He is also a commercially rated, multi-engine jet, seaplane, and helicopter pilot, a certified submersible test pilot, and recently flew into space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, becoming the first person in history to climb Mount Everest, dive to the bottom of the ocean, and visit space.

Victor received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, a Master’s Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received an MBA from Harvard Business School where he graduated as a Baker Scholar. Additionally, Victor served 20 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence and targeting officer, retiring in 2013 as a Commander.

George is the director and subject of The Book of George, a critically acclaimed short documentary that has screened at major international festivals, including Telluride Mountain film, Banff, and Jackson Wild, where it won Best Short Form Film in the People & Nature category. The film anchors an ongoing impact campaign focused on youth mentorship, conservation education, and representation in the outdoors.

His photography and film making document the unseen connections between wildlife, working lands, and the people who steward them. From camera-trapping Florida panthers and photographing endangered plants on the Lake Wales Ridge to telling stories across the Florida Wildlife Corridor and the Okefenokee Swamp, George’s work emphasizes private lands, cultural history, and the human role in conservation outcomes.

Beyond storytelling, George is deeply engaged in applied conservation. He collaborates with land trusts, state and federal agencies, scientists, and private landowners on projects related to habitat restoration, invasive species management, prescribed fire, and climate resilience. His work often translates complex land-management science into compelling visual narratives that build public understanding and support.

A committed mentor and educator, George works extensively with young people—particularly youth of color—through workshops, school programs, and outdoor experiences that use photography and storytelling as tools for confidence, curiosity, and connection to nature. His approach is grounded in the belief that conservation succeeds when people feel included, capable, and invested.

In 2015, Rigby embarked on his epic “Crossing Africa” expedition, traveling from Cape Town, South Africa to Cairo, Egypt entirely by foot and kayak. Over two years, he covered more than 12,000 kilometers across 8 African countries.  Along the way, he learns of its people, languages and customs coming away with a deep understanding of the reach cultural diversity of continent.  He then went on to kayak the length of Lake Ontario, bicycle from coast to coast across Canada.  Mario recently returned from a month long stay in Algeria’s Sahara Desert with the nomadic Tuareg.  His next adventure, Expedition Impossible will be to circumnavigate the planet solely through human powered transport and to climb the 7 summits along the way.

Rigby is an explorer, athlete, and advocate for sustainable adventure. His mission is to inspire the world to explore responsibly while pushing human potential to new limits.  He has been awarded Explorer in Residence by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.

Driving across the African continent in an old Land Rover.  Safari guide in the remote Zambezi valley.  Join us for part two as we hear more tales of classic African adventure from Rob Fynn.

Rob Fynn's family goes back in Africa six generations.  He was brought up in Rhodesia and then at age 18 he left to join the Royal Navy. He was asked to leave when UDI was declared and all Rhodesians in the British armed forces were now regarded as potential rebels.

After pursuing his engineering degree at Bristol University, he returned home driving across the African continent in a Land Rover, which led him into starting up a safari operation in the remote Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe.

Rob Fynn is a professional guide and author.  His book, Angels in a Thorn Bush is good reading.  Available at Amazon and good book stores.

In this episode of Whiskey and a Map, award winning journalist and author Jacques Leslie recounts his years as a war correspondent covering the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia and the Indira Gandhi crises in India.

 At the age of 24, Jacques Leslie became a Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent, and covered the war in Vietnam and Cambodia for two years. For that work he won the Sigma Delta Chi Distinguished Service Award for foreign correspondence and an Overseas Press Club citation. He began writing about environmental issues two decades ago, and won numerous awards including the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award for the “elegant, beautiful prose” of his 2005 book on dams, Deep Water: The Epic Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment. Now a Los Angeles Times contributing opinion writer, he is working on a book about the Klamath River basin on the California-Oregon border.

His latest expedition takes him across the most dangerous jungle in the world- The Darien Gap of Central America- where he traveled with human smugglers and migrants to document their journey as they suffered the dangers of the jungle and the criminal gangs praying upon them.

Facing down grizzly bears, charging mountain gorillas and a solo cross country ski crossing of Yellowstone in winter, are just some of the adventures award winning wildlife photographer Tom Murphy shares with us in this episode of Whiskey and a Map.

Tom uses his photography to illustrate his passion for the remaining wild places on our earth. Yellowstone National Park’s wildlife and landscapes are the special focus of Tom’s work. A talented naturalist and gifted lecturer, Tom has traveled the United States presenting the wonders of nature captured in his photographic slide shows.

