame that I see is when people bring that mental baggage with them and hoping that that will erase it when they come here. But no, they need to separate the two. Or when people are here, they go maybe a little above and beyond in regards to adventure.

Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose. 

Mr. Richard Blank holds a bachelors degree in Communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a certificate of language proficiency from the University of Sevilla, Spain. A Keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. In addition, inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame for Business.

The Importance of Diligence and Endurance in Business

And at the end of the day, Daniel, when you're talking about leverage, you got to choose between 10 companies. I'm not into the Philippines, might be a little more expensive. Look at the way I treated your assistant. I called you back on time, followed through on that email. How about this? I did so much due diligence on you from your LinkedIn profile on your website that I custom made your voicemail and email. He loved me. It was almost mine to lose. And so I'm earning these things by getting a lot of first downs and moving it forward through momentum. I'm not angling my way in there or pretending to be. And so if you have that sort of pace and rhythm, your supervisor needs to calm down. He should remember when he was on the phone and what it's like to do this sort of forced march. Now also, my friend, you need to build up that endurance for it. You're talking about manual dialing. We have machines now that do that for you. But the old school players off of those Cisco phones, remember how to do those dials?