Tom Murphy is featured in a PBS Nature film, “Christmas in Yellowstone” which is shown every Christmas worldwide. His photography is in private, public, and museum collections around the world. He has produced seven books including the Seasons of Yellowstone, a four volume set.

Tom serves on the board of the Yellowstone Park Foundation and the Park County Environmental Council.

Tom donates his work to conservation organizations to help in preserving wildlife and wild land. Much of the photography in the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center in Yellowstone Park was donated by Tom for educational use by the National Park Service.

In this episode, Katie Aune takes on a adventure far off the typical tourist track, from riding the Trans-Siberian Railway across Russia and taking a cargo ferry from Ukraine to Georgia, to volunteering in Tajikistan and camping in the desert of Turkmenistan.

 Katie is a recovering tax attorney who has worked in nonprofit and higher ed fundraising for more than a decade while also dabbling in travel blogging and writing. Born and raised in Minnesota, Katie is currently based in Washington, D.C. Despite not traveling overseas for the first time until she was 25, she has been to 70 countries and all seven continents. She is the author of Finding Katya: How I Quit Everything to Backpack the Former Soviet States, a travel memoir that chronicles her 13-month adventure through the former Soviet Union.

Described by some as a never ending green hell and by others as the most beautiful bio diverse place on the planet, the jungles of Panama attract the best and the worst of mankind.  In this episode, conservation photographer Joshua Asel recounts his adventure into the jungles of Panama’s Darian gap to embed with the indigenous tribal rangers and support their efforts to counter large scale poaching of wildlife and timber on their lands.  

Joshua is an award-winning wildlife conservation photographer and certified Marine Ecology Naturalist, with a photographic emphasis on coastal and marine habitats, birds of prey, and threatened/endangered species and national parks. He is an Emerging Member of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a Board Member of the Bird Rescue Center of Sonoma County, the Global Editor and Manager of the Global Parks Network at Global Conservation, a member of the Ethics Committee for the North American Nature Photography Association, and is sponsored by Think Tank Photo.
 
 While in Panama, Joshua became an Honorary Tribe Member of the Naso Indigenous People for his work helping them document their culture and patrolling with their rangers. His current main project revolves around critically endangered California condor conservation, with focused efforts to establish a new home base in Sonoma County for the Condor Recovery Program. He's also appeared on multiple judging panels, advised on mountain lion safety for land trusts, and acted as a consultant and principal photographer to help establish a new redwood forest preserve in Healdsburg, California.

Jill Heinerth is a cave diver, photographer, writer and filmmaker. Jill has explored unmapped, underwater caves deep in the earth, as well as the submerged crevices of the world’s largest iceberg. She has seen hidden creatures and life forms that have never been before.  More people have been on the moon than to places where Jill has explored. 

Jill has made TV programs for the CBC, BBC, National Geographic, consulted on movies for directors including James Cameron and produced independent films. Over 2.5 million people have learned about climate change, water advocacy, and exploration by viewing Jill’s TED Talks.

Luke Smithwick shares stories of his travels and adventures in the Himalayan mountains.  The dangers of climbing remote and unclimbed peaks, witness to ancient mask dances and blood sacrifice, and an encounter with the rare snow leopard.

Luke Smithwick is an American professional skier, alpinist and mountain guide in the Himalaya with 98 Himalayan expeditions in the past 13 years. He is focused on the unclimbed and unskied in the Himalaya and hasn't repeated an expedition since he started climbing and skiing full time there in 2010. Formerly he worked as an environmental biologist and archaeologist in Alaska so his approach on expeditions isn't just about climbing summits and first ski descents, focusing on the cultures and natural history in each specific expedition. He lives at home in Teton valley, Idaho with his dog Wolfie when he isn't on expedition. Having done eight to nine Himalayan expeditions every year since 2010, that is not very often.

 George Kourounis is an explorer, storm chaser & TV presenter who has spent 25 years documenting extreme forces of nature and natural phenomena worldwide including tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, floods, and the effects of climate change.

He holds the title of National Geographic Explorer, Explorer In Residence for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and served the maximum term as the Canadian Chapter Chair of the Explorers Club.

Best known for having hosted the TV series “Angry Planet” he also co-hosted “Storm Hunters” for The Weather Network and is a regular on-camera contributor for “Strange Evidence” & “What On Earth?” on Science Channel. He’s appeared in programs for National Geographic, Discovery, Smithsonian Channel, Netflix, most of the major TV networks, and is frequently invited to comment about global weather & natural disasters by CNN, BBC, CBC, and other news outlets.

George earned a Guinness World Record for being the first person to ever set foot at the bottom of the Darvaza “Doorway To Hell” flaming gas crater in remote Turkmenistan, the project was funded by a National Geographic science grant and was also filmed for Nat Geo television.

He has documented changes to melting permafrost in Siberia, sea level rise in Tuvalu, shifting tornado & hurricane patterns in North America, wildfires in Australia, and melting polar ice.

In 2014 he was awarded the Stefansson Medal from the Explorers Club Canadian Chapter "For outstanding contribution to science and to public education by documenting extreme environments through filmmaking.” In 2020 was awarded the Leif Erikson Exploration Award from the Exploration Museum in Iceland.

After finishing his hitch with the Israeli navy, Yossi traveled to South America in search of his dream of finding the El Dorado and of befriending a lost Amazonian tribe.  He and three others set off into the uncharted jungle in the Madidi region of the Amazon.  The hardships of the jungle caused two of his fellow adventurers to split of and attempt to return to civilization.  They were never seen again.  A rafting accident on the Tuichi River left Yossi alone in this inhospitable place.  Attacked by insects (Yossi had to cut burrowing worms out of his forehead), stalked by jaguar, hungry and alone, Yossi fought to survive.  This epic story of adventure and survival is the basis of his best-selling book Lost in the Jungle and the movie Jungle.

This ordeal transformed him.  He learned that “The gift of life is not to be taken for granted.  Nothing is mundane, it is all a miracle.”  A philosophy expressed in his late friend Vesty Pakos’ war cry “Where is it? Where is it?  It is here! It is here!”  Yossi continues today traveling the world in his unique style seeking out tribal cultures-befriending the Bedouin, traveling through the Sahara, and living among the islanders on Carteret Island in Papua New Guinea.

Leif Whittaker, son of Jim Whittaker who was the first American to summit Mt. Everest, grew up on a sail boat with his family sailing the Pacific.  Initially not interested in climbing, that all changed at age 15 when he and his older brother hiked 20 miles into the wilderness without their parents and climbed Mt. Olympus. Since then, he has traveled across the globe and climbed some of the world’s highest peaks, including Aconcagua, Mt. Vinson, Denali, and two ascents of Mt. Everest.

Leif worked for more than a decade as a Climbing Ranger for the U. S. Forest Service on Mt. Baker protecting it’s wilderness and engaging in emergency rescues. He is also a founding member and top coach for Evoke Endurance where he specializes in coaching mountaineers.   

His book, My Old Man and the Mountain, was published by Mountaineers Books in 2016 and won several awards.  One of the best true adventure books of 2016.

Jennifer Thompson ranks as one of the most inspiring of the next generation of explorers.  She is a Honorary Research Fellow, expedition scientist, scuba diver and illustrator; whom aspires to connect the space and marine sectors using scientific scuba diving and extreme exploration. Jennifer’s passion for scientific diving has taken her from the Bahamas to Thailand, from Mozambique, to the Maldives. However, her greatest scientific adventure to date, was spending 8 months immersed in the OceanX Red Sea Decade Expedition 2022, in conjunction with KAUST, National Geographic, and other institutions. 

Jennfer’s academic achievements include a Zoology degree (with first class honours) from the University of Manchester and a MSc in Marine Ecosystems Management from the University of St Andrews.  In addition, she achieved a Divemaster certification for PADI.

Steve Elkins is an award winning cinematographer and explorer. He is a fellow of the Explorer's Club and member of the Adventurer's Club.

Matthew Marriott is a British explorer, researcher and geographer.

He is a fellow of the Royal Geographic society and a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.

His expeditions include walking across the Queensland, Australia tropical rain forest area, documenting the Cassowary and learning about the Djiru Aboriginal people and language.  He traversed a transect of the Sahara from Eastern Morocco to the Algerian border on camel.  Marriott retraced his great great grandfather's Challenger expedition to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.

Whiskey and a Map podcast opens it's 4th season with Brent Bishop: A mountaineer and explorer, Brent has climbed the highest peaks around the world. In the process, he has encountered Chechen mafia, murderous Papuans and killing avalanches. 

In this episode we get to sit down with world class climber Brent Bishop who shares these experiences and more.

 Brent Bishop, the son of the late legendary climber Barry Bishop, began climbing as a child with his father on the east coast and in the Rocky Mountains. When he was young, his parents moved to and worked in Nepal.  Living among the Sherpa people, Brent developed close ties and personal friendships with many of them that continue today.

 In 1994 he became the first American legacy to follow in his father’s footsteps and summit Mt. Everest.  He reached the summit again in 2002 with the National Geographic Mt. Everest Expedition that marked the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest.

An accomplished climber and explorer in his own right, Brent has climbed and guided expeditions throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia and the Antarctic.  Brent has accomplished difficult first ascents and pioneered new routes up established peaks.

His climbing and environmental work earned him awards from the prestigious Explorer’s Club and the American Alpine Club.

Brent has a deep love of climbing and of the people and their cultures who live in these remote areas.

Jon is a scientist, author, and National Geographic award-winning explorer whose worldview was altered by extended visits with Moolynaut, a Siberian shaman.

He earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry and was nominated by National Geographic as one of the Top Ten Adventurers of the Year in 2012.  Jon co-authored the first college-level environmental science textbook in North America, followed by 35 additional texts, and five books about his adventures.

Jon has kayaked around Cape Horn, across the North Pacific from Japan to Alaska, and circumnavigated Ellesmere Island.  He is also credited with numerous first ski descents and first rock climbing ascents around the globe.

Tim Cahill is a writer.  He is an explorer.  He is very good at both.  His adventures have taken him in search of pre-Inca fortresses, going deep underground mapping a newly discovered cave and to the Sahara in search of the legendary salt mines of Mali.  Just to name a few.

Tim began his writing career with Rolling Stone magazine.   A love of the outdoors and adventure led him to co-founding Outside Magazine.  He's the author of nine book including Jaguars Ripped My Flesh  named by National Geographic as one of the 100 best adventure/ travel books ever written.

Dr Adrian McCallum is a remote area field scientist and engineer.

Adrian holds a PhD from the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge and additional degrees in oceanography, meteorology and civil engineering. 

During twenty years of service with the Australian Defense Forces, he served in numerous diverse roles such as helicopter navigator, meteorologist and civil engineer. During his service, Adrian received extensive training in surviving arctic conditions, mountaineering and expedition leadership.

Meghan Buchanan.  Her quest to become the first American woman to complete the Adventurer's Grand Slam:  Climbing the 7 summits and skiing to the North and South Poles.

Meghan faced adversity from an early age, when her family learned she was dyslexic at age 7.  Determined to overcome this learning disability, she pursued a career in aerospace engineering where she has worked on spacecraft designs.   In 2011, Meghan suffered a life-threatening snowboarding accident, severely breaking her femur. Told she was lucky to be alive, and that she’d have to use a cane for the rest of her life, Meghan once again persevered and set a goal to take on the world’s highest Summits and both poles.

Meghan has since summited Mount Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Elbrus, Denali, Mt. Vinson , and completed the South Pole Last Degree Ski, all on her first attempts. 

Her quest continues, this Spring 2022, returning to complete MT. EVEREST.  

She is dedicated to becoming the 1st Rocket Scientist to climb the 7 Summits, as well as the 1st US woman to complete the Adventurers’ Grand Slam.

Alex Chionetti is a renowned South American explorer, film-maker and writer.  He was awarded the Explorer's Medal from the Andean Explorer Foundation for his explorations in the Andes and Amazon jungles.  Alex is best known for his expeditions to the cave of the Tayos.

In this interview, Alex shares experiences from his expeditions and the fellow explorers he's befriended along the way.  Finding lost Inca cities with underground crypts holding human skeletons with elongated skull, filming man made structures deep inside caves, to escaping kidnapping and surviving attacks of spears and poisoned darts.  Then there is his initiation in the Cuevas Las Brujas (cave of the witches).  Alex has spent his life trying to uncover man's lost history.

Jim Davidson is a high altitude climber who has spent a life-time climbing peaks around the world.

Raised in Massachusetts, he worked in the family business as an industrial painter of high-voltage electrical towers. Early on, the mountains called him.

He moved to Colorado to attend college and to climb its big mountains. 

Jim earned a bachelors and Master’s degrees in environmental engineering and has worked cleaning up oil and gasoline spills.

His climbing career has taken him to Alaska, Argentina, Bolivia and Tibet. He received commendations twice by the U.S. National Park Service for assisting on remote mountain rescues.

 Jim was on Mount Everest during the tragic earthquake in 2015, then returned in 2017 to reach the summit. 

He is an award-winning author and he has appeared on National Geographic, Smithsonian Channel and Discovery.

In this interview, Wayne recounts his experiences exploring New Guinea, dying in the Amazon and the challenges of working in the South Pole.

Wayne White is a throw back to the golden age of exploration.  Reminiscent of Sir Richard Burton, his solo expeditions using only local support include travels through the jungles and swamps of New Guinea, the Amazon and Africa.  His latest adventure was as the Winter Manager of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station.  

Wayne is US Marine veteran and holds a BA in geography and an MPH in environmental health science from Tulane’s school of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.  He has worked in remote assignments all over the globe as a Defense Department contractor.

Peter Rowe is an award-winning adventure film maker and member of the Explorer’s club.  He is best known for hit TV series “Angry Planet” which he filmed in thirty different countries on all seven continents.  He has produced documentaries on locations in over forty countries.  In this interview, Peter shares some of his exploits traveling the world filming in exotic and wild lands.

Peter has paid a dear price in this pursuit.  While on expedition filming at the rim of an active and poisonous volcano, his vocal cords were damaged leaving him with a strained and husky voice.  His voice may be challenged, but his words and experiences are a pleasure to hear.

Robert C. Robinson recounts his search for the truth behind the Bigfoot legends in the swamps of Florida and other wild places.  

He is a U.S. military veteran having served with the famous 82nd Airborne for 21 years as a military police officer.  Drawing on his military and police skills, Robert researches the historical roots of the legend from Native American traditions and early pioneer encounters to investigating modern eyewitness accounts.  

Police detective turned crypto investigator, Robert's investigations and research are compelling.  Leading expeditions into swamps filled with alligators, panthers, large snakes and perhaps as yet unknown creatures, he is searching for the truth behind the legends. You will come away from this interview with a new appreciation of the legend of Bigfoot and an understanding that science may not have solved all the mysteries still out there in the wild places.

Janey McGill is an explorer, writer and photographer. She is part of the newest generation of explorers leading physically, culturally and socially challenging expeditions around the globe.  Janey is a military veteran serving 4 years as a soldier with the Honourable Artillery Company. 

In this interview, Janey recounts her expedition across Arabia’s infamous desert, the Rub’ al Khali, known in the west as the Empty Quarter.  A vast desert wilderness of which much remains unexplored.  A land of searing heat and frigid nights, and home to a friendly and generous people.  Along the way she encounters the mysterious Jinn.  Spirits that have been part of the Arab culture for thousands of years.  She also discusses the challenges of expedition leadership and the hard lessons she is learning along the way.

In this podcast episode, Amos Rodriguez recounts his youth growing up in the violence of El Salvador’s civil war, his travels throughout Central and North America learning primitive survival skills and the spiritual practices of the Native Americans, and his search for meaning.

Amos Rodriguez grew up in El Salvador during its civil war.  As a young child he saw family and friends become victims of torture and death squads.  At wars end, Amos traveled throughout Central America where he experienced the cultures of the Maya and other indigenous peoples.  His natural curiosity about other people and their cultures grew.  Making his way to the United States and attending college there, he was introduced to primitive survival skills.  Making many trips into the wilderness, he honed these skills and developed deeper connections to nature, himself and his spirit.  He met and befriended the Oglala Lakota of South Dakota who taught him the practice of the vision quest.  This spiritual journey led him to the Lakota Sundance Ceremony.  A grueling 4-day ceremonial dance performed without food or water and culminating with a flesh offering to the spirits.  This journey healed the early wounds and has given Amos clarity of his purpose in this life.

Chuck Jonkey is an adventurer/composer/musician/filmmaker who transforms his wild experiences into sound, music and film. Chuck's exotic adventures have taken him to the furthest reaches of primitive worlds. Referred to as an "ethnomusicianthropologist" Chuck travels around the world in search of adventure among the world’s most isolated tribal groups. He has explored the deep Amazon and the rain forests of Thailand, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, and Mexico. Chuck’s travels have also taken him to West Africa, Borneo, French Polynesia, Morocco, Venezuela, Russia, China, India and many other countries. 

Chuck owns Sonic Safari Music. He has produced and published over 110 CDs of exotic music. Chuck has also produced several TV shows and documentaries. 

He is a member of the Los Angeles Adventurers’ Club.
